Lotus Carroll1,774,290This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Multiplicity. What this means is create a self portrait where you appear in the image multiple times (2 or more, your choice). Get creative and think up an interesting scene you can use this effect on and then make your image. Here is where you enter your ONE Multiplicity Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* There are several different ways to go about achieving this effect. In camera, you can use a long exposure and move around. Alternately, you can use post processing to create multiples in an image. Photoshop is most widely considered in this type of editing, but other programs can also be used to achieve effect, such as Gimp. For those with no experience with creating "multiplicity" images with post processing, here are a few resources to help you get started: Photoshop Multiplicity Tutorial Videos: http://goo.gl/cyTpyZ Gimp Multiplicity Tutorial Videos: http://goo.gl/hChZ0Q Examples from Flickr: http://goo.gl/os2P65 Other Examples: http://goo.gl/DqlDtR Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. Daria Musk3,674,327*Expand to read the story and learn how to join live!* Three years ago to the day, I stood in front of my computer - a guitar in my hands, songs in my heart, fingers trembling - about to press a button that said, "Hangout". I was still waterlogged with rainy nights of lugging my amps into tiny clubs and tears from the not-knowing-what-would-happen to my dreams. That night, when I hit "Hangout" you saved my dreams, you saved me. Your faces popped in. We sang all night. Six hours later my heart was six million times bigger and I would never be the same. Every year I want to celebrate that day. I want to thank you face to face. I want to meet back at our special place and sing your praises. It's time for Hangoutiversary III.  *PLEASE, BE CELEBRATED* So please, meet me on July 16th. Right here, inside the place where we had our virtual first date. Comment back and let me know that you're planning to come, I will organize special circles of you all, so we can rotate the 10 seats and meet and meet and meet again. I'll sing our songs of celebration. I'll sing new songs of adoration, to you and this crazy world that gives us a chance just when we think maybe it can't. Come with your hopes and your dreams to be amplified and your updates and your friends and families and fantasies. Let's sing 'til our throats go weak and dance in front of computer screens, like the silly beautiful people we know ourselves to be.   *HOW TO HANG* In case you're new or rusty all you have to do to join this Hangout is:   ✪ RSVP a big fat *yes* here. ✪ On Wednesday, July 16th come back to this page when the Hangout starts (6PM Eastern US Time). ✪ You can watch or click "join" to on my page @100974258168375166691! ✪ Don't for get to comment and let me know if you want to join and around what time. I'll be sure to circle you and invite you when you're web-camera-ready! ✪ Come with song requests, stories and even a "dream to amplify". The theme of this hangout is #amplifyyourdreams  cause that's what you guys did for me. You turnt it up to 11! *SRSLY, MESSAGE ME* Send me a private message or chat or comment to me here if you'd like to arrange a special invite or if you're new and want to join the family and need some tips for getting in. I think I'm going to make invite circles for each half hour, so let me know when you want to join. Everyone's invited. It's really the greatest possible gift, just to let me sing for you and get to know you again and again and again.  *SPREAD THE LOVE* Share this invite too. Let's grow the family. Any friend of yours is a friend of mine and deserves some showcased virtual face-to-face time. *XO, Daria* PS. *CONNECTED BY* This concert celebration is being supported by our new friends at CO-OP Connected Credit Unions. ePublish Unum - Education for Authors157,818We admit it--sometimes we focused too much on the latter end of the digital publishing lifecycle. But for many should-be authors, getting past the "why would anyone care what I have to write about?" is a giant hurdle. If you're sitting there filled with self-doubt, you certainly aren't going to start writing, let alone get published. On the next Books & Beer Hangout, +Michael O'Reilly joins us for a lively conversation about this very topic. We'll deal with fears, rewards, tests and motivation to move you past that point and get you started on the path to being a published author. And remember, you can join in for the B&B Hangover at :15 after the hour to get your questions answered live! But you have to be in our circles to get the invite, so do so now! Books & Beer is co-produced and co-hosted by +Evo Terra & +Jeff Moriarty, publishing pioneers and craft beer enthusiasts. We Hangout every Monday, at 6:00 pm PT/9:00 pm ET as a Google Hangout On Air. Lotus Carroll1,774,290Hello Austin Area Photographers! Time for us to celebrate the time of year by getting together for a photo walk at Austin's Trail of Lights. It hasn't been opened in a couple of years, so you don't want to miss it this year. Come out and join @107430862196617669986 and myself, @102476152658204495450, for this free event no matter what your skill level or gear - bring your phone, point and shoot, or DSLR. This is a Family Friendly event - bring the kids if you want! Let's meet at 7:30 by the Big Tree at Zilker Park. Meet on the outside of the circle of lights created by the tree, right by the Kettle Corn Stand. We'll start walking towards the trail at 7:50. Visit http://austintrailoflights.org for more information about The Trail of Lights, including parking details. Please be aware that traffic is heavy and parking can take up to 45 minutes (and costs $10). Give yourself plenty of time to get there! We'll shoot through the Trail, enjoying the lights and getting to connect with one another. It will likely take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. It is very crowded, so we might lose one another a little bit.  Afterwards, we'll go to Shady Grove (their Google Local page is here: https://plus.google.com/110080551668516941351/about) to have food and drinks, for those interested. *We can all post our photos right to this Event to share after the walk.* I'm looking forward to seeing all of you! :) PS: Please make sure you review http://www.austintrailoflights.org/index.php/prohibited-items/ for a list of Prohibited Items. Tragedy...

