Mick Fealty13,632*The form’s the thing, not the play within it.* _ @114849048279122543254 explains this first in a short series of talks with @110465386078989533154 on his life's work in theatre, arts and education.__ These two shapes, symbolically, represent the essence of all human activity.   They infuse opposed ambitions at the root of the possibilities of achievement. Everyone (knowingly or unknowingly) is conditioned by such concepts as: Gods and goddesses; Apollo and Dionysos; masculine and feminine principles; individual and collective; freedom and equality; striving and sharing; sky and earth; doing and being; reason and feeling; form and content; actor and audience; etc.  Through the platform, humanity aspires to the sky, determined to take on the gods.  Through the circle, humanity relates to the earth, seeking harmonies within itself and the natural world.  The history of the platform absorbing the circle has controlled human endeavour since Mesopotamian times.  The twenty first century is its dangerous aftermath, as it seeks to create paths to the circle absorbing the platform.  Creativity is the powerless force attempting to find means to achieving that transformation  The form’s the thing, not the play within it.RG Gregory The Platform and the Circle2014-11-19 22:30:005

Mick Fealty13,632So, a new way for having serious fun in real (rather than virtual) time?  We're looking for a smart idea, a good pub and a decent pint. Oh, and some congentially smart company in a town called Oxford.  Someone (yet to be found) pitches us a smart idea on *how we might positively bridge Ireland's rich past and its uncertain future*.  It's all informal, but with a few important strictures: _One_, it's in a bar (ala cafe scientifique).  _Two_, the key speaker must have his/her pint in hand whilst speaking.  _Three_, the idea must take no more than one minute to pitch.  So a sort of Dragon's Den, but without the hideous dragons. The audience are then be free to prompt a deeper exploration of the idea. Watch this space... Slugger's prototype 'Idea and a Pint Night' in Oxford2014-03-14 19:00:002

Robert Best2,617Google+ Relevance CircleWhat people of "relevance" do we have in common? Care to share? This big shared circle contains my most "relevant" circles according to G+. It also only contains people/profiles who post publicly (Either occasionally or prolifically).Do you recognize others in the list? (I think the probability is high)As far as I know, the visual beside the "Add people" button below shows you the 8 people from this circle who are most "relevant" to you. Also, if you click that add people button, the list inside is also ordered by "relevance".Some people in this circle I know very well... others I haven't met at all (Besides interfacing with what they share publicly on G+) I'm curious, what circles do we share of high relevance? Give a few people shout outs! Let's have a random chat. You were likely notified of this post... I normally don't share to any of my specific circles, so as to avoid sending out unwanted notifications... But since I have you and your attention here... HELLO! Have we talked before? Why do you think I have you circled? What's of relevance for you? (Besides people on G+) If we do know each other... Have we been in touch lately? If not, let please catch up!2015-03-03 01:03:39455000

Sakari Maaranen3,848Here's a circle that's about Life on Earth. Add these people and organizations for everything about the #environment , #biodiversity , and the kind of #values  that can bring sustainable development. This is a broad range of people, many of whom are not necessarily activists, but scientists and experts with generally the right kind of mindset and deep knowledge of these and related issues. Some are thinkers, artists, or younger people with similar interests.Shared because we need more this kind of thinking! Feel free to re-share —  #sustainability  deserves all our attention and is needed right now.Let's make 2015 the year of positive change!Oh, and please let me know, if I'm missing some active people or important organizations. Remember that I don't care about status. It doesn't matter if you are someone new or young or already a superstar, or if your main field is something else. All it takes is some genuine drive to engage and/or follow these topics. So don't be shy! You are as welcome as anyone.2015-01-03 23:20:49115200

Daniel Mihai Popescu61,295This circle is called Survivors!  It is dedicated to all of you :)I waited to fill it a little more with some new faces :)I hope you are notified, if not, nothing changes.Just a "+1" is more than enough (and I speak here for the members) #danielmihaipopescusharedcircles   #maximumperformance  It is an homage to you, so there's no need to share it, there are no conditions. If I forgot any of you, please forgive me and tell me, instead of uncircle me without notice :)I never was in "follow me and I'll follow you back" game, not here, nor on Twitter, where people are more liberal :)I'm out of the sharing circles game, as most of you already have noticed, and it's up to anyone to do whatever he/she/it likes with that :) I thank to any of you who kept in their public shared circles the time I have been absent (there was a very motivated reason for it), and I'm absolutely passive about the people who took me out of their public circles, considering they have not an immediate benefit from that. Oh, and I'm very glad because some circle spammers have unfollowed me. I do not really deserve their company :)Have a wonderful weekend, dear friends!2014-10-18 18:08:10469383955

