Bits..... of Me

Prologue:
There are times when I sit and think. I know that sounds odd, but I do it a great deal of the time. The fact is, I rarely turn my brain off. When you do this (constant thinking), a great many things pop into your mind that you think you need to cover, get off your chest or just vocalize.

This is one of those things....

You see the issue with being a single parent is that I am not there for my kids when I need to be. There are lessons in life that I don't get to share, examples that are missed. This bothers me a great deal.

So, I decided I would do all I can do. I would write them down and hope that when my kids need them, perhaps they would take a look, find whatever tidbit of wisdom is there and remember that their dad loves them.

My problem isn't unique, there are millions of single parents out there. All of us... more »

QUESTION

So... 
Whats everyone doing out there...? I've been absent again... writing and am about ready to start sharing again.

I am going to start a new feature entitled "Bits of me" something to frame my stories, insights and longer posts.

I am curious.... and wanted to ask my friends, followers and casual drop ins.

I am thinking about creating  a new profile to feature ONLY my stories. When I originally created my G+ account it was intended to be only about my photography. That has changed. Now, I am wondering if its best to start anew or to persist here under my original account.

Thoughts....?

The PERFECT Moment
My son turns 18 on Thursday. He was hoping to take his driving test on his actual birthday. For whatever reason, the state of California requires that not only do you have insurance, but the car you test in, is registered in California.

In a panic realizing this just 1.5 weeks before his birthday I set about doing all of the paper work to register my car that he has been driving and practicing in. (Yes, I am still driving around in Texas plates).

Today I got the paper work back from the state of Texas.....

only to find out that while I provided a scan of both my California and previous Texas license, the California state name was not in the scan and Texas wouldn't send me the title to my car as a result.

So this is how it happened...... and how the discussion went.

The First Meeting
The most prominent and recognizable feature of Thanks-Giving Square is the Chapel of Thanksgiving, a small, spiral tower that features an enclave for prayerful thanks. The entrance to the chapel is at the end of a 125-foot (38 m) bridge that runs over a cascading waterfall. Inside the chapel, the spiral is topped with stained glass "Glory Window", one of largest horizontally mounted stained-glass pieces in the world. The window was designed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France to feature brighter colors as the spiral reached its apex, becoming brighter as it reaches the center. The window appears in a shot in director Terrence Malick's 2011 film The Tree of Life. 

This shot was taken while laying on the floor. No tripod, in what was an overcast and windy day in Dallas, Texas. The image is a little soft but still remains an unshared favorite.

Because I Promised
I have made a life of trying very hard to be a man of my word. Unfortunately, circumstances at times are indeed beyond my control and things don't always go as planned or intended.

This is one of those shots.

I promised I would share a few, yet they were taken last year in September at the Getty Fine Art Museum and until tonight I have barely looked at them. 

Someone thought I needed to shoot more flowers. I was more interested in portraits on this particular day.... the flowers won.

Regardless, this was the one shot of flowers I decided was worthy of sharing. It's late, I know.... but at least I delivered.

I think I need to shoot more flowers. I've always enjoyed shooting them. Though I doubt I will enjoy it as much as I did on this particular day.

Delphi XE4 and C++ Builder XE4
Since I have no life, I think I will engage in a coding exercise. Multi-device, true native app development for iOS, Windows, and Mac all from one code base. Thats right folks.... one set of instructions and I can run the same app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows machine (in 64 bit)....  well thats what the marketing stuff says.

I can't wait to try it..... installing now. XE4 Architect

It is said that those who cant do teach or manage. While I dont agree with this statement since I have been coding for 33 years (Ok I started and sold my first software as a teen in the back of Popular Science) it has been a long time since I did the design and development.

What kind of LOSER do you have to be to purchase Circles on Google+...?

Yes, its true that circles will probably be counted in terms of one's authority ranking for the semantic web (SEO is changing, people), but so what? This is no different than buying backlinks, and other frauds for ranking. 

I hope Google comes up with a way to blast these offenders right off the index. +Matt Cutts what say you, dude?

Limelight - Take II

Prologue:
For sometime now, I have been quiet. I haven't written as much, but I have been reading plenty. Recently I had noticed a significant up-tic in the Mob mentality on G+ and how people can use their position or influence to incite a digital riot, or some significant bashing of people for expressing a difference of opinion.

So much for the "Social" in social media.

The thing that really staggers my imagination is that I am watching adults do this.... to one another, over the very fundamental premise of a social media platform... sharing opinions and thoughts.

