Social Media Today144,533*Does Social Business Make Sense?* _Not just for people but for the organizations as well?_ *Social Business is the focus of every business owner and CEO.* As we transition to a world of people, connections and relationships where advertising and traditional marketing do not work like they used to, the trend is to reposition a business to work harder for its employees, better with its customers and for its community. When the traditional model of a business gives us some very strong, clearly defined guidelines, driven by the irrefutable logic of the balance sheet, *does it make much sense to really talk about social business?* Is it a distraction? *And if not, can there be a workable path that can transition a legacy business to a modern, social one?* Discussing some of the key questions will be TEDx speaker and author @105103058358743760661. *A former Microsoft executive and a thought leader in the field of technology, people and organizations,* Gideon will be sharing some of his insights with us. Hosting the discussion will be @115620878851836664537  with @102000982871890720967  and at the controller's helm, making sure that everything runs smoothly will be @100470926227322431614 with @115000108263064481690. *Don't forget to join the conversation!* We want your questions, highlights, and feedback prior to, during, and after the event so make sure to tweet @socialmedia2day using the hashtag #SMTPowerTalk  or leave us comments on the Google+ or YouTube event pages! ISOOSI Research Engine3,474*Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing* with Dr. Mani Saint-Victor ( @118176779352783168766 ) and @107656088609554509650  In our last show we discussed how words shape brands, both to those within, and without the company.  Building from that understanding of words, tone, voice, this week we go to the *Customer's story* and how we find and play our role in that story. Its fine to define ourselves to ourselves, in a fixed context of simply describing who we are, what our mission is, and similar things... But how does that matter to the potential customer who is wrapped up in their own problems right now?  How do we present ourselves in relation to a specific issue and mindset without losing any of that true definition of ourselves. In this episode we'll revise the importance of 'story', but from the perspective of the customer's story rather than our own.  We'll discuss how we fit ourselves into a vital and needed role in that story, and how to play that role effectively, powerfully, believable, and above all, truthfully. *Links* G+ Hangout Event: http://isoo.si/Ab23D Watch on YouTube: http://isoo.si/t3B2S Main Comment stream: http://isoo.si/Ab23D Related recommended reading: http://isoo.si/q5FWn Join our wonderful guests @118176779352783168766 and @107656088609554509650, the   #isoosichat   regulars @113426828273677356184, @106515636986325493284 and @116843668885160648294 for this discussion.Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing2014-07-01 21:00:0074

I am thrilled to announce my newest show with @115620878851836664537. Through our interactions on his brilliant @110793088683846123648, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in. *The show break down* _In a half hour David and I will..._ I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. *I will explain the two-step flow of communication:* Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication. David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. *David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider.* Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps! A big thank you to @115091224082668507135 for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0088

