Gailen Mapes62,568Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera  A-C - 14 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to April 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting March 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-04-14 10:20:051978410CC G+

Peter From71,921The NEW Pixativity Pro/Amateur Photographer's Circle | APRIL 2014 | READ THE WHOLE POST BEFORE ASKING FOR INCLUSIONThe first PAC (March 2014) was a great success and I want to thank everybody who participated in it! Like my old APC Circles, this new April PAC is full of great photographers! I have checked EVERY SINGLE ONE of them and guarantee that your feed will flood from quality images when you add this circle. How To Qualify To Future PAC CirclesIf you're a professional or an amateur photographer mainly sharing your own original work in your feed, then you're eligible to ask for inclusion in the May PAC.The difference between this circle and the old APC is that I now will be giving away FREE accounts to the Pixativity Photographer's Directory every time I share this circle. I will pick three photographer's from the circle and add them to the directory while I compile the circle (you will be notified). (For those of you not remembering the _APC, it's one of my most shared and popular circles since I started here on Google+ a couple of years ago. Many participants have received thousands of new followers and some of the people I helped promote in the APC now boast more followers than I do! I love that! It speaks for the positiveness and quality of this circle. The PAC will be of the same high quality!_The GuidelinesYes, there are rules and guidelines. :) If you want to participate in the PAC you need to do the following:1) Plus and comment this post to show that you want to participate (you must do that here on the original post). Please state what kind of photography you're into in your comment. You also may tag friends of yours to help promote them as well. I'll add them too if they meet these guidelines. Tagging friends increases your chances of being added.2) Reshare this post to help promote your fellow G-plussers. That way YOU will receive more attention once the circle is released. If you do not reshare, I probably won't add you to the circle since this is a joint effort to promote good photographers. YOU deserve to be reshared, right? So does your fellow G-plussers.The post must be reshared in your personal feed and publicly.Pages will NOT be accepted into the circle.3) Please do NOT add external or internal links to albums, websites, blogs etc. in the comments. This post is neither the right place for advertisement nor for spam. Thanks.I will check your feed anyway, be sure of that. :)4) Premium Members of the Pixativity Photographer's Directory website are automatically included in the circle. Still members should reshare this post and  let me know that you did so in the comments.(How to obtain a Premium account to the PPD can be found here: http://maps.pixativity.com/join/).Please NoteIf I do NOT add you to the circle there's always a reason for that. 1) You do not mainly share your own original work in your feed, 2) You are a web marketeer, SEO-specialist etc. or 3) I did not like the mix of your feed (yeah, I know, it's a very subjective thing to create circles like this) or 4) I just missed your comment of some reason – mistakes happen, I am only human.Another thing: I cannot add everybody in one circle but be assured that I check ALL feeds and you are welcome to ask for inclusion in the next edition of the PAC.Release DateThe next circle will be released in May. Up in the sky
Giraffe is the tallest animal in the world and the biggest ruminant, reaching up to 5–6 m (16–20 ft) height and has an average weight of 1,600 kg (3,500 lb) for males and 830 kg (1,830 lb) for females. The giraffe has an extremely elongated neck, which can be up to 2 m long. There is the "competing browsers hypothesis" which was originally suggested by Charles Darwin and it suggests that competitive pressure from smaller browsers, such as kudu, steenbok and impala, encouraged the elongation of the neck, as it enabled giraffes to reach food that competitors could not. There is also research suggesting that browsing competition is intense at lower levels, and giraffes feed more efficiently (gaining more leaf biomass with each mouthful) high in the canopy.

National Library of Greece
The National Library of Greece (Greek: Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη) was designed in 1888 by the Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen and its construction supervised by Ernst Ziller, as part of his famous Trilogy of neo-classical buildings, one of the major landmarks of Athens, including the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University. The National Library of Greece was founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state of independent Greece (1827–33) and the founder of the modern Greek State.

Mother care
One bright summer morning we were on safari in Etosha National Park in northern Namibia, when suddenly a large herd of zebras blocked our way, so we stopped our vehicle. We looked closer, and what a wonderful surprise, there were a lot of lovely young foals and their mares in the herd.

