ISOOSI Research Engine3,474Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing with Dr. Mani Saint-Victor ( +Mani Scienide ) and +Chris Lang In our last show we discussed how words shape brands, both to those within, and without the company.  Building from that understanding of words, tone, voice, this week we go to the Customer's story and how we find and play our role in that story. Its fine to define ourselves to ourselves, in a fixed context of simply describing who we are, what our mission is, and similar things... But how does that matter to the potential customer who is wrapped up in their own problems right now?  How do we present ourselves in relation to a specific issue and mindset without losing any of that true definition of ourselves. In this episode we'll revise the importance of 'story', but from the perspective of the customer's story rather than our own.  We'll discuss how we fit ourselves into a vital and needed role in that story, and how to play that role effectively, powerfully, believable, and above all, truthfully.LinksG+ Hangout Event: http://isoo.si/Ab23DWatch on YouTube: http://isoo.si/t3B2SMain Comment stream: http://isoo.si/Ab23DRelated recommended reading: http://isoo.si/q5FWnJoin our wonderful guests +Mani Scienide and +Chris Lang, the   #isoosichat   regulars +Ammon Johns, +Bill Slawski and +ISOOSI Research EngineRoles and Stories in Effective Marketing2014-07-01 21:00:0074

Meloney Hall3,289Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.”Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper.Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive). How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +Sacha Chua  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!  She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.   This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.aspSelect YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You309We are just people, and just mere mortals at that. So, how can “we” [in this case meaning you and I] change the world? Peek at Google. Ya, you heard right. Google! They research and develop (R&D) innovations online and off, in the medical field, in commerce, in transportation, robotics, learning, life’s longevity and more. Much more. They [in this case meaning Googlers or employees] feel the risk is worth the reward and the falling down means learning up. For them, learning is what helps fuel opportunity which in turn leads to growth and sustainability. So how different are We-from-They or Us-from-Them? On this Jess and Scott agree: It’s not the scale that counts so much as how you feel about it and then act on how you feel. Here’s the kicker. In descending order: technology, the internet, social media and Google/G+ can now easily and effortless transfer into our hands the ability to explore our curiosity along with all the innovation and opportunity inherent in the technology. Now, how cool is that? So, do you see that going forward it’s YOU? We decide next steps and decide Is the risk worth the reward, and are we willing to fall and learn to grow? This week’s JSY! show serves up case studies drawn from a courageous group demanding change to make our point: Even though our R&D budgets are a smidge smaller than say, Google’s, it’s the culture we set in motion for ourselves and our family, work and country that can make an impact. Might even save the world. In the end, it is the you and I that chooses to jump (or not), expand (or not) and grow (or not). For small businesses and entrepreneurs this means providing new and different value for our customers.Join +Jessica Dewell +Scott Scowcroft  and +Terry Leigh Britton    as we explore innovation to create opportunity which can lead to real change. Mere mortals? We think not.YOU (the Y in JSY) take action that matters. Come explore this topic with us live or when you can (Yes, we are an evening show - so responding Yes or Maybe will set a reminder so you can catch the replay.)Hashtag: #JSY  Like the topic? Jim Shankle1,552It's always a pleasure hearing +David Amerland discuss "The GSS/G+ Connection" because it's a subject area with many facets. For mobile viewers click on this YouTube Link - MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland The time for the Event is translated to your local time zone. As a reference, it starts at 7:30 PM ET.Google Semantic Search and its direct connection to, and support by, Google+ (what I am starting to call "The GSS/G+ Connection") is remarkably deep and important. Yet David explains it with such simplicity, ease, and freshness that it's very understandable and enjoyable no matter your level of experience. Unquestionably, there is a wealth of material in this subject matter which means David will never be over-exposed or fail to peel back yet another layer of this very large onion every time he appears in an HOA.Thursday night he is joining my MBA Marketing Strategies class at John Brown University (Rogers Center in Northwest Arkansas) via Google Hangouts On Air. David will explain The GSS/G+ Connection from an MBA's and marketer's perspective. He will also introduce some unique "life applications" that should be pursued as an extension of the emerging power of GSS and Google+. Our session will start at 6:30 PM CST for those interested in seeing Marketing Strategies examined from David's unique perspective. Two facts backing my conclusion that David has struck a deep vein...1) He had 22,000 Followers when I started communicating with him 5-6 weeks ago. Today his Followers number over 150,000, and2) His game-changing book Google Semantic Search - 230 pages (including an extensive Bibliography for those who want to explore the subject even further) that mines (as David calls it) a "semantically dense" subject.Proof that GSS/G+ is a critically important subject for MBA students (everyone really) was on display last week. Friday for an enjoyable and fast-paced hour, David, +Mark Traphagen  +Ronnie Bincer   (aka "The Hangout Helper") and +martin shervington  discussed how Google+ is changing behavior on the internet - to the better - https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0n7nndld5gebbjat1of0dhb124 Even after a full hour, there were many unaddressed questions - reflecting that the session could have continued for the rest of the day. Based on the enjoyable chemistry of these four professionals, most their large audience probably would not have left them had it continued.Come join us Thursday night to continue the discussion.#mktgmba  MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland Explores "The GSS/G+ Connection" at John Brown University2013-11-08 01:30:0064