Dr. John Cassone12,100Dr. John's Selectgood content and engagementThese are people I follow, engage with, and suggest for my new followers who want quality people in their stream. This circle changes each time I share it based on how people are engaging and sharing content. This is not a megacircle.People are only added based on good content or my experience engaging with them.Best way to sort and manage your stream:1. add new circle2. follow it in your stream separately 3. engage with those that interest you (good content/interaction)4. cherry pick those you like and make your own circles5. let go of the rest (or put them in a circle that's dialed down on your stream)If you add too many people too often then you will not build meaningful connections which is the point here.Circle Management Basics:1. Circles control who you follow:►   I might feel like reading the news so I have a news channel circle. I don't build relationships with these pages but follow them and share content when interesting. This way I can completely control my stream based on my mood.2. Circles control who your share to: ►   Share to your interests: I like martial arts but most of my followers do not. By collecting a circle of others that like martial arts I can share specifically to those interested in this topic and not bore anyone.►  I have also collected an "inner circle" of g-peeps that I have gotten to know and share more person pics and info with.3. Control your stream flow:►   When you click on a specific circle in your stream you can adjust how much the posts from that circle appear in your "everything" stream. ►   Organize people based on flow: I have three main circles called 1, 2, and 3. I have the amount of flow dialed in priority (circle 1 is high, 2 is medium, and 3 is low). I move people between circles based on the progression of our relationship. ►   Notify circle: I have another circle with people that I don't want to miss a single post from. This circle is set to notify me whenever someone from it posts. This is a great way to focus on building a relationship with specific people.Happy Plussing :)2014-09-07 19:22:331921015

Strange days have found me

I guess these weeks I had too much of a search outside rather than within. :) Hence interesting things began to find me, wave at me, and call me back, saying Hello, we are already found, use us to step forward :)

21C Community: Generativity

The regenerative part of generativity, hinges on a shared understanding around collaborative sensemaking and a holding space for a requisite variety of diverse co-inquiries.

Obviously also a smallest necessary de-coupling from the anchoring up to 20C narratives, in favor of an anchoring down into permaculture and ecosystemics, but that will have to emerge and unfold over time.

Part of the process of cultivating community is an active inquiry into the underlying cultural narratives which we carry and embody in various ways, both as individuals and in collectives or "social organisms". The story of acquisition and consumption - of growth by whatever means - is an old, powerful, and problematic one today.

What else could take its place? How can we share and enact increasing awareness of the whole story - the complete picture of a regenerative economy which produces, exchanges, stores, and perpetuates deep wealth and value for all participants?

There are many new models emerging, many ongoing experiments. We are studying closely to identify common patterns and themes, to invite everyone to find their place on the map of the Great Transition ahead. Labels and language are only part of the story...but they can affect us greatly and spread easily.

How do you describe the #economics of your future?___21C Community: Generativity

Monday's posting goes back to the arguments over secrecy, surveillance and all that, yet again.  Holding up the banner for assertive citizenship, rather than sniveling-hiding or putting your trust in shadows. I link to Bruce Schneier's new book, that has a lovely title and is filled with interesting facts... and the same tediously wrongheaded prescription that has never worked once, in the decades it's been tried.

Creative genius isn’t the product of conforming to common standards of excellence but of finding one’s element.

I found that here: http://goo.gl/b7SaoU [Thanks +Maria Popova ]
The image source is: http://goo.gl/MfjA9n

+Teodora Petkova :
+John Kellden thanks for being the precious other. I guess this (sur)real merging, morphing, mild #collisio  is my one life, one thread(http://goo.gl/NtfPK0)

+John Kellden :
There's been a lot of boats, ships, vessels appearing in my G+ stream recently - and your post managed to get a few of my synapses in some sort of order - I always like when that happens.

