John Kellden31,373_"We love to figure some #impactfulness out and cocreate value."_ -- John Kellden  Come join the #fabfour   in a Hangout On Air, at 6 PM GMT+1, two hours from now. Your hosts through the Impactfulness: _"I'm out on my porch every day--sun, rain, snow--to watch the wildlife around me. Get buzzed by the hummingbirds. The robin gives me a low fly-by greeting. Hawks and the occasional eagle soar overhead. I live in a Nature Channel."_ --  @100783494986717553112  _"Probably the greatest thing I've learned thus far in my journey in Social Media is that much of what we share and to what extent it resonates with others depends on how we position ourselves and frame our content. The more we learn to be vulnerable and open to sharing our stories to frame what we share, the deeper our connections can grow. Life is too short for shallow relationships; instead, let's go deep."_ -- @101280116286631896187  _"A no-nonsense marketer who can wear many hats in the business and marketing world. Founder of the Social Media Communities on Google+ (http://smhangout.com) with over 250,000 members combined over four communities."_ --  @103008963082975341976   _"In a network, the best place to store knowledge is in other people."_ -- @101010252943098026073  Most welcome with all your impact and impactfulness questions!Conversations That Mind And Matter: Impactfulness2015-01-29 18:00:0058

Mick Fealty13,761*The form’s the thing, not the play within it.* _ @114849048279122543254 explains this first in a short series of talks with @110465386078989533154 on his life's work in theatre, arts and education.__ These two shapes, symbolically, represent the essence of all human activity.   They infuse opposed ambitions at the root of the possibilities of achievement. Everyone (knowingly or unknowingly) is conditioned by such concepts as: Gods and goddesses; Apollo and Dionysos; masculine and feminine principles; individual and collective; freedom and equality; striving and sharing; sky and earth; doing and being; reason and feeling; form and content; actor and audience; etc.  Through the platform, humanity aspires to the sky, determined to take on the gods.  Through the circle, humanity relates to the earth, seeking harmonies within itself and the natural world.  The history of the platform absorbing the circle has controlled human endeavour since Mesopotamian times.  The twenty first century is its dangerous aftermath, as it seeks to create paths to the circle absorbing the platform.  Creativity is the powerless force attempting to find means to achieving that transformation  The form’s the thing, not the play within it.RG Gregory The Platform and the Circle2014-11-19 22:30:005
John Kellden31,373In this Hangout, we're going to talk about shared understanding, social cognition, enactivity and playfulness. Not necessarily in that order. Three stages of social cognition: *1. Opaque mind: No Is Less* Solemnity. Being serious all the time, even when levity would be slightly more fun and perhaps even meaningful. *2. Absorbent mind: More Is More* Social media. If one social media post is fantastic, let's consume one gazillion? *3. Transceiving mind: Yes Is More* Social cognition. After having said no, one gazillion times, we suddenly rediscover how to say yes. Any sufficiently advanced social cognition is indistinguishable from playfulness. Context - a little something to gear up for the Hangout: _"How do people understand each other?"_ -- Hanneke De Jaegher http://hannedejaegher.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/hannedphilboekformaat.pdf *Bohemian Gravity* https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2rjbtsX7twc *Enaction* _"Enaction is the idea that organisms create their own experience through their actions."_ -- Edwin HutchinsConversation Community: Shared Understanding2014-10-13 17:30:007

Mick Fealty13,761So, a new way for having serious fun in real (rather than virtual) time?  We're looking for a smart idea, a good pub and a decent pint. Oh, and some congentially smart company in a town called Oxford.  Someone (yet to be found) pitches us a smart idea on *how we might positively bridge Ireland's rich past and its uncertain future*.  It's all informal, but with a few important strictures: _One_, it's in a bar (ala cafe scientifique).  _Two_, the key speaker must have his/her pint in hand whilst speaking.  _Three_, the idea must take no more than one minute to pitch.  So a sort of Dragon's Den, but without the hideous dragons. The audience are then be free to prompt a deeper exploration of the idea. Watch this space... Slugger's prototype 'Idea and a Pint Night' in Oxford2014-03-14 19:00:002