I have some really sad news to report. Sometime yesterday afternoon or evening, our owl house with the baby owls was invaded by a bee swarm. While I guess it's not impossible that the owls got out, our assumption is that the babies were killed and we have no way of knowing whether there was a parent in there with them as well.

Everything in nature works in balance, and different creatures compete for similar habitat and resources, but it's still sad when some of those creatures you've been watching and rooting for don't make it. I'm very sad things worked out this way, but (other than a brief moment after learning this happened) I can't really be mad at the bees for doing what bees do. They play an important part, too.

We'll figure out our plans for next year, and have hopes that the parents are unharmed and will choose to nest... more »

The Sword And The Evening Sky

Just as the last light was fading at the park I noticed a nice spot for a silhouette shot. Conveniently enough I had a camera, a sword, and someone willing to hold the sword up on the crest of the hill. Put them all together and this is what I got. I'm pretty happy with the result.

The Sword And The Storm

Last weekend I attended a rooftop party just south of downtown Austin. The weather report predicted rain and storms, and things looked dire for a while, but the clouds cooperated and stayed just close enough for some nice pictures without actually raining on us. As it happened, I brought a sword along with me, and there were people who thought it would be a fun idea to pose with it. Go figure! This young lady decided to strike a pose up overlooking the Austin skyline, to dramatic effect. I must say, it's fun to have a sword and a camera.

The Summer 'Do

The other day I indulged in something I've never done before. It was time for the annual cue-balling of my head, for purposes of science, and instead of doing it myself like usual my wife suggest I try out having a straight-razor shave.

So I ventured off to a trusty barber (You apparently have to be a specialist to wield on of those things. A regular hair-stylist just won't do.) and she spent a bit over an hour pampering me with hot towels, various pleasant skin emollients, and a very sharp piece of stainless steel. This picture is partway through the process of my transformation from hirsute to hairless, which took more stages than I naively imagined.

All in all it was a pretty neat experience, which I'm glad I tried out at least once. My wife remarked that my cheeks were the smoothest she's ever felt, so apparently the straight... more »

Guardian Of The Galaxy (Cafe)

Galaxy Cafe is one of my family's favorite places to go eat, on account of their great food. I love getting a bacon cheeseburger with macaroni and cheese on the side, but my wife would be quick to point out they have healthier food, too, including a good gluten-free menu. As it turns out they also have great staff, willing to do what it takes to defend the premises with a giant sword make every visit a memorable occasion. With awesome people like this behind the counter, you can be sure we'll be back!

The Sword And The Pizza

Some evenings you're walking past a diner and just inside the window there are kids enjoying pizza. On even rarer occasion, one of those kids is armed with a giant sword. I recently had just such an occasion!

For the sake of full disclosure I must admit that I had something to do with them having the sword in their midst. On the other hand, the kids seemed to enjoy themselves and their parents didn't seem to think there was anything troubling about the idea. That's excellent parenting right there!