While reviewing other posts, I realized that I addressed my approach to this once already in a post released over a year ago (funny to see not much has changed) and thought I would re-post it.

With a single click the light came on and the garage door began to open. This was the signal that marked then ending of another long day at work. Sliding the car into park and collecting my things, I open the door to my home.

I remember a time when this event would mean I was greeted by my daughter running across the house screaming "Daddy" the dogs would bark and wag their tails and my boys would yell "Hey Pop" from across the house or from their rooms. It always made me smile if even for a second to be welcomed home.

This small daily ritual made me feel a little bit better about the time I spend away at work and the focus I give my job to take care of my family.

That was then.....

With a single click the light comes on in the garage and the door slowly creeks open. My day is again over and its time to enjoy being... more »

4 Days ago
I posted I was basically done on G+
I haven't done much in quite some time and its been very hard to write.

I think I was letting life get the best of me and what I need to do is not try so hard to maintain the pace I had when I started, but maintain my outlet.

I let some personal stuff cloud my normally objective nature and decision process (always a bad idea) but it happens to the best of us.

So....

No... I wont be writing every week. I honestly cant do that or maintain that pace.

The rest.... who knows. All I know for sure is that I worked WAY to hard to build my presence here, and it seems a shame to let some personal stuff and a generally BLAH attitude on my part let me ruin something that has otherwise been good.

New Graphics and my .02
I dunno what made the team at Google choose to add MORE Scrolling to our profile pages by increasing the size of the banner, but I don't care for it much. 

This graphic while making for a nice intro to the page breaks several conventions of information architecture.

It decreases the visibility and accessibility of content. I personally would have opted for options around data displayed in the banner as opposed to this huge thing. At least optional sizes would have been good. After all the right gutter isnt used for much, why not have our name and stats there where they always have been..?

Why when there are SO MANY OTHER THINGS that need to be done that this would get priority...???

Today marked the first step in paying for college. Something that starts in five months for my son. He arrives even earlier if he makes the marching band (Fingers Crossed!). Either way, its been years in the making and now its finally here.

Blocking InDUHviduals permanently on Google+
Recently, on a thread from someone I literally NEVER WANT TO HEAR FROM AGAIN, a simple question was asked.

"How do I permanently block someone on Google+..?"

Interestingly, I had the same problem. I had ignored someone, uncircled them etc and yet I STILL GOT their notifications in my stream.

(this was one of those where the signal to noise ration was way off) so I fixed it, did two min of research and came up with the answer and thought I would share in case any of you have the same problem (or want to  perma-block me):

Ignoring someone on Google+
When you ignore people, their posts and anything they've shared in your "Incoming" stream will be removed. In addition, you will no longer be notified when they mention you.

My Next Camera
So... I have wanted, longed for and waited to get a D800. I noticed today that they had come down a little and thought long and hard about going ahead and buying one.

Knowing that Nikon will make a new release in or about October, I finally decided I would raise the bar.

I wont get a D800. Despite all of the excellent things I have read and the recommendations. I will wait and shoot with my workhorse D700 until October and replace it with a Nikon D4x or D5 (whatever they call it).

Why you ask...?

Well, up to this point I have always shot the PRO-lite version of the Nikon line. Meaning I have owned a D100, 200, 300 and 700. They are more economical and have 90% of the features found in the High end single digit Nikons, so it just made sense.

But yesterday I did something I haven't done in awhile.

 An amazing number of circles have been shared and tracked by +CircleCount and some interesting stats can be found in the attached post. Some people where in more than a 1000 shared circles which is amazing, but what is the real effect on G+?

Circle sharing can go two ways: it can be an excellent tool to group like-minded people (or more precisely people with shared interests) and it can be an 'incestuous´ process where a small group of people ´share´ the goods circles to get more followers. 

Incestuous as it has a very strong ´you´re in or out´ character not unlike your school playground. Some have it, some don´t and rising in the ranks  is hard. Wednesday morning my coworker peaked her head into my office and said:

Blushing, I sheepishly nodded yes.

Welcome To The Masquerade

Prologue: This last weeks theme for project +Project 52 B&W was Isolation. The topic spawned conversation on a few threads of which I decided to chime in with the following below.

... Yet some rely on the ether or electronic means to make a connection or sustain that which cant be sustained in person.

A fallacy or exercise in futility perpetuated by electronic means.

The anonymity provided by the very cloud or ether we dwell in is all to often common in this day and age. While technology improves, relationships and interpersonal skills become weaker.