Robert Best2,685Google+ Relevance CircleWhat people of "relevance" do we have in common? Care to share? This big shared circle contains my most "relevant" circles according to G+. It also only contains people/profiles who post publicly (Either occasionally or prolifically).Do you recognize others in the list? (I think the probability is high)As far as I know, the visual beside the "Add people" button below shows you the 8 people from this circle who are most "relevant" to you. Also, if you click that add people button, the list inside is ordered by "relevance".Some people in this circle I know very well... others I haven't met at all (Besides interfacing with what they share publicly on G+) I'm curious, what circles do we share of high relevance? Give a few people shout outs! Let's have a random chat. You were likely notified of this post... I normally don't share to any of my specific circles, so as to avoid sending out unwanted notifications... But since I have you and your attention here... HELLO! Have we talked before? Why do you think I have you circled? What's of relevance for you? (Besides people on G+) If we do know each other... Have we been in touch lately? If not, let's please catch up!2015-03-03 01:03:39455111

Add these people and organizations for everything about the #environment , #biodiversity , and the kind of #values  that can bring sustainable development. This is a broad range of people, many of whom are not necessarily activists, but scientists and experts with generally the right kind of mindset and deep knowledge of these and related issues. Some are thinkers, artists, or younger people with similar interests.Shared because we need more this kind of thinking! Feel free to re-share —  #sustainability  deserves all our attention and is needed right now.Let's make 2015 the year of positive change!Oh, and please let me know, if I'm missing some active people or important organizations. Remember that I don't care about status. It doesn't matter if you are someone new or young or already a superstar, or if your main field is something else. Sagarmatha Café, ep 37: Yueyaquan Lake

Just when the participants in the 2015 Desert Expedition thought they were utterly lost in the desert, they managed to climb yet another dune - and there she was - Yueyaquan Lake - in all her glory, welcoming weary travellers to rest for a while...

The 21C will be all about expeditions where we explore seemingly unknown territory, helping each other take our next steps beyond the nearest edge, make sense of grids and perform graph traversal, wayfinding clear across the Waste Land.

21C Roadmapping: Social Fields

Social fields can at times appear as if mirages, when judged from a Chronos mindset. Seen through a Kairos, Scenius, Enaction lens, they're actually not mirages, not anomalies. They're portals, folds. If we reach beyond our individual ken, if we climb beyond the nexted... more »

It's not all that clear how many thoughts we have each day. Let's say we have three thousand. Let's say one thousand are all about our dreams, our visions, some which we turn into beliefs and perhaps a bit paradoxically, some of our beliefs then battling each other, our decisions making us following, not our true vision, but someone else's instead, that is more aligned with our remaining comfortable with the battle.

Real-Life Kermit the Frog Found in Costa Rica
Wildlife researcher Brian Kubicki has identified a new species of glass frog that bears a striking resemblance to everyone's favorite childhood frog. Discovered in Costa Rica, Hyalinobatrachium dianae is easily identifiable by its lime green flesh, translucent underside and large, Kermit-like eyes.

+joe breskin :
I've spent most of the past few weeks nose-to-grindstone, dealing with timelines and deadlines. This is the first thing that I have really stopped my goal-directed reading to really enjoy. It's great storytelling - thoroughly captivating!  Thanks, +John Kellden ... I needed that.

+John Kellden :
+joe breskin  you're doing great things. I'm almost - why are you here, get on with it!  :)

Seriously though, if you and others chime in here, once a month or so, that's perfect.

I only wish we would be on slightly better platforms, where we could coordinate better, share knowledge recipes, managing our own data.

One step at a time...

+joe breskin :
Due to the time demands of the ongoing projects, I am not even reliably keeping my facecrack pages up to date these days,  +John Kellden.
I am just running through the minefield of deadlines, and stopping to eat - or to play music - from time to time, and tossing stuff from my overflowing inbox like frisbees (or waffles) to a few friends who I suspect might be interested.

This particular thread caught my attention cuz it dovetails with another that is close to my heart and central to the interests a very close friend - the remains of a few non-European languages that are reflective of and even carriers of the vestiges of alternate cosmologies, alternate ways of seeing and experiencing the world, that might still offer pathways out of the current morass of paradoxical and zero-sum constructs.