Female zebras mature earlier than the males, and a mare may have her first foal by the age of three. Males are not able to breed until the age of five or six. Mares may give birth to one foal every twelve months. She nurses the foal for up to a year. Like horses, zebras are able to stand, walk and suckle shortly after they are born. A zebra foal is brown and white instead of black and white at birth.

The good, the bad and the ugly
A full grown wildebeest can be 4 ft 2 in (1.27 m) to 4 ft 10 in (1.47 m) at the shoulder and weigh 265–600 lb (120–270 kg). They inhabit the plains and open woodlands of Africa, especially the Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania, Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya and Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia. Wildebeest can live more than 40 years, though their average lifespan is around 20 years. The wildebeest have a broad muzzle shaped like a lawnmower which helps it with eating short grass.

Big Ben
Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower, officially named Elizabeth Tower. The tower was completed in 1858 and has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city. It celebrated its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009.
The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower) named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee year – was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834. The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style.

Himba woman
The Himba people are an ethnic group of about 20,000 to 50,000 people living in northern Namibia, in the Kaokoland region. They are a nomadic, pastoral people and they breed cattle and goats. They wear little clothing, but the women are famous for covering themselves with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre, possibly to protect themselves from the sun. The mixture gives their skins a reddish tinge. This symbolizes earth’s rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life, and is consistent with the Himba ideal of beauty.

Life in the desert
Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes as far as the eye can see, reputed to be the highest in the world, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia
The area is characterized by high sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange colour, a consequence of a high percentage of iron in the sand and consequent oxidation processes. The oldest dunes are those of a more intense reddish colour. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 200 metres, the highest being the one nicknamed Big Daddy, about 380 metres high.
Fauna in the Sossusvlei area is relatively rich. It mostly comprises small animals that can survive with little water, including a number of arthropods, small reptiles and small mammalians such as rodents or jackals; bigger animals include antelopes... more »

Early morning frost
Zagoria (or Zagorochoria or Zagorohoria), is a region and a municipality in the Pindus mountains in Epirus, in northwestern Greece. It is an area of great natural beauty, with striking geology and two national parks, one including the river Aoos and the Vikos Gorge, the other around Valia Kalda, to the east of the imposing snow-capped Mt Tymphe. The 45 or so villages of Zagori were interconnected by mountain roads and traditional arched stone bridges until modern roads were opened in the 1950s. The stone arched bridges were built by benefactions from expatriate merchants in the 18th century and replaced older wooden bridges.

Just like a pussycat
The mane of the adult male lion, unique among cats, is one of the most distinctive characteristics of the species. It makes the lion appear larger, providing an excellent intimidation display; this aids the lion during confrontations with other lions and with the species’ chief competitor in Africa, the spotted hyena. The presence, absence, color, and size of the mane is associated with genetic precondition, sexual maturity, climate, and testosterone production; the rule of thumb is the darker and fuller the mane, the healthier the lion. Sexual selection of mates by lionesses favors males with the densest, darkest mane.

The lion is a very vulnerable species, having seen a major population decline in its African range of 30–50% per two decades during the second half of the 20th century.

Switching boats
- On a great sunny day we were in Maun, the main city in Okavango Delta Botswana and we wanted to have a "mokoro safari". So we got on board on an aluminum motor-boat to take us to the place. After a few minutes we arrived to this meeting point here, where everybody was switching boats and getting in wooden mokoros to start the safari.

Mokoro safaris are a popular way for tourists to visit the delta, much of which is in national parks, but the boats are still a practical means of transport for residents to move around the swamp. The boats are very vulnerable to attack by hippopotamus, which can overturn them with ease. Hippopotamus are reputed to have developed this behaviour after the use of mokoros and other boats for hunting.

I am watching you!
- During a very hot Indian summer day, this female tiger was in a pond with another female same age (probably sisters) having a bath, the temperature was about 42-44 degrees Celsius. All this was happening just 5-6 meters away from the open jeep on which I was standing up shooting with a 80-400 mm lens at 370 mm. This is not a cropped image.

The Bengal tiger is the most numerous tiger subspecies. Its populations have been estimated at 1,706–1,909 in India, 440 in Bangladesh, 163–253 in Nepal and 67–81 in Bhutan. Since 2010, it has been classified as an endangered species by the IUCN. The total population is estimated at fewer than 2,500 individuals with a decreasing trend.

