Daniel Mihai Popescu61,295This circle is called Survivors!  It is dedicated to all of you :)I waited to fill it a little more with some new faces :)I hope you are notified, if not, nothing changes.Just a "+1" is more than enough (and I speak here for the members) #danielmihaipopescusharedcircles   #maximumperformance  It is an homage to you, so there's no need to share it, there are no conditions. If I forgot any of you, please forgive me and tell me, instead of uncircle me without notice :)I never was in "follow me and I'll follow you back" game, not here, nor on Twitter, where people are more liberal :)I'm out of the sharing circles game, as most of you already have noticed, and it's up to anyone to do whatever he/she/it likes with that :) I thank to any of you who kept in their public shared circles the time I have been absent (there was a very motivated reason for it), and I'm absolutely passive about the people who took me out of their public circles, considering they have not an immediate benefit from that. Oh, and I'm very glad because some circle spammers have unfollowed me. I do not really deserve their company :)Have a wonderful weekend, dear friends!2014-10-18 18:08:10469333748

Dr. John Cassone12,100Dr. John's Selectgood content and engagementThese are people I follow, engage with, and suggest for my new followers who want quality people in their stream. This circle changes each time I share it based on how people are engaging and sharing content. This is not a megacircle.People are only added based on good content or my experience engaging with them.Best way to sort and manage your stream:1. add new circle2. follow it in your stream separately 3. engage with those that interest you (good content/interaction)4. cherry pick those you like and make your own circles5. let go of the rest (or put them in a circle that's dialed down on your stream)If you add too many people too often then you will not build meaningful connections which is the point here.Circle Management Basics:1. Circles control who you follow:►   I might feel like reading the news so I have a news channel circle. I don't build relationships with these pages but follow them and share content when interesting. This way I can completely control my stream based on my mood.2. Circles control who your share to: ►   Share to your interests: I like martial arts but most of my followers do not. By collecting a circle of others that like martial arts I can share specifically to those interested in this topic and not bore anyone.►  I have also collected an "inner circle" of g-peeps that I have gotten to know and share more person pics and info with.3. Control your stream flow:►   When you click on a specific circle in your stream you can adjust how much the posts from that circle appear in your "everything" stream. ►   Organize people based on flow: I have three main circles called 1, 2, and 3. I have the amount of flow dialed in priority (circle 1 is high, 2 is medium, and 3 is low). I move people between circles based on the progression of our relationship. ►   Notify circle: I have another circle with people that I don't want to miss a single post from. This circle is set to notify me whenever someone from it posts. This is a great way to focus on building a relationship with specific people.Happy Plussing :)2014-09-07 19:22:331921015

If you add the circle, it's definitively your gain, so I strongly suggest you to do so. The circle's title is not in vain, it really suggests the circle's dynamic. #danielmihaipopescusharedcircle   #maximumperformance  This, like all of my other circles, is an homage to you.Thank you very much for being my friends!2014-06-26 14:46:19412442853

Communities are, in my opinion, one of the two strongest features of Google+. Online communities have existed since the first days of the Internet. They can act as channels for each area of interest and indeed, many topics like Android, guitar, storytelling have memberships in the hundreds of thousands.

Good Morning Dear Fellow Poets

When I was in high school I knew nothing of poetry, except a schoolgirl's frustration at not being able to answer that maddening question so often thrown at students: What is poetry?

And then I went to St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and one night was invited to the home of tutor Charles G. Bell, whose friend Galway Kinnell was giving a reading of his poems. By the fireside. With students sitting on sofas and Indian rugs on the floor.

I was mesmerized. By Kinnell, of course, because he was gorgeous. But by something else that was completely new to me - a live poetic voice. Until that time, I had always read silently to myself. Words lay on pages and were, mostly, quiet. Unless they were words spoken in a play. Or in a speech. Or in a movie.

But until that night I had never heard a poet read their own words. And it changed everything for me. To this day, I read poetry out loud (and many other kinds of writing too, especially letters).