Thankfully, Gideon
Doesn't Shy Away From the Big Questions
#thebigpicture

Humanity has been given a rare opportunity. WE are living right here, right now in the greatest window of opportunity we have ever known.
What it is, is up to us.
Right now we have every technology and human know how to completely rebuild our socio-economic order. One that benefits the all, rather than the few.
AI will either be a part of getting us there, or a part of keeping from getting there. The choice, my friends, is ours, and ours alone.

Though a joy to write, this one is hard for me to share because it may stir some unintended controversy. Within the frame of the evolution of our relationship with technology, I broach the question of soul.

This is not the typical perspective with which artificial intelligence is explored, except perhaps in works of fiction. I have no interest in pushing some particular religious or other view of the soul; my goal is simply to ask the question: "what if the soul were real after all, and we simply ignored it in our quest for artificial intelligence?"

Yes. It's a brave new world out there.

To some degree, every company will have to become a math house. This will require more than hiring new kinds of expertise and grafting new skills onto the existing organization. Many companies will need to substantially change the way they are organized, managed, and led. Every organization will have to make use of algorithms in its decision-making. The use of algorithms will have to become as much a part of tomorrow’s management vocabulary as, say, profit margins and the supply chain are today. And every member of the executive team will need to understand his or her role in growing the business.

The PS Audio 200C is scarcely cheap at $1649, but I will issue the following challenge: go to your dealer's and listen. Ignore the mystique and hype surrounding more expensive power amplifiers, and compare the 200C to any amplifier, tube or transistor, at any price in terms of overall performance. I have not heard a better transistor amplifier at any price, and that includes most of the big name amplifiers costing at least twice as much as the PS 200C.

I have heard amplifiers that provide a different mix of sonic advantages; you may well prefer and pay far more for them than you would for the PS Audio 200C. Tailoring a system to your personal taste and listening conditions can get to be an extraordinarily expensive proposition, and some sound characteristics depend on technologies and parts that don't come cheap. I will argue, however, that the superior features available in the best rival amplifiers all involve significant trade-offs relative to the 200C. You only get their advantages by giving up some of merits available from the 200C.

I am so excited! Speakers are next on the list....___

I love this article. It is exactly what I have been talking about with +Eric Enge and +Duane Forrester over the last year.

People laugh when I say we should expect Websites and the Internet as a whole to be irrelevant in the coming years.

“There will be so many IP addresses…so many devices, sensors, things that you are wearing, things that you are interacting with that you won’t even sense it,” he explained. “It will be part of your presence all the time. Imagine you walk into a room, and the room is dynamic. And with your permission and all of that, you are interacting with the things going on in the room.”

Oh Boy
Does This Ring True

I have always avoided pyramid organizational structures like the plague, preferring the niches of free agency. The thought of climbing the organizational ladder always gave me the creeps, or worse, being on some else's rung.
Less secure, but more freedom. (early on in my 55 years, I learned job security is an illusion, but that is another story. )
Yet, free agency has its constraints, one my own ambition ached to move beyond.
Yet...

That feeling of being a fraud, like who the hell am I to lead anything, rings very true.
But at this stage of the game, even going back to my semi-comfortable world of free agency is not an option.
The biggest challenge in building something big, much, much bigger than I, isn't the concept and plan implementation, it's getting past the fraud feeling.