This article in particular dovetails very well with another - about some fo the very same people and their almost-lost languages - that I found riveting and that I consider another essential part of the same larger discussion.
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/03/30/a-loss-for-words

+John Kellden :
An essential consideration. We've already lost a great deal of our cultural abundance, alternate songlines and luminous paths through our shared, shareable experiencing ourselves and the world.

The World After Big Data
A presentation by Dirk Helbing, via +Steven Palmer
http://goo.gl/pfjSKU

14:28 - Paradigm shift; We can see the trend towards decentralised, bottom up approaches everywhere, because it is more efficient!

24:17 - Self-organisation and self-regulation are approaches which can master the complexity of today's systems and benefit from it.

25:31 - Commoning is the suitable interaction mechanism to enable the self regulation of the economy and society.

35:21 - Reputation systems and meritocratic matching can provide the institutional frameworks to overcome 'Tragedy of the Commons'.

36:32 - Beyond bitcoin; multi-dimensional money can establish a reward system that can support self-regulation.

36:55 - The need towards distributed control and decentralised management of complex systems requires mass participation.

38:00 - We need a global effort to deal with global challenges and build a participatory framework for the emerging digital economy.

39:51 - The best way to do this is to create the 'Internet of Things' as a Citizen Web, where citizens are in control of construction and data.

40:45 - We can benefit and make a lot of money from data, but we will benefit more from turning data into information into wisdom.

"Let them believe.  And let them have a laugh at their passions.  Because what they call passion actually is not some emotional energy, but just the friction between their souls and the outside world.  And most important, let them believe in themselves.  Let them be helpless like children, because weakness is a great thing, and strength is nothing. When a tree is growing, it’s tender and pliant, but when it’s dry and hard, it dies.  Hardness and strength are death’s companions.  Pliancy and weakness are expressions of the freshness of being, because what has hardened will never win."

And the remaining third of our thoughts - a thousand thoughts aligning around our story, how we enact our path through life and how life itself enact our own becoming in return.

Once in a while, we rediscover ourselves, now and zen we re-immerse ourselves in our own essential character and our own evolutionary purpose. Trees are good when so, and forests offers temporary moments of immersing ourselves into the wholeness we perhaps never left, only our thoughts made it appear as if so.

What I think you're going to do and more importantly, how I perceive your reactions to me, and I revise my behavior based on that - and then you revise your behavior based on decisions that I've made, and so on and so forth.
We form these sort of beliefs and expectations about each other - and ultimately this process of individuals all sort of engaged in this sort of pairwise interaction, can aggregate up to form, a social norm.
The most amazing thing about these norms is that once they appear, once they become stable within a society, they appear incredibly concrete.
They seem as if they couldn't have been any other way - and they appear normative in almost a moral sense, right? They're, this is the way we should engage, this is what's polite to do.
What stands in stark contrast to that, of course, is the fact that across so many different cultures, the norms about politeness are so different. The norms about how to greet people, the norms about bargaining and fairness are really different.
This tells us there's not actually a right answer, as much as there is a social process that gives rise to it - and this is the process we want to understand.

"How do we disrupt coherence compassionately? How do we engage disruptions creatively? How do we renew coherence wisely?"
-- +Peggy Holman    http://goo.gl/Wzbi4Z

"You need seed crystals; their apparition may mark the end of pre-emergence and the onset of emergence. Seeds may actually be constituted from (liquefied) creative elements themselves. I'd say they must 1) be attractive to the most creative elements, 2) be able to react with those in a way that is a) energetically net-positive; and b) generative (creates coherent structure that expands the field of possibility)."
-- +Seb Paquet   http://goo.gl/vAK88q

"What densities, distributions, geometries push the emergence up to and beyond the tipping point? I imagine that there is a standard curve (hyperbolic perhaps?) that we can see across many different kinds of emergence (e.g., in freezing water, a stampeding herd, etc.)
Most importantly - is there a programatic way to measure where we are now and what vectors or geometries are most affordant to emergence?