+Teodora Petkova :
+John Kellden there's something in the air :) +Gina Fiedel  and me just yesterday talked about some self defragmentation going on. It's good when I hear you and her and me, reconnecting.

+John Kellden :
+Teodora Petkova you and +Gina Fiedel have for me always been good, authentic voices - which is what I hope more digital media participants will discover - and why not this year already?

+Gina Fiedel :
+Teodora Petkova and +John Kellden, the words "fathom" and "minnow" jump out at me here. It's always curious which fragments choose us.

Last night, at the end of our sangha gathering, our Roshi read us a Neruda poem during our final sit. She does that each time. Reads us a poem. To close the evening together. Why is it that she chose him last night and you chose him this morning and +Maria Popova chose him and you have never heard of each other?

Thank you, Maria.
(I subscribed to Brain Pickings.)

+John Kellden :
+Gina Fiedel  I was thinking to myself "hm, wouldn't it be lovely if Gina would tell a story, riffing on one of the words in the image?" - and then you did!

:)

My only explanation for this is - we are constellating, cocreating, connecting with, a collective intelligence field.

+David Amerland  and me did a few vulcan mind-meld posts in 2013 and 2014. If anything it, feels stronger yet "smoother" now somehow...

+Teodora Petkova :
+Gina Fiedel :) pencil got me :) +John Kellden I think we just don't have the tools to see the connections that already are there.

+John Kellden :
The fact that I can rely on you +Teodora Petkova  on +Gina Fiedel  on+David Amerland and lots of others, almost to the point of functioning as a social presencing engine, as a social exobrain almost at times - is so profound that most people are yet to even begin to fathom the implications!

+Gina Fiedel :
Oh... Now I am craving to sit down with this later and create a story with all of the words here, +John Kellden.

"Pencil" +Teodora Petkova. What color is your pencil? The outside and the inside.

The tools of our perception and intuition or the tools of technology or all

That is a powerful image +John Kellden, to think of ourselves that way. We are improvising here, allowing each other to ignite something tiny or large and being not afraid to play and respond, to meet each other in that field...

+Teodora Petkova :
+Gina Fiedel all of the tools, an amalgam of meaning, understanding and transformation.
:)

+John Kellden :
+Gina Fiedel  love that you picked up +Teodora Petkova's pencil.

I often try really hard to use an as ordinary pencil as possible, almost beige. Then it somehow sometimes comes out all rainbowy!  I really don't know how that happens. I do know that something profound happens, whenever I let go of projections and just "plunk" down stuff:

    play

+David Amerland :
+John Kellden beautiful catalysis to the conversation.

+Gina Fiedel :
I have so many pencils +John Kellden and I'm sad to say that I haven't quite found the rainbowy one yet. You are lucky in pencils. ;)

The problem might be that I always use the mechanical ones. The others sit with my art supplies that I haven't used in two years because the keyboard has me captivated and held hostage.

+John Kellden :
+Gina Fiedel  you have a faint yet shimmering and very strong rainbowy

brush

You don't always emphasize it, but it is there alright.  :)

+Gina Fiedel :
Thank you, +John Kellden. I've been feeling lately like the puppy might have hidden it out in the backyard under the loquat tree. I keep going out to look and then I can't even find the tree.

+Teodora Petkova, +John Kellden and +David Amerland.
I thought you might enjoy seeing this week's koan:

Shenshan was mending clothes with a needle and thread.
“What are you doing?” asked Dongshan
“Mending.”
“How is that?”
“One stitch is like the next,” said Shenshan.
“We’ve been traveling together for twenty years, and you still talk like that! How can this be?” exclaimed Dongshan.
“How do you mend?” asked Shenshan.
“The whole earth is spewing flames,” said Dongshan.

+Gideon Rosenblatt :
Wandering off of that link, +Teodora Petkova, I found this quote from Neruda, based on a childhood experience of his:

To feel the intimacy of brothers is a marvelous thing in life. To feel the love of people whom we love is a fire that feeds our life. But to feel the affection that comes from those whom we do not know, from those unknown to us, who are watching over our sleep and solitude, over our dangers and our weaknesses — that is something still greater and more beautiful because it widens out the boundaries of our being, and unites all living things.

