Dr. John Cassone11,938Dr. John's August Selectgood content and engagementThese are people I follow, engage with, and suggest for my new followers who want quality people in their stream. I've also included some of my new engagers. This is not a megacircle. People are only added based on good content or my experience engaging with them.Best way to sort and manage your stream:1. add new circle2. follow it in your stream separately 3. engage with those that interest you (good content/interaction)4. cherry pick those you like and make your own circles5. let go of the rest (or put them in a circle that's dialed down on your stream)If you add too many people too often then you will not build meaningful connections which is the point here.Circle Management Basics:1. Circles control who you follow:> I might feel like reading the news so I have a news channel circle. I don't build relationships with these pages but follow them and share content when interesting. This way I can completely control my stream based on my mood.2. Circles control who your share to: > Share to your interests: I like martial arts but most of my followers do not. By collecting a circle of others that like martial arts I can share specifically to those interested in this topic and not bore anyone.> I have also collected an "inner circle" of g-peeps that I have gotten to know and share more person pics and info with.3. Control your stream flow:> When you click on a specific circle in your stream you can adjust how much the posts from that circle appear in your "everything" stream. > Organize people based on flow: I have three main circles called 1, 2, and 3. I have the amount of flow dialed in priority (circle 1 is high, 2 is medium, and 3 is low). I move people between circles based on the progression of our relationship. > Notify circle: I have another circle with people that I don't want to miss a single post from. This circle is set to notify me whenever someone from it posts. This is a great way to focus on building a relationship with specific people.Happy Plussing :)2014-08-07 14:37:331779413CC G+

Daniel Mihai Popescu52,356They are the Survivors, a circle I'm going to share more often, because it has its own dynamic :)I hope you receive the notification this time, and if you receive it, it means you are in the circle, so you are not required to do anything. Just a "+1" from your part will be greatly appreciated, there's no need to spend your precious time with sharing or commenting. For non-members, I think you have to figure out on your own what to do, because usually I don't promise anything, I'm don't barter my circles membership. Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung believed that archetypes are models of people, behaviors or personalities. Jung suggested that the psyche was composed of three components: the ego, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.

According to Jung, the ego represents the conscious mind while the personal unconscious contains memories, including those that have been suppressed. The collective unconscious is a unique component in that Jung believed that this part of the psyche served as a form of psychological inheritance. It contains all of the knowledge and experiences we share as a species.

The Origins of Archetypes
Where do these archetypes come from then? The collective unconscious, Jung believed, was where these archetypes exist. He suggested that these models are innate, universal and hereditary. Archetypes are unlearned and function to organize how we experience... more »

Google+ is very international and we cannot all master the BBC English...

Join communities, engage, comment, share and participate

Don't wallow in your own circles if you wish to learn and connect:
Let all of the content and insights come out of your heart.
That's what I do.

Google+ is a great platform to "let your hair down", especially when folks realize that they can just be themselves and that there are scores of others who think likewise.

An audience for everyone.

Google+ is what you make of it.

GROW on Google+
Connect. Engage. Manage. Improve. Achieve

1. Goals - What do I need to achieve? Where do I want to be?

2. Reality - What is happening now? How far away I am from my goals?

3.Options - What can I do? What are my opportunities for development?

4. Way Forward - How and when will I do it? How will I sustain success?

This is the methodology (known as the GROW model) I use to set and reach my goals. It's easy to understand, straightforward to apply and thorough.

What is the Project?

My friend, science fiction writer Karl Schroeder, sometimes likes to talk about "the Project".

By this, he means: if we imagine historians looking back from the vantage point of 500 or 1,000 years in the future, what would it look like the human species is doing today?

You can ask what the Project was at any point in human history.

10,000 years ago you can make a case that the Project was developing agriculture and creating the first early villages.

350 years ago you can make a case that the Project was the Enlightenment, the beginning of modern science, and some of the earlier rumblings of democracy.

You can ask what the Project was at any point in human history.

10,000 years ago you can make a case that the Project was developing agriculture and creating the first early villages.

350 years ago you can make a case that the Project was the Enlightenment, the beginning of modern science, and some of the earlier rumblings of democracy.

I'd love to hear what people think the Project is today.

Rules:

(1) No making fun of or arguing with other people's suggestions.   However:

(1.5) Please, please do riff on other people's suggestions, spinning them out, trying variations, and so on.  You're even welcome to suggest opposites (e.g. "Curing all disease" in response to "The end of antibiotics"), provided it's clear that you're not trying to argue, but simply having fun trying to generate alternate ideas.

(2) I'd love to hear some suggestions from left field.  The point here isn't to be right.  It's to get an unusual lens on the world today.

(When asked what was the most important invention in history, Freeman  Dyson answered "hay".  Dyson is nothing if not stimulating.)

(3) In this vein, it may help to think about the Project from different vantage points.  What sort of answer might be given by a scientist stationed at the South Pole?  By a single parent in Bangladesh?  By a day trader in New Zealand?  Etc.

(4) There are some answers that will obviously come up: "solving the problem of climate change"; "making sure the world has enough to eat"; "building thinking machines", etc.  That's great, but if you're going to give such an answer, try to make it a little richer than just the obvious: "Solving the problem of climate change by switching to space-based solar mirrors for electrical power" is more interesting than "Solving the problem of climate change".

(5) This is about what may happen, most emphatically not what should happen.  Please don't worry about the latter (which is, after all, being discussed at length elsewhere on the internet).  Actually, it's quite fun to play out the negative scenarios, provided it's done with imagination and verve.

(6) Extra credit: Scenarios that are new in interesting ways.  If it helps, think of yourself as a sci-fi writer.  They can't just use existing storylines, they have to come up with ideas that are different in interesting ways from what has come before.  So take a typical idea - say, today is about solving climate change - and come up with an unusual twist :-)

This outlines with precision, what services we would provide. I personally know about more than a thousand people who are being subtly squelched, by the very design of the platforms. Seen as lounges though (essential reframing) all proprietary platforms serves brilliantly already.