Meloney Hall3,392Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.” Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper. Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive).  How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +113865527017476906160  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!    She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.    This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.asp Select YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You335We are just people, and just mere mortals at that. So, how can “we” [in this case meaning you and I] change the world?  Peek at Google. Ya, you heard right. Google!  They research and develop (R&D) innovations online and off, in the medical field, in commerce, in transportation, robotics, learning, life’s longevity and more. Much more. They [in this case meaning Googlers or employees] feel the risk is worth the reward and the falling down means learning up. For them, *learning is what helps fuel opportunity which in turn leads to growth and sustainability.* So how different are We-from-They or Us-from-Them? On this Jess and Scott agree: *It’s not the scale that counts so much as how you feel about it and then act on how you feel.*  Here’s the kicker. In descending order: technology, the internet, social media and Google/G+ can now easily and effortless transfer into our hands the ability to explore our curiosity along with all the innovation and opportunity inherent in the technology. Now, how cool is that? *So, do you see that going forward it’s YOU? We decide next steps and decide Is the risk worth the reward, and are we willing to fall and learn to grow?* This week’s JSY! show serves up case studies drawn from a courageous group demanding change to make our point: Even though our R&D budgets are a smidge smaller than say, Google’s, it’s the culture we set in motion for ourselves and our family, work and country that can make an impact. Might even save the world. In the end, it is the *you and I* that chooses to jump (or not), expand (or not) and grow (or not). For small businesses and entrepreneurs this means providing new and different value for our customers. Join @110746124112827812577 @109237790792840071389  and @106867567997804136918    as we explore innovation to create opportunity which can lead to real change. Mere mortals? We think not. *YOU* (the Y in JSY) take action that matters. Come explore this topic with us live or when you can (Yes, we are an evening show - so responding Yes or Maybe will set a reminder so you can catch the replay.) Jim Shankle1,673It's always a pleasure hearing +David Amerland discuss _*"The GSS/G+ Connection"*_ because it's a subject area with many facets. For mobile viewers click on this YouTube Link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S76tXQ5qZ30  The time for the Event is translated to your local time zone. As a reference, it starts at 7:30 PM ET. _Google Semantic Search_ and its direct connection to, and support by, Google+ (what I am starting to call _"The GSS/G+ Connection"_) is remarkably deep and important. Yet David explains it with such simplicity, ease, and freshness that it's very understandable and enjoyable no matter your level of experience. Unquestionably, there is a wealth of material in this subject matter which means David will never be over-exposed or fail to peel back yet another layer of this *very large* onion every time he appears in an HOA. Thursday night he is joining my _MBA Marketing Strategies_ class at John Brown University (Rogers Center in Northwest Arkansas) via Google Hangouts On Air. David will explain _The GSS/G+ Connection_ from an MBA's and marketer's perspective. He will also introduce some unique "life applications" that should be pursued as an extension of the emerging power of GSS and Google+. Our session will start at 6:30 PM CST for those interested in seeing Marketing Strategies examined from David's unique perspective. *Two facts backing my conclusion that David has struck a deep vein...* 1) He had 22,000 Followers when I started communicating with him 5-6 weeks ago. Today his Followers number over 150,000, and 2) His game-changing book _Google Semantic Search_ - 230 pages (including an extensive Bibliography for those who want to explore the subject even further) that mines (as David calls it) a "semantically dense" subject. Proof that GSS/G+ is a critically important subject for MBA students (everyone really) was on display last week. Friday for an enjoyable and fast-paced hour, David, +Mark Traphagen  +Ronnie Bincer   (aka "The Hangout Helper") and +martin shervington  discussed how Google+ is changing behavior on the internet - to the better - https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0n7nndld5gebbjat1of0dhb124  Even after a full hour, there were many unaddressed questions - reflecting that the session could have continued for the rest of the day. Based on the enjoyable chemistry of these four professionals, most their large audience probably would not have left them had it continued. Come join us Thursday night to continue the discussion. #mktgmba  MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland Explores "The GSS/G+ Connection" at John Brown University2013-11-08 01:30:0064

Yifat Cohen73,399*Do you feel like a good parent when you give your child juice for lunch instead of french fries?* I would. *And I would be wrong.* If you're like me, you're probably going through the same parent's dilemma as I am - *how do I keep my child healthy while allowing him to enjoy all the goods out there?* This is such a big thing for me that my step son has named me a healthologist (there's more to it, join the Hangout to get the whole story - it's worth it). *Quality - Quantity - Timing* My daily struggle with what to put in my child's mouth so that he has a healthy diet is shared with many parents, I'm sure. What to put in his lunch box other than peanut butter and jelly? What's for dinner? (my daily nightmare) Did he have enough protein today? Did he eat fruits? He had a cup of juice, does that count as one serving? What about dessert - can he have some? Should it be home made? Sugar or not..? Just as I was trying to develop relationships with my prospects and customers on a personal level, I immediately recognized the potential of digital relationships as well."Small Business Workshop Series: Making Sure Your Business is LinkedIn2012-10-24 02:30:0013
Mick Fealty13,685All across the world, systems are crashing. In banking we've seen debt slicing and long haul internal systems like that of RBS/NatWest/Ulster Bank literally falling apart. In Europe post war notions of solidarity are being stretched to bursting as sovereign nations argue over the degree to which fiscal sovereignty can be shared.   Further afield the Arab nations continue in popular tumult after several generations of acquiescence under varying degrees of autocracy. Yet like Greece, Spain and Portugal to the north - each just one or two generations ahead - the Arab world is finding that democracy does not come in a shiny, ready wrapped box. Even in more settled democracies, once venerable institutions are finding huge problems keeping up with the speed at which their citizens can communicate, not through them but around them.   Why not join our panel this Friday for #DigitalLunch  at the usual time, where we will attempt to serve starters about 1pm and finish before the hour is out? #DigitalLunch: Crashing systems2012-09-28 14:00:007

Robert Best2,617Google+ Relevance CircleWhat people of "relevance" do we have in common? Care to share? This big shared circle contains my most "relevant" circles according to G+. It also only contains people/profiles who post publicly (Either occasionally or prolifically).Do you recognize others in the list? (I think the probability is high)As far as I know, the visual beside the "Add people" button below shows you the 8 people from this circle who are most "relevant" to you. Also, if you click that add people button, the list inside is also ordered by "relevance".Some people in this circle I know very well... others I haven't met at all (Besides interfacing with what they share publicly on G+) I'm curious, what circles do we share of high relevance? Give a few people shout outs! Let's have a random chat. You were likely notified of this post... I normally don't share to any of my specific circles, so as to avoid sending out unwanted notifications... But since I have you and your attention here... HELLO! Have we talked before? Why do you think I have you circled? What's of relevance for you? (Besides people on G+) If we do know each other... Have we been in touch lately? If not, let please catch up!2015-03-03 01:03:39455000