That exchange brought home to me for the first time a precious idea: that all of humanity is somehow together…

+John Kellden :
<upgrading thread from great to epic>

+Susan Cox :
+Theodora Petkova
thanks for the inspiration for the yummy thread...self-fragmentation indeed

+Teodora Petkova  oops got name wrong for my comment above...sorry!!!

+Teodora Petkova :
+Gina Fiedel thank you :) [I had hard time understanding it :)]

+Gideon Rosenblatt thanks for sharing this find :) It itself is one of those marvelous thing in life.  This is why I am so in love with interconnectedness.

+Susan Cox you are welcome. Thanks for adding the "h" in my name, reminded me of its roots. :)

+Gina Fiedel :
+Teodora Petkova, that's only because it is not meant to be understood cognitively. It's meant to be kept company with in the same way you listen to jazz.

The "meaning" is yours alone and there is no sense that you need to make of it. How does reading the word "mending" feel? Does it evoke anything for you? If not, are there any other words or phrases that resonate or cause a quickening of your heart? How did it feel to read that the whole earth is spewing flames? Is it fire or is that what life is like every moment that we are paying attention? Are the flames our feelings, the ways we experience a sound or a bird leaving a tree and going to another or the cat meowing? Are those flames maybe just like the mending? And the steadiness of the mending to be found in the flames? There are no right answers.

+Teodora Petkova :
+Gina Fiedel now I got it. It's an empty frame no frame where you seek. Yes, what I found what exactly that - my first frustration with not understanding - I could almost hear the words: How can this be? and feel the feeling they were provoked by. :) Cool. I will try this again. ♗

+Gina Fiedel :
That's perfect +Teodora Petkova. Those words are yours in the koan. Words, images, sounds, phrases or even the whole thing will belong to you, be the koan for you. This time. It might be entirely different in an hour or tomorrow.

How can this be?

+Susan Cox :
+Gina Fiedel yes Gina..I completely understand at least you once played with those pencils...
Methinks this navigating the rivers of this wacky system we call life takes all the creative juice out of us (it does me at times) and instead of using ALL the pencils-tools I could I choose muted colors

+John Kellden :
Through our own perceiving things - we can near instantly shift, from

White-Gold    to

Light Blue-Black

:)

+Teodora Petkova :
+Gina Fiedel I just now saw the question: "Pencil", what color is your pencil? The outside and the inside. :)
It is graphite. From the inside it's music. :) And thanks for shaping an answer in my head.

+John Kellden :
It's one of the sublime joys of life, scribbling down a resonant note or three, and the music comes to life in ways that can be heard by others.

+Teodora Petkova :
One of the things I love in you +John Kellden is your poetic self dressed in the finest garment of logos. :) Thank you <what's the bow symbol?, as this post is upgraded from epic to omnipresent>

+John Kellden :
Thanks much +Teodora Petkova  :::bowing:::

+Rick Heil :
All signs indicate the former is indeed true, and happening at exponentially increasing rates - technology is rapidly replacing both physical and mental labor.
The later assertion is I think misplaced, for when I read Sachs and others work the point I took was that the economic output of society will continue to grow, substantially - but its the distribution of the rewards from these improvements which needs to be addressed. So Tech wont likely 'kill the economy' per se, indeed the economy as a measure of economic output and value creation will grow likely even faster than in the 20th century.
The challenge is the current model of labor based (effort) economic distribution is breaking down and we need another method to replace it.
Don't mean to sound nit-picky, rather focus on the right problem so we work on appropriate solutions.

+John Kellden :
+Rick Heil  you make good points. This also relates to +John Hagel  who is trying his best telling as many people as possible, that innovation itself needs to be reframed - both from an individual agent perspective as well as "inside" from institutions and corporations...

+frank erck :
As people have been pushed out of the labor market of the economy (in the more advanced areas of the world) and towards the service part of the economy (still, another area that is being automated), I think the question has become what is the consumer willing to pay for services?  I think in the large part the answer is not very much.

It's a rapidly changing Who moved my cheese? economy that benefits the dynamic, educated and those able/willing to take a risks.