Something for Nothing Theater - Henry IV Pt 1

Weekend before last my family and I made our annual pilgrimage to Ramsey Park in Austin to watch Something for Nothing Theater's summer Shakespeare production. This year they put on Henry IV Pt 1, and as usual they did a bang-up job. I've mentioned in the past that my favorite thing about their shows is the minimalist feel they bring, with great acting but almost nothing in the way of set and props. All the costumes are straight from the thrift store, the lighting (which has grown a bit each year) is mainly shop lights from hardware stores, and other than a few swords, chairs, and other small items they have just have actors on a flat slab of concrete in front of an audience.

The show itself ends up being immersive, though. The action happens just a few feet in front of the audience, and while Shakespeare's original dialogue is used the actors speak it in a natural way which makes it very easy for a modern audience to follow right along. You're swept into the story and get wrapped into what's happening with the people right before you. The acting and direction are great, as usual, and the cast clearly loves what they are doing.

The show is going on for one last weekend, this Thursday through Saturday at 8 PM each evening, so if you're in Austin and looking for some entertainment for you and your family I highly recommend checking it out!

Mama Dove In Her Nest

I was at the park the other evening and spotted this dove overflowing her little nest. She eyed me suspiciously, but seemed willing enough to have her picture taken. It seems to me all the birds are nesting later than usual this year. Must be the weird weather we've had.

He Shoots. He Swords!

The other afternoon at the park I ran across these two fellows playing a bit of pick-up basketball. Conveniently enough, they didn't seem to think it was odd I might want to take a picture of them doing so with a sword.

(No basketball players were injured during the production of this photograph.)

The Sword And The Throne

The other evening I was taking some pictures with Natasha and the sword, and someone pointed out I should get her picture sitting in the throne. I looked around the corner from where we were standing, and sure enough this thing was tucked away in an alcove. I'm not sure what she's in charge of sitting there, but I'm sure it's something important...

Laura And The Sword

Sometimes I have to explain to someone why I'd want to take their picture with the sword, and sometimes as soon as someone sees it they're excited and want to pose with it. Laura was definitely one of the latter. Pretty much the instant I showed her one of the pictures she got excited and said "I'm already thinking of ways to pose with it!" Then I pulled it out of its container, her eyes lit up, and she got right to it, hopping up on this picnic table next to a colorful wall of graffiti. That's the sort of reaction to it I really appreciate, I must say!

Papa Owl On Watch

The other day my wife spotted Papa Owl hanging out in a tree overlooking the owl house, but when I was out there later he wasn't there. Now that I know where he likes to hang out, though, I was able to spot him today when I was home for lunch. He's got a nice, shaded vantage point where he can keep a protective eye on things while Mama Owl guards the door.

Creepy Crawly For Dinner

We had a break in the rainy weather yesterday evening, so we sat out and watched the owls feed at dusk. I managed to get a few pictures, but nothing great. However, in this shot I noticed that Mama Owl has something pretty crazy looking for the owlets to eat. I don't think it's a lizard (which is a common treat for the babies) and the legs look too thick to be a walking stick, though I guess it could be. I wish I'd gotten her a little sharper so I could tell. Maybe it'll remain a mystery.

Feeding Time!

I rushed home from the gym last night just in time to get out back with my camera at dusk. Mama Owl was sitting in the doorway of the owl house, but then within a couple of minutes Papa Owl flew past the house, landed in a nearby tree for about a minute, and then flew in to hand off some food for Mama Owl to give to the owlets. I just got this shot and then headed back in, as I didn't want to hang out there too long and potentially be disruptive. Still, I'm very happy to see evidence that we've got owlets in there and will keep a lookout for their fuzzy little faces peeking out to look at the outside world.

Also, now that I think about it, I need to remove the dead branch hanging down there in my field of view. :)

We're Not Out Of The Drought Yet...

Due to the rains brought by the current El Nino, for the first time since mid-2012 Texas is no longer in the "Exceptional drought" category, which is welcome news. That said, it's not time to start ramping up water usage. Here's a chart of the water level in Lake Travis since 2010, showing that Austin's primary water source is a few feet higher than at the same time in 2013 and 2014, but is still 11 feet below 2012 on this date and, more importantly, is still 49 feet below full capacity of 681 feet.