Sakari Maaranen3,848Here's a circle that's about Life on Earth. Add these people and organizations for everything about the #environment , #biodiversity , and the kind of #values  that can bring sustainable development. This is a broad range of people, many of whom are not necessarily activists, but scientists and experts with generally the right kind of mindset and deep knowledge of these and related issues. Some are thinkers, artists, or younger people with similar interests.Shared because we need more this kind of thinking! Feel free to re-share —  #sustainability  deserves all our attention and is needed right now.Let's make 2015 the year of positive change!Oh, and please let me know, if I'm missing some active people or important organizations. Remember that I don't care about status. It doesn't matter if you are someone new or young or already a superstar, or if your main field is something else. All it takes is some genuine drive to engage and/or follow these topics. So don't be shy! You are as welcome as anyone.2015-01-03 23:20:49115200

The very nature of organizations has to evolve if businesses are going to remain relevant going forward. This will not happen without an evolved understanding of the nature of leadership.
Few, if any, leadership gurus (I do not use that term loosely, if not rarely) understand this better than +Tanveer Naseer .

With his superb book, Leadership Vertigo, he provides the framing, and a clear guide for leaders to get themselves, and their organizations, back on course.

This is an excellent primer, that will give a great taste of the book.
I'll highlight here, what really rings with me from the broader perspective:

I think the most critical place to start is to understand the journey the organization has taken to get it to where it is now. Too often, when we think of culture change, we think in the drastic terms of basically ripping out the heart of the organization and replacing it with some shiny new, oft-talked about approach.

And yet, going back to my discussion of the four Leadership Principles, we have to remind ourselves that our employees are not just workers but members of our community, and they have a vested interest in both the organization’s future and past. This is why so many employees resist culture change, even if they know the culture no longer supports their vision, or worse, has become toxic over time – they have this sense of shared ownership in the collective efforts they’ve put in so far and don’t want to see those contributions tossed to the curb.

So we need to reconnect what we do with why we do what we do, and this is where we can make the first efforts to change the current culture – reminding our employees of why their efforts matter, what the future is we’re trying to create, and then showing them how certain elements of the organization’s culture need to change if our current efforts are to help us succeed in creating that future.

By connecting our past with our future, it makes change less fearsome because we can now better understand the trajectory and especially how it’s not tied to those in the C-suite but to the collective efforts we bring to our organization.___

Interestingly, this is the second piece I've just come across that re-instates the necessity of the "knowledge management" in organizations. ___

But that's only half the story, and perhaps not the most important one.
Blockchain contracts, or smart contracts, can bring reputation to the chain of transactions.
Imagine you want to buy a diamond, but not of the blood variety. With Provenance your freshly mined rock would be given a unique digital ‘tag’ (a very long number) which is put in the Ethereum block chain. Each stage of the production process would then be recorded under that tag in the block chain record — it could be a certificate, a photograph, a piece of text, a contract — in chronological order, with each new addition verified by someone at the next stage of the process. By the time it reaches your finger mounted on a gold ring, you also get a record of the diamond’s entire life. Far better than a flimsy certificate or a fair trade stamp — both of which could be added to this block chain anyway — this is a mathematically perfect, immutable record for the ages.  *Provenance is starting small with a dozen or so of what Jessi calls ‘good suppliers’ who want to demonstrate to customers how their products are made and workers are treated, including a fashion retailer whose supply chain spans the globe*. But who knows where next? If the frozen food company Findus had used Provenance, we’d have known exactly where, or what, that lasagna meat had come from. Palm oil? Supermarket produce? Perhaps even refugees?

Companies that want to lead the way in socially sustainable business practices can leverage this technology to set the bar, more significantly, once the bar is set, it can't be dismantled. ___

The Future of Leadership
The Rise of the Generalist
#leadership

Businesses need a different kind of leadership at the helm if they're to continue to chart value in an increasingly turbulent and uncertain future.
All too often specialists rise to the top of the ranks, and carry with them their bias and blind spots.
In today's world, it should come as no surprise that the generalist is making a come back.

Rob Quinn says he can spot a future CEO before she has landed her first job. As a Toronto-based partner at Odgers Berndtson, an executive search firm, he has come to believe that leadership is less about expertise than curiosity; less about experience than vision; and less about relaying orders than relating to people.