Years later I heard him read again at the 92 Street Y in New York City, in front of hundreds of people in a big room, standing at a podium, dressed in corduroy pants and a shirt and an elegant blazer. That deep, confident, present and energetic, yet serene voice rolling over the audience like a crackling fire.

It is impossible to choose which of his poems is my favorite. But there is one that lingers within me always, words and phrases from which pop into my head quite unexpectedly, usually when I am driving, or walking down the street, or surrounded by nature.

It is called When One Has Lived a Long Time Alone, and I copy the entire poem here in honor of Mr. Kinnell.  It resonated with me the instant I read it, because I had lived a long time alone.

Read it out loud, if you dare...

When One Has Lived A Long Time Alone - Galway Kinnell

1

When one has lived a long time alone
one refrains from swatting the fly
and lets him go, and one hesitates to strike
the mosquito, though more than willing go slap
the flesh under her, and one lifts the toad
from the pit too deep for him to hop out of
and carries him to the grass, without minding
the toxic urine he slicks his body with,
and one envelops, in a towel, the swift
who fell down the chimney and knocks herself
against the window glass and releases her outside
and watches her fly free, a life line flung at reality,
when one has lived a long time alone.

2

When one has lived a long time alone,
one grabs the snake behind the head
and holds him until he stops trying to stick
the orange tongue, which splits at the end
into two black filaments and jumps out
like a fire-eater's belches and has little
in common with the pimpled pink lump that shapes
sounds and sleeps inside the human mouth,
into one's flesh, and clamps it between his jaws,
letting the gaudy tips show, as children do
when concentrating, and as very likely
one down oneself, without knowing it,
when one has lived a long time alone.

3

When one has lived a long time alone,
among regrets so immense the past occupies
nearly all the room there is in consciousness,
one notices in the snake's eyes, which look back
without paying less attention to the future,
the first coating of the opaque milky-blue
leucoma snakes to get when about to throw
their skins and become new––meanwhile continuing,
of course, to grow old––the exact bleu passé
that discolors the corneas of the blue-eyed
when they lie back at last and look for heaven,
a blurring one can see means they will never find it,
when one has lived a long time alone.

4

When one has lived a long time alone,
one holds the snake near a loudspeaker disgorging
gorgeous sound and watches him crook
his forepart into four right angles
as though trying to slow down the music
flowing through him, in order to absorb it
the milk of paradise into the flesh,
and now a glimmering appears at his mouth,
such a drop of intense fluid as, among humans,
could form after long exiting at the tip
of the the penis, and as he straightens himself out
he has the pathos one finds in the penis,
when one has loved a long time alone.

5

When one has lived a long time alone,
one can fall to poring upon a creature,
contrasting its eternity's-face to one's own
full of hours, taking note of each difference,
exaggerating it, making it everything,
until the other is utterly other, and then,
with hard effort, possibly with tongue sticking out,
going back over each one once again
and cancelling it, seeing nothing now
but likeness, until . . . half an hour later
one starts awake, taken aback at how eagerly
one swoons into the happiness of kinship,
when one has lived a long time alone.

6

When one has lived a long time alone
and listens at morning to mourning doves
sound their kyrie eleison, or the small thing
spiritualizing onto one's shoulder cry "pewit-phoebe!"
or peabody-sparrows at midday send schoolboys'
whistlings across the field, or at dusk, undamped,
unforgiving clinks, as from stonemasons' chisels,
or on trees' backs tree frogs scratch the thighs'
needfire awake, or from the frog pond pond frogs
raise their ave verum corpus—listens to those
who hop or fly call down upon us the mercy
of other tongues—one hears them as inner voices,
when one has lived a long time alone.

7

When one has lived a long time alone,
one knows only consciousness consummates,
and as the conscious one among these others
uttering compulsory cries of being here—
the least flycatcher witching up "che-bec,"
or redheaded woodpecker clanging out his
music from a metal drainpipe, or ruffed grouse
drumming "thump thrump thrump thrump-thrump-
thrump-thrump-rup-rup-rup-rup-rup-r-r-r-r-r-r"
through the treees, all of them in time's
unfolding trying to cry themselves into self-knowing—
one knows one is here to hear them into shining,
when one has lived a long time alone.