+Gideon Rosenblatt :
I get the overall point of this piece, but I guess I would disagree with the idea that "... there will be less need for fundamentally new code to run computers and therefore less employment even for coders." or that "Once a smart machine is designed that can drive a car, this is basically a 'solved problem."

If the economy and our broader ecosystems have shown us anything, it is that change is a constant. New needs are constantly evolving, even within particular opportunity niches.

Now, that doesn't mean that coders' jobs won't be at risk too; just not for that reason. The reason, I suspect, is that software coding will itself automate.

+Clay Forsberg :
With technological change comes the necessity for societal change and individual adaptation (socially, emotionally and professionally).

The world changes, and those that don't adapt ... well we all know what happens to them.

+Susan Cox :
+John Kellden the book I shared with you recently, called TO SELL IS HUMAN, (link below)
Says this:
according to the IRS...currently more 40% of the tax returns filed are sole proprietors or small businesses...entrepreneurial-ism is at the core of how this country grew up and out of that came the middle class. We have been lulled into a "stoned on baloney and TV" mentality and all this post says is true but it isn't a matter of IF we will be replaced...we will be shifted  and are being shifted to a new approach to OUR WORK.

The other part is that we need (all over the world) to have a hiatus on making babies. There are too many humans on the planet for mother earth to sustain us...perhaps we have a global hiatus on procreating MORE humans for 15 years while we learn to feed and nurture what we have

Maybe the WORK is about elevating our consciousness and learning to truly CARE aBOUT EACH OTHER WHILE THE MACHINES DO THE "THINK ABOUT WE THOUGHT WHAT WAS OUR WORK AND GOT US HERE" we can control and guide them instead of using them to attack and kill each other.....

+Hans Youngmann :
This seems like a good place to revisit this quote:

“We should do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian Darwinian theory he must justify his right to exist. So we have inspectors of inspectors and people making instruments for inspectors to inspect inspectors. The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living.”
― Buckminster Fuller

+Hans Youngmann :
There is a great G+ community that anybody interested in the ramifications of the posted article should definitely check out. <https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/111649108498739961838>

+Xenophrenia :
we keep pretending that people should HAVE to work - at one point in our recent history we hailed this as a wonderful thing because we will now have time to devote to important things like learning, friends, family ... now you are seen as a worthless POS if you don't make someone else rich ... I wonder what happened - what propaganda have we been fed for years to make us believe we should sell our lives so others can profit?

+Clay Forsberg :
+Xenophrenia Very true. As I mentioned in my comment, with technological change must come societal change (and expectations). This is a prime example of that.

+Aaron Segal :
The sad thing about this is the amount of people who will use this kind of transformation as an excuse to justify their lack of effort.

It's the whole "there's no jobs out there mentality" that seems to run rampant nowadays.

</rant >

+Clay Forsberg :
+Aaron Segal Well said Aaron. I live in the middle of 'coal country.' All I hear is the complaining about Obama, the Democrats, environmentalists and federal government - blaming them for the decline of the coal industry. These are young people twenty years younger than I am. It's like the idea of adapting and learning a new profession is beyond their wildest imagination.

+Jack Bringloe :
+Xenophrenia I believe the propaganda, or at least the root of it, is known as the "Protestant work ethic," which despite being no longer either Protestant or particularly ethical, seems to be hard coded into American society, and thanks to American cultural imperialism, much of the rest of the world as well. To me the article actually says more about this than anything else. The author is simply incapable of imagining any economic system that does not rely on the exploitation of human labor. Extreme pessimism and fear are the inevitable outcome.

+Hans Youngmann Interesting community. I waffled for a bit, saw that it has a "skepticism" category, and joined right up!

+Aaron Segal :
+Clay Forsberg I didn't want to mention any particular generation but PIN A ROSE ON YOUR NOSE :)

It gives me a special kind if headache when someone that either doesn't understand what's going on, listens to their friends who also don't understand what's going on, or hears one small thing and makes it the focal point of their reasoning for decision making.

I dislike it in people of any age, but it seems to be a very common occurrence on the 18 - 25 year old bracket when they find out its possible a 6 figure career is not going to come knocking on their door at 3pm when they're waking up from a hard nights "not work".