With more people moving to the Austin area every day and further straining the water supply, it continues to look like current lake levels may now be the rule rather than the exception. I sure miss the full lake, and I hope to see it again sometime. Time will tell, I suppose.

Good Owl News, Everyone!

No picture with this update, but I'm excited and wanted to let everyone know. This evening at dusk I lathered on some mosquito repellent and sat out about forty feet from the owl house (over by the chicken coop and run) to see if I could spot any activity. Sure enough, just as it was getting fairly dark the chickens made a noise indicating a predator was about, and I saw one of the parent owls heading into the house, followed a minute later by leaving again to head out back hunting.

I listened carefully and I'm pretty sure I could faintly hear owlets making their "Feed me! Feed me!" noises, which is super exciting. I do believe we have happy little owlets in the owl house! I'll see if I can manage to set up and get some feeding shots tomorrow evening. I love this time of year. :)

The Austin Sword

I was at a Drink and Click event at Spider House last week, and on the back patio they have this lovely neon Oz sign that they've modified to fit in with the Austin decor. +KayLorraine Oetting was kind enough to sit in front of it with the sword so I could take her picture there. They say we're supposed to keep Austin weird, so here's my little part to help out. Now I guess we'll find out what this weekend will bring as far as sword photography opportunities. I hope you all have a great weekend, too!

Protective Mama. My What Big Claws You Have.

I made an attempt to discover if the owlets have hatched, but Mama Owl was awake and discouraged my attempt. I don't want to make her mad or bother the family, so I won't use this method any more. Hopefully soon we'll be seeing Mama sitting in the doorway as the babies start to get bigger, and then after that we'll get to see the babies having their first peeks out into the bigger world. It's an exciting time! Sorry to bother you, Mama Owl.

The Happy Sword

While I was out at the park getting some shots a man and his daughter walked over to see what we were doing. He asked what the sword was from while his daughter shyly watched. I asked if his daughter would like to hold the sword, and after a minute or so she quietly nodded yes. She was very somber and serious when she first held it, carefully checking it out, but then she got this big, happy grin on her face. There's little more infectious than a genuine smile, I think.

The Statue And The Sword

I was down on 6th Street with my camera and my sword and ran across this lady earning tips posing as a statue. I asked if she did commissions and whether she'd be willing to pose with the sword, and she indicated (in a very statue-like manner) that she did and would. I think it made for the quite appropriate situation for the sword. It's funny the things and people you run across if you just look for them.

Mama Owl Makes An Appearance

This afternoon I spotted Mama Owl sitting in the door of her house for the first time in a couple of weeks. Today was a little warmer, so it's possible that she didn't feel the need to incubate her eggs, or just maybe there are now little baby owls hatched down in the bottom of the house. My best guess, based on how it's gone in prior years, is that we're a week or two away from seeing the first baby peeking out of the door. It's all very exciting now!

It's all very exciting now!___

Three Eggs! I Am Very Excited!

After a couple of weeks of patiently waiting without seeing Mama Owl, today at lunch I very carefully and quietly made my way up a ladder and surreptitiously inserted the end of my phone into the owl house door to snap a picture. I didn't even look at the shot while I was up there, as I wanted to get back away from the house quickly, and as I made my way back down I heard clicking from inside the house, followed by Mama Owl peeking out at me to see what in the world was going on out there. I said hi to her as soothingly as I could and then continued down, and she headed back into the house. Once I made it back to the ground I pulled my phone back out and looked at the shot. I must say I was excited by what I saw. Three little screech owl eggs with Mama Owl standing over them!

Now I can go back to patiently waiting until we start to see Mama Owl sitting in the doorway again, and we'll know there are babies in there. Then it'll just be a matter of time until we see the little ones peeking out to have a look at the outside world. Have I mentioned how exciting this is? Yay!___

Protective Mama's Fascinating Natural Behavior

Sunday afternoon my son and I went to McKinney Falls State Park to participate in a fly fishing class. Near where the class was set up, this mother killdeer had a nest in the rocks with a single egg in it. The nest was at the intersection of two paths, so plenty of people came walking by during the hours we were there. This gave us the opportunity to watch the protective behavior of the mother, which is really fascinating.