Deep Stuff: Archetypes

"Campbell, like Jung, believed that all stories at their heart describe a key aspect of the human experience: personal growth.  A hero leaves the known, descends into the unknown, does battle with an opponent who is usually a reflection of some limiting aspect of him/herself, and returns to the known with a boon for mankind, some valuable insight.
The Hero's Journey has 12 stages, outlining 3 acts.  I've taken a stab at suggesting where the narrative fractal element might sit in relation."

Archetypes are unlearned and function to organize how we experience certain things.

"All the most powerful ideas in history go back to archetypes," Jung explained in his book The Structure of the Psyche. "This is particularly true of religious ideas, but the central concepts of science, philosophy, and ethics are no exception to this rule. In their present form they are variants of archetypal ideas created by consciously applying and adapting these ideas to reality. For it is the function of consciousness, not only to recognize and assimilate the external world through the gateway of the senses, but to translate into visible reality the world within us."
Jung identified four major archetypes, but also believed that there was no limit to the number that may exist.

The Self
The self is an archetype that represents the unification of the unconsciousness and consciousness of an individual. The creation of the self occurs through a process known as individuation, in which the various aspects of personality are integrated. Jung often represented the self as a circle, square or mandala.

The Shadow
The shadow is an archetype that consists of the sex and life instincts. The shadow exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts and shortcomings. This archetype is often described as the darker side of the psyche, representing wildness, chaos and the unknown. These latent dispositions are present in all of us, Jung believed, although people sometimes deny this element of their own psyche and instead project it onto others.

Jung suggested that the shadow can appear in dreams or visions and may take a variety of forms. It might appear as a snake, a monster, a demon, a dragon or some other dark, wild or exotic figure.

The Anima or Animus
The anima is a feminine image in the male psyche and the animus is a male image in the female psyche. The anima/animus represents the "true self" rather than the image we present to others and serves as the primary source of communication with the collective unconscious.

The combination of the anima and animus is known as the syzygy, or the divine couple. The syzygy represents completion, unification and wholeness.

The Persona
The persona is how we present ourselves to the world. The word "persona" is derived from a Latin word that literally means "mask." It is not a literal mask, however. The persona represents all of the different social masks that we wear among different groups and situations. It acts to shield the ego from negative images. According to Jung, the persona may appear in dreams and take a number of different forms.

Other Archetypes
Jung suggested that the number of existing archetypes is not static or fixed. Instead, many different archetypes may overlap or combine at any given time. The following are just a few of the various archetypes that Jung described:

The father: Authority figure; stern; powerful.
_The mother:_Nurturing; comforting.
The child: Longing for innocence; rebirth; salvation.
The wise old man: Guidance; knowledge; wisdom.
The hero: Champion; defender; rescuer.
The maiden: Innocence; desire; purity.
The trickster: Deceiver; liar; trouble-maker.

Research nod of thanks +Mani Saint-Victor

+Ron Scroggin :
It's hard to beat enaction when it comes to the experience of music. Mental representations can be enacted realistically enough though, to provide real cognitive experience. Enaction and representation have in common bodily motor expertise, which might explain a bit about immersive cognitive experience.

The authors' search for a base-level understanding of music might be answered in part by the nature of music's communicative power in the brain's own neurodynamic language of pitches (tonality).

The above enaction / motor skills approach is pertinent to the kinesthetic portion of the affordance spectrum we are expanding into +John Kellden.

And the fundamental pitch-language of the brain is an area of  auditory/musical affordances (signs, vectors) that we haven't directly looked at yet. (This topic wasn't specifically in the linked study.)

+Mani Saint-Victor :
You make that sound pretty, +Ron Scroggin

+Ron Scroggin :
Presumably there is a pattern of prettiness (beauty) already there to be found in the tangle. Thanks Mani.

"In a network, the best approach for poking Elephants is through a social layer."
-- John Kellden

Social Business Design: How to poke an Elephant with a Straw

Why An Elephant? Why 11 Conversations?
If we look at what is happening, in Google+ and social networks only through a Marketing lens, we almost completely miss the whole point.

11 Conversations, 11 perspectives
http://goo.gl/y78NGw

Hanging on by a straw
Eg, did you read through the whole Google+ PDF? 11 conversations can here be seen as looking at an elephant, as if from eleven different perspectives, so as to better see the whole elephant in the room.

Looking at an Elephant through your own Thin Straw
Using only one lens, one perspective is like looking up close at an Elephant through a straw, and then decide that your content needs to play well with a mostly grey, wrinkled, textured, slightly abrasive demographic.

Poke the Elephant with 11 Different Straws
And then, if we want to improve our conversion rate, we begin to poke the Elephant, harder and harder, with our straw. This would be funny if it wouldn't be so awfully sad, ineffective and common. People missing the fact that there are millions of people, right here, right now.

Is John Kellden just making things up?
Nope. There's a research turtle: sensemaking -  on top of which there's four elephants: Individual, Collective, Collaborative, and Conversation Intelligence.
Collaborative sensemaking as a design synthesis between individual and collective. Mostly implemented through generative dialogue, and increasingly scaffolded by semantic search and related instances of big data. Conversations begets trustflow begets better data begets decision quality.

Abductive Sensemaking & Being Impactful
"Obviously we think about [that] to some extent. But I feel my job is mostly getting people not to think about our competition. In general I think there's a tendency for people to think about the things that exist. Our job is to think of the things you haven't thought of yet that you really need. And by definition, if our competitors knew that thing, they wouldn't tell it to us or anybody else. I think just our strengths, our weaknesses, our opportunities are different than any other company."
-- +Larry Page

Google is continuing to develop and integrate Google+ as both a UX and social layer - and it is becoming more and more seamlessly connected to all the other Google services. What would be your own conclusions?

