Social Media Today144,866*Does Social Business Make Sense?* _Not just for people but for the organizations as well?_ *Social Business is the focus of every business owner and CEO.* As we transition to a world of people, connections and relationships where advertising and traditional marketing do not work like they used to, the trend is to reposition a business to work harder for its employees, better with its customers and for its community. When the traditional model of a business gives us some very strong, clearly defined guidelines, driven by the irrefutable logic of the balance sheet, *does it make much sense to really talk about social business?* Is it a distraction? *And if not, can there be a workable path that can transition a legacy business to a modern, social one?* Discussing some of the key questions will be TEDx speaker and author @105103058358743760661. *A former Microsoft executive and a thought leader in the field of technology, people and organizations,* Gideon will be sharing some of his insights with us. Hosting the discussion will be @115620878851836664537  with @102000982871890720967  and at the controller's helm, making sure that everything runs smoothly will be @100470926227322431614 with @115000108263064481690. *Don't forget to join the conversation!* We want your questions, highlights, and feedback prior to, during, and after the event so make sure to tweet @socialmedia2day using the hashtag #SMTPowerTalk  or leave us comments on the Google+ or YouTube event pages! ISOOSI Research Engine3,479*Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing* with Dr. Mani Saint-Victor ( @118176779352783168766 ) and @107656088609554509650  In our last show we discussed how words shape brands, both to those within, and without the company.  Building from that understanding of words, tone, voice, this week we go to the *Customer's story* and how we find and play our role in that story. Its fine to define ourselves to ourselves, in a fixed context of simply describing who we are, what our mission is, and similar things... But how does that matter to the potential customer who is wrapped up in their own problems right now?  How do we present ourselves in relation to a specific issue and mindset without losing any of that true definition of ourselves. In this episode we'll revise the importance of 'story', but from the perspective of the customer's story rather than our own.  We'll discuss how we fit ourselves into a vital and needed role in that story, and how to play that role effectively, powerfully, believable, and above all, truthfully. *Links* G+ Hangout Event: http://isoo.si/Ab23D Watch on YouTube: http://isoo.si/t3B2S Main Comment stream: http://isoo.si/Ab23D Related recommended reading: http://isoo.si/q5FWn Join our wonderful guests @118176779352783168766 and @107656088609554509650, the   #isoosichat   regulars @113426828273677356184, @106515636986325493284 and @116843668885160648294 for this discussion.Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing2014-07-01 21:00:0074

I am thrilled to announce my newest show with @115620878851836664537. Through our interactions on his brilliant @110793088683846123648, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in. *The show break down* _In a half hour David and I will..._ I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. *I will explain the two-step flow of communication:* Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication. David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. *David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider.* Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps! A big thank you to @115091224082668507135 for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0088