“With a student, those skills are not going to be as well developed,” concedes Mr. Quinn. “But that potential, if honed, is going to deliver results — no question about it.”

What sorts of skills and traits is Odgers looking for? The long version: Superb written and verbal communication skills, curiosity, critical thinking, a worldly perspective, motivation, self-awareness and the ability to collaborate. The short version: “A lot of soft skills for connecting with others.”

Mr. Quinn is referring to the all-but-lost art of generalism. The generalist’s skill is rooted less in a particular discipline than in people. She is a quick study but frequently relies on the expertise of others. Her talent is connecting with people and connecting ideas, considering problems and solutions from every possible angle and cutting through the nuances that often entangle the specialist.

Critically, the generalist is born, not made. You cannot turn somebody who is not innately curious and empathetic into somebody who is. (Or, if you can, the window for that transformation appears to close for most people before university, let alone the workplace.) By the same token, however, possessing the makings of a leader is not enough: Those skills must be, to use Mr. Quinn’s word, honed.

People who do manage to hone soft skills in concert with hard skills bring tremendous value to the modern economy. This perhaps explains the growing popularity of executive MBA programs, or EMBAs. With less emphasis on ‘roundness’ at the bottom and the middle of organizations but increasing demand for it at the top, more workers are looking outside the workplace for opportunities to develop and demonstrate their ability to lead.

+Tanveer Naseer , I'd love to hear your thoughts here. ___

"This Is Big"
Mainstream, Here It Comes
#bitcoin   #blockchain

This is by no means the only indicator that Bitcoin, and much more importantly, the blockchain technology it runs on, is going mainstream in 2015.
Yes, Bitcoin has hit some speed bumps in its early days. But Bitcoin and more so the Blockchain are the way of the financial future. The more marketing muscle and positive brand association surrounding the industry, the better. Hence, adding Nasdaq and Goldman Sachs (by way of Betts’ resume) is big news for bitcoin.

The pioneers, early adopter ecosystem is getting thick and well populated with big time players with successful track records.
While this is going to bring significant innovation to financial transactions on all levels, more subtly will be the innovations brought to the social contracts, reputation, and identity.

Setting the Bar for Educational Reform
#education

Nice to see one country adapting education to the 21st century.
Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.
[...]
"We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.” --

And!
There are other changes too, not least to the traditional format that sees rows of pupils sitting passively in front of their teacher, listening to lessons or waiting to be questioned. Instead there will be a more collaborative approach, with pupils working in smaller groups to solve problems while improving their communication skills.

I'm agnostic about Apple, but even I have to admit this could shake some established players, and shake up an industry to degrees not seen since the Japanese entered the scene back in the 1960's.

This...actually sent a tingle down my spine!
Apple’s cash pile of $179-billion is 20 times the annual capital spending of Ford Motor Co. Its profit is nearly four times higher than that of Toyota Motor Corp., even with the depreciated yen. And its global clout and market value in excess of $740-billion would qualify it for membership in the Group of 20 if it were to become a nation.

And they thought Telsa was going to rattle their tree...
(Telsa, it has to remembered, is heavily subsidized, and does not turn a profit on it's cars. )

This year, we’re clearly in a building/transition year, the second one in a row, and we have to explain to fans how we’re putting the pieces in place to get to the next championship — how the franchise has positioned itself through young player development, salary cap management, the accumulation of draft picks, and all the other variables that go into driving future success.___

Why Social Network Analysis?
For Finding Who In Your Organization Really Makes It Tick

I've been a huge advocate for SNA, and Krebs in particular, for 15 years, and it now gobsmacks me that SNA isn't standard practice. SNA is like an X-ray for your organization, a CatScan, or what have you, that lets you really see a different look inside your organization beyond the numbers, titles and spreadsheets. It should be done once a year or more.

But even that isn't enough. It should be real time.

Better yet, it can be extended to understand the organization ecosystem, including clients and/or customers.

It's not news any longer that organizations are networks. How about we start looking at them that way, treating them that way, and understanding how better to pull forward the value that so often is missed or crushed by the standard bureaucratic org chart and titles.

The Tyrants Infrastructure
And The Devil's Checklist
#cyberspy

The same can be said of all military technology, which has course has help tyrants for centuries.

This isn't a justification, nor rationalization, but this needs to be understood in terms of evolution as well. Technological threats begat technological counter capacity.

I cannot stress this enough.