Epic and novel conversations in original comment thread:

+Mani Saint-Victor :
Yes!

+Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW :
Both curious and scared all rolled into one.

+Lena Sinclaire :
Well, +David Amerland  it will definitely cut down on the number of lawyers

+David Amerland :
+Lena Sinclaire lol - yeah what a side effect. ;)

+Peter Lunn :
Well +David Amerland I am very happy to volunteer as a guinea pig recipient and receive a batch of your brainwaves by email any time :)

+David Amerland :
+Peter Lunn we need this device now :)

+Pepper Oldziey :
OH yes absolutely!!

You know the nature of Star Trek Conversations was so sparse - two words to each other in the hallway and all the plans were made - sort of like a comment on a post here - that they needed the brain meld to actually do the communicating. Yes we need this now. +David Amerland

+Julia Aspinwall :
I believe we can already do this :)  Just spend some time emptying out and focusing on expansion of consciousness. Through the principle of oneness, we are already connected.

+Daniel L. Davis :
More options to control the masses, great

+Heidi Bouman :
It would both solve and create some big problems at the office - must have it now +David Amerland :D

+Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW :
My wife can do this! Come to think of it, every girlfriend I have ever had can do this! Hmmmmmm....is there a pattern here?

+David Amerland :
+Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW     lol

+Philip Curnow :
Cultural References ... I'm lovin' it!

+Peter Hatherley :
Noticeably words (not images) are what are being transmitted +David Amerland. This ties in with my research which indicated that some of the most ancient names for 'word' are linked with memory not just logic.

+Jason T. Wiser :
This is so freaky! I can see the obvious fears of this tech, but what are some positive outcomes of this?

other than to prove it can be done, I am at a loss for why we would want this tech to exist. Thoughts about how this can improve humanity?

+Peter Hatherley :
To me it is just another way of transferring memory +Jason T. Wiser  Instead of speaking or writing it is transferred directly but consciousness is still involved. It would be far more dangerous if it was transferred subconsciously without your knowledge

+Ron Serina :
I've been saving my best brainwaves for this moment .... now, where did I put them

+Philip Curnow :
I think the time is right to to unfollow +David Amerland

+Peter Hatherley :
lol +Ron Serina

+Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW :
+Jason T. Wiser It will improve charade and pictionary scores as well as my order time at the bar!

+Peter Hatherley :
Too true +Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW Games shows like Who wants to be a mMillionaire would have to change their rules. Yet the current machines do look a little clunky ';D)

+David Amerland :
+Philip Curnow lol, (I will soon know all your thoughts). ;)

+David Amerland :
+Ron Serina we have to start a #brainwaves  storage community alongside our #Cloudwar  one. ;)

+Philip Curnow :
+David Amerland He's life Jim, but not as we know it!

+David Amerland :
BTW you ought to check out +Dan Durrant's thread of this (and the comments) - http://goo.gl/1dKVYd for some real eye-opening uses and possibilities.

+Philip Curnow :
+David Amerland actually, can I just anticipate you here. It's all totally hilarious, I may even follow you again. Lots of laughs!

+Ron Serina :
+David Amerland  Just let me know when I can plug in, better make it more than once a week.
This could give a whole new meaning to WIFI accessibility.

Will there be a decaf section ?

+Stuart O'Neill :
+David Amerland +Dan Durrant I can see myriad of uses, perhaps most dramatically in psychology, yet what happens when the data constructs, ( the 18 million seconds), is directed rather than random? Couldn't each controlled data set create a desired outcome which influences the subject's future thoughts, internal imagery and actions?

+David Amerland :
+Ron Serina there will have to be one, though I think we will all probably go for full-on caf and faster brainwaves. ;)

+Charles Greene
Time to start working on my thought antivirus software.

+Dan Durrant :
+Stuart O'Neill Psychology yes .. and therapeutic, no doubt. Consider if some of us humans augment the capacity of our "mirror neurons" .. perhaps permitting higher levels of empathy, whilst lowering judgmental frictions inhibiting our access to each other's minds. ?

+Dan Durrant :
+Peter Hatherley Images yes ... dreams even. http://goo.gl/ayQf19

+Malcolm Oakley :
Will be great driving out on the roads ;) yes I do think you are a stupid old.......ah but you already knew that.

+Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW :
I was joking a bit on my other comments but will be serious here for a moment. I am new to Google+ so hope that thought will mix well with the mass photos of kittens pawing snowflakes and little puppies licking each other.

If in the future we can hear or read others thoughts I do not think that it will be a positive for psychology or psychotherapy in general because therapy is about trust and expression. Being able to pull thought from someone is an invasion and does little for trust.

Applying social constructionist theory (Berger and Luckmann, 1966), even if we could read someone’s thoughts we could not fully interpret these thoughts in the way that the client interprets them because we would not understand the entirety of the context from which they came.

Going back to my joking, there may be times when I think my wife is Cinderella reincarnated, yet other times when I can’t find the remote control fast enough to turn on the football game to escape.  Both of these thoughts could be interpreted but the context could be missed that all of this is a natural part of the ups and downs of marriage and love.

So, the fear for me is that if this technology were to come to fruition that it would be overly adopted by psychotherapists who partialize people into variables and boxes with no recognition of context.

Now, with that said, I am off to search for photos of kids feeding bread to little ducklings!

+Gideon Rosenblatt :
First - I could not imagine a better image to associate with this piece, +David Amerland. Perfect.

Second - this is fascinating. My only complaint about this piece is that it didn't go into more depth on what the experience is like for the receiver/decoder. Anyone have insight there, or did I read it too quickly perhaps?

+David Amerland :
+Gideon Rosenblatt agreed, we need more, lots more :) and check out +Dan Durrant's thread on this for some awesome suggestions.