You're On Someone Else's Rung

I think most people can relate to the idea of wanting to achieve great things in their jobs and personal lives.

So when moments like this come along where you see someone else so good at what they do and so respected, there’s a weird, lingering doubt that creeps in.

You wonder if you’re as good at your job as you’d like to think

That’s the funny thing with ambition – it can make you feel like a fraud, because you’re never quite where you want to be.

This piece by +Joel Klettke is so dead on perfect. The only bad thing? No image to make this post sing when it rolls through social feeds.

Why do I trust these three with this question? Because I know they use swarm intelligence to provide the best possible insights.

Does Social Business Make Sense?
Not just for people but for the organizations as well?

Social Business is the focus of every business owner and CEO. As we transition to a world of people, connections and relationships where advertising and traditional marketing do not work like they used to, the trend is to reposition a business to work harder for its employees, better with its customers and for its community.

When the traditional model of a business gives us some very strong, clearly defined guidelines, driven by the irrefutable logic of the balance sheet, does it make much sense to really talk about social business? Is it a distraction? And if not, can there be a workable path that can transition a legacy business to a modern, social one?

Discussing some of the key questions will be TEDx speaker and author +Gideon Rosenblatt. A former Microsoft executive and a thought leader in the field of technology, people and organizations, Gideon will be sharing some of his insights with us. Hosting the discussion will be +David Amerland  with +Alexandra Riecke-Gonzales  and at the controller's helm, making sure that everything runs smoothly will be +John Ellis with +SEOWiSE.

Love, Love, LOVE
This Picture and Analogy

The premise has been a cornerstone to my thinking and being for years.

Tearing Down Walls To Build Bridges

Not sure if this is being discussed elsewhere on Google+ but I think this article by +Harold Jarche gets to the heart of a myriad of issues being felt by many that have been building for quite some time now.

The Exposure Economy
http://jarche.com/2015/01/the-exposure-economy/

In 2005, I remember chatting with +David Weinberger questioning him about a gift and giving economy. This was spawned because of my work in building gaming communities online and being frustrated at seeing many gaming new sites (which often generated tons of traffic for video game publishers) closing their doors because they were unable to cover their meager hosting costs. And yet ironically, these video game publishers had million dollar advertising budgets which they often spent mainly on print. Imagine if they had gifted these communities instead, rewarding them for the traffic that was being directed at them?

Later around 2008, I remember doing freelance web work and being frustrated at trying to eek a living from it. I loved participating within the Squarespace community forum, sharing my knowledge and expertise but at the end of the day very few people were willing to pay for my services because they expected it for free. Even worse, the Squarespace platform itself made it extremely difficult to "package" my work (i.e. templates / themes) and easily sell it to others. In the end, I gave up doing freelance web work because I probably could have made more money working at McDonalds for minimum wage.

Today, this continues as I find writing evolving into one of my stronger gifts. And yet as others with the same gift have said, it seems harder and harder to find a way to sustain yourself with it via conventional means. So you try to resort to consulting. But to attract consulting clients you need to write a book which means putting the work into it without pay, so still struggling to support yourself in the interim until that payoff hopefully comes down the road. There has to be a better way though, as these old conventional approaches just aren't panning out.

Letting Go of The Old World

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
— Buckminster Fuller

It seems to me the problem is that many of us are struggling to step into this New World but it often requires us working in the Old World to do it. So you really never are able to make the crossing completely and lay down a sufficient foundation because you keep getting pulled back. Funnily enough this reminds me of working in a typical corporate environment where you spend most of your day trying to work around management to get something done. It just ends up being exhausting.

Even worse, as jobs disappear, finding work in the Old World becomes harder and harder. So as scarcity becomes the word of the day, people begin to build walls and close their doors, limiting the access to their knowledge. Nothing seems to change no matter how much we desire it. We end up feeling chained to these old ways, fighting over scraps at the feet of the Old Kings.

What's needed is for us to be able to leave the Old World behind completely and for us to be able to support each other within the New World in new ways. Of course that's the million dollar question though. How can we do this? How can we see and reward the value in each other, especially on a day to day basis.

Be The Bridge, Be The Flame

Yet some would say that nothing is original, so why pay for it or reward it. I disagree. As +Valdis Krebs said, "You are the bridge." That's what makes us original and special. Yes everything is a remix but not all remixes are created equal. Just imagine your favorite actor and the unique performances and chemistry they bring to their roles. Or how DNA link connectors are often the differentiating aspect between species.