Meloney Hall3,538Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.” Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper. Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive).  How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +113865527017476906160  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!    She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.    This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.asp Select YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You354We are just people, and just mere mortals at that. So, how can “we” [in this case meaning you and I] change the world?  Peek at Google. Ya, you heard right. Google!  They research and develop (R&D) innovations online and off, in the medical field, in commerce, in transportation, robotics, learning, life’s longevity and more. Much more. They [in this case meaning Googlers or employees] feel the risk is worth the reward and the falling down means learning up. For them, *learning is what helps fuel opportunity which in turn leads to growth and sustainability.* So how different are We-from-They or Us-from-Them? On this Jess and Scott agree: *It’s not the scale that counts so much as how you feel about it and then act on how you feel.*  Here’s the kicker. In descending order: technology, the internet, social media and Google/G+ can now easily and effortless transfer into our hands the ability to explore our curiosity along with all the innovation and opportunity inherent in the technology. Now, how cool is that? *So, do you see that going forward it’s YOU? We decide next steps and decide Is the risk worth the reward, and are we willing to fall and learn to grow?* This week’s JSY! show serves up case studies drawn from a courageous group demanding change to make our point: Even though our R&D budgets are a smidge smaller than say, Google’s, it’s the culture we set in motion for ourselves and our family, work and country that can make an impact. Might even save the world. In the end, it is the *you and I* that chooses to jump (or not), expand (or not) and grow (or not). For small businesses and entrepreneurs this means providing new and different value for our customers. Join @110746124112827812577 @109237790792840071389  and @106867567997804136918    as we explore innovation to create opportunity which can lead to real change. Mere mortals? We think not. *YOU* (the Y in JSY) take action that matters. Come explore this topic with us live or when you can (Yes, we are an evening show - so responding Yes or Maybe will set a reminder so you can catch the replay.) Jim Shankle1,720It's always a pleasure hearing +David Amerland discuss _*"The GSS/G+ Connection"*_ because it's a subject area with many facets. For mobile viewers click on this YouTube Link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S76tXQ5qZ30  The time for the Event is translated to your local time zone. As a reference, it starts at 7:30 PM ET. _Google Semantic Search_ and its direct connection to, and support by, Google+ (what I am starting to call _"The GSS/G+ Connection"_) is remarkably deep and important. Yet David explains it with such simplicity, ease, and freshness that it's very understandable and enjoyable no matter your level of experience. Unquestionably, there is a wealth of material in this subject matter which means David will never be over-exposed or fail to peel back yet another layer of this *very large* onion every time he appears in an HOA. Thursday night he is joining my _MBA Marketing Strategies_ class at John Brown University (Rogers Center in Northwest Arkansas) via Google Hangouts On Air. David will explain _The GSS/G+ Connection_ from an MBA's and marketer's perspective. He will also introduce some unique "life applications" that should be pursued as an extension of the emerging power of GSS and Google+. Our session will start at 6:30 PM CST for those interested in seeing Marketing Strategies examined from David's unique perspective. *Two facts backing my conclusion that David has struck a deep vein...* 1) He had 22,000 Followers when I started communicating with him 5-6 weeks ago. Today his Followers number over 150,000, and 2) His game-changing book _Google Semantic Search_ - 230 pages (including an extensive Bibliography for those who want to explore the subject even further) that mines (as David calls it) a "semantically dense" subject. Proof that GSS/G+ is a critically important subject for MBA students (everyone really) was on display last week. Friday for an enjoyable and fast-paced hour, David, +Mark Traphagen  +Ronnie Bincer   (aka "The Hangout Helper") and +martin shervington  discussed how Google+ is changing behavior on the internet - to the better - https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0n7nndld5gebbjat1of0dhb124  Even after a full hour, there were many unaddressed questions - reflecting that the session could have continued for the rest of the day. Based on the enjoyable chemistry of these four professionals, most their large audience probably would not have left them had it continued. Come join us Thursday night to continue the discussion. #mktgmba  MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland Explores "The GSS/G+ Connection" at John Brown University2013-11-08 01:30:0064

Yifat Cohen76,540*Do you feel like a good parent when you give your child juice for lunch instead of french fries?* I would. *And I would be wrong.* If you're like me, you're probably going through the same parent's dilemma as I am - *how do I keep my child healthy while allowing him to enjoy all the goods out there?* This is such a big thing for me that my step son has named me a healthologist (there's more to it, join the Hangout to get the whole story - it's worth it). *Quality - Quantity - Timing* My daily struggle with what to put in my child's mouth so that he has a healthy diet is shared with many parents, I'm sure. What to put in his lunch box other than peanut butter and jelly? What's for dinner? (my daily nightmare) Did he have enough protein today? Did he eat fruits? He had a cup of juice, does that count as one serving? What about dessert - can he have some? Should it be home made? Sugar or not..? Just as I was trying to develop relationships with my prospects and customers on a personal level, I immediately recognized the potential of digital relationships as well."Small Business Workshop Series: Making Sure Your Business is LinkedIn2012-10-24 02:30:0013
Mick Fealty13,948All across the world, systems are crashing. In banking we've seen debt slicing and long haul internal systems like that of RBS/NatWest/Ulster Bank literally falling apart. In Europe post war notions of solidarity are being stretched to bursting as sovereign nations argue over the degree to which fiscal sovereignty can be shared.   Further afield the Arab nations continue in popular tumult after several generations of acquiescence under varying degrees of autocracy. Yet like Greece, Spain and Portugal to the north - each just one or two generations ahead - the Arab world is finding that democracy does not come in a shiny, ready wrapped box. Even in more settled democracies, once venerable institutions are finding huge problems keeping up with the speed at which their citizens can communicate, not through them but around them.   Why not join our panel this Friday for #DigitalLunch  at the usual time, where we will attempt to serve starters about 1pm and finish before the hour is out? #DigitalLunch: Crashing systems2012-09-28 14:00:007