+Gideon Rosenblatt :
Will do, +David Amerland.

+Dallas McMillan :
I agree we are on the cusp of this and other technolgically enabled psychic phenomena - I believe once we've reached the point where these things are mimiced with a virtual reality environment we've reached a sort of zero point where they were always inevitable.

+Bruce Marko :
Nice choice of pic with the evil goatee Spock, that is true fan level detail there my friend..:)

+Martin Brossman :
I saw that..  It is a start.

+Iblis Bane :
To neatly book-end +Mani Saint-Victor... No!  ;)

Uh, so many directions and possibilities.  But still such early days.  I remember how excited I was when MIT reported the successful "teleportation" of a photon and claimed it demonstrated that it was possible on a quantum level.  20-odd years later and we don't even have real-time computing yet, let alone anything even resembling teleportation.

From a quick read, looks like the "thought" wasn't actually translatable though?  Just a visual indicator that it had been received?  (Oh look...somebody is beaming thoughts into my brain...)

C'mon...that has to be terrifying, right? ;)

+Doc Sheldon :
I can just imagine some psychologists' mouths watering over the possibilities.

+Amelia Hoskins :
+Dan Durrant Interesting! Mirror Neurons  You've got me thinking... is that not what we are doing on G+, identifying mirror neuron patterns?  We use words, but the images, spaces and silences are part of it.  What a great thought "lowering judgemental frictions" ... world peace starts on G+  ^_^

+Susanne Ramharter :
Completely agree with +Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW. This is intrusive. Not only is context itself lost, but very likely the meaning that a person ascribes to these images/ideas, whatever.
But oh, the joys of technology, just think of the fun for hackers in the future ;-)

+Smiles by Payet Family Dentistry :
+I'd like to volunteer for a dose of +David Amerland 's brainwaves as well, please.  Where's the sign-up?  Will there be an HOA covering it?  When Semantic Search is indexing it, though, will any information shared from that meld be under David's or my Profile?  Hmmmmmm, so many questions!

+Mani Saint-Victor :
Let me rip this band-aid off right quick with a change of frame of reference.  Archetypes and schema- ping to +Bruce Marko  and +Grizwald Grim .

Meaning is the currency of information teleportation that matters.  Thanks to mirror neurons in our social brains as soon as I recognize something in my environment framed in terms of my core values I assimilate it into my identity.  I identify with it, weave it into my narrative as self-relevant and  my motivation system approaches the situation (curiosity).

Right now there are buckets of ice water being teleported onto people's bodies.  Normally, if a mother recorder herself pouring a bucket of ice water over her child's head we would be in an outrage.  The child could get sick, we're wasting water, what about the child's self esteem?

Any time a human sees a relevant self-related meme( prion-like electromagnetic information/energy arrangements that cause mental illness) in the environment we take that social signal in.  From placebo effects, to the decrease in smoking, identity marketing...now being shifted and repackaged as relationship marketing depends on lay epistemology which simply states that in a search for meaning from within bounded rationality our brains and bodies hop into sync through making semantic models of the universe.

The messages are the mechanism of teleportation.  The mythos carries role and identity information from generations before...your brain does the rest when it sucks up enough context to make meaning from the affordances.

Pinging +John Kellden  into this frame of reference to degeek my speak.

+John Kellden :
It's all good from where I read +Mani Saint-Victor  - I would just like to add that beauty can be seen as action at a distance.

+Mani Saint-Victor :
The best other example I can think of is the recent facebook mass emotional action at a distance. A slight tweak and jiggle to 600,000 timelines...

Disclaimer As a cognitive neurodynamics geek I also support the global coherence initiative and the whole planetary standing wave thingie including the coming paradigm shift from competition to cooperation and want to hug a unicorn one day. : http://goo.gl/GrnDPK

+John Kellden :
From nutjuggling to noosphere via Walmart - you gotta admit, it's a scenic route!   :)

+Bruce Marko :
It does pose the question as to how would we maintain our unique identity if we were connected to the Cacophony(my word for social media/ global networking) directly like a Borg. It begs as to wether the cognitive instability of some people could influence the whole...

+John Kellden :
Good line of inquiry +Bruce Marko  there's an interesting space, between #identity  and #connectivity  ...

+Iblis Bane :
I for one am not prepared to sacrifice the former for the latter. :D

+John Kellden :
It could be a both/and +Iblis Bane  :)

+Iblis Bane :
I love an optimist +John Kellden. ;)

+Mani Saint-Victor :
+Bruce Marko we're already seeing what happens when we are directly connected, those with low self esteem develop utilization behavior, (they grab and use whatever you put in front of them and then confabulate the intention to maintain a sense of agency: http://goo.gl/DRLI6G) or we can call it environmental dependency syndrome, drug addiction, eating disorders, obesity.  It all depends on the framing narrative that gets imposed on them by the dominant cultural myth, scripts and social roles.

Those with high self-esteem, self worth, net worth get to look at big data and create guiding narratives that are replicated and amplified (role models) : a la VALS- see page 3: http://goo.gl/Da52QU

You learn the dominant narrative as social studies or as the latest trend all the cool kids are doing.

+Mani Saint-Victor :
Also, to return to the ground level implementation- we're already using brain computer interfaces to control robotic arms: https://news.brown.edu/articles/2012/05/braingate2

We've actually done the same with moving another human's arm in a different state through thought.

It's a comforting illusion to think that the electrochemical information structures that we consider the self-model and guard so dearly are different from the same entities that we call reflexes when a doc hits us with a hammer on the knee.  Espescially when we can isolate and edit a single memory already with optogentics ( http://video.mit.edu/watch/optogenetics-controlling-the-brain-with-light-7659/) & Inception of a false memory by optogenetic manipulation of a hippocampal memory engram (http://goo.gl/xJbcVN).