Life in the Village, part 236: Kukeri

“There is plenty of genial love of Nature, but not so much of Nature herself. Her chronicles inform us when her wild animals, but not when the wild man in her, became extinct.“ (Henry David Thoreau)

The five giant, furry spirits of the forest hung on to every word the sixth one read from the battered, paperback copy of a book he held in his giant paws: “…Indeed I have not seen them roused like this for many an age. We Ents do not like being roused; and we never are roused unless it is clear to us that our trees and our lives are in great danger. That has not happened in this Forest since the wars of Sauron and the Men of the Sea. It is the orc-work, the wanton hewing – rarum – without even the bad excuse of feeding the fires, that has so angered us; and the treachery of a neighbour, who should have helped us...“ – “Well, I like to be roused”, Radko cried, “a lot!” – “I haven’t seen an orc in… ages”, Mladen tossed in, wagging his shaggy head” – “You have never seen an orc at all, you are far too young, junŭ!“ Mstivoj laughed his thundering laugh that shook the skeletal remains of the trees on the hillside, that what was left of the forest after decades of acid rain and general overexploitation. Radko sprang to his enormous hairy feet like something very angry, due to have gone extinct after the end of the last Ice Age. “You…!” he roared, clenching his fists. “Peace, brothers!” Hostisvit snapped his book shut and leaped up as well. “Take out your anger on those in the valley. No more fighting among us.” – “There goes our tradition”, Boyan grumbled, a sound distinctly like a thunderstorm raging itself out behind the next hill. “Dobre. Let’s go.” And they did. The six colossal forest spirits staggered down the hillside and on to the road leading down to the village and the old full scale plant by the river. “Ta-runa runa runa rom!” Mladen sang.

Depicted below is a group of Kukeri from Bulgaria, a variant of the “wild man” tradition, with men dressing up as an embodiment of the “Corn Spirit” to scare away evil and ensure a good harvest and general happiness, usually between New Year and Lent.

The wonderful procession of Kukeri depicted below was captured by Klearchos Kapoutsis in a place called Smitli in southwestern Bulgaria, the image was found on:

If people have a fear of flying, they are still human - and - flying might still be a good idea.

2. Movement, transition, journey

Virtuereality

Other participants employ a different, larger more nuanced set of coping heuristics than fear - they look at their experience and the whole trip with mild disbelief, they latch onto particular details eg drinking virtuereal coffee that they can experience as if pretend meaningful, as play. This sometimes run the risk of a gap, an obstacle keeping them from bringing insights from the journey, "back" to reality, since they defined their experience as play, and thus, less real, less meaningful, less useful, less applicable. Distinctions real enough inside the made-up order inside their own umwelt, their own adherence and allegiance to existing narratives.

3. Mixtapes

Enactivity: be enactive, live the questions

If participants manage to transcend first their fear, then their disbelief, they will be able to produce mixtapes.

These three concepts: "non-sense", "virtuereality", "enactivity" are near-synonymous, you can try copy the below text into a word-processor and replace all the

"non-sense" with either "virtuereality" or "embodied enactivity"

Sensemaking as adaptive coupling between living body and world-environment
http://goo.gl/rU3Ztd

Inspired  by a well-established tradition in biosemiotics (von Uexküll, 1934/1957;  Barbieri, 2006) and phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty, 1945/1962),  the enactive approach to cognition (originally introduced  to describe  the  role  of embodied action in perception, see Varela, Thompson, and Rosch, 1991) assumes that the distinctive characteristic of a cognitive system is its  continuous  engagement in  the active constitution of a meaningful world-environment (Umwelt).

The  world-environment is essentially irreducible to the natural world described by the empirical sciences (the scientist himself, while running his experiments, is a cognitive system that enacts a peculiar world-environment,  with its peculiar experimental truth, as Bitbol’s chapter,  in this  book,  reminds  us).

The  system intimately  belongs  to  its  world-environment  and always  has  a  situated,  teleologically oriented  perspective  on  it (Di  Paolo,  2005);  perspectivism,  in turn, is an ineliminable, constitutive feature of the world-environment itself.

Autonomously orienting itself towards what  is  relevant  to  its subsistence,  the  organism  actively  adjusts  the  anticipatory trajectories of its behavior to dynamically regulate its conduct in the fuzzy, risky scenarios of  real  life.