Robert Best2,685Google+ Relevance CircleWhat people of "relevance" do we have in common? Care to share? This big shared circle contains my most "relevant" circles according to G+. It also only contains people/profiles who post publicly (Either occasionally or prolifically).Do you recognize others in the list? (I think the probability is high)As far as I know, the visual beside the "Add people" button below shows you the 8 people from this circle who are most "relevant" to you. Also, if you click that add people button, the list inside is ordered by "relevance".Some people in this circle I know very well... others I haven't met at all (Besides interfacing with what they share publicly on G+) I'm curious, what circles do we share of high relevance? Give a few people shout outs! Let's have a random chat. You were likely notified of this post... I normally don't share to any of my specific circles, so as to avoid sending out unwanted notifications... But since I have you and your attention here... HELLO! Have we talked before? Why do you think I have you circled? What's of relevance for you? (Besides people on G+) If we do know each other... Have we been in touch lately? If not, let's please catch up!2015-03-03 01:03:39455111

Sakari Maaranen3,848Here's a circle that's about Life on Earth. Add these people and organizations for everything about the #environment , #biodiversity , and the kind of #values  that can bring sustainable development. This is a broad range of people, many of whom are not necessarily activists, but scientists and experts with generally the right kind of mindset and deep knowledge of these and related issues. Some are thinkers, artists, or younger people with similar interests.Shared because we need more this kind of thinking! Feel free to re-share —  #sustainability  deserves all our attention and is needed right now.Let's make 2015 the year of positive change!Oh, and please let me know, if I'm missing some active people or important organizations. Remember that I don't care about status. It doesn't matter if you are someone new or young or already a superstar, or if your main field is something else. All it takes is some genuine drive to engage and/or follow these topics. So don't be shy! You are as welcome as anyone.2015-01-03 23:20:49115200

No Matter What Your Business
This is a Very Good Read

Despite what many popular change agents say, strategy is not dead. Yes, culture will eat it for breakfast, lunch and supper, but this does not mean it's something you stop considering.
What you do need to do is consider the context of today economic business environment, and that doing what your business has always done, only better, is unlikely the best path to long term survival.

#science

It's real easy to do bad science. Especially when diets fads are involved.
Bonus points to anyone who can name the song quote.

"[The] study was 100 percent authentic. My colleagues and I recruited actual human subjects in Germany. We ran an actual clinical trial, with subjects randomly assigned to different diet regimes. And the statistically significant benefits of chocolate that we reported are based on the actual data. It was, in fact, a fairly typical study for the field of diet research. Which is to say: It was terrible science. The results are meaningless, and the health claims that the media blasted out to millions of people around the world are utterly unfounded.

Here’s how we did it."

"Org Chart"
Terms To Die By
#itwasniceknowingyou

Haaahaaaahaaahaaa. "Org chart". Great for feeling important, entitled, and a killer parking space, but a lousy way to run a railroad.

Venkat Rao:

Most senior executives — VP and above in organizations of 1500 or more people say — are in the position of surgeons operating on the basis of having played the kids’ game Operation rather than on the basis of medical training and tools like MRI machines.

There’s a very good excuse for this though: the pace of organizational and environmental change today turns static maps into garbage very quickly. The part of the organization that is both possible and useful to represent using an org chart has been rapidly shrinking.

[...]

After a century of subservience, the social graph had reasserted its authority over the impoverished org chart. Up become the direction of increasing disorientedness. Inside became the direction of increasing disconnectedness from reality.

[...]

There are two basic (but not mutually exclusive) responses you can have to this phenomenon of shrinking org-chart views of corporate realities: turn to more powerful maps or step back and reconsider what sort of situation awareness you actually need in order to be effective.

[...]

Letting go means you start figuring out management strategies and capabilities that do not require global situation awareness or tight synchronization and alignment of views, just a rough consensus on a few key beliefs. This means developing capabilities that are, in some sense, antifragile in the face of increasing VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity).

[...]