 +Dan Durrant :
+Mani Saint-Victor In nemetics we say that ppl tend to Notice what Engages THEM and they Mull what is meaningful to THEM, in order to Exchange that meaning with others who are like THEM in some respect. That is what a neme does to our minds in order to form patterns we can comfortably traverse in life, from within  nTubes we share with others. Anyways, I loved the ice water bucket challenge example.  Can you imagine the day when billions of ppl on facebook do stupid things on video to advertise the rewards they seek at Walmart??

+Bruce Marko How do we maintain our unique identities and not become borg-like? Well, for starters, we'll need to make sure that machines don't reward homogenization any more than our education system (and society in general) already does. ASSIMILATE OR DIE.

+Mani Saint-Victor :
Well framed, +Dan Durrant!

+Susanne Ramharter :
+Dan Durrant , and will I need to install some kind of chrome-extension to block out all of the advertising that neuromarketing is sure to add to the messages? What about other kinds of influence. Would you seriously trust anyone else to influence what gets inside your head?

And yes, obviously, we are influenced now already, by advertising, the TV, media, etc. But the thing is, I don't watch TV, I purposely choose the Websites I read news from and I can close my eyes. Can I do that then as well?

Jeez, these wonderful advances are making me sound like a cranky old lady, a real Luddite.

+Dan Durrant :
+Amelia Hoskins I'm glad our Mirror Neurons got us thinking about world peace starting on G+, too.  ^_^

+Mani Saint-Victor :
Mindfulness FTW, +Susanne Ramharter.  Evoking core values allows the brain to look right past distractors and make decisions in a goal-directed, self aware way.

+Bruce Marko :
+Dan Durrant but they will, at least at first. The American education system was homogenized by the people who created it, the robber barons. Their open stated goal was to create a competent labor force, not free thinkers. In essence our education system is the remnant of a gift of greed from those whose vast wealth enabled them to create social disruption on unprecedented scales.

So these systems we are discussing will be built by the modern version of rober barons, and history as shown they will be more interested in profit and self preservation than the altruistic advancement of society or humanity. These will be built with a profit intention, just like the education system, and those who give it birth will likely believe homogenization is intrinsic to that goal.

Though that same history also shows that it changes, that humanity is a variable which cannot be quantified despite their most assiduous efforts and does not well tolerate being homogenized..:)

+Dan Durrant :
+Bruce Marko Truly. I'm wondering if today's version of rober barons are all that different, or if they could see the value in an altruistic advancement of society or humanity. Come to think of it, homogenization of behavior isn't the worst thing. We do a lot of similar things that make life comfortably predictable in society which don't prevent us from necessarily losing our unique identities. But then again, most of us could become addicted to the entertainment of brain-to-brain orgies and the bloodfests of an unceasing war against all who resist plugging in.

I guess the issue I take with the school-to-workforce pipeline is that it can reduce the creative blossoming of the child into a mature adult who actively engages in lifelong learning. When that happens, there are aspects of identity, such as personal strengths, that may get clouded by the professional duties that one has to take up due to socio-economic circumstances (survival paycheck). In any case, I like this point very much "humanity is a variable which cannot be quantified despite their most assiduous efforts and does not well tolerate being homogenized." Let's keep our humanity complex and diverse, especially as our every effort at advancing our society becomes increasingly scrutinized by surveillance and the status quo.

+Stuart O'Neill :
THIS is what makes G+ great. Consider the post. Then see the depth of the comment stream. Follow the links to related concepts, data, information about existing brain-action (for lack of a better phase) connections and you will hyper-informed.
Congratulations to +Dan Durrant , +David Amerland and all of the stream participants. Personally I'll say thank you +Dan Durrant for a substantive response to my small comment. What a glorious celebration of intellect.

+Dan Durrant :
+Stuart O'Neill collective intellect, I'd say, facilitated by this awesome platform and hosts like +David Amerland. Have a great Monday everybody.

+Peter Hatherley :
All least this conceptual transference won't change the way we think +Dan Durrant! Somehow the fear arises within many that a technology that can impart images and words directly to our mind is more intrusive and especially that it could do subversive things, but that's still up to us.

In the 19th century that would have been a TV which at the time would have been extremely SciFi. Same thing goes with any form of media. This direct access to the neocortex is just taking it one step further.

Yet as long as we can still decide  we still have control over what happens next. It's only another entry point, a streamlining of communication to our consciousness.

Yes and no still come into play. So we effectively remain the rulers of our own destiny however the information is reaching us.

+Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW :
I would like to throw a little something into the mix. +Peter Hatherley I agree with your premise that as long as we have control that things will be fine with this technology.

But borrowing from Michelle Foucault, specifically his book Madness and Civilization, 1964, we perhaps don't have definitional control because definition is a social construct of which those in power have more influence.

Foucault maintains that power and knowledge are inseparable and that the group who has the power to define has the power to place meaning on events and names on ideas that will benefit them.

By way of example, in the mental health field the majority power to define has been given to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual V, the current edition.  With it, the book defines sets of symptoms by calling them disorders.

Debates flourish about whether the "symptoms" constructed in the DSM add up to various real disorder constructs, or if these "symptoms" are completely stripped from context and aggregated by the DSM into illnesses that have been created by those who benefit monetarily from the treatment of those constructs.

With all of that said, the risk presented for me with this technology is that some group will decide to use it in a way that will first categorize thought as normal or abnormal, create assessment tools using this technology, and then treat this constructed abnormal thought until it becomes normal (with lots of money to be made).

This thought makes me a bit uneasy because I see how often definitional power is already lost in the mental health field and technology could add to the loss of definitional power of those who seek help.

+Mani Saint-Victor :
Full swoon at the mixed Foucalt and DSM mention, +Christopher Hall, PhD, LCSW.