"To an increasing degree, we're counting on having angels in office and making ourselves vulnerable to devils. Bush and Obama have built infrastructure any devil would lust after. Behold the items on an aspiring tyrant's checklist that they've provided their successors:

* A precedent that allows the president to kill citizens in secret without prior judicial or legislative review
* The power to detain prisoners indefinitely without charges or trial
* Ongoing warrantless surveillance on millions of Americans accused of no wrongdoing, converted into a permanent database so that data of innocents spied upon in 2007 can be accessed in 2027
*Using ethnic profiling to choose the targets of secret spying, as the NYPD did with John Brennan's blessing
* Normalizing situations in which the law itself is secret -- and whatever mischief is hiding in those secret interpretations
* The permissibility of droning to death people whose identities are not even known to those doing the killing
* The ability to collect DNA swabs of people who have been arrested even if they haven't been convicted of anything
* A torture program that could be restarted with an executive order

Even if you think Bush and Obama exercised those extraordinary powers responsibly, what makes you think every president would? How can anyone fail to see the huge potential for abuses?

I am not saying no one would resist a tyrant. Perhaps Congress would assert itself. Perhaps the people would rise up. Then again, perhaps it would be too late by the time the abuses were evident. (America has had horrific abuses of power in the past under weaker executives who were less empowered by technology; and numerous other countries haven't recognized tyrants until it was too late.) Part of the problem is how much the Bush-Obama paradigm permits the executive to do in secret. Take that paradigm, add another successful 9/11-style attack, even after many years of very little terrorism, and who knows what would happen?

No one does."___The Tyrants Infrastructure

Co-Creating
Co-Evolving

This is a superb treatment of the concept.
My favourite snippet:

"Transactional relating works well if the value exchange is clear. But what if the value is unclear, begins to erode or worse, breakdowns occur? In this case, a shift in relating is required.

In those moments we feel anxiety, an incongruence of who we are with what the situation is requiring. But as Kierkegaard said, “anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.” When we feel anxious, we are invited to liberate ourselves from the old sense of self that has become insufficient and move toward more freedom.

As we cannot control “other”, the logical step is to start with ourselves and open up to new possibilities."

Some people might say we entrepreneurs are just too independent or stubborn, but personally, I think it's because many of us feel a sense of purpose that is much bigger than any "job." I know that what I do helps make the world a better place and helps other people do the same in their own unique ways. In some ways, it feels similar to a religious calling--that sense of connection to something greater than yourself.

I mean, why the hell else get out of bed??

Great talk, on a notion that has been around for long.
Remember "the Network is the Computer" that Sun's John Gage coined back in 1984? 30 years ago, already...
Network, interactions, complexity, creativity: these  are related fundamentals, expressed at different levels of abstraction. And just network topology, of course, being a key enabler, already tells a lot.___Social Network Analysis

What is the right way to look at it? This is a life form, it's evolving rapidly, and no one really controls it.
Which is to say, suspend judgement.

Here's some of the more interesting snippets:

The situation was that they no longer understood that market. And their ignorance was forgivable. It would have been difficult to find anyone, circa 2009, able to give you an honest account of the inner workings of the American stock market—*by then fully automated, spectacularly fragmented, and complicated beyond belief by possibly well-intentioned regulators and less well-intentioned insiders*. That the American stock market had become a mystery struck me as interesting. How does that happen? And who benefits?

Having understood the problems, Katsuyama and his colleagues had set out not to exploit them but to repair them. That, too, I thought was interesting: some people on Wall Street wanted to fix something, even if it meant less money for Wall Street, and for them personally.

_The initial explosion was soon followed by a steady fallout of fines and lawsuits and complaints, which, I assume, has really only just begun. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority announced it had opened 170 cases into “abusive algorithms,” and also filed a complaint against a brokerage firm called Wedbush Securities for allowing its high-frequency-trading customers from January 2008 through August 2013 “to flood U.S. exchanges with thousands of potentially manipulative wash trades and other potentially manipulative trades, including manipulative layering and spoofing.” _

ne big bank, Bank of America, shuttered its high-frequency-trading operation, and two others, Citigroup and Wells Fargo, closed their dark pools. Norway’s sovereign-wealth fund, the world’s largest, announced that it would do what it needed to avoid high-frequency traders. One enterprising U.S. brokerage firm, Interactive Brokers, announced that, unlike its competitors, it did not sell retail stock-market orders to high-frequency traders, and even installed a button that enabled investors to route their orders directly to IEX, a new alternative stock exchange opened in October 2013 by Brad Katsuyama and his team, which uses technology to block predatory high-frequency traders from getting the millisecond advantages they need.