Killdeer are known for what is called a "broken wing act" because when a predator nears the nest the parent moves away from the nest holding its body as if it has a broken wing and giving a distress call. It pretends to be injured, and thus easy prey, to distract the predator to it instead of the nest. The parent will move closer and keep it up until it has the predator's attention, and then... more »

The parent will move closer and keep it up until it has the predator's attention, and then leads it away before making a miraculous "recovery" and flying away.

It's a really fascinating example of a complex instinctive behavior that brings me wonder at the variety in nature.___

Hopefully No News Is Good News

It's been at least a week since I've seen Mama Owl in the door of the owl house. I recall this happening in the past couple of years, where we spend a couple of wondering what's going on and hoping that there are little ones in there. I'm crossing my fingers as usual that we see sign of some baby owls soon. In the meantime, here's a shot of the quiet owl house complete with a dove sitting peacefully in a nearby tree.

The Brave And The Timid

The baby squirrels are beginning to explore the tree around their appropriated owl house. It's interesting to see the differences in their personalities, at least as far as which are willing to venture up the tree and which stick right by the house. They aren't exactly comfortable with me being close, but they're definitely willing to sit and watch me from the house as long as I somewhat keep my distance. I have to think they're getting close to being big enough to move out and venture forth on their own, but I'm curious whether they'll hang out with that as their home base moving forward. I've never made a study of long-term squirrel behavior, so I don't have a clue.

The Sword In The Street

Here's a shot I got down on 6th Street with a young lady who quite enjoyed playing with my sword. She was quite the free spirit, and interesting, with a Pokemon strapped to her back. I have no explanation for that, but I was happy to take her picture.

Enjoying Some Nice Weather In The Shade

I got this shot of Mama Owl hanging back a little from her usual spot in the doorway. When I see her moving around in there it always makes me wonder how her feet are situated to get her in that position. It's basically an empty wooden box, though there are grooves scored into the inside of the front board to give the babies a sort of ladder for climbing up. I suppose Mama uses those, too.

Starting To Venture Out

Over the past couple of days the young squirrels have been experimenting with exploring just outside the door of their owl squirrel house. I stuck my head out the back door and managed to get this shot of two of them trying to do so at the same time, which was pretty cute, I must say. For tomorrow I'll see what I can get in the way of an owl shot from the other owl house. :)

An Interloper Enjoying The Chickens' Buffet

The other day the chickens were out roaming the back yard and I noticed a couple of white-winged doves in the run sitting on one of the roosts. My presence disturbed the doves, who tried to fly out the opposite side but were thwarted by the hardware cloth screen. I got this shot of Love Bug checking out the dove while the dove checked both of us out, and then I went around to the other side of the run to encourage the doves to make it out the door. The next day we once again saw a couple of doves in the run, and realized that they have probably figured out that when the chickens are out and the door is open there is a large supply of yummy food readily available in there. Presumably they don't eat as much as the chickens, though. :)

Good Morning From The Squirrel Kids

This morning Mama Owl failed to cooperate and was either inside or off running errands while I was out in the yard with the camera this morning. (She was there earlier when I was feeding the chickens, sans camera, though.) However, these two little squirrel siblings were curious what I was doing out there, and obliged me with some cute glimpses of them in the doorway of their appropriated owl house. I'll go out again later in the day to see if Mama Owl is around for a shot, though the weather report says it may pour down rain this afternoon, so we'll see.

Hooray!

Some of you may have seen my post last week showing that our new owl house with the internal camera has become inhabited by a new family of squirrels. When I mounted the new house earlier this year, I put the old house in another tree, to replace the one that was infested with bees in the Fall. Today at lunch time I went out to check on the chickens and on my way back I looked at the new owl house to see if any of the squirrels were watching me (they sometimes do) and that made me think to glance across at the old owl house. I was surprised and excited to see that it looked like something was in the hole, and I calmly and quietly made my way close enough to see that it was an owl, after which I calmly and quietly made my very excited way back to the house to grab my camera. It appears we have owls again! This makes me tremendously happy. :)

The Chef At Play

Yesterday evening I went over to some friends' house, and they treated everyone to a fabulous Korean meal cooked out on the back porch. I hadn't ever seen an outdoor propane wok burner before, but it was awesome and now I want one for my back yard, too. I promise I'll avoid burning anything down!

