Spruce Flats Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee - from last week. Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon 16-35mm @ 21mm, 4 seconds @ f16, IOS 320
In my blog post yesterday (http://www.richardbernabe.com/blog/2013/04/25/incredible-iceland-in-pop-photo/) I discussed the use of shutter speeds with moving water and I said that I wasn't a big fan of very long shutter speeds with water because I preferred to hold texture and detail in the water. In this case, the 4-second exposure was necessary for the low light - it was very early in the morning on a clear, blue-sky day. I also mentioned how the choice of shutter speed varies with the volume of water and the intended emotional impact of the image. This is a good example of a light, graceful waterfall that works well with a longer shutter speed. When in doubt, experiment!

"Paine Paradise" Torres del Paine National Park, Chile. Canon EOS 5D MarkIII, Canon 16-35 @ 23mm, 1/15 second @ f8, ISO 320
Because of the wind that was furiously blowing around the foreground flowers, I couldn't pull off a long exposure in this light. So instead of stopping down to get the required DOF or having to use an extremely high ISO, I bracketed 3 different focusing distances at f8 and did a focus stack in PS while keeping my shutter speed at 1/15. It's still on the slow side but I pulled it off.
