Video of bionic exoskeleton
Here's what Chris Tagatac uses to move around. He's totally paralyzed below his belly. This robot helps him walk.
More on this exoskeleton and Chris at https://plus.google.com/+Scobleizer/posts/1s6Z74Qr1gQ

Here's how Chris's bionic exoskeleton works and lets him walk around. More at https://plus.google.com/+Scobleizer/posts/1s6Z74Qr1gQ
By the way, because this is an experimental device he needs a "spotter" who is a physical therapist just to make sure nothing goes wrong. Plus, the government won't let this be used alone yet until it gets more proven.

Meet Chris Tagatac: the first contextual bionic man?
Meet Chris Tagatac. Three years ago he fell off his roof which paralyzed him beneath his belly button. So, how was he walking around the Half Moon Bay Ritz today?
Easy, he was wearing an Ekso Bionics Exoskeleton. More about that at http://www.eksobionics.com/ekso
This exoskeleton, through a combination of about 30 sensors, a few motors, and some cloud computing, helps him get out of his wheelchair and walk around.
He's a delightful human being who is grateful to be here, and be able to walk around while wearing his $110,000 exoskeleton, which is mostly used to help him keep his body in shape, but he says it's life changing because he can look me in the eye and get mobility he can only dream of while in his wheelchair.
We talked about the future of technology that can help him live a be... more »

JONATHAN CHRISTOPHER KENDALL (1962-2013)
With the greatest of sorrow I, +su ann lim , have to inform you that Jonathan Christopher Kendall, my fiancé and love of my life, died suddenly last night on 15 June 2013. Despite the incredible efforts of our friends +Suzanne Jacob +Gaynal Brierley , paramedics and ambulance personnel he could not be revived.
Jonathan lived as he believed, telling it like it is, with wit and humour, enjoying life to the hilt, with honour, directness and compassion. I was incredibly blessed to be the recipient of his immense love, and as each other's beloved, to share unbelievable happiness for too short a time. Jonathan, I LOVE YOU with all my heart and miss you desperately.
One of the favourite activities in his life was to engage with all you here on Google Plus. He thrived on the intellectual challenges, soaked up a vast amou... more »

Freedom of the Press belongs to Bloomberg. Or does it?
I find these trucks funny because I can read all of you and watch your videos without needing one of these between me and you (it's a satellite TV truck). This one I just shot on my Google Glass a few minutes ago. It's being setup to broadcast video from the Half Moon Bay Ritz to the world.
One of the technicians setting up asked me, because I was wearing Glass, "you recording me?" I told him I was an NSA spy and that Obama was listening to us talk. Had a good laugh about that.
Anyway, talking with them I learned that tomorrow's conference will be captured by five cameras. The live video will be broadcast tomorrow at http://www.bloomberg.com/tv/ starting at 6:30 a.m. (which is when I'll be on air with +Emily Chang).
The conference tomorrow has a TON of interesting te... more »

When you are a hall of fame football player this is your life
Ronnie Lott.
If you are a San Francisco 49ers fan you know just what a deal Ronnie Lott is to us fans, particularly back in the 1980s (Wikipedia says he's one of the best defensive backs in NFL history and that's an understatement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Lott ). He's now an angel investor.
My next-door neighbor +Andy Grignon was pitching him on his company. Top secret stuff is on the table, if you can figure out what it all means, Andy probably will hire you -- he is starting an interesting company that will end up on Glass eventually (he has his own Glass and is thinking of visionary ideas for where the future of the world is going).
Steve Jobs gave Andy the title of "fuckchop" when he was working for Apple on the first iPhone team but after the pitch was o... more »

Happy Birthday Vic
I am seeing lots of people wishing +Vic Gundotra (Google VP, he runs the teams that do Google Glass, Google+, and a few others) happy birthday and so did this little search on Google+ to look back on all the times our paths have virtually crossed.
For those who don't know, Vic was the one who hired me at Microsoft back in 2003 after buying a few hundred tablet PCs from me when I worked at NEC.
He and I don't always agree (I still wish he'd invest more in noise filters for Google+ for instance), but you can't deny that the dude does awesome work. I see his fingerprints all over Google Glass and Automatic Awesome features here on Google+.
Here's hoping that he has a new gadget in his pocket (he's a much bigger gadget freak than even me) as his birthday present today.
Thanks for all the great prod... more »

Love this place, great Scotch, great food, and great people. Plus it loves Google Glass!
Speaking of which, I talked with owner Moira Beveridge tonight and we're gonna try to make something happen for Google Glass owners. Will this be the first bar in the world to welcome Google Glass owners? Very possible, we're talking.
Whoever is first will get a lot of PR since there's plenty of places that have banned Google Glass.
But it's smart business to welcome Google Glass owners in. Why?
1. They are affluent. Glass, right now, costs $1,500 (that price will go down next year).
2. They are influential. Glass owners are the kinds of people who will take the time to write you up on Google+/Zagat, Foursquare, Yelp, and other places.
3. They are far more likely to share images, like this one of the Scotch we were drinking.
4. They are e... more »

Vodafone's contextual queen
Had a great meeting today with the person who is running Vodafone's startup incubator, Xone. Why does she matter? Vodafone owns a good chunk of Verizon and is the biggest carrier in the world with business in dozens of countries around the world.
If you have a mobile startup you want her to invest in you. Believe me.
Most of my conversation was off the record (we all had a good laugh when I joked that Obama was listening in anyway, thanks to my Google Glass) but she sees an expansive world for startups that are building for a contextual world. In other words, she sees how deeply sensors, wearable computing, big data, social network data, and location data are changing our world by bringing us better experiences as we walk around with our devices.
She's smart, connected, has tons of resources behind her, and if she ... more »