Clouds over Dimitsana village
Dimitsana village is built on a mountain slope above the river Lousios, at about 950 m elevation on the  mountain range of Taygetus. The village has a school, a historical library, several churches, a post office, an open air water-power museum, an open amphitheater, hotels and a square.
During the Greek independence war of 1821, much of the library was destroyed, as the Greeks needed the paper to make "fysekia" at the 14 gunpowder mills of Dimitsana, who worked day and night supplying the freedom fighters. For this reason Dimitsana called "powder keg of the nation". After 1960 most of the inhabitants, migrated and settled in America, Australia and elsewhere.

Mother care
Female Savanna Baboon typically give birth, usually to a single infant, after a six-month gestation. The young baboon weighs approximately 400 gr and has a black epidermis when born. The females tend to be the primary caretaker of the young, although several females will share the duties for all of their offspring.
After about one year, the young animals are weaned. They reach sexual maturity in five to eight years. Baboon males leave their birth group, usually before they reach sexual maturity, whereas females are philopatric and stay in the same group their whole lives.

Asking for directions
- Midday at Sesfontein settlement, in Northwest Namibia, we stopped to ask for some road directions these two young himba boys. They were very helpful indeed, as you can see in the picture.

The Himba people are an ethnic group of about 20,000 to 50,000 people living in northern Namibia, in the Kaokoland region. They are a nomadic, pastoral people and they breed cattle and goats. Because of the harsh desert climate in the region where they live and their seclusion from outside influences, the Himba have managed to maintain much of their traditional lifestyle.

Lazy sunny afternoon
-Mares and their foals grazing by the lake Kerkini. The human intervention usually retracts or takes negative action against the natural processes, Kerkini lake is a rare example, where the gentle human handling had the exact opposite result.

Lake Kerkini (Greek: Λίμνη Κερκίνη), in Greece, is an artificial reservoir that was created in 1932, and then redeveloped in 1980, on the site of what was previously an extremely extensive marshland. The area surrounding Lake Kerkini has been declared a National Nature Reserve and is protected by the International RAMSAR Convention. The lake is a paradise for bird watchers and nature photographers and presents thousands of birds (227 species), riverside forests, extended areas covered with water lilies and a great fish variety.

Kastraki village, Meteora
The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα)  is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The nearest town is Kalambaka and just under these huge rock pillars is Kastraki village.
Studies suggest that the pinnacles were formed about 60 million years ago during the Paleogene Period. Continuous weathering by water, wind and extremes of temperature turned them into huge rock pillars, marked by horizontal lines which geologists maintain were made by the waters of a prehistoric sea.

Machu Picchu Archaeological site in Peru
A famous UNESCO World Heritage Site located 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. The Incas built the estate around 1450, but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was unknown to the outside world before being brought to international attention in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham.
Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of what the structures originally looked like. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored. The restoration work continues to this day.
Often referred to as «The Lost City of the Incas», it is perhaps the most familiar icono... more »

Mature male Warthog
The warthog or common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a wild member of the pig family (Suidae) found in grassland, savanna, and woodland in sub-Saharan Africa. A warthog is identifiable by the two pairs of tusks protruding from the mouth and curving upwards. The lower pair, which is far shorter than the upper pair, becomes razor sharp by rubbing against the upper pair every time the mouth is opened and closed. The upper canine teeth can grow to 25.5 cm (10.0 in) long.
The tusks are used for digging, for combat with other hogs, and in defense against predators – the lower set can inflict severe wounds. Although capable of fighting (males aggressively fight each other during mating season) the warthog's primary defense is to flee by means of fast sprinting. The warthog's main predators are humans, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas. On occasion,warth... more »

Etosha National Park
- It's not easy to spot the Giraffe (the tallest animal in the world, reaching up to 5.5 m. height and the biggest ruminant up to 1,900 kg weight) inside that vast savanna area of Etosha NP.