The advantage of direct approaches is that they are often more robust and often involve fewer modeling assumptions that can break. At a people level, they involving breaking and forming habits via direct conditioning. Their disadvantage is that they are non-intuitive and harder to fix when the assumptions do break down. They don’t give you much of an understanding of the system. Only the means to control it effectively. If you want understanding and appreciation, that’s a separate problem.

The advantage of indirect approaches is that they give you an appreciation of how the system works (the model) as a byproduct of trying to control it, but give up some of the capability envelope in order to do so. Sometimes a very significant amount of capability. At a people level, indirect approaches adapt via cognitive reframing and conscious, self-managed attempts at behavior change.

Each of the four quadrants represents a pure approach that works under some narrow range of circumstances. Indirect-determinate techniques like Wardley Maps apply when you there is low ambiguity about the structure of the value chain (there is a discoverable “ground truth” about the environment), and you don’t have complete control over all the moving parts in the environment.

If you do have control (or can acquire control), you can operate in direct-determinate (Q2) ways: lower VUCA by simply buying up and integrating everything you need, soup to nuts, making the competition less relevant, and using more traditional management methods (the analogy in control is adding more actuators to control previously uncontrolled behaviors, lowering the need for adaptation).

[...]

For a stream corporation, an org chart is increasingly a not-even-wrong construct for thinking about corporate anatomy. Because most of the structure is not formally created or under deterministic control.

[...]

The biggest shared bias of the anthropocentric-seven (mechanistic, organic, instrument of domination, brain, culture, political system and psychic prison) is that they tend to confuse social-psychological reality with all reality, and reductively think and manage in terms of purely social-psychological realities. This leads, for example, to the self-righteous culture-over-strategy meme common to all seven, and to the deeply misguided idea that preserving and extending the “lives” of corporations (and organizations in general) is ipso facto a good idea.

The rise of the stream corporation and the flux/change metaphor is a challenge to anthropocentrism in business.

[...]

Often a smarter, lower-effort approach is to manage anxieties rather than realities.

[...]

In the future, I suppose layoffs will become bleed-offs. Reorgs will become reroutings of flows.

[...]

When immersed in a stream, your view of the global environment is something like an evolving gestalt of emotion and tempo, rather than a mental model you can articulate or document. You may be able to answer questions like Is the organization healthy? How should we respond to this development? and Is morale high? without being able to answer questions like What’s the overall structure of this organization?

To Drive?
Or Not To Drive

This is a question that is getting here fast.

"Today, when you sit in a car, it doesn't feel like freedom. You feel frustrated. What you'd rather do, you can't do, because you're stuck in a traffic jam," said Erik Coelingh, a Volvo senior technical leader in Sweden. "I don't know if it's old-fashioned, but we still think it's a lot of fun to drive a car. For many customers that . . . is really important. We don't want to take that away."

The Sharing Economy
What Is. What Isn't
#sharingeconomy

While we can applaud Uber for shaking up the private transportation industry (taxis for the most part), let's not mistake them for some kind egalitarian vision for the future. Even if it's providing for a pretty good living for its drivers now, what they really want is to get rid of the drivers with self driving cars.

Platforms that piggy-back off of the good will of "sharing", this feel good branding, are (as I posted earlier) sheep in wolves clothing. I'd rather know I am dealing with a wolf, than pretending I am supporting a sheep.
Uber, and other's like it, are just another way to funnel money to the top of the food chain.

+Greg Satell has been one of my favourite quantifiers of the digitally enabled, open source style of organization for four years now.
Here, he uses the examples of the Google approach to solving problems, that clearly differentiate the open style style, and the more strict command and control style.
What is the key here is the culture, and ethos. It's accepted in places like Google that anyone can attack the problem, and solve it if they can.
Nice job by Greg here to illustrate the differences, and results.

There Is No Normal Economy That Will Return

Return to?
"Normal" economy?
What frickin economy do economists think might return? These kids need to get out of the house more often and have a look around.

Don’t Be So Sure the Economy Will Return to Normal

Here is another change that might be a broader sign of a pending reset: A heavy burden of adjustment in the overall labor market is being borne by the young. Wages for the typical graduate of a four-year college have dropped more than 7 percent since 2000, and the labor force participation rate of the young has been falling. One consequence is that young people are living at home longer and receiving more aid from their parents. They also seem to be less interested in buying their own homes.___No Virgina

Or perfect access to all of people’s conversations or purchases? You still wouldn’t know what’s going to happen. Which, by the way, is part of what makes this job really fun. It’s a people business. If we could revise the industry completely, we’d just dump all the business plans and focus on people—the twenty-three-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs.

