"Lush"  Peak spring greens surrounding a beautiful waterfall deep in the Columbia River Gorge of Oregon. Catching the greens at their peak is truly an amazing experience. The colors are absolutely incredible.

It is difficult to photograph this stop from the bottom of the falls because you have to fight the mist from the falls. But when things work out the result can be outstanding.

The Blue Hour, Glacier National Park, MT

I love waking up at 3.00 AM to see sights like this? Dont you? NO? Come on where is your landscape photography spirit? ;))

Glacier is breathtaking at anytime of the day and on this occasion we caught a the faint glow of pre-dawn light on the clouds as we were waiting for the sun to come up. To get to this location we  had to climb down a steep bank in dark and we were lucky not to run across any bears.

How was this image taken?
This image used a 4 stop ND filter to create long shutter speed effect. Because focusing was difficult in low light a ND Filter, I pre-focused the camera before mounting the filter. The exposure was set to capture the glow in the clouds and the mountains. Due to heavy overcast conditions only a single exposure was needed to capture this image.

This is one of my Northwest Florida favorites.  I shot this Gulf scene with a 17-40mm wide angle lens at 17mm.  I then switched lenses to shoot the moon with my 70-200 so that it would show up larger.  At 17mm the moon was only be a dot in the sky.  I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Yellowstone National Park, WY

To this this photos I stood in the cold rain and wind at Artist Point for almost 3 hours. Finally the clouds parted and spotlights kept moving towards all over the landscape. One of the photographers visiting the location let me try his Canon 100-400mm Lens which I used to see the details in the falls. 

How was this image created?
I took a single exposure with intent of reprocessing it in the #Photoshop . The exposure had some over exposed highlight, but I knew that I would be able to restore their details using our iHDR workflow. The time of the photograph was important because I wanted to showcase mist...and for this to happen the spotlight had to fall on the falls.

Storms produce some of the most breathtaking photographs and on this particular storm was not an exception. On this particular day we heard this thunder in the distance, but the kids convinced us that it was the Steamboat geyser that was about to blow up (has not blown up since mid 90s). Ha!! 

How was this image created?
I shot this image on the fly as we were running back to the shelter to escape the storm. Luckily for me the exposure was easy to adjust due to the heavy overcast skies. The composition was selected using the rule of the thirds. 

By the time we reached the shelter in the Norris Geyser basin it started to hail and in 10 minutes the ground was covered with 1/2 inch of small white ice pellets.;))<... more »

Just got back from my 1st trip to Yellowstone and Teton NP's.  I had a great time.  This was my 1st, and best sunrise in Teton NP.  I boosted the contrast, lightened the foreground some and increased the vibrance and saturation just a little in Lightroom.  Any thoughts and/or recommendations about processing are welcomed.  I will hopefully be posting more over the next several days.

Moody Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park, WY

One of the best things about Yellowstone is that it often creates it own weather patterns. While wandering around on the first day of our workshop we were surrounded by fog with clear skied above us. This created for some fantastic moody photograph like the one you see here. 

How was this image created?
Because I was shooting into the sun I had to balance out the dynamic range throughout the image. The fog helped me with this. I backed way from the river so that the details were lost in the fog. I set the exposure to capture just the filtered golden light leaving the trees as silhouette. No need to deal with the complicated HDR stuff. ;))

We went on an all day trip to the other side of the island (Hilo) yesterday, including visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  One interesting image to make in this area is after the sun has set; the glow of the lava lights up the smoke.  It is however extremely challenging to photograph.  The light is slow, the smoke is moving and the dynamic range is insane.  I played around for a bit with a longer focal length but just before leaving decided to experiment with capturing frames for an HDR.  I figured it wouldn't work out well since the smoke is moving.  I tried to keep the exposure times from being crazy by changing the aperture instead as well as the shutter speed.  In the end, it worked; I got the detail of the rim of the crater as well as in the smoke and as a bonus even got some constellations in the sky.

Object of Attraction, Maroon Bells, Colorado

How do you display object of attraction? In this case Maroon Bells. On this cold frosty morning I decided to photography the Maroon's Bells in not so traditional way. Perfectly still water of this little reflection pond served as the object of attraction. 

How was this photograph created?
This is a single exposure photograph processed twice: Once for the reflection and once for everything else. While the range of the light was not broad enough to require multiple exposure (based on the Histogram) but it did require blending images from the same exposure using our iHDR manual blending workflow.