This  regulation  can  legitimately be called intelligent because it does not mechanically  react to  limited  sets  of  occurring  stimuli on the basis  of  the  statistical repetition of previous  experiences, but also flexibly  prioritizes  between novel contingencies  based on their contextual relevance for the survival of  the organism, anticipating the incoming  changes.

Various  philosophers characterized  this  pre-reflective adaptation in terms of motor-intentionality  guided by a situated normativity, rather than representations of rules and stored heuristics; see, e.g., Merleau-Ponty, 1945/1962; Kelly, 2000,  2002;  Dreyfus,  2002a;  Rietveld,  2008,  2012.

This  rich  coupling  with  the environment, at once compensatory and anticipatory, exploratory and balance-seeking, is structured in accord to a protentive/ retentive temporal dynamic  (Varela,  1999)  and  is essentially realized by the sedimentation of habitual responses that are progressively refined,  either in ontogenesis or in phylogenesis, through a history of successful interactions.

Zen of Small Tasks: Populations

Art or Science?

Are these pastel fractals the creation of an avant garde artist from some postmodern cubism movement?  You may be surprised to learn that these are high resolution images of bacterial populations growing on a petri dish!

Bacterial Art: First, the familiar E. coli bacteria were genetically marked with differently colored fluorescent proteins before mixing together on an agar plate. Each rod-shaped bacterium grows by division to give a single file of cells that is sensitive to small mechanical forces from neighboring cells pushing and jostling against each other. The line of cells buckles in a way that is predicted by fractal mathematics.  As the bacteria grow to form a confluent film, jagged boundaries emerge between differently colored clonal lines. Zooming in, the patterns are self-similar, repeating at scales from millimeters to micrometers! Mutant bacteria that form spherical cells don't produce these fractal patterns.

Form and Function: What do these beautiful images teach us? They help us understand how patterning happens on a nanoscale. In synthetic biology the goal is to engineer populations of cells to produce spatial patterns, synchronized signals and predictable behavior that can be simulated using simple, mathematically coded rules.

Life Imitates Art? Oscar Wilde reversed the conventional when he claimed that life imitates art far more than art imitates life. What do you think he meant by this? It seems to me that this bacterial fractal "art" perfectly illustrates John Berger's definition of Cubism: "The metaphorical model of Cubism is the diagram: The diagram being a visible symbolic representation of invisible processes, forces, structures."

"Will we ever have the experience of being at the center of a carefully constructed dramatic narrative?"
-- Frank Rose, interviewed by Henry Jenkins

"I'm not entirely sure, and I don't think anybody else knows either. It's too new, it's too different from anything we've ever experienced before. It's not that we haven't had participatory entertainment—we've had game shows on TV ever since the late '40s, and on radio before that. But the idea of people working together to "solve" or interpret a story at any scale beyond the water cooler is unprecedented, simply because no technology has enabled it before. Will it change storytelling? It already has. Inception, Lost—because its narrative was so convoluted, Lost implicitly demanded that people connect online to figure it out. No one ever dared do that on TV before. Does this herald some emerging facet of connected existence? Definitely. How will it change us as a society? Too early to say."

What follows is a wireframe around which human beings playing and working can cocreate scenarios and actionable knowledge recipes making for autopoietic shift.

There's three main steps, adopting such a cocreation process:

21C Transition: Onboarding
Where participants learn about what unique contribution is theirs to make, getting us from here to there, more or less in one peace.

21C Transition: Wayfinding through the Waste Land
Moving, climbing, leaving behind what no longer serves, bringing along as much baby as possible while cleansing the bathwater for the benefit of new babies.

21C Transition: Mixtapes
Knowledge recipes characterised by and producing: resonance, reach, resilience, reflexivity, resonance.

The Wireframe consists in twelve fundamental questions. How we help each other living these questions and what answers we unfold, will determine what legacy we will leave to our children and grandchildren.

1. Ecosystems
Global warming is stewardship awakening and awareness annealing.

What is a human beings relationship with its ecosystems?

What is 9 bn human beings relationship with our ecosystems?