Now think about the same thing when it comes to wanting recognition and value for ourselves and our own work. What did you build upon to create your own work? Was it from the words of a notable author? Or maybe from a new person you just met on Google+? Did you just say "thank you" to them for their inspiration and leave it at that? Yet why should they have to be famous or well written to be gifted in turn for their gift to you?

We need new accessible ways to financially reward those around us daily, to see the potential and value in everyone. For no matter how small their spark, it still can ignite the world, as it leaps from person to person, building momentum with each new flame.

All You Have To Do Is Ask

In closing, I wonder if it is really as simple as +Amanda Palmer said. Does it just take having the courage and humility to ask? Is this why +Maria Popova can sustain the work that she loves because she has the courage to ask for donations on her Brain Pickings website?

Even more so, recognize that she didn't have to write a book to support herself but did so daily by just sharing her own curious and playful developmental research in "becoming" a person (thus creating a sort of "living book" as I said I'd like to create myself before). And if anything, it is her special ability to be a bridge in her writing that helps us see connections and patterns between things that we alone might have otherwise missed.

Maybe it is time for all of us to have the courage and humility to stretch out our hands and create many bridges to both give and receive.

“Your desire to help others is noble, but I doubt you'll find much success unless you allow others to help you.”
— Edwin Jarvis

This is the fun of big zoom, compressing different focal points into one shot.
Here, we have a freighter in English Bay, about a kilometre away, the city skyline about five km away, and making up the back drop, we have majestic Mt Baker (10,400 ft!) at about 80-90 km away.

Here, we have a freighter in English Bay, about a kilometre away, the city skyline about five km away, and making up the back drop, we have majestic Mt Baker (10,400 ft!) at about 80-90 km away. ___

Reality
Verses Perception

+Tanveer Naseer is emerging as one of the leading voices of reason around the challenge of understanding complex issues.

Are All Terrorists Muslims? It’s Not Even Close - Time to deal in facts, not hype, about terrorism

"As Europol, the European Union’s law-enforcement agency, noted in its report released last year, the vast majority of terror attacks in Europe were perpetrated by separatist groups. For example, in 2013, there were 152 terror attacks in Europe. Only two of them were “religiously motivated,” while 84 were predicated upon ethno-nationalist or separatist beliefs."

And in the US . . .

"An FBI study looking at terrorism committed on U.S. soil between 1980 and 2005 found that 94 percent of the terror attacks were committed by non-Muslims. In actuality, 42 percent of terror attacks were carried out by Latino-related groups, followed by 24 percent perpetrated by extreme left-wing actors."

Yes, it goes counter to the narrative popular Western media outlets like to use to generate views for ad revenue, but if we are to actually promote peace in our world, we need to have a clearer picture of it.

Haters will always hate, but that doesn't mean we have to put up with their lies in the face of hard, factual evidence from federal law agencies around the world.___Reality

I actually find this hard to share.
I have an enormous fondness for the United States, and many, many American friends.
Your attributes are many, and I admire your sense of American pride.
But.
I wish you could understand how those of us on the outside are becoming to see you.
Personally, I find it heart breaking to see what's happening down there.

The Sun Tower
#vancouver

This has always been one of my favourite buildings in Vancouver, more so because I can see this view of it from the outdoor walk way to my eighth floor condo unit.
I really liked the clouds and lighting in this shot, so for the first time I've taken and shared this fabulous building here.
A neat bit of trivia, completed in 1912, for a brief time it was the tallest building in the British Empire!!

Anyone that wants to consider themselves a true leader of the 21st Century, needs to have a very well developed sense of "outrospection".

I'd hoped to post this earlier but didn't get the opportunity. This is my message for 2015 and I'll repost this every month or so. When people start understanding and practicing this, we'll start moving past our deeply embedded warrior/tribal mentality.

The Terrorists Win
Part Deux
#freedom

So. In order to combat terrorism, we have to keep curbing our freedoms even more, allow for more surveillance,  more power to authorities, less power and rights for us, until our nations look more like the nations that we're fighting in to make more like, um, us. At which point, we citizens will become terrorists as we fight for the rights and freedoms taken away from us in the name of, um, freedoms for people who are using terrorism to combat our fighting for their, um, freedoms.
Got it.