Angry Bird, Everglades National Park, Florida

I dont offen photographer wildlife but when you are in Florida and you can catch these angry birds  just by wandering around on the trail why not? If you go in the dry season these birds are easy to photograph as they congregate around the various pools of water. 

How was this photo created?
I waited until the Egret had wandered into a uniform background before framing the shot. The exposure was selected to ensure that the details in the Egret were NOT lost. This ended up under exposing the background. Also I shot in RAW mode so that the exposure can be later find tuned and the details restored.

Punch Bowl Falls, Oregon

I love Eagle Creek area in Oregon...and I have hiked the trail several times but have never been able to go past the punch bowl falls because I am so busy taking photos that I run out time. For a photographer it is a good thing. ;))

How was this photo created?
This photograph was taken when the conditions were near perfect to photograph waterfalls. The entire scene was wet so using a polarizer I was able to bring out rich colors. The soft overcast light made the forest glow and gave it a warm tint. But even with this lighting conditions the water was over exposed in the shot...and I had to rely on our iHDR workflow to restore details in it.

How do you find your macro subjects?

I love photographing water because it is constantly changing - always different - and always beautiful. While Jay was photographing a huge waterfall nearby, I went exploring. Along the cliffs near the falls, I found thin streams of water - creating tiny, smooth waterfalls that were every bit as beautiful as their big brother upstream.

This is why I love macro photography. Details like this. There were crowds of people around those thundering falls. Every one of them was snapping photos - with their cameras or mobile phones. But nobody seemed to notice this little beauty nearby. It was smaller. Quieter. More subtle. The showy one got all the attention - but this one was no less beautiful for not calling attention to itself.

Rickett's Glen, Pennsylvania

No this is NOT Oregon Rainforest...It is Rickett's Glen State Park located in Pennsylvaina. There are more than 30 waterfalls located along a 3.5 mile loop and one of the most visited State Park in the state. 

How was this image created?
The challenge to capture this photograph was to be able to showcase the rich green forest surrounding the Glen as well as to capture the essence of the water falls cutting through the dense forest. For this reason I filled the upper half of the image with green foliage. Even though I took this photo after entire scene was in shade, the highlight of the water were over exposed. I had to correct that using Photoshop Layers & Masks.

We believe that It is possible to use your camera creatively to create fine art...without use of extensive knowledge of post processing. Here is an example. Now one can argue that this is just one example, but I am sure there are other ways to create such as image. What do you think?

Reaching Out, Amazing Yellowstone, WY

Yellowstone is bizzare...and yet amazing. It has unique geology, ample wildlife and weathers patterns that can produce some fantastic photographs. I have visited the park few times and spring is the time I love to visit the park because the water levels are high and the bacteria growth facilitates shots like the one you see below. 

How was this image created?
This shot is about timing. To illuminate the steam from the hot springs, I had to wait until the light from the sun was falling just behind the steam but the foreground was dark. This accentuated the effects effect the steam. I used a GND Filter to tone down the brightness of the sky.

Layers of Masaya, Nicaragua

I have been to Masaya Volcanon twice and both the times the skies were spectacular. This time around the colors lasted for nearly an hour...and the after glow of the high clouds captured here was just as stunning. Our other TGL workshop participants +David Plowchalk, +Karen Rowland Yeo, +Varina Patel, +Jared Youtsey , +Kathy Adams +Wes Lum, +Michael Bonocore, +Lauren Pupillo, +Tom Bilbro +Sharon Bilbro and the kids witnessed some fantastic light conditions. 

How was this image created?
This is manually blended image using our iHDR workflow. This was a difficult blend of 3 exposure processed 4 times. Besides extreme dynamic range, the photograph needed local color temperature because the color temperature varied dramatically within a single exposure. Color of the Wind, Death Valley National Park, CA

It is not very often when both a right location and right light coincide for landscape photography. This was the case on my second trip to the Racetrack in Death Valley National Park. When the sun went down +Varina Patel and I found ourself alone on the Racetrack (all the photographer who were concentrating on shooting textures in the ground left). Looking at the cloud pattern we knew there was a good chance for a good light shot...and we were in for a treat!!

About 25 minutes after the sun went behind the mountains the sky lit up in all directions. I used a GND filter to capture this photograph. Back in early 2006 HDR was almost unheard off and my skills in manual blending left a lot to be desired. So, I relied capturing the scene correctly in camera. Is this an HDR? How much #Photoshop ing is really involved?

When you look at image can  you tell how much Photoshoping is done to the image?

In landscape photograph the light, weather and geology can combined to make this task difficult even for the most experienced photographer. Take a look at this image and try to guess if this is an HDR or single exposure?