2. Culture
Human nature and human culture and human nature.

What is humanity's relationship with its own unfolding nature?

3. Technology
Artifacts, tools, language & technology.

What is humanity's relationship with its artifacts and tools?

"...pack a potential in the way a crowbar in a willing hand envelops an energy of prying."
-- Gilles Deleuze

"...pack a potential in the way a trimtab in a willing group envelops an energy catalyzing autopoietic shift."
-- John Kellden

4. Identity
Uniqueness and belonging, embodied spirit, selfhood and social sense of self.

What is a human beings relationship with its own sense of identity and self?

5. Bricolage
Tinkering together with omniscient machines of loving kindness.

What is our relationship with art? What is our relationship with techne? What is the nature of our co-evolving relationship between inherent embodied wisdom, rules of thumb and algorithms?

6. Narrative
Although our narratives overwhelm to the point of ubiquity and invisibility, they might be merciful. We have cursed them, sometimes without cause.

What is humanity's relationship with narratives? What institutions can be redesigned to co-exist as subsets of networks?

7. Flow
Our core 21C Literacy, is imagination. If we err on the side of selforganizing, we will get there.

What is humanity's relationship with flow?

8. Transition
If you are one of those who still work inside old 20C or older, institutions - please continue for as long as possible. Then, leave.

What is a human beings relationship with institutionalization?

“Let everything that’s been planned come true.  Let them believe. Pliancy and weakness are expressions of the freshness of being, because what has hardened will never win.”
-- Stalker Monologue, Andrei Tarkovsky

9. Thrivability
Inside prefab narratives this is often referred to as health. Thrivability is health from a perspective of ecosystemics, writ inclusive.

What is a human beings relationship with her pain, with her suffering?

10. Potential
Pain is a gift to be transformed. Suffering is our collective unwillingness to value and embrace this gift.

What is humanity's relationship with its own potential, its own becoming?

“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”
-- C. G. Jung

11. Edge
All value, all potential for cocreation of value reside in edges.

What is humanity's relationship with its own intrinsic value?

What is a human beings relationship with scarcity, with abundance?

12. Generativity
A quality of a complex adaptive living system from which its participants draws an independent and interdependent ability to create, generate or produce new content, contexts, intentionality, meaning, impact and value unique to that system.
http://goo.gl/YjIXHo

What is a human beings relationship with past, present and future?

What is a human beings legacy? What is humanity's legacy?

The twelve sets of questions are designed to work as a generative sequence. This means that we can provide initial answers to the sets, from which we will be able to iterate, until our answers are good enough to be turned into thriving practice.

We have two decades to live these twelve sets of fundamental questions. First, we need to slow down ourselves so as to be able to nurture, grow and cultivate strategic reflexivity enough to be able to hold space for these questions together with others.

Then, we need to figure out how to extend the conversations, until we have connected with a sufficient number of other human beings.

Life in the Village, part 234: Longevity

Take a peek in the pantries of the world's longest-living, healthiest communities, and you'll find some variety. Bitter melons and tofu; feta cheese, lemons and herbs; chickpeas, tomatoes and wine; avocado and whole wheat bread; papayas, corn and squash.
But there's also overlap: most of these healthy centenarians avoid meat, consume lots of legumes and drink alcohol "moderately and regularly."

Gaia: Sakura, Sakura

Sakura, Sakura

For us westerners, it is only the cherry blossom time, nice to view but without any deeper meaning. For the Japanese, however, sakura is a symbol of their culture and their concept of (female) beauty and nature. So it is little wonder that sakura is of such importance that there is even a famous folk song "Sakura Sakura" dedicated to the cherry blossom:

桜 桜
野山も里も
見渡す限り
霞か雲か
朝日に匂う
桜 桜
花ざかり

桜 桜
弥生の空は
見渡す限り
霞か雲か
匂いぞ 出ずる
いざや いざや
見に行かん

(Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms,
In fields and villages
As far as you can see.
Is it a mist, or clouds?
Fragrant in the morning sun.
Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms,
Flowers in full bloom.

Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms,
Across the spring sky,
As far as you can see.
Is it a mist, or clouds?
Fragrant in the air.
Come now, come now,
Let's look, at last!)