Etosha National Park is in northwestern Namibia. The park was proclaimed a game reserve on March 22, 1907 and spans an area of 22,270 square kilometres (8,600 sq mi) and gets its name from the large Etosha pan which is almost entirely within the park. The park, which is famous for it's wildlife, is home to 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species and 1 species of fish (up to 49 species of fish during floods), including several threatened and endangered species such as the black rhinoceros.

Tibetan girl
We stayed for two nights in Zhangmu village near the Nepal-China (Tibet) borders having very bad weather. Then on the third day, we heard that the passages were open and we should try to go further to our journey to Tibet via Friendship Highway to the great city of Lhasa. So we gathered our gear and got on a 4WD with a chinese driver. After a few kilometers we discovered that the road was closed once again, like it was two days ago. We got out of the car to take some pictures in the snow, on an altitude over 3,000m / 9,850ft and then we turned all the way back to Nepal borders. Maybe next time...

Zhangmu (Nepali: Khasa), is a customs town and port of entry located in Nyalam County on the Nepal-China border, just uphill and across the Bhote Koshi River from the Nepalese town of Kodari. At 2300 meters above sea level, Zhangmu has mild and humid subtropical climate,... more »

Elephant country
The Chobe National Park is widely known for its spectacular elephant population: It contains an estimated 50,000 elephants, perhaps the highest elephant concentration of Africa, and part of the largest continuous surviving elephant population. The elephant population seems to have solidly built up since 1990, from a few thousand. Elephants living here are Kalahari elephants, the largest in size of all known elephant populations. They are characterized by rather brittle ivory and short tusks, perhaps due to calcium deficiency in the soils.

Poaching significantly reduced the population of Loxodonta in certain regions of Africa during the 20th century. In the ten years preceding an international ban in the trade in ivory in 1990 the African elephant population was more than halved from 1.3 million to around 600,000. The African elephant nominally has governmental... more »

The fortified Byzantine town of Mystras
Mystras is one of the last great settlements of the Byzantine Empire. Situated on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta, it served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering.
The last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos, was despot at Mystras before he came to the throne. Demetrius Palaeologus the last despot of Morea, surrendered the city to the Ottoman emperor Mehmed II in 1460, only seven years after Constantinople has fallen and the last Byzantine emperor was dead.
The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. In the 1830s, it was abandoned and the new town of Sparta was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east.

Bateleur Eagle
The Bateleur eagle is a common resident species of the open savanna country in Sub-Saharan Africa, though it also occurs in south-west Arabia. It nests in trees, laying a single egg which is incubated by the female for 42 days. Bateleurs pair for life, and will use the same nest for a number of years. "Bateleur" is French for "tight-rope walker". This name implies the bird’s characteristic habit of rocking its wings from side to side when gliding, as if catching its balance.
In 2009, the Bateleur was placed in the Near-Threatened IUCN Red List Category due to loss of habitat, pesticides, capture for international trade and nest disturbance.[9] Decline of the species is suspected to have been moderately rapid over the past three generations.

Like an old postcard
Titicaca  is a lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is the largest lake in South America and it is the highest (3,812 m / 12,507 ft) navigable lake in the world. The Uros Islands are vast floating artificial islands made from the totora reeds. There are more than 40 communities on these islands, where the Uru people live in reed huts and they fish and travel in boats woven from reeds. The Uros use bundles of dried totora reeds to make reed boats (balsas mats), and to make the islands themselves. The larger islands house about ten families, while smaller ones, only about thirty meters wide, house only two or three.
The islets are made of totora reeds, which grow in the lake. The dense roots that the plants develop and interweave form a natural layer called Khili (about one to two meters thick) that support the... more »

View of Messara Plain from the hill of Phaestus in Crete
The Messara Plain (Greek: Μεσσαρά) is a very fertile plain in southern Crete, stretching about 50 km west-to-east and 7 km north-to-south, making it the largest plain in Crete.
On a hill at its west end are the ruins of Phaestus archaeological site, near the middle are the ruins of the ancient city of Gortys. Clays from Messara have been found to be the source of significant amounts of Minoan pottery.
Nowadays, olive trees, vineyards and horticultural crops are grown here. Part of the products grown here are placed on the domestic market, but also a substantial part of the produced olive oil here is exported to European markets. The Messara Plain is also home to the indigenous Messara horse.