There's an entire other thread out there for the topic of "I'm not working there. I've got no experience, but I'm certainly above that place"...

+Aaron Segal :
I'm going to go out on a limb here and bet there's a few of us here who could exchange stories about the kind of jobs we took when we were younger.

When I was a teenager I was lucky if a 6 figure salary was there with 2 of the zeros behind a decimal point :)

+Clay Forsberg :
+Aaron Segal I'm 56 Aaron :)

But I see your point. I don't now if it's even a generational thing. In my case it's more where I live and resistance to change of any type here, especially technological. I can't even find one public official on Twitter in the entire area of 200,000+ (Google+ would be completely alien).

You're going to have your elitist, "I'm not going to do that job" thinking for sure. And I'm sure it's prevalent with people just starting their careers, especially if they went to college. I think that's an issue of naivete as much as anything. I was probably the same way at that age :)

+Clay Forsberg :
+Aaron Segal You might be right concerning money. I was thinking more the type of job. I'm a real bad example though. I've only worked for other people maybe 10 years of my life. I'm kind of a self-employed nomad.

+Richard Harlos :
A couple of points that interest me, in no particular order:

+Hans Youngmann cited Buckminster Fuller's quote about the "specious notion that everybody has to earn a living." Bucky wrote that in 1970, and in my opinion, he was correct 45-years ago. There's a larger context to his quote that I've never seen anyone cite. His is the 3rd paragraph down the first column. This link should take you to page 30 of the March 30th, 1970 edition of New York Magazine:

http://books.google.com/books?id=cccDAAAAMBAJ&printsec=frontcover#PPA30,M1

Briefly, the author interviewed 19 panelists (separately, via telephone; 1970's and all that). He asked them questions in 3 broad areas: "Urban Planning", "Cleaning the Air", and "A New Lifestyle". The subject of the interview is the growth pains of New York City at that time, and what, if any, solutions might be considered. It's a bit long to read, but to synthesize the answers of these panelists into a larger whole is to realize that even nearly a half-century ago, there were those who anticipated the challenges of technology on first-world status quo.

Naysayers of negative technological impact (as highly disruptive) often resort to mentioning the Luddites and their presumed anti-technology perspective. "Anti-technology" isn't the most accurate frame by which to understand their objection. They, back then, as much as we today, were concerned with the larger overall impact of technology on the common person's 'context of opportunity' to remain within a status quo mindset that Fuller commented upon: this idea that everyone must earn a living is a specious notion. It's rooted, in part, in the self-interest of power, by power, to preserve it's privileges; also, in part, by the relatively simple-minded, non-rational acceptance by the labor force that 'this is just how things are'.

Having said all that, I'm inclined to agree with, and whole-heartedly embrace, the sentiment that +Clay Forsberg expressed; bold emphasis is mine:: "With technological change comes the necessity for societal change and individual adaptation (socially, emotionally and professionally).

Related to my first point of mention, I think that the necessity is what stands in contrast with -- in opposition to -- the mindset that refuses to let-go of 'business/economy as we know it'. Smart, well-intentioned people are trying very hard to imagine how to improve this presumed-necessary paradigm. I imagine that part of what fuels these folks is a genuine desire to make better those things that are cracking under the pressure of sophistication. I wonder, without any judgment, whether this desire may be filtered, by degrees, by that famous sentiment by Upton Sinclair; italic and bold emphasis is mine: "It's hard to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it."

I don't think people need to be maliciously motivated in order to want to preserve our current socio-economic paradigm. For all the articulate rhetoric that surrounds this subject, it may be helpful to realize that 'fear of change' is a very normal human response; as are many flavors of cognitive dissonance and our ability -- especially of those who are smart and articulate -- to rationalize-away that which, simply put, is what it is.

In my opinion, unless, and until, we consciously choose to let-go of the dominant paradigm of first-world being, seeing, and expectations, I think we'll forever be trying to preserve, with duct-tape and bailing wire, that which would be better to replace. Certainly it would be easier to transition into a new paradigm than it would be to abandon-in-a-day our existing way of being for a new, untried and unproven theoretical framework (heh, talk about massive cognitive dissonance and potentially violent push-back!).