8

When one has loved a long time alone,
one likes alike the pig, who brooks no deferment
of gratification, and the porcupine, or thorned pig,
who enters the cellar but not the house itself
because of eating down the cellar stairs on the way up,
and one likes the worm, who by bunching herself together
and expanding rubs her way through the ground,
no less than the butterfly, who totters full of worry
among the day-lilies, as they darken,
and more and more one finds one likes
any other species better than one's own,
which has gone amok, making one self-estranged,
when one has lived a long time alone.

9

When one has lived a long time alone,
sour, misanthropic, one fits to one's defiance
the satanic boast—It is better to reign
in hell than to submit on earth—
and forgets one's kind, as does the snake,
who has stopped trying to escape and moves
at ease across one's body, slumping into its contours,
adopting its temperature, and abandons hope
of the sweetness of friendship or love
—before long can barely remember what they are—
and covets the stillness in organic matter,
in a self-dissolution one may not know how to halt,
when one has lived a long time alone.

10

When one has loved a long time alone,
and the hermit thrush calls and there is an answer,
and the bullfrog, head half out of water, remembers
the exact sexual cantillations of his first spring,
and the snake slides over the threshold and disappears
among the stones, one sees they all live
to mate with their kind, and one knows,
after a long time of solitude, after the many steps taken
away from one's kind, toward the kingdom of strangers,
the hard prayer inside one's own singing
is to come back, if one can, to one's own,
a world almost lost, in the exile that deepens,
when one has lived a long time alone.

11

When one has lived a long time alone,
one wants to live again among men and women,
to return to that place where one's ties with the human
broke, where the disquiet of death and now
also of history glimmers its firelight on faces,
where the gaze of the new baby looks past the gaze
of the great-granny, and where lovers speak,
on lips blowsy from kissing, that language
the same in each mouth, and like birds at daybreak
blether the song that is both earth's and heaven's,
until the sun has risen, and they stand
in a light of being united: kingdom come,
when one has lived a long time alone.

"What helps you regain your bearings and see the pathways available to you?"
-- +Justin Schwamm

Everything seemed so bleak on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.  But if there's one thing I've learned over the years, it is that seeming bleak isn't the end of the world.  *Permanent failure* and no options at all?  I find those ideas highly dubious ... except when I'm overwhelmed with fear and panic, of course!

Douglas Kiang's list, Mark Nepo's book, Mark Ensign's blog post, and some Tres Columnae stories all helped me move past the fear and panic story and back into a world where there are many pathways to choose from.  What helps you regain your bearings and see the pathways available to you?

21C Intangibles: Conversations that Mind and Matter

situational reading, situational awareness, wisdom, situational leading, enactive placemaking

Basically a 21C OODA-loop.

OODA for the 21C

21C Workflow: Power of We

What if most of the pitfalls of our 20C governance are related to how all of us still prefer to form trusting relationships?

It is not too much to say that Wall Street may be the ultimate owner of the Deep State and its strategies, if for no other reason than that it has the money to reward government operatives with a second career that is lucrative beyond the dreams of avarice — certainly beyond the dreams of a salaried government employee.

Thank you, +Phoebe Gleeson    #DeepState  ___21C Workflow: Power of We

Zen of Small Tasks: Meetings

The design synthesis of the below points are, in fact, 42.

<tilting head to the side and nodding sagely>

10 Tricks to Appear Smart During Meetings

1. Draw a Venn diagram

Getting up and drawing a Venn diagram is a great way to appear smart. It doesn’t matter if your Venn diagram is wildly inaccurate, in fact, the more inaccurate the better. Even before you’ve put that marker down, your colleagues will begin fighting about what exactly the labels should be and how big the circles should be, etc. At this point, you can slink back to your chair and go back to playing Candy Crush on your phone.

2. Translate percentage metrics into fractions
If someone says “About 25% of all users click on this button,” quickly chime in with, “So about 1 in 4,” and make a note of it. Everyone will nod their head in agreement, secretly impressed and envious of your quick math skills.