He acknowledged, though, that his optimism dims once human beings—with their illogic, hidden agendas, and sheer bugginess—enter the equation. “We’re imperfect people pursuing perfect ideas, and there’s tremendous frustration in the gap,” he said. “Writing code, one or two people, that’s the Platonic ideal. But when you want to impact the world you need one hundred people, then one thousand, then ten thousand—and people have all these people issues.” He examined the problem in silence. “A world of just computers wouldn’t work,” he concluded wistfully. “But a world of just people could certainly be improved.”___

Unicorns
And Horses
#venturecapital

A pretty interesting graphic, for those who have a certain 'thing' for this sort of score keeping.
Key term is "valued", rather than "worth".
The horses here will very likely still be around, and survive, when the shit hits the fan. The unicorns? Not so much.

There was a time when it was rare for a startup to reach the exclusive “Unicorn” club, the term given to startups worth more than $1 billion.

But times have changed, and unicorns have become a lot more common lately. According to research firm CB Insights, there are a total of 99 startups valued at more than $1 billion, with nearly 40 of them joining the unicorn club in 2014 alone. In 2015, CB Insights predicts there will be 50 new unicorn startups.

But it's also worth noting that the combined value of all the unicorns is still less than the market cap of Facebook (as of April 2015). As seen in the chart below by BI Intelligence, based on CB Insights’ data, Facebook out-values the unicorns by almost $20 billion.

This means at least one or two of these unicorns will likely blow up eventually and get to Facebook or Google's status. But this is also a sign that it's extremely difficult to make a killing in venture capital. Some of these unicorn startups will likely wind up failing to reach these lofty expectations, and "vaporize" when the market turns, as famed VC investor Marc Andreessen once warned.___Unicorns

It's a bit of a chicken or egg problem, but either way if these persist, it's definitely not a good sign!

Let me add a few thoughts here as well.
What Tesla and Apple both have in common as well, is brand loyalty, and a thriving swarm of brand advocates. Devoted people who buy into the brand philosophy. That intangible sense of belonging to something bigger, and cooler, than the alternative choices.

What we're also going to begin to see -- and this is the advantage of an ecosystem-- is the R&D, the innovation, the problem solving moving out into the ecosystem in a more self-directed, swarm pattern, rather than being centrally controlled by an executive directive.

This is an excellent piece on how to lead, and much much more importantly, spreading that style of leadership throughout the organization.

And So They Should

Here's what I find...funny. There's plenty, more than enough, smart agile minds and people within the auto industry to very neatly adapt and take advantage of the trends along multiple vectors that will reshape the auto industry.
But here's the rub--they all reside in these monolithic bureaucracies that will stifle, thwart, smother, and outright kill their efforts to adapt their company.
It will be their organizational models that will kill them, not the lack of brains or people.

Capitalism is awesome, it just needs to be distributive, and collaborative.

Since I've made the switch, or refinement of focus, for Glia to develop clients, craftspeople and supply ecosystem to produce at network scale crafted automobiles for the driver that wants more than just a mass produced car, the only model for our purpose that would work is a Distributed Collaborative Organizational model.

These models are are pretty much exactly what we need to build out the kind of company I have in mind.

If capitalism is to survive, it has to help protect what "market forces" (read: stupid, short sighted, I matter and fuck everything else people at scale) can't.
Nice move by Apple here.

Apple to protect and manage a million acres of Chinese forest.

Apple has embarked on a long-term goal to be 100% reliant on renewable energy for all its operations, including manufacturing. CEO Tim Cook claims that it already generates the equivalent of 87% of its energy from solar, wind, bio-gas, fuel cells, geothermal power and hydro-power. Apple yesterday announced a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund to protect up to a million acres of forests in China, which will also produce fiber for pulp, paper and wood products. Apple announced a similar plan last month for forests in Maine and North Carolina.

Is this substantive eco friendliness or a publicity stunt to help Apple's public image?

Oh!! By The Way
We're Not Quite Dead Yet

News of our collective death have been greatly exaggerated.
I know, but this doesn't fit the panic and fear industry.