In addition to being isolated, often by choice (a form of misanthropy) masks get applied such that the face that is portrayed in the ether isn't one of reality, but that view that people wish to be seen by or as rather than a true reflection of reality.

My former stomping ground. I took this shot from the roof of the Hilton on Congress Ave.

Turns out I spent a bunch of time taking pictures from roofs in Austin and I am scared to death of heights.

I guess HDR is just kinda in the Austin blood wouldnt ya say +Trey Ratcliff.

Hey for those interested, a very good friend +Gino Barasa shoots HDR and more in Austin. Take a look at his work. He is probably one of the best shooters in Austin and a REAL NICE guy.

I have only slept about 16 hours this entire week.... as a result I have not had a chance to go shoot anything for this weeks theme. So, I am offering this shot from 2009. Taken in Tacoma, WA at the Glass Museum. (www.http://museumofglass.org/) this is their elevator lobby that takes you down to the main entrance of the museum.

Numbers
Numbers mean so many things to us in life. The date, weight and size when we were born. The age when we first walked, kissed and had our first child. The money we make, the time of the big game. In the end, all are just numbers.

Numbers also tie back as units of measure. Metrics of performance, status and achievement.

Some numbers are small, some numbers are huge and some are un-calculable even by machines.

This number:  *3.714285714285714* 

Happens to be the GPA of a kid who was forced to leave his friends, move to a new state, start a new school and try not to ruin what has been a very successful High School career.

The big guy didn't disappoint.

Nothing Else Matters
It's hard at times to keep an eye on everything. Sometimes, we take things for granted, sometimes we lose sight of whats important. Then, one day something happens that puts everything into perspective.

A change in life, a circumstance, an event. Something ever so subtly (and at times abruptly) always seems to make the scales balance again and allows us to see things in the right light once again.

A time to recompose, re-set our priorities and focus on what is important.

I saw him sitting there, on a corner in front of the store window. Life was happening all around him, yet nobody paid him any mind. He was just a person, among people. Caught in the hustle and bustle of life. Nothing to distinguish himself among the rest, just a patron enjoying the sun or a lost soul looking for a connection that was nowhere to be found.

I took another look, deeper this time. The kind that has the purpose of understanding, the kind where casual slips by and curiosity takes hold. Well... as many know, I killed off my web site: Faces, Places and Things.

Why...?

Well, I created it to push my "professional" photography business. The thing is, I didn't have time to work in a professional capacity. I am a geek... and very involved at a VERY cool company #riotgames . So, I didnt have time when I got here to go shoot.

So... I killed it. 4 years was enough.

For quite sometime here on Google+ I have gone by "Images and Words" as it related to more of what I wanted to share and resembled more closely my true online identity.

So... yesterday I killed my old twitter account of facesplaces and now have a new one.

Being a REALIST
I always find it interesting to see how what I write is received, what is commented on and what just passes on by. It's always very interesting to see what gets a comment (if any) and then what responses are received (if any) as well as what is shared.

The Googleverse is a fickle audience...

For a long time, it was inner personal stuff, more journalistic in style than anything that was noted, shared and appreciated. Then it was stories, about encounters and experiences. 

All heart felt, all true and all very emotional.

Life isn't always a story, full of rich metaphor, meaning or happy endings. Sometimes life just hurts, is disappointing or unfulfilling... and that's the story. Finding the time....
I have shot this year as well as last. I have several photos that I haven't shared. Not because they are bad but because I haven't made my passion a priority.

I have gotten lost in the work, the time, the holidays and slipped into the realm of simple existence.

I haven't used my office much if at all though it took a month to set up. I haven't re-programmed my external editing keyboards, written an equipment review or anything that really ties back to my photography.

Tonight, I decided to sit down and actually try and get something done.

There was a time
When a few people put me in a category of writers here on G+ that were open and expressive. I apparently struck a chord with my stories because of my transparent nature and style. The recognition and following was both flattering and humbling at the same time.To all of those that still follow and read, I sincerely appreciate it, in fact more than most of you will ever truly know.

Well....

I'm trying to get going again. The end of 2012 was rough on me. Too many significant changes that caused me to change gears and focus for awhile. While I wrote 42 long stories (almost 1 per week) I fell flat that last four months of the year and had virtually disappeared. So far, this year I have written three stories or long posts and #4 is on its way, Monday, January 21.

There is some AMAZING work that has been submitted for this years book. I have to admit I am really impressed and humbled as I look at the work.