3. Encourage everyone to “take a step back”
There comes a point in most meetings where everyone is chiming in, except you. Opinions and data and milestones are being thrown around and you don’t know your CTA from your OTA. This is a great point to go, “Guys, guys, guys, can we take a step back here?” Everyone will turn their heads toward you, amazed at your ability to silence the fray. Follow it up with a quick, “What problem are we really trying to solve?” and, boom! You’ve bought yourself another hour of looking smart.

4. Nod continuously while pretending to take notes

Always bring a notepad with you. Your rejection of technology will be revered. Take notes by simply writing down one word from every sentence that you hear. Nod continuously while doing so. If someone asks you if you’re taking notes, quickly say that these are your own personal notes and that someone else should really be keeping a record of the meeting. Bravo compadre. You’ve saved your ass, and you’ve gotten out of doing any extra work. Or any work at all, if you’re truly succeeding.

5. Repeat the last thing the engineer said, but very very slowly
Make a mental note of the engineer in the room. Remember his name. He’ll be quiet throughout most of the meeting, but when his moment comes everything out of his mouth will spring from a place of unknowable brilliance. After he utters these divine words, chime in with, “Let me just repeat that,” and repeat exactly what he just said, but very, very slowly. Now, his brilliance has been transferred to you. People will look back on the meeting and mistakenly attribute the intelligent statement to you.

6. Ask “Will this scale?” no matter what it is
It’s important to find out if things will scale no matter what it is you’re discussing. No one even really knows what that means, but it’s a good catch-all question that generally applies and drives engineers nuts.

7. Pace around the room

Whenever someone gets up from the table and walks around, don’t you immediately respect them? I know I do. It takes a lot of guts but once you do it, you immediately appear smart. Fold your arms. Walk around. Go to the corner and lean against the wall. Take a deep, contemplative sigh. Trust me, everyone will be shitting their pants wondering what you’re thinking. If only they knew (bacon).

8. Ask the presenter to go back a slide
“Sorry, could you go back a slide?” They’re the seven words no presenter wants to hear. It doesn’t matter where in the presentation you shout this out, it’ll immediately make you look like you’re paying closer attention than everyone else is, because clearly they missed the thing that you’re about to brilliantly point out. Don’t have anything to point out? Just say something like, “I’m not sure what these numbers mean,” and sit back. You’ve bought yourself almost an entire meeting of appearing smart.

9. Step out for a phone call
You’re probably afraid to step out of the room because you fear people will think you aren’t making the meeting a priority. Interestingly, however, if you step out of a meeting for an “important” phone call, they’ll all realize just how busy and important you are. They’ll say, “Wow, this meeting is important, so if he has something even more important than this, well, we better not bother him.”

10. Make fun of yourself
If someone asks what you think, and you honestly didn’t hear a single word anyone said for the last hour, just say, “I honestly didn’t hear a single word anyone said for the last hour.” People love self-deprecating humor. Say things like, “Maybe we can just use the lawyers from my divorce,” or “God I wish I was dead.” They’ll laugh, value your honesty, consider contacting H.R., but most importantly, think you’re the smartest looking person in the room.

Life in the Village, part 87: Cockatiel Play Crate

Cockatiel Play Crate version 2.0

Today's project: replace the balsa chew bars and upgrade the mobile perch for our birds.

I use this mobile play station so our birds can enjoy different areas of the house. Sometimes they get to sit in the kitchen or I bring them into my office.

TK & Tootsie use this one since +Prince the Cockatiel has his own play area in my office and when he's travelling around the house - he sits on my shoulder. I'm Prince's mobile perch system.

Materials include a wooden crate I picked up at +Michaels Stores  craft supply and balsa from a kit from +Hobby Lobby. A shoelace and some woven stuff. I don't know what it's called but I got a bundle of it at the pet store so it's birdie safe.

Periodically I pull the old balsa chew strips off and replace them. The perch plank is balsa too so they can chew on that. The ladder is hardwood of some kind I picked up at the pet store.