21C
The 21C will be all about expeditions where we explore seemingly unknown territory, helping each other take our next steps beyond the nearest edge, make sense of grids and perform graph traversal, wayfinding clear across the Waste Land.

21C Roadmapping: Social Fields

Social fields can at times appear as if mirages, when judged from a Chronos mindset. Seen through a Kairos, Scenius, Enaction lens, they're actually not mirages, not anomalies. They're portals, folds. If we reach beyond our individual ken, if we climb beyond the next edge, next dune, reach beyond our ordinary spacetime - we will rediscover deeper storyweaving parts of ourselves and remember that we are already able to do things that are well beyond linear time, linear logic.

We can place, enact a portal, a pull, an attractor, at a future position along our unfolding storyline, an event that we haven't happened yet, and then we (all participants in a particular expedition) will feel, sense, experience the field, when our future, slightly more enactive selves, are happily descending and meeting us, at some opportune moment, portal, camp, cave, game table, in the middle of the journey - water of life in the midst of seeming desert.

The greeks knew this already, with mimesis and diegesis and how, in the middle of the story, the scene, the (re)enaction of the field, there emerged a moment of katharsis, of healing, of cleansing, of letting go, of pure enactive intersubjectivity.

A bit simplified - the first five steps and moves in the sequence, in the trek through the desert, up the mountain, through a set of interdependent edges - are us as if seeming separate nodes, entities, individuals, climbing "up".

The last five are us as if already enactors, climbing down for the welcome.

The sixth stage, the middle is the katharsis. The epiphany, to rediscover the well in the desert and let its water flow through you as if for the first time.

The full Generative Sequence of Enactive Intersubjectivity:

11, 1, 10, 2, 9, 3, 8, 4, 7, 5, 6

What is sometimes a bit scary for some participants, is that the 11th stage happens 0.3 seconds before stage 1. And so on, 10 before 2...
This is not all that mysterious, it's simply one of the results of human beings being able to fold time. Ie, we are curious. We worry, we anticipate, we envision, dream and hope. We move away from the known and return with gifts, with stories, with ourselves, transformed.

Good Morning Dear Coffee Aficionados

Coffee & Thoughts

Every cafe is different.

The world is abuzz over a sensational new specialty coffee drink.

An Australian ordered a flat white, but she meant our cappuccino. An Italian ordered a single long espresso, but all we do is double ristrettos, timed particularly. So to not taste terrible. A Canadian ordered a Double, Double which, when said fast mimics a full-grown turkey.

I have no idea what Starbuck's Flat White® is or what it possibly could be.

I assume when most people order Flat White, they want a latte with no foam: the second saddest drink I can make. I assume I assume correctly because most times they smile wide and tell me BEST Flat White... that I am a coffee God.

A coffee God! My head swells like an orgasm.

A cortado is equal parts espresso and steamed whole milk, we tell our customers. Really though, our cortado ends up being 2 oz espresso and 4 oz milk. I don't know why we do that.

Often, when people order a macchiato, I end up giving them equal parts espresso and milk. A macchiato, we tell our customers, is a shot of espresso with a 'little bit' of steamed milk poured in.

When someone orders a caramel macchiato, they drink primarily Starbucks, and they want a latte with caramel and vanilla.

Mostly, when people order a "tall" coffee, they mean a large, which is weird because at Starbucks (in Italy?) I know for a fact tall means small. I hear tall, I pull the small cup, and most times these North Americans say no, they meant the large.

I heard about a cafe that did away with all the names. You order an espresso with water or steamed milk, and specify the amount of milk you want. Would you like 2, 4, or 6 oz milk with that?

Then you get gorgeous coffee.

The saddest drink I can make is a Flat White w/skim milk, extra hot. The thin swill tastes like corn when scalded.

Sometimes people order a tall, and kinda stammer like it's a different language they gotta get right, so not to look like a dork. Sometimes people say cappusseeno (it's capu[chee]no.) We have a drink called the nutellacino. One man called it a nut-seeno. Then he looked around, brow furrowed, rotated a shoulder.