In the past 11 months, the U.S. stock market has been as chaotic as a Cambodian construction site. At times the noise has sounded like preparations for the demolition of a hazardous building. At other times it has sounded like a desperate bid by a slumlord to gussy the place up to distract inspectors. In any case, the slumlords seem to realize that doing nothing is no longer an option: too many people are too upset. Brad Katsuyama explained to the world what he and his team had learned about the inner workings of the stock market. The nation of investors was appalled—a poll of institutional investors in late April 2014, conducted by the brokerage firm ConvergEx, discovered that 70 percent of them thought that the U.S. stock market was unfair and 51 percent considered high-frequency trading “harmful” or “very harmful.” And the complaining investors were the big guys, the mutual funds and pension funds and hedge funds you might think could defend themselves in the market. One can only imagine how the little guy felt. The authorities evidently saw the need to leap into action, or to appear to.

Anyone who still doubts the existence of the Invisible Scalp might avail himself of the excellent research of the market-data company Nanex and its founder, Eric Hunsader. In a paper published in July 2014, Hunsader was able to show what exactly happens when an ordinary professional investor submits an order to buy an ordinary common stock. All the investor saw was that he bought just a fraction of the stock on offer before its price rose. Hunsader was able to show that high-frequency traders pulled their offer of some shares and jumped in front of the investor to buy others and thus caused the share price to rise.

The rigging of the stock market cannot be dismissed as a dispute between rich hedge-fund guys and clever techies. It’s not even the case that the little guy trading in underpants in his basement is immune to its costs. In January 2015 the S.E.C. fined UBS for creating order types inside its dark pool that enabled high-frequency traders to exploit ordinary investors, without bothering to inform any of the non-high-frequency traders whose orders came to the dark pool. The UBS dark pool happens to be, famously, a place to which the stock-market orders of lots of small investors get routed. The stock-market orders placed through Charles Schwab, for instance. When I place an order to buy or sell shares through Schwab, that order is sold by Schwab to UBS. Inside the UBS dark pool, my order can be traded against, legally, at the “official” best price in the market. A high-frequency trader with access to the UBS dark pool will know when the official best price differs from the actual market price, as it often does. Put another way: the S.E.C.’s action revealed that the UBS dark pool had gone to unusual lengths to enable high-frequency traders to buy or sell stock from me at something other than the current market price. This clearly does not work to my advantage. Like every other small investor, I would prefer not to be handing some other trader a right to trade against me at a price worse than the current market price. But my misfortune explains why UBS is willing to pay Charles Schwab to allow UBS to trade against my order.

but perhaps it’s too much to expect Wall Street traders to worry about the social consequences of their actions. From his seat onstage beside Warren Buffett at the 2014 Berkshire Hathaway investors’ conference, vice-chairman Charlie Munger said that high-frequency trading was “the functional equivalent of letting a lot of rats into a granary” and that it did “the rest of the civilization no good at all.”___

The Catalysts's Manifesto

This uncover letter from +Nollind Whachell to a corporate organization a year back really resonated with me.
And timely. As I am rethinking and revitalizing my own catalyst manifesto.
I believe organizations need me more than ever, and getting that to sing in their ears like an irresistible siren's song is what I'm trying to capture in my "about me", "why me" page.

The UnCover Letter

Many people talk about the need to let go of the practices of old institutions, along with jobs and titles, but that's as far as they go. What's the next step? How can we build these self-organizing social organizations as newer, more flexible, institutions themselves? How do we work without jobs? How do we work without titles? How do we recruit not for experience but for passion, talent, and potential?

Below is a reply to an organization I gave over a year ago (altered slightly from the original). Hopefully it will clarify what living in this new future means right now.

----

“What is your 'job' precisely?”

Actually that question is a perfect example of why I wouldn't fit into your organization as it stands now. :)

But interestingly enough, by trying to explain why I don't fit in, I may actually be able to explain why I do fit in. Yes, I know this sounds paradoxical but let me try to explain.

Why I Don't Fit In

I have no “job” right now, not even part-time work. I have no notable degrees or certificates. I have done no Organization Development work as a professional Change Agent. My most notable work in the past was as a Systems Support Officer with the Federal Government of Canada and later as a Senior Web Developer with a local Vancouver web firm that built online community hubs for some of the largest video game developers at the time (i.e. Sierra, Activision, & Konami). So from a traditional perspective, there's no way you're going to make my bio sound prestigious in any way, especially to corporate clients.

Why I Do Fit In

But strangely enough, this is why I do fit in because I don't want to be seen as a model of tradition under the old paradigm but rather as a model under the new paradigm that is emerging. That's why I'm a lifelong learner, critical thinker, and big problem solver. These natural traits that I've had throughout my life are why I don't have any degrees and why I haven't fit into most rigid corporate environments because they don't like people “rocking the boat” and trying to improve the “status quo” for everyone. In effect, I didn't train to become a Change Agent, a Catalyst, so much as I was born that way.