The blue tray is a lid from a storage container. It helps catch any seed or other "organic materials" the birds may deposit around the perch.

The water bowl is just big enough for Tootsie to take a bath in. She's our only bird that does that.

Just because they have a nice perch doesn't mean they don't try to fly to other places to sit. They have learned that the playcrate is an approved perch so when I get up to shoo them off a bookshelf, etc. they return to the perch. They are always testing the limits.

21C Stewardship: Ecosystemics

Why do plants matter : Some of the reasons are obvious. Others not so much. Plants provide food, they help fix Carbon, through photosynthesis, and they create oxygen. But there is so much more they do, which is fascinating.

Plants are medicine factories : Right from the creation of complex sugars, plants also make Vitamin C, painkillers, psychotropics and even now, plants are found to synthesize new chemicals which we use in medicine.

Plants communicate : In more ways than one.... using chemical, electrical and airborne signalling, plants are able to produce defensive weapons and warning signals which can alert their neighbours.

Plants harness the power of stars : Using the Sun as an energy source, plants have used the quantum nature of light to be as efficient as possible while carrying out photosynthesis.

Plants provide strong building materials : Wood from trees has been used in building material for hundreds of years. Plants have found ways to strengthen their structure through evolution and natural selection to make some of the most durable building materials.

Earlier Posts

Plants are part of the cycle of life : They are vital parts of the Carbon cycle, the water cycle, they partner with insects and animals to spread their seeds, to provide protection and can actually create electricity. Kind of amazing.

Zen of Small Tasks: Ascend & Descend

ht +Amelia Hoskins

I’ve hiked and climbed on Mt. Rainier since I was a boy.

At first I saw it the way a boy sees things, but as I grew, I began to have a serious of lonely, mystical experiences on that mountain that greatly affected my life, and which really have never stopped.

The mountain spoke to me, and I could see faces in it, and I trembled as people 14,000 years ago who first saw it must have trembled.

I taught my own children about the spirit world on the flanks of this mountain.

And I understand why Native Americans called it “Tahoma”—the mountain that is God.

Life in the Village, part 85: 45000 years ago

In science news, the genome of a man who lived 45,000 years ago in Siberia has been successfully sequenced. There are quite a few fascinating things we can learn from this.

First, his DNA is more like that of non-Africans than that of Africans, but it is no more like Europeans than Asians: that is, he is part of the original migration out of Africa which ultimately branched off into all of the non-African branches of humanity, but before any of that branching occurred. We have here a genetic record of that first group of people.

Second, his DNA contains much longer sequences of Neanderthal DNA than that of modern non-African humans, indicating that their intermixing with the Neanderthals was much more recent. In fact, we can use this to estimate the date of this mixing as being between 50,000 and 60,000 years ago.

And third, this DNA offers good evidence that modern non-African populations are in fact descended from this group, which seems to have moved out of Africa around 60,000 years ago, interbred with the Neanderthals, and spread widely. This suggests that either these were the first humans out of Africa, or that the earlier out-of-Africa migrations (some of which are hypothesized to have happened as early as 200,000 years ago) failed, and modern humans outside of our ancestral continent all came from this last, successful, exodus.

This is the second major finding using this set of techniques for getting DNA out of very old human fossils, the first being the sequencing of a Neanderthal genome last year. Hopefully, this method will continue to prove useful in other fossils, and we'll end up with a much clearer picture of how humans evolved and spread across the world.

So why do I find this interesting? Because there were so many lives and civilizations (I use this term in the loose sense, not the technical anthropological sense) in our distant past. If there were indeed multiple out-of-Africa migrations, as there appear to have been multiple migrations into the Americas, then our society is built upon an incredibly rich set of layers of ruins of older societies still. We have a chance to imagine the worlds of people who arrived in areas genuinely never encountered by humans before; of people who arrived in areas which had been inhabited long before, but later returned to the wild; and perhaps even of people who arrived and encountered other humans, profoundly different from themselves. Our history contains all the elements of good science fiction.___Life in the Village, part 85: 45000 years ago

Our Future Societies, part 1: Departure

Hammock - Awakened, He Heard Only Silence (Departure Songs) HQ

It should always have been called departure. Project is turning something vibrantly alive in all eleven dimensions and reducing it to two, to one and a half - instead of a knowledge expedition benefiting humanity into a sorry excuse, making the poor project manager having to make excuses and say "I'm sorry, but..." almost constantly.