"And The Terrorists Win"

They do. Again. A not insignificant reason for this, is the seemingly complete lack of ability for most people in understanding how to score this game.
Terrorism is an effective strategy because it induces people to want to curb the freedoms that open society affords us.
It induces us to be move towards the closed society, curbed freedoms that more closely resemble societies from which terrorism is spawned. They win, we lose.
Every curb of freedom is a win for terrorism.

And the terrorists win

'Tighter controls on internet use are likely in the wake of the attacks. European, US and Canadian foreign ministers met ahead of the rally and issued a joint statement. They say it is essential for major internet providers to co-operate with governments and, if asked, remove online content "that aims to incite hatred and terror". They also want greater monitoring of the EU's external borders, and are calling for changes to rules on freedom of movement to share information and carry out checks on passengers.'

So there we go. The biggest demonstration in the history of France, and nobody seems to pay attention to some deals behind the curtains.___"And The Terrorists Win"

Fascinating read.

Cancer: What’s Luck Got To Do With It?

Grandfather smoked like a chimney, ate bacon everyday and lived to be 90. Yet, your best friend, a lifetime vegan who exercised regularly, succumbed to breast cancer in her thirties. We’ve all used these anecdotes to try to make sense of the deadly scourge that is cancer. So do this week’s headlines in the popular press, Biological bad luck blamed in two thirds of cancer cases give us license to bring on the bacon and booze? Not so fast, as the study just published in Science by Johns Hopkins researchers Cristian Tomasetti and Bert Vogelstein was much more nuanced than the headlines suggest.

♦ The premise of the study was the puzzling observation that some tissues give rise to cancers a million times more frequently than others: for example, the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with cancer is 6.9% for lung, 1.08% for thyroid, 0.6% for brain, 0.003% for pelvic bone and 0.00072% for laryngeal cartilage. Even within the digestive tract, cancers of the colon (4.8%) are much more common than stomach (0.86%) despite both tissues being exposed to the same carcinogens and dietary insults. To make sense of this, the researchers turned to cancer stem cell theory: that malignancy is caused by mutations in a small number of stem cells that retain a lifetime ability to divide. They then searched the literature to estimate the number of stem cells in each tissue. What they found was that tissues with higher populations of stem cells were more prone to cancer. This linear correlation (R=0.8; R^2=0.65) was pretty good, extended over 5 orders of magnitude (see graph), and makes sense since we already know that every time DNA replicates there is a finite chance of making errors and that the more mutations in DNA the greater the chance of some of them triggering cancer. In simple terms, a large part (estimated two-thirds; see R^2) of the variation in cancer risk between tissues is due to the difference in their stem cell population. This does not translate into “two-thirds of an individual’s risk of cancer is due to dumb luck”!

Environmental, lifestyle and genetic risk factors pile on top of the basic risk of random mutations from stem cell divisions. To identify cancer types (red circles) in which the contribution of environmental and inherited factors was especially high relative to the random DNA replication-driven component, researchers used an unbiased clustering algorithm that used the product of the log values of the x- and y-axes in the graph below. What they found was consistent with what we already know about some cancers. Smoking greatly increases risk of lung cancer by ~18-fold for both sexes (23-times in men, 13-times in women), as seen by the higher risk incidence of lung cancer for smokers compared to non-smokers in the chart. People with familial mutation in the APC gene have a 100% rate of colorectal cancer unless the colon is removed. Infection with Hepatitis C increases risk of liver cancer by 10-fold.

♦ This new analysis explains some puzzling facts: the same APC mutation has a much higher chance of giving rise to colon cancer instead of duodenal cancer because there are 150 times more stem cell divisions in the former compared to the latter. Another example is that basal epidermal cells and pigment cells of the skin (melanocytes) are exposed to the same carcinogen (UV radiation) at the identical dose. Yet, basal cell carcinomas are much more common than melanomas. The authors argue that this is explained by the underlying difference in rates of stem cell division.

Why should we care about this analysis? Understanding the underlying risks contributing to each cancer type should determine the best public health strategy to tackle it. Early detection should be the main focus for prevention of cancer types largely driven by random errors in DNA replication, whereas vaccines against infectious agents or altered lifestyle will be key to reducing incidence in cancers with high environmental risk.