You see I wasn't born out of work but out of social play. It was within these very online communities of practice around video games that I started learning about the importance of communities and culture for collaboration. I was drawn to it like a magnet and couldn't stop learning about it. That led me to learn about Organization Development and emerging Social Organizations which I noticed worked very similar to the communities of practice I once helped build in the past. So this isn't theory for me, I've actually practiced these concepts in the past.

Therefore, I don't want a “job” anymore. I just want to do my life's work, alone or within an organization it doesn't matter to me. But believe me, when you fully understand the scope of what I'm trying to achieve at multiple levels, you'll see how those words relay so much more meaning to me. As I said, I want to be a role model, so more than just someone who understands their passion, purpose, and vision in life but also someone who is authentically living their learnt knowledge, rather than just preaching it. In effect, I want to be a social leader, someone who actually leads by example, just as I did in the past within my communities of practice.

So in all honesty, I'd love to work with your organization but only if you can accept me as I am, a natural Change Agent, Catalyst, and Disruptor. For example, I'm not ignorant to the fact that more or more people are noticing something is emerging within me and my ability to see and articulate intangible things in a tangible way is growing (as this ties directly in with my passion, my natural talent). The only question is will an organization allow me to autonomously and authentically work the way that I would like to work inside of it and thus disrupt it internally in turn.

Again that's why I've been a problem in most corporate environments in the past. But at the same time, that's exactly why I'm the very solution for most of these corporate environments in the emerging future because they need to learn how to let go of the past and leap into that future right now.___The Catalysts's Manifesto

You know, tools and levers, and other financial engineering methods are useful. The world economy needs them to keep the organism functioning.
I mean, there is a baby in this increasingly murky and polluted bathwater.

But....but, but, but....every tool has it's limit. And when there comes this near religious belief that these financial tools can continually be useful, the line gets crossed onto fantasy island.
It's no longer a useful tool, but is now pixy dust and fairy tales.

"Nega-Coups" And The Implications Of Negative Interest Rates On The Global Economy
by Bill Greiner - Forbes
#Finance #leadership

This is definitely something leaders should understand.

What do you call a bond which carries a negative interest rate? It’s called a “nega-coup,” short for negative coupon. Negative coupons, or interest rates on bonds, is a rather novel reality in today’s sovereign debt (government backed) market. These are government bonds (mostly issued in Europe and Japan) where the investor is guaranteed to lose money if the bond is held to maturity.

Let me give an example. Currently, German two-year government bonds are yielding -0.21 percent. If an investor purchased $10,000 of these bonds, they would receive $9,958 back in two years. That return is guaranteed by the German government. Recently, interest rates out to nine years were negative in Switzerland. Germany’s rates were negative out to six years, Denmark out to five years, and Sweden out four years.

The growing necessity for more decentralized organizational models, that are more responsive, adaptive, and wired to lead change was always at the heart behind the Glia Organizational OS.

Why a growing necessity? Krishnomoorphy explains:

Change today is exponential and calls for rapid information flows, quick decisions, and speedy responses to unforeseen events. Technology has compressed time, costs, and distance considerably. Given these shifts, organizations have to be agile, simple, and responsive. Once-a-year rituals like budgeting and strategic planning, which were important tasks for the senior-most leaders in the company, are a thing of the past. In a hyper-speed world with multiple divergences, a vertical chain of command with annual rituals creates isolation, sluggishness, and bureaucracy. Management attention needs to be real time and integrated into the everyday workings of the field.

The 21st century company should repurpose the role and placement of leaders. Leaders should be where the action is: where customers are and where decisions should be made. This way their understanding and appreciation of what is needed is multiplied and they become facilitators of action as it happens, not gatekeepers, reviewers, or controllers. By distributing leaders to these critical points, an organization can shape shift in accordance to the context and realities it has to deal with while they are happening. This is what is likely to make it more agile and responsive.

In a networked world, the center of gravity is where the customers are, and leaders have to be part of that engagement. A leader is not someone who sits in judgment but is an active participant in the action, lending the necessary muscle on the ground. Consequently, where to position a leader is a strategic decision and should be determined by the place that will help the company achieve a competitive advantage.

The corner office on the 52 floor is an awesome perk. Bravo. But you're going to kill your organization by being there. ___

Admittedly, I am greatly bemused by the controversy, the conflated ideas, the hostility towards machine learning, and increasingly the distrust of Google that this piece, and the paper examined, generated in response to what +Gideon Rosenblatt explores in his latest blog post.