What is vital to bring to a departure? What needs to be left behind?

Jean-François Noubel, Collective Intelligence: Evolving The 'We' Inside The 'I'
-- +Jean-François Noubel

+John Verdon :
Collective intelligence has become the science that explores the question: how can multiple I's build smart conscious We's? As a researcher in this field, the reverse question fascinates me too: how does the collective operates in the I, exactly like in the movie The Matrix? Language, social codes, technologies, money, beliefs, food, time... all these collective forces shape the way we think, the way we see the world, how we innovate and make decisions. We call them invisible architectures. Ignoring them turns us into free as fishes in the fishbowl.

+Akira Bergman :
It is a resonance chamber;

How does the operation of the collective in the I, operate in the collective?

+John Verdon
It is a resonance chamber - an orchestra of strings ...

That's a good question - maybe it's a matter of levels -meta-levels. The collective in the I - is like the ground -enabling the figure and then when the I becomes reflective of the ground (understanding the collective 'I am because We are') the ground becomes the figure - presupposing a new form of ground ... that is I/WE .... And perhaps this is an inviting of a much more extensive ground beyond the grouping of close and loose ties - a ground of a collective audience.

The ground of imagination? :)

+Akira Bergman :
The I is also a collective; a collective of cells. They are the ground of the I, like the ground of the collective are the I's. Between these two grounds, or the limits or the boundaries, there are the modes of resonance or the imagination or the colors; countless other collectives or the groupings of the I's forming and reforming while the boundaries change and adapt in response to the internal and external conditions of the times.

Perhaps our cells will change in response to the demands put on the I's by the needs of the collective, as the collective itself changes. Perhaps the collective will also change by the demands of the I's, since reflection would have to be both ways. The I is in fact in the middle between the cells and the collective. It is the agent or the mediator.

+John Verdon :
:)  yes of course the I is a society of itself (own cells) and of a much larger microbial ecology. There is only I-in-society and society-in-I A determination of boundary be an observer or view.

We do know that a single event can affect the organism's gene expression and that change in I - can be propagated to offspring. So maybe it's a more precise description to talk about 'boundaries-for-what' versus absolute boundaries.

Gaia: Putting Ourselves Back Together

Maybe this is a parable.

Something like 25 or 30 years ago my then wife and I used to buy really big jigsaw puzzles w/o looking at the box and get the person at the counter to dump all the parts into a paper bag and leave the box at the store. That made the puzzle a lot more challenging, and a little more like life.

Another part of that parable is an observation - that almost everyone I know seems to want simple answers ... and to get them, most people try to boil complex "situations" down to a series of smaller, disconnected "problems" - which can be imagined as soluble but are of course, in most cases, simply constructs. The solution space is often constrained by these constructs, by the problem definition.

Because, I suppose, the uncertainty of reality is apparently uncomfortable.

I do not think there are going to turn out to be any simple answers to most of the questions that I consider genuinely worth asking. And recently, I have started reminding people of this - that as far as I can tell, I have never imagined and actually cannot conceive of a way that I - or anyone else - would ever actually understand how the world (read universe) works or our place in it.

Ocean temps, air currents, pH, albedo, where the rain falls, particulates, ozone holes, over-fishing, the list is of "problems" almost endless ... without even touching on the deeper problems of consciousness,  and perception, and the terrible distorting filters of belief.

That said, I really like getting sparkly new pieces of understanding to play with, like this one. Parts of a gigantic deterministic jigsaw puzzle I've got spread out on the table, that even though I know it's really just a hopeless vanity, I can't quite wean myself from trying to figure out what the picture is about.  ___Gaia: Putting Ourselves Back Together