There's a vicious cycle to all of this, to which I think Clay's 2nd part of his first comment alludes: "The world changes, and those that don't adapt ... well we all know what happens to them."

There's a caveat here: if those that don't adapt happen also to be concentrated in the realm of power, then they exert tremendous power and influence over whether, when, and by how much that change occurs. Subsequently, the idea that non-adapters get left behind only applies, in its simplest context, when those non-adapters also happen not to be concentrated in the realm of power. Which, I think, is unfortunate for those of us who don't occupy the realm of power and yet, who anticipate and embrace what, at least to me, seems not only an inevitability, but a desirable one as well. If we frame the willingness to change as a desire for freedom (to improve, to evolve, to actualize not only individually but collectively), and if we recognize the general opposition to this change as the antithesis of freedom, then I'll offer for consideration one of my favorite quotes (admittedly lifted from its original context because the general perspective seems universally applicable). This quote comes from Frederick Douglass' speech on West India Emancipation, c. August 3rd, 1857, delivered at Canandaigua, New York. In his closing statement, it would be better understood in the universal sense if we read "tyrants" as "the privileged class with an interest in preserving the status quo that serves them"; without further ado:

"The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. … If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."
-- Frederick Douglass

+Aaron Segal :
+Clay Forsberg sure. Sorry, I didn't mean to break it down to a specific generation.

My personal experience with it right now is in that age range. As if the issue touching home wasn't apparent :)

I agree the issue is more a societal one. The lack of effort or ability to evolve with changing times, is definitely a problem.

As was touched on... it will probably weed itself out.

One thing that's surprising is the amount of people who have such a doomsday outlook on this.

This isn't the first time in our history as humans that automation has taken jobs. And it won't be the last.

21C Stewardship: Idle No More

"We’re a land-based people, but it goes further than that. It’s a worldview. When you destroy the earth, you destroy yourself.”
-- Melina Laboucan-Massimo

For a Sustainable Future, look to the Global Indigenous Uprising

To outsiders, it might seem that Idle No More materialized spontaneously, that it sprang into being fully formed. It builds, however, on a long history of resistance to colonialism that began when Europeans first washed up on these shores. Now, armed with Twitter and Facebook, once-isolated movements from Canada to South America are exchanging knowledge, resources, and support like never before.

… “We’re a land-based people, but it goes further than that. It’s a worldview. When you destroy the earth, you destroy yourself,” says Melina Laboucan-Massimo. This is “the common thread in indigenous people all over the world.” The climate crisis is spinning out of control, and the gap between the rich and poor continues grow unabated. It’s time to let the radical uncertainty of this moment enlarge our sense of possibility.

It is this thread that goes to the heart of our global ecological crisis. While indigenous cultures differ widely from one another, what they collectively present is an alternative relationship — to the earth, to its resources, and to each other — a relationship based not on domination but on reciprocity. Any movement that seeks to create deep, lasting social change — to address not only climate change but endemic racism and social inequality — must confront our colonial identity and, by extension, this broken relationship.

What is a cinemagraph exactly?

"The cinemagraph is a medium pioneered (and named) by husband and wife team Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg in which individual instants of motion are isolated against a static image. 1897: Madagascar

One in a long series of outstanding historical vignettes from +Dirk Puehl

#onthisday  in 1897, the almost 500 years old Merina Kingdom in  Madagascar ended, when the French general Joseph Gallieni forced the last queen Ranavalona III to abdicate.

“Whether France will demand satisfaction, and show the insolent rulers of Madagascar the might of a European people, or whether she will let the opportunity pass by as she has done on former occasions, I can not take upon myself to conjecture. Time will show.“ (Ida Pfeiffer, “Trip to Madagascar”, 1862)

The sea is now the border of my rice paddy, ny ranomasina no valapariako, King Andrianampoinimerina proudly proclaimed after he had expanded his kingdom in the highlands of Madagascar across of most of the world’s fourth largest island, about half the size of the Midwestern US. Back then in 1794, Antananarivo became the island’s capital and the Merina people, of Austronesian descend and one of the at least 18 local ethnic groups, finally had carved out the top position in the struggle of factions that lasted for centuries. Interestingly enough, neither the Arabs nor, later, the Portuguese played any significant role in the local history of the rather conspicuous landmark on the trade routes of the Indian Ocean. Later colonial powers, the Dutch, French and British somehow ignored the place as well outside of a few insignificant trade posts. In the meanwhile, Andrianampoinimerina’s son and successor King Radama managed to play the French against the British during the Napoleonic Wars and it was not until the 1820s that the British put out the feelers from Mauritius, their new base in the Indian Ocean, in earnest towards the Malagasy East Coast, established a few sugar cane factories, suppressed slavery and slave trade, had the Bible translated into the local language and began to spread the Gospel. Queen Ranavalona, Radama’s wife who succeeded him in 1828, put an end to that, though.