It's telling to look back at the moralizing slipped in as diagnosis in previous DSM versions and wonder what blame the environment will find a way to cash in on the victims with going forward.

+John Kellden :
This thread is growing better and better. Our selves, our digital selves, and how the ongoing alignment between the two is enacted.

+Iblis Bane :
I'm really starting to think that there is no difference +John Kellden.  We are our selves and our digital selves.  Any separation between the two is almost immaterial.  Each is as valid a presentation as any other presentation of self based on audience.

+John Kellden :
We're seeing eye to eye on this +Iblis Bane :)

#onthisday  in 1071, the Eastern Roman Emperor Romanos IV was decisively defeated by the Seljuk Turks under Alp Arslan at the Battle of Manzikert in present-day eastern Turkey.

“Alp Arslan: "What would you do if I were brought before you as a prisoner?"
Romanos: "Perhaps I'd kill you, or exhibit you in the streets of Constantinople."
Alp Arslan: "My punishment is far heavier. I forgive you, and set you free." (alleged conversation between the two commanders after the battle)

It speaks volumes about the political situation in the Middle East around the year 1000 that Seljuk, the chieftain of a band of a nomadic tribal confederation, only recently converted to Islam, could establish himself as the leading faction in the ancient cultural region and that the grandson of the said condottiero and namesake of the dynasty, after adopting Persian customs and court manners, would already rule an empire almost the size of that of the Achaemenid kings of old. But then, their ancestor Dareios started out pretty much in the same manner 1,500 years before. And now, in the last decades of the 11th century, the Seljuk Sultan Diya ad-Din, called Alp Arslan, the brave lion, threatened Anatolia, the heartlands of Eastern Rome, as well as Fatimid Egypt. And while the sultan was actually about to show the latter what was what, the new Roman emperor Romanos IV Diogenes marched towards Edessa and Aleppo to secure his frontiers and re-conquer the fortified Armenian trading town of Manzikert and Alp Arslan marched west to meet him instead.

After initial successes in Central Anatolia, Romanos’ army of 40,000, consisting of only one fourth of Byzantine core troops and lots of various mercenaries, Anglo-Saxons, Normans, Bulgars, Turkish Pechenegs and Cumans and whatnot, approached Manzikert and the emperor promptly turned down Alp Arslan’s favourable conditions for a peace, seeking a military decision as well as a stabilisation of his own rather shaky position in Constantinople by warding off the threatening Turkish invaders once and for all. Manzikert was re-conquered on August 23rd and after initial pitched battles with Alp Arslan’s vanguard, Romanos’ Turkish mercenaries decided to defect to the enemy and his Normans simply refused to fight. Treason would be the end of him three days later. While drawn up in proper battle formation and pushing the Seljuks before him, both his wings were badly shaken by Turkish hit-and-run tactics. Deciding to take back his centre and calling it a day, Romanos’ own rear guard under his co-regent and rival Andronikos Doukas seized the opportunity to withdraw on his own and leave the emperor in the lurch. His withdrawal was misconstrued as opting for flight and within moments, the Roman army broke away in a general rout. Only Romanos and his Varangian lifeguard stood. And they were overwhelmed soon enough.

Persified as he was, Alp Arslan decided not to treat his imperial prisoner like the Sassanid Shah Shapur did with the captured Roman emperor Valerian in 260 CE. He sent him home to Constantinople, knowing what Romanos would be getting into. And indeed, after the political turmoil and short civil war that followed the defeat at Manzikert, Romanos was dethroned, blinded and banished to a small island in the Bosphorus where he died in 1072, allegedly while maggots fell from his infected wounds in his face. And while his eventual successor Alexios had to call to the pope for help against the Seljuk Turks, a plea that caused the First Crusade, more and more Turkish lords with their warriors and settlers swept into Anatolia and the Eastern provinces of the Byzantine empire were gone forever. It was the beginning of the end of Roman rule in Asia Minor.

Depicted below is a modern imagination of a captive Romanos in classical Roman garb, led to the victorious Alp Arslan under the large banners with the double eagle symbol of the House of Seljuk, by an otherwise unnamed Turkish artist, found on http://www.alp-web.com/2014/07/tunceli-ili-ve-tarihcesi.html

Good Afternoon Dear Fellow Readers

A good book is an immersion device.

Reading a lot (and then curating - hopefully - a helpful mix of #sustainability and #leadership pieces via my social media shares) is a key part of my work. But, it isn't an aspect of work that a lot of people seem able/willing to commit to (cursed time constraints!)

I often remind my thought leadership clients to "look up" - by that I mean read/notice things happening around them in the world or in business trends to which they can TIE their new business models or innovative leadership style. The short cut for "looking up" is at least reading, say, the Harvard Business Review or the Sunday New York Times Business section.

Get in the habit of doing one thing that informs/inspires/generates new thinking for you!

See this helpful piece from +Fast Company to help you think about how to make it a habit for yourself.___Good Afternoon Dear Fellow Readers

Gaia, part 7: Stewardship

Ping +Henk Hadders  +Gaythia Weis  +joe breskin

Using warming to create energy : One of the things on my mind, especially since the realization that the oceans and seas of the world act as heat sinks (Article recently seen called 'Davy Jones’s heat locker') is that the heat which is trapped in these oceans could very well be used to create energy and use a part of the problem to create a solution! Find this wonderfully evocative... using the heat trapped in oceans to create energy!

What is OTEC? : Solar energy is also important to discuss in relation to energy from the ocean, as most of the ocean’s energy comes from the sun. Ocean currents, winds and waves are all created by the sun’s radiant energy, and that solar power can also be used to create electricity. Some solar power systems have been created to generate power for navigation, radio communication and research at sea. The water close to the surface of the ocean, which the sun heats to a higher temperature than deep water, can also be used to create electricity through a process called ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). (http://goo.gl/AFxjt1)

The Background : Oceans cover more than 70% of Earth's surface, making them the world's largest solar collectors. The sun's heat warms the surface water a lot more than the deep ocean water, and this temperature difference creates thermal energy. Just a small portion of the heat trapped in the ocean could power the world.