Vathia (Greek: Βάθεια) is a village in Laconia, Greece, on the Mani Peninsula. It is one of the most characteristic villages of Mani and it is famous for its grand towers (pyrgoi). It stands proudly, built on a peak of a hill, full of two and three storey impressive towers that along with the other stone buildings of the village, it creates a real fortress. It was mainly built during the 18th century, and it met its greatest prosperity in the 19th century.
In recent years and after Greek National Tourist Organization's intervention, most of the towers have been restored and converted into beautiful traditional inns. Now Vathia is a tourist attraction in spring because of its wild flowers that cover the nearby hills and its breathtaking views.

Zebra foal in side-lighting
Like horses, zebras are able to stand, walk and suckle shortly after they are born. Plains zebra foals are protected by their mother as well as the head stallion and the other mares in their group. Even with parental protection, up to 50% of zebra foals are taken by predation, disease, and starvation each year.
Like all zebras, they are boldly striped in black and white, and no two individuals look exactly alike. They also have black or dark muzzles. A zebra foal is brown and white instead of black and white at birth. All have vertical stripes on the forepart of the body, which tend towards the horizontal on the hindquarters.

Indian snake charmer
Snake charming is the practice of pretending to hypnotise a snake by playing an instrument called pungi. A typical performance may also include handling the snakes or performing other seemingly dangerous acts, as well as other street performance staples, like juggling and sleight of hand. The practice is most common in India, though other Asian nations such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia are also home to performers, as are the North African countries of Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
Many snake charmers live a wandering existence, visiting towns and villages on market days and during festivals. With a few rare exceptions, however, they typically make every effort to keep themselves from harm's way. For one, the charmer typically sits out of biting range, and his animal is sluggish and reluctant to attack anyway. More drastic... more »

The Eurasian Spoonbill or Common Spoonbill is a Palearctic species, breeding from the United Kingdom and Spain in the west through to Japan, and also in North Africa. In Europe, only The Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Hungary and Greece have sizeable populations. Most birds migrate to the tropics in winter, with European breeders mainly going to Africa, but a few remaining in mild winter areas of western Europe south to the United Kingdom.
Eurasian Spoonbills show a preference for extensive shallow, wetlands with muddy, clay or fine sandy beds. They may inhabit any type of marsh, river, lake, flooded area and mangrove swamp, whether fresh, brackish or saline, but especially those with islands for nesting or dense emergent vegetation (e.g. reedbeds) and scattered trees or srubs. I am feeling particularly inspired about wildlife photographer this morning and so, I put the below quote together to encourage and inspire wildlife photographers around the world. Please share this quote on your walls and if you know a wildlife photographer (whether professional or amateur) post it on their wall or send it to them anyway you can...

The Role of a Wildlife Photographer:

'The conservation value of a wildlife photograph might at first glance be subtle, but remember it is human nature to protect that which we love and appreciate. It is in our DNA, we do not need to be taught this. Every time a special wildlife photo is shared, an appreciation and love for wildlife increases. Eventually it will grow... more »

Wood fern unrolling young fronds
Dryopteris, commonly called wood ferns, male ferns, and buckler ferns, is a genus of about 250 species of ferns with distribution in the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Many of the species have stout, slowly creeping rootstocks that form a crown, with a vase-like ring of fronds.
Dirfi (Greek: Δίρφη) is the highest mountain (alt. 1,743 m.) in  Evia or Euboea, very close to the sea and 35 kilometres from Chalkida, the island's capital. Phaistos archaeological site in Crete
Phaistos was one of the major cities of Minoan civilization along with Knossos, Malia and Kato Zakro. The Minoan civilization was a Bronze Age civilization that arose on the island of Crete and flourished from approximately the 27th century BC to the 15th century BC. It was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the work of British archaeologist Arthur Evans. Will Durant referred to it as "the first link in the European chain". Minoan palaces (anaktora), like the one in Phaistos, are the best known building types to have been excavated on the island. They are monumental buildings serving administrative purposes, as evidenced by the large archives unearthed by archaeologists.
The name of Phaistos is substantiated by the coins of the classical city. They display motifs such as Europa sitting on a bull, Talos with... more »