I saw a poster explaining a flat white. Said the flat white is like a cappuccino but with velvety microfoam instead of big bubbles. Haha, milk foam should never have big bubbles. Big bubbles have no taste. It's wrong, shameful even, to serve such a thing.

People are confused, but names carry the heft of sound, culture.

But none of these names mean anything.

I heard, technically, a cortado is actually equal parts espresso and steamed half and half.

Fragmentation is an issue. Coffee culture, no different than real culture.

Crapocheeso? Cuppachichi? Captachano?

And yet so far removed.

Starbucks says a flat white is, "A product of simplicity, crafted into artistry, our baristas know that balance is key to the perfect Flat White. An extra ristretto shot ensures that it’s bolder than a latte, yet steamed milk keeps it smoother than an americano. But perfection doesn't end there—the technique for steaming and pouring the milk requires close attention as well. Steamed milk is folded into itself creating a velvety microfoam that gives the Flat White its silky texture and signature white dot."

All I can hear is shots fired.

Life in the Village, part 228: Road to Damascus

#onthisday  in 1807, the English socialite, Romantic adventuress and traveller Jane Elizabeth Digby el Mezrab, Lady Ellenborough, was born in Forston House, Dorset.

“If I had neither mirror nor memory, I would think I was fifteen years old." (Jane Digby)

King Ludwig of Bavaria had several notable affairs with several remarkable adventuresses during his reign and the last one, Lola Montez, née Betsy Gilbert from Sligo, proved to be his downfall in 1848, when the good people of Munich revolted against the newly-created Countess of Landsfeld’s rather daft political ambitions and her intolerable favouritism and overthrew Ludwig as well at one go. His affairs remained in public memory, though, and under this legacy, Richard Wagner, close associate of the fairytale-castle-building Ludwig II, Ludwig’s son and successor’s, earned himself the nickname “Lola”. Another son of Ludwig’s, Otto, King of Greece, inherited a no less remarkable legacy, his father’s former mistress from 1831, Jane Digby, Lady Ellenborough, and what sounds like the climax of a re-enactment of the Freudian primal scene was really just a part of Jane’s rather colourful life. After a few weeks, she left King Otto for a Greek brigand chief, became his robber queen, lived with him and his Klephts in caves, rode and hunted with him and walked out on the fellow in turn when he became unfaithful. And such was the life of Jane Digby, who was a companion, wife and mother of British, Bavarian and Austrian nobility, duels were fought on her behalf, dramas enacted and what not, while she did just one thing, remaining true to herself and hang the consequences until she discovered her interest in archaeology, went to Syria at the age of 42 and began to establish a stable relationship, for the first time in her life, with a Syrian Bedu warlord, 20 years her junior.

The comparison with the other desert-loving English lady, Hester Stanhope, “Star of the Morning” and “New Queen Zenobia” is obvious. Lady Hester had died, quite impoverished, in her derelict manor near Beirut 10 years before Jane Digby came to Damascus. And she promptly set forth to the ruins of Palmyra, Queen Zenobia’s old capital and one of Hester Stanhope’s favourite haunts, in something of a memorial tour of her famous predecessor. Jane met her future fourth husband Mijwal al-Musrab while she was about to buy a horse for her journey into the desert. The two fell in love, married and Jane became Jane Elizabeth Digby el Mezrab, locally known as Shaikhah Umm al-Laban, the Mother of Milk, because of her light complexion. The couple lived half of the following 28 years in a villa in Damascus and the other half as Bedu out in the desert and in contrast to the “New Queen Zenobia”, Jane never had any misguided ambitions of political grandeur and being a new messiah, but was content to live her adventurous life with her husband as it was. When she died at the age of 74, Mijwal, mad with grief, was about to make a scene when he ran away wailing from her funeral at the Protestant Cemetery of Damascus. However, he returned with her favourite horse to witness the funeral, a befitting end of a woman who had lived her scintillating life to the fullest.

Depicted below is Jane Digby’s portrait painted during her time in Munich as King Ludwig’s maîtresse by Karl Joseph Stieler (1781 – 1858) as part of the king’s “Schönheitsgallerie”, a gallery of 36 portraits of Munich’s most beautiful women (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_Beauties) in 1831