Ocean thermal energy is used for many applications, including electricity generation. There are three types of electricity conversion systems: closed-cycle, open-cycle, and hybrid. Closed-cycle systems use the ocean's warm surface water to vaporize a working fluid, which has a low-boiling point, such as ammonia. The vapour expands and turns a turbine. The turbine then activates a generator to produce electricity. Open-cycle systems actually boil the seawater by operating at low pressures. This produces steam that passes through a turbine/generator. And hybrid systems combine both closed-cycle and open-cycle systems. (http://goo.gl/j95PyL)

The Problems and the Positives : One problem is the low efficiencies of this technology. OTEC is still considered an emerging technology and efficiencies and processes need to be improved. Even then, some countries have gone ahead and planned OTEC plants. Plusses? They use the very warming of the oceans which has been worrying us, and have the advantage of being a huge power source. I have not found references, but it's logical that they would help cooling as well; more studies need to be done in this area, though some articles point to just such an effect. Life in the Village, part 29: Celebrate

Inbetween the daily grind, the earthquakes, the famines, the zombie headshots and the email wars in our cubicles, we now and then gear up for some village-y celebration.

I'm celebrating the sweltering heat being replaced by a much more comfortable coolness here in the arctic, some major creative breakthroughs on the writing front, exciting meetings with some really cool people - and all my loved ones healthy and thriving.

Something you can share that we could celebrate?

I HEAR America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe
         and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off

The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deck-
hand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing
         as he stands,
The wood-cutter's song, the ploughboy's on his way in the morn-
ing, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work,
or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young
         fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

21C Literacies, part 16: Scenius

"So I thought that originally those few individuals who’d survived in history – in the sort-of “Great Man” theory of history – they were called “geniuses”. But what I thought was interesting was the fact that they all came out of a scene that was very fertile and very intelligent.
So I came up with this word “scenius” – and scenius is the intelligence of a whole… operation or group of people. And I think that’s a more useful way to think about culture, actually. I think that – let’s forget the idea of “genius” for a little while, let’s think about the whole ecology of ideas that give rise to good new thoughts and good new work."

How to understand Twitter's bad new direction.

Twitter this week made two changes: http://goo.gl/XFcSvm

These seemingly small changes indicate a big shift in direction for Twitter.

The first was a two-part change: Twitter started suspending the accounts of users who posted a video showing the execution of an American journalist, and it adopted a new policy and process for handling requests from people who ask to have images of deceased family members removed from Twitter.

The second is that Twitter now adds tweets to users' timelines from people they don't follow. The posts are selected by Twitter for their popularity.

These aren't just isolated changes, but an entirely new direction for Twitter. And that direction is toward Facebook, even as Facebook pulls away in the same direction.

It makes me wonder whether instead of social media being a place for exploring and understanding other people and the world, it instead becomes a dumbed-down information equivalent of "soma" in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" -- the place where we go to forget all our troubles and get distracted by frivolity.

Marketers know that happy people spend more money. It seems like we're headed for a world in which social media sites are increasingly happy and nonthreatening places -- places that present people with a highly sanitized, sugar-coated view of the world.

Don't worry about all those horrible things going on in the world -- just focus on your bread and circuses and buy, buy, buy! Be a consumer, not a citizen.

The recursion protocol hinges on a couple of things:

- holding space
- metacognitive capability
- shared understanding

The two patterns that are still the bedrock of almost all digital communication:

- I need to express myself (person, brand, ...)
- What's happening? (audience, consumer,...)

Around eighty percent of all digital expressions remain marketing, and around sixty, seventy percent of the What's Happening - need, is fulfilled by the consumption of images.

Gasbags and Lurkers doesn't exist
People post, or not. People comment, or not. People respond to the comments, cocreating a conversation, or not. It's perfect.

It's a choice, and we can simply hold space for everyone to be able to honor their own choice.

As long as we

- add value to the community - through honoring the rediscover, rekindle, revitalize principles, including when eg only reading

- add value to others, through considered, considerate comments, and

- add what holds value to us,

then all is well.

21C Enaction, part 8: A Good Life

+Kristin Drysdale :
Change Makers define what a "Good Life" is for them...

My good life is breathing each moment, rich AND mundane, into the next... embracing fear and conquering demons... always seeking - always striving... never satisfied with complacency. A woman's work is never done... and I wouldn't trade it for a thing. It's an honor and my privilege to serve.

To this state was I born to this earth: a child wanting to learn; a woman with an insatiable need to nurture; and a goddess in embryo with powers I've yet to harness.

May our work be never-ending and ever-lasting. Feel free to share your picture of the good life , and have a Happy Friday, my friends!

Change Makers define what a "Good Life" is for them...

What matters most in the depth and heart of your being? What is truly essential? How often do you engage with yourself, engage in your inner relationship and dialog?

What matters most is anything other than some kinda new agey touchy feely bumberstickerism, those questions are essential and generative. What do they generate?

Your life. Filled with goodness and gratitude. Your greater purpose amplified, actualized and ignited. Your desire and ability to be the agent of change, the mindful leader, the intercessor of peace you were born to be. Period.

Insert your own unique and highest desire here and below in comments.

Step up. Blaze on. Be bold. Be brilliant. If you're not scarin' yourself just a little you're still hiding, still playing small.

+Ron Scroggin :
I hope that like music, conversation is an art-science +Amelia Hoskins.

Although I sometimes go wading in the waters of complexity I'm a sucker for the clarity of presentations like the Teaching and Learning Styles page. I suspect I started out as more visual, followed by auditory.