There's a couple of things to try untangle.
First, search is a type of artificial intelligence.
Related to that, is this bizarre knee-jerk backlash against anything termed "artificial intelligence". It infers that there is only one intelligence worth holding to high esteem, and that is human intelligence. And preferably white male western intelligence (okay, that's a low blow, but hopefully you get my drift).

As decades of research now shows, animals of all kinds have a much greater range of intelligence that we humans conceitedly ever gave them credit for. The important part to understand here is this:
It's an intelligence evolved to solve and sort the problems unique to that species. And even within the species, even by gender, there is intelligence unique to each, within certain parameters.

Machine generated intelligence is no different. It is evolving to solve and sort problems unique to...we can't quite say species, but metaphorical we probably could. And it does so in ways that other species, particularly humans, can not.

What seems to get the AI haters in a particular lather, is when it treads on the domain of what humans think of as their intelligence.

If you've spent a good chunk of time studying and following the growing fields of behaviourial psychology, economics, or even evolutionary development, we get a much more sobering look at the, um, domain of human 'intelligence'. We're not as smart as we think we are. We're not stupid, but our egos often greatly exaggerate our abilities.

Where this gets exposed the greatest, is in complexity.
Or with massive sets of data. Computers, and an exploding field of "machine generated intelligence tools" are helping us better understand the world of complex.

Where else in our human frailties is this exposing?
Our somewhat pathetic propensity towards us verses them, this fear based man verses machine narrative.

If you want to fall into that trap, be my guest. But how about you stop trolling those who both understand the pitfalls such powerful technology can bring, and at the same time the massive potential it can also bring for solving some of the world's greatest challenges.

For those of us in the latter camp, this is about human and artificial intelligence augmented the other in a symbiotic relationship to better the global condition of all living things.  ___

Aaaaah the sexy allure or Venture Capital. And the Unicorns it chases. Or is it the Unicorns chasing VC?
In any case, there is something quite crazy...and paradoxical...about the economics of Unicorns verses Horses.

On the one hand, it is that rare Unicorn that breaks from the pack that is literally a "game changer". Like Facebook, or AirNub, or Uber. They in turn become enormously powerful vortexes of attraction that brings talent and more funding in like a blackhole. And it can be successful.
The problems arise when other start ups wind up having to copy this model, or get starved out. And they don't have the talent, don't have the management, don't have the leadership, or simply don't have the product.

Within all this talk of unicorns and horses, is whether the VC markets are really that good, or better than average of spotting, or creating even, companies and businesses, than the average.
This somewhat infamous (and controversial among the VC circles) study thinks not: http://www.kauffman.org/~/media/kauffman_org/research%20reports%20and%20covers/2012/05/we%20have%20met%20the%20enemy%20and%20he%20is%20us(1).pdf
"Venture capital (VC) has delivered poor returns for more than a decade. VC returns haven’t significantly outperformed the public market since the late 1990s, and, since 1997, less cash has been returned to investors than has been invested in VC. Speculation among industry insiders is that the VC model is broken, despite occasional high-profile successes like Groupon, Zynga, LinkedIn, and Facebook in recent years. "
Note that GroupOn is already yesterday's news (the report is dated 2012).

In this recent article from Institutional Investor (http://www.institutionalinvestor.com/article/3432200/banking-and-capital-markets-trading-and-technology/the-start-up-funding-gold-rush-a-new-era-for-vc-or-just-a-fad.html?ArticleId=3432200&single=true#.VQIIiCvF_jw), we get another sometimes sobering, and enlightening, look at the entire field of venture capital.
Whether it's this amusing gem longtime VC legend Roger McNamee:
Ask him to summarize his take on the industry today, and the verdict is swift. “Venture capitalists — if they all disappeared tomorrow, no one would notice,”

Or something a bit more generous like this:
Whether this is evidence of proactive innovation is difficult to say. There’s some defensiveness in the way venture capitalists speak of the evolution of the industry, and no small measure of anxiety when it comes to assessing the potential of the new entrants. Angel platforms, they say, are an undisciplined, unfocused exercise in playing “sprinkle and sprout,” all “spray and pray,” and angel investors, no matter how organized they become, will never have the muscle or the time — because many have full-time jobs — to be deep sources of strategic guidance. “We have institutional experience,” says Canaan’s Ciporin. “We have institutional memory and domain knowledge. We have pattern recognition that is inherently stronger than just an individual in an angel fund.”

The question remains for many, is venture capital as effective as it can be, or is that more perception than reality? ___