Over the more than 30 years of her reign, Ranavalona pursued an ambiguous policy of embracing European technology, military tactics and court customs, taking up the lead from her late husband to modernise her kingdom while keeping it out of European colonial designs, on the other hand she pursued a rigorous policy of purging Madagascar of any foreign influence that ended in a veritable terror regime and the death of 20% of the island’s population, a Queen of Hearts in a grim, weird Wonderland. Her son Prince Radama, later King Radama II, had already tried to conspire with the French towards an invasion, the base of the later French claims, but Ranavalona’s successor managed to keep all of the European powers out of Madagascar with a quite sophisticated alliance policy until the Berlin Conference of 1884/85 rang in the New Imperialism period and the division of the world in earnest. President Grévy negotiated that Madagascar became part of the French sphere of interest while the first invasion began already in 1883.

In the same year, the 22-years old Ranavalona III ascended the throne of the Merina Kingdom of Madagascar. She was the niece of Radama II’s queen, had received a European education and tried, as all of her predecessors did, to play British against French interest. The Empire, however, was positively unwilling to intercede on behalf of Madagascar and anger the French into something of at least a global Cold War, let alone open conflict. Trying to turn to Bismarck, who had not the least interest in foreign adventures, and the US, who were far from ready to embark on one in the late 1880s, France openly annexed Madagascar in 1896 after another invasion that had begun a year earlier. General Joseph Gallieni forced Queen Ranavalona III to abdicate after the French Foreign Legion had quelled the last pocket of resistance on the large island and the legionnaires had died by the thousands of malaria. Ranavalona was, in modest luxury, interned in Algiers where she died in 1917 of a severe embolism at the age of 55. Madagascar remained a French colony until 1960.

Depicted below is a contemporary allegory of the French annexation of the Merina Kingdom in 1896/97 by Louis Bombled (1862 – 1927), part of a series of illustrations that covered the “Guerre à Madagascar“.

21C Literacies: Student centricity

One of the biggest take-aways from my decades in executive leadership is just how unprepared people are for the new workplace - a workplace that expects everyone to figure out their own changing roles and how best to contribute and has no patience for employees who merely sit around, wait to be told what to do, and then do as they're told and no more.

I am frightened by how badly our educational system serves children most of the time even as I am optimistic about the slow shift I am seeing to real, honest student-centered learning. This shift is profound, and generally relies on technology (because its the best way to make it affordable at scale) but is not the same as a technology implementation. In fact, implementing technology in a school without the culture shift to student centered learning is to miss an opportunity so huge that it feels like malpractice.

I wrote about this culture shift for the One to One Institute What do you think? Does technology without culture change even make sense? http://www.one-to-oneinstitute.org/…/Bjerede,Marie-_Leade…___21C Literacies: Student centricity

Visual Storytelling: Hello, we are already found

One of the things I like the most with you +Teodora Petkova is how you manage to weave images and words together in new ways.

Strange days have found me

I guess these weeks I had too much of a search outside rather than within. :) Hence interesting things began to find me, wave at me, and call me back, saying Hello, we are already found, use us to step forward :)

Play: #obscuremoviequotefriday

Bhuta:
This is so.

The rules:
One Conversation Community member at a time comes up with an #obscuremoviequote   and all others are then free to wax whimsical and perhaps even including making a guess which movie. The first one that makes a correct guess (resisting cheating with the googles is encouraged) gets to add the next quote.

+Jim Ryan is currently in the lead with ten points before we've actually started, but I'm sure we will spare no effort catching up with him. All participants are free to give points to all participants, but not to themselves.