The Warrior And The Sword

Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours shooting with Crystal, who was kind enough to do some poses for my sword album. I really love the way this one turned out. As always, I am so appreciative when someone is willing and excited to share their time with me on a project that I'm having so much fun with.

Another Take On The Sword And The Capitol

I also have this shot from the balcony overlooking the Texas Capitol, this time with Natalie holding the sword as the fog rolled in. This shot actually has less of the sword than most of the ones in this album, but I still like the way it turned out.

This weekend I'm hoping to get some more sword shots for your viewing pleasure. Wish me luck, and have a great weekend yourself!

Seeing The Band, Sword Style

Or is it seeing the sword, band style? This shot is from Fado Irish Pub here in Austin, as interpreted by +Jordan Schiappa. She thoughtfully posed with the sword on the edge of the stage while the band warmed up, for a little SXSW sword action.

These Are Not The Owls You're Looking For.

Those of you who kept up with our owl saga last year may recall that after removing the owl house that was occupied by bees instead of owls I put up a new owl house equipped with a camera. We have been anxiously checking for owls to move in this year, so far with no luck. Last night, however, my wife happened to do our weekly check and discovered that the house has indeed become inhabited. With the night vision on last night we saw a mama squirrel nursing three rather furry babies. Today in proper light I got this shot of the babies having a mid-day nap up there. They are awfully cute, but I hope they decide to vacate the place soon so some owls can move in.

Seeing A Bit Of The SXSW Music Scene

This past weekend I got invited to go to a little club on 6th Street to see a band play. I had a great time, and the band was pretty good! They were called Collective something or other. I had to shoot from the balcony, as the floor level was so ridiculously crowded that there was no moving anywhere. I hope the rest of you had a great weekend, too!

The Sword In The Glass

I went on a photo walk last night, and right by the spot I parked was a wall with two circular backlit stained glass insets that caught my eye. A nice family happened to be passing by, and I asked if their boys would mind posing in front of the circle with the sword. It turned out they were happy to. I'm pretty happy with this result, and I think I'll have some more from last night to post, as well.

Have Fun Storming The Capitol

The other morning I got to go visit +Amanda Retallack and shoot some pictures from her awesome view overlooking the Texas Capitol. Naturally I'm not one to let an opportunity go by without getting a sword picture or two, and Amanda was a good sport and let me take her picture with it. I really like the way this one turned out. She looks ready to grab her holocaust cloak and take on sixty guards.

The Lady And The Sword: Outtake

While I was wandering around 6th Street taking pictures of people with a rather sizable sword, I had some vague concerns about the heavy police presence and whether they might object to my having it there. Looking back at this additional shot of the young lady whose picture I recently posted, and another passer-by, apparently law enforcement did not find my activities too objectionable.

Wandering With The Sword

I was walking down 6th Street in Austin yesterday afternoon and ran across this group of young wanderers. They asked if I'd like to take a picture of all of them for a dollar. I considered telling them that's below market rate, but I figured that they probably actually wanted me to give them the dollar, rather than the other way around. I decided that I was willing to do so, but only if they'd be kind enough to hold my sword for the shot. Overall I think everyone came out of the deal satisfied.

It's My Park!

Today is It's My Park Day in Austin, where volunteers work on the parks around town doing trail maintenance, trash cleanup, and whatever else needs doing. My family and I volunteered at Walnut Creek Park, where we take our dogs and go hiking more weekends than not. We spent a few hours working on filling low spots with rock and dirt and building runoff arteries to keep water from building up on the trails, and then another hour gathering trash along the banks of the creek where it was deposited in the last round of flooding. It's satisfying to be able to give a little something back to the place that gives us so many enjoyable times. I highly recommend looking out for opportunities like this in your area. For those of you in the Austin area, maybe you can participate next year. I hope to see you around. :)