+Ron Scroggin :
+John Kellden I would like to see musical and music-like awareness shared more, among just about everybody, so that being an artist is a regular part of life (as it already is when we're born, as suggested in the Krueger article), and that goes for visual and tactile (and textile) arts, and literature, and kinetic arts. All these things are part of the conversation.

Maybe some of the modular affordance of the (read-and-write style) Plug and Play Method Cards can be transformed into other styles as well (visual, auditory, kinesthetic).

+John Kellden :
One of the best lines of inquiry I've ever read +Ron Scroggin

Let's!

Placing some stuff on the session table in case we need it:

- Ken Robinson video - could be he has outlined a good enough starting pull, a combined goal and attractor

- intelligences as enabling dynamic representation

- KE, ICSE, ValueWeb Play Space (or similar umwelt representation, learning environment) as prototype intelligences translation, transformation affordance

Card session to check whether we can start with those three items on the table or if we need more...

+John Kellden :
<thinking out loud>

Two-player session - a pre-session ( Ron and John )

Starting simple, with one card - the objective being linking one card(text) with a possible resonant, a card(image) so to speak. Then check if these two can be "read", if they "speak" to us, if they set up a good enough translation, and what (if possible) to call the resonance/edge between.

(we can use the 21C ValueWeb space for the session)

Remix, recursion: The below comment thread

+Grizwald Grim :
inference?
It's clearer to me when you say archetype over 'digital artifact' - but note that it maps to identity formation, and that the chakra system of seven candles balances maps really well to making a memetically viable artifact of any type...

+Grizwald Grim :
Conjecture
If you can teach +Kristin Drysdale how to dance in the memesphere, there's a lot of data about kinesthetic art in her head.

#CVTdeck  Q2

+Grizwald Grim :
Conjecture
The anchor should be the CTA as collaborative opportunity - at minimum in the form of participatory content/expertise marketing - does social proof as contributor to a successful venture provide sufficient ROI re: time/energy management?

+John Kellden :
Thanks much +Grizwald Grim  for setting up a beginning scene for you, me, +Kristin Drysdale  and +Ron Scroggin !

-------------------------

Yes. Four of the archetypes I've begun to map:

- Epimetheus/Prometheus
- Mermaid/Unicorn

Me and +Mani Saint-Victor  have coralled some of the dynamics in a couple of HoA's.

+John Kellden :
"Memetically viable", as both sign and vector, maps really well with #biosemiotics

+John Kellden :
Connecting dots, aligning vectors:

Archetype: Rockstar
Artifact: Guitar
Audience: Resonant parts of our embodiment

The slightly de-constructed Guitar in the image, affords perspective.

+Grizwald Grim :
+John Kellden I'd prefer the archetype reflected the mermaid/unicorn genre personally, but let the framing fit the market.

+John Kellden :
Excellent conjectures as always +Grizwald Grim  - anchoring can be (re)framed as niche in an ecosystem, as umwelt in a semiosphere. The CTA is then a slightly better handshake in a protocol that is at least partially, not only understood, but embraced.

Could well be, that a large part of CTA's are about

#emulate

Rich context here:
http://www.gizmag.com/emulator-dj-touchscreen-mixing-desk/20607/

+John Kellden :
<noticing excellent network protocol in the making>
Great weaving +Grizwald Grim

Some of our session ( +Ron Scroggin and me in another space), is almost bound to resonate with quite a few of the lines of inquiry, the unfolding, the weaving, we've begun in this thread. I'd like to leave to Ron, sending "dispatches", from there to here, so to speak...

stay tuned for further updates...    :)

Dynamic Narrative Alignment

Towards a Narrative pattern language. The numbers are work in progress  and design synthesis through weaving between Metacognition Map, Tea House Sequences, Modular Collaborative Sensemaking and Storyweaving. One of several possible  projects out of this is a set of metatags making for a better handshake, a better alignment between our own biosemiosis and sensemaking and automatic hashtag suggestions by digital platform algorithms.

Paper:    http://goo.gl/s5t2gV  (55)
"multi-voiced dialogues as battles between centrifugal and centripetal forces"

+John Kellden annotation:
"multi-voiced dialogues as tacit collaborative sensemaking (in)between individual sensemaking and collective sensemaking"

This annotation, translation, extension, also allows us to reweave dialogue with dynamic narrative alignment, given that sensemaking takes place in an ontological space, rather than from only one point of view:

"If people have multiple identities and deal with multiple realities, why should we expect them to be ontological purists? To do so is to limit their capability for sensemaking."
-- Karl Weick

This, when applied, is the generative interpretation of

"These are my values, and if you don't like them, I have others."
-- Groucho Marx

One of the many functions of play, once we fully emulate, embrace, embody and enact playfulness, playful play and play, is, it enables us to rediscover our own true ontological space. Or at the very least, as close to a true space that our solemnity will allow.

Enaction

"A living organism enacts the world it lives in; its embodied action in the world constitutes its perception and thereby grounds its cognition."
-- John Stewart    http://goo.gl/2EqIxH

Conversations that Mind and Matter:

A conversational structure, an environment conducive to conversations that mind and matter, can be cocreated through the participants combining:

agency, curiosity, inclusivity

Agency is primarily performed by commenting on a post. Curiosity is primarily an individual quality, the participants being curious both about the post and whereto the thread will lead them. Inclusivity is primarily a collective quality, the participants as a whole, holding space beyond individual agendas.

Gaia: Seven thousand languages

If I would be as authentic as possible, I probably would have to communicate using swedish, my native language. Even though G+ provides a translation button on the comments, a lot of misunderstanding would probably ensue as a result. The somewhat counterintuitive conclusion is, I need to find a balance between authenticity and shared understanding.

Similar reasoning can be applied to almost all differences when it comes to semiotics, signalling, communication, cultural codes...