Hot pool

Hveravellir is an oasis in the Icelandic wilderness. It is a geothermal area of fumaroles and incredible multicoloured hot pools. 

You can even take a bath in one of them located just outside the hut with the red roof that you can distinguish on the right.
A pretty fun experience!

I went there two times during my trip to Iceland. 
The first time the weather was very cloudy and threatening. The second time was a sunny day. 
It is very interesting to notice that on the cloudy day the blue colour of the pool was much more intense that on the sunny day.

Fragmentation, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

We just happen to come across this location on our first and only visit to Rocky Mountain National Park. It provided stunning foreground for us and the distance cloud cover was perfectly lit by the setting sun. 

How was this image created?
This is a single exposure image created by using a SOFT GND filter. There was very little blending requires ad the filter was able to balance out the light. I did have to use layers and mask to make targeted adjustment to bring out the details and textures in the image.

Ever Come Close To Deleting A Whole Gallery?

I have been musing this for a few days now, I do landscapes and in whole they are fairly well met but as I have said many many times my love lies in the faces of people I meet. So many times I find though I am drawn back to the land and I wonder sometimes if its a distraction from what I feel I should be doing.

With landscapes its easy to cater to the audience because they want to see scenery that relaxes them, I'm not going to go on about how I think my images are stunning as there are those such as +Jay Patel that do it so much better than I do.

With urban shots and especially those of people living on the streets its harder as people don't really want to confront what is there, because it hurts, as much as it does for me to take those images, each time I do it cuts deep and leaves a scar.

Sometime the only point of interest  you can find in a photo is another photographer....and I always have one of those handy. When we pulled into that many Glacier region the mist was hanging around over the water and I took this shot when the photographer was not looking.

How was this photograph created?
This one is all about timing and mood. When we first arrived at the lake the mist had not burned off and the entire scene was very mood. The sun was already up for few hours but the mist help break up the harsh light making exposure a very easy. All I had to do is point and shoot. Few minutes later the mist broke up and the mood was lost.

Day Break @ The Grand Canyon, AZ

After wandering around at the bottom of the Grand Canyon we took a bit of time off to photograph the top. On the last day we got a fantastic sunrise and managed to capture some stunning colors just over the rim of the Grand Canyon. 

How was this photograph created?
I used a 3 stop Hard GND filter and our iHDR workflow to manually blend the image together. The Filter was able to balance out the light between the sky and the ground, but the area around the sun was still over exposed. The sun star was created by using a small aperture to capture the scene.

Oregon is Breathtaking; Beautiful; Awesome; Garden of Eden...I can go on forever. I love Columbia River Gorge....and I am convinced that it is definitely the home of Elves in Lord of the Rings. 

How was this photography created?
There are three other factors that we paid attention to while capturing this photograph. While two of these factor can be corrected in Photoshop (to some extent)...it took me less then 5 minutes to do it right in the field. Here is a video that show what workflow we followed:

"Colors Of A Spring June"
A couple mornings ago I decided to head over to Red Rocks Park (the home of the world famous amphitheater) as it has been awhile since my last visit. I got there in time for sunrise and I was completely wowed by how green everything was. Absolutely lush and backed up by the rock formations it resembled something out of the Jurassic era. The sky had some wonderful color about it with deep blues and pinks which really made for a nice contrast. It was simply a gorgeous morning!

I love wandering in the wilderness just without any particular purpose other than just to explore the place. This allows +Varina Patel and I to get immersed in the local environment and come away with images that different than what you may normally see.

How was this Photo created?
Here is an example of Learning to See in action. I took this photograph long after sunrise while wandering in the woods with my camera. The colors you see in this photo are due to the harshly lit vegetation reflected in the stream. The trick was to select the correct shutter speed. Here is how we did it:

Pro Photographers Not Needed: iPhone will Do?

Here is an article from Chicago Sun-Times about endangered Pro Photographers. When +Marissa Mayer made comments about the Pro Photographers was she correct?

I don't believe that Pro Photography is dead...however what once was a field restricted to few talented individuals is open for crowd sourcing. In other words anyone can be a Pro Photographer these days. 

What is your opinion? Can this occur in wedding photography? Fine Arts Photography? Portrait Photography? Sports Photography?

Deadly Beauty

Nature can be breathtaking....and yet dangerous!! We have been to these falls many times and I would highly recommend NOT going swimming in the water or jumping of the falls. A group of 5 hikers attempted to jump into the falls with tragic results.