The “everything is dying!” lament

I wish I could add the following to my Aeon piece (at the link), for any who think I’m overstating the “panic and paralysis” effect of extinction exaggeration.  It’s from the Booker-Prize-runner-up A TALE FOR THE TIME BEING, by Ruth Ozeki.  The young Japanese female narrator laments:

”…I hate the idea of the world without old Jiko.  She’s totally unique and special, like the last Galapagos tortoise or some other ancient animal hobbling aorund on the scorched earth, who is the only one left of its kind.  But please don’t get me going on the topic of species extinction because it’s totally depressing, and I’ll have to commit suicide right this second."

But in reality the Galapagos tortoises are doing well, up to a population of 19,000 from their 1974 low of 3,000.  And the real rate of extinction world-wide is not despair-worthy.  It’s get-to-work-worthy.___Oh!! By The Way

The Future of Manufacturing and Design
Localized and Amazing
#Glia   #localmanufacturing   #design

3D printing not only changes how we can build things, it changes how we design things, where we can build things, and most importantly the relationship of who we're building for.
This means we can push the edges of car design and manufacturing, bringing it to our own regions and cities, and bring a level or personalization that the mass manufacturers can't touch.
By doing this with a Distributed Collaborative Organizational model we can then eventually get the efficiencies of scale, local craftsmanship, a personalized product, all at a high value price.

Smart Swarms
Wisdom of the Crowds
#bias   #criticalthinking

It's not that you're not smart enough. You, if you've had any kind of sustained success (to rule out luck) at all,  are probably plenty smart to function in the business world.
But being really smart, means knowing that what you know might not be good enough for what you don't know.
Knowing when and how to harness the collective intelligence of your smart swarm network, or when to use the wisdom of the crowd can significantly help you make better decisions, and allocate and attract resources.
For added bonus points, knowing the difference between a "smart swarm", and the "wisdom of the crowds" is pretty smart as well.

Where I disagree with the article, is it somewhat archaically pins this on "senior management" ::barf:: . Up here in the 21st century, this is something everybody, every single person, needs to understand.

I haven't read the book, but even here in this shortish McKinsey article, the case is pretty convincing.

As I've shared previously on the success story of the Chinese appliance maker, Haier , the rise of the consumer class is looking like a viable piece of the Chinese story, one in which it doesn't suffer a near fatal economic correction.
Stay tuned.

Any big bank worth it's leveraged derivatives will be developing their own form of blockchain.
And even using Cryptic Tweets to find the right talent.

Stop Making Users Explore

Nobody cares about your product. Fundamentally, what users care about is themselves. They are using your product as a means to an end. We knew this back in 1960 when Theodore Levitt explained that when customers buy quarter inch drills, they really are buying quarter inch holes.

1000% agree. I'm constantly reminding clients of this concept.

I've written and shared about Haier and it's extraordinary CEO Zhang Ruimin before. Particularly it's bottom up, or at the point of contact decision making.
You want your company to survive the next five, ten, twenty years? Study Haier and Zhang.

Indeed, Haier has reinvented itself at least four times. The first reinvention, in the 1980s, was the decision to differentiate the company by the quality of its products. The second, in the 1990s, was the adoption of consumer-responsive innovation, starting with (but not limited to) products for particular customer needs. The third, which took place in the 2000s, was the reorganization into a bottom-up structure, in which self-managing teams led decision making. The fourth, going on today, is the reinvention of Haier as a truly Internet-based company, open to the world in a way that few other companies have attempted, let alone realized.

Zhang did not develop this management approach on his own. From the beginning, he displayed a fervent curiosity about management and high performance, and he studied the work of leading scholars and observers, especially eminent management writer Peter Drucker. He took from Drucker, for example, the idea that the purpose of a business is not making money, in itself, but attracting and meeting the needs of customers. If a customer wins by gaining a better product or service, then everyone else should win as well, including the organization’s shareholders through increased profits, and the employees through increased income. A visit to Qingdao with Zhang and his associates can take the form of a management seminar; visitors are subjected to relentless questioning on management innovations that might be of interest to Haier. Zhang often takes his own notes, and he frequently applies the concepts to Haier — first in small experiments, and then rolled out through the company.___