Your own personal PRISM Who has the best mobile contextual apps?
Hey, if the government is gonna track lots of stuff that we do on the Internet, why not use that power to serve US? That's exactly what contextual apps do -- they help figure out what you need to do next.
I have a list of my favorite ten below. +shel israel and I are writing a book called the "Age of Context." I keep updating this list in my head (and on Flipboard I'm keeping a magazine titled "The Next 10 Years" where I'm tracking all of this stuff).
But I want to crowd source this too. Do you use a contextual app? Something like Google Now that helps you live your life by looking deep into the context of what you are doing?
• Google Now: this app tries to predict where you are going next, what you are doing next, who you are meeting next, the information you... more »

A new kinds of real-time website content helper, analytics: Spinnakr
You might have seen a bunch of news about Spinnakr today. What does it do? Lets website owners change their content based on a new form of real-time analytics. You get warned if something happened that is affecting your traffic. For instance, let's say Techcrunch just wrote about your company, you'd get warned.
Then you can change your content for those new visitors fast. So, you could say "welcome Techcrunch readers" instead of just looking lame and cold.
Here I meet with co-founder Adam Bonnifield and come away very impressed.
The Age of Context keeps creeping closer. Get it at http://spinnakr.com/

Apple made me a little jealous (I still have mostly Macs at home and still am an iPad fan). But Google's openness is bringing me features and experiences that Apple didn't match today (while it did show stuff that others don't yet do, like keep thieves from using my devices).
What this really means is:
1. Apple's profits are safe. If you have an iPhone, this makes you feel good and you aren't likely to dump over and get an Android.
2. Apple's influencers are safe. I spoke to lots of audiences lately and the tech passionates are HEAVILY iPhone, even in Europe.
3. This effectively locks Microsoft and Blackberry out of the market (and the new Firefox and Tienzen OS's). The Apple announcements make those seem lame and continue the Google and Apple world against everyone else.
4. I still think Google Glass is a bigger threat to Apple than it ... more »

Longer look at Umoove: face/eye tracking
Yesterday I put up a shorter version, that I filmed on Google Glass (that is at https://plus.google.com/+Scobleizer/posts/SKQEzTymKrk so you can compare the two video's quality). This one I filmed on my $4,000 Panasonic camcorder and spent a much longer time getting the details behind this very interesting technology.
What does it do? Uses any camera in a mobile device to watch your face and eyes and lets developers build new user experiences using those. You gotta see this.
If Apple announces anything better than this today it'll shock me. We'll have a Gillmor Gang at 1 p.m. to discuss whether Apple is interesting again. But this Israeli startup certainly is!
Thanks again to +Hillel Fuld for connecting us.

Hey, +Vic Gundotra, you should check out Umoove: face and eye tracking that blows away Samsung
What does Umoove do? It lets you use your regular phone's camera, or iPad, to add really advanced face and eye detection. This is really crazy. I shot two videos with these guys today. The first, I shot on Google Glass where CTO Yitzi Kempinski shows my son, Ryan, how he can use his eyes to control his iPad.
Pretty crazy. The second video is shot more professionally and will be up later tonight.
Will iOS 7 have this built in? No one knows but this blows away the eye technology from Samsung. Everyone should check this out. Shipping soon (they will announce some stuff later this week at the E3 game conference).
The future is crazy.
Oh, and thanks +Hillel Fuld for continuing to tell me about these guys.

Glass lets me catch wacky kid moments I always missed
This scene, #throughglass , of my son, Ryan, was only there for a second or two. He was goofing around with me and +Andy Grignon as we had fun outside drinking some wine (he was on the first iPhone team, was called "f**kchop" by Steve Jobs, and now is a Glass user as well, and is building a cool app for Glass). You can barely make Andy out in the reflection in the window.
I turned around and made this image by pushing the camera button on top of Glass. I can do that in less than one second.
I forgot my smartphone inside the house. Yet another opportunity would be missed. Even if I had my Smartphone with me, it takes me three to 20 seconds to get it out of my pocket, find the camera button, and get to the place where it captures an image.
This is a HUGE deal for family photography and s... more »

One app made me love Android and BLOWS AWAY iOS.
One app. Shows just how much a small team can do to change my world.
The app? http://corp.everything.me/ At the end of Gillmor Gang I showed it off http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/08/gillmor-gang-back-in-the-ussr/ and I'll do a comparison to iOS 7 after Apple announces it.
Open systems are the future. Everything.me made my phone much more productive than my iPhone. Apple needs to open up and open up in a major way. Android is starting to pull ahead BECAUSE of its openness.
At +Rackspace this is why we are so supportive of open source and open systems. Such systems usually start out slowly and seem ugly but eventually they enable innovation the others can't match.
Everything.me has me in LOVE with Android finally. Took two months.

But it is where I am putting anything futuristic. Hope you are enjoying my magazines (I have eight of them so far).

Better living through radiation and drugs
My back has been killing me for the past two weeks so today I went and saw a doctor. Luckily nothing too major. The doc had me dress in these funny blue shorts. Too bad I didn't take a picture of me in those with Glass on but I think your eyes have been abused enough with my shower photo. Right +Larry Page ?
Anyway, here's my XRay, which I did shoot on Glass (the doctor is pointing to things, explaining what she sees). She says there is some evidence that a small disc tear might have happened which is aggravating my nerves.
Which brings me to the drugs. Prednisone. This stuff is good. Instantly made me feel better and just slightly high, too. I survived the Gillmor Gang on the stuff.
So, now if you hate what I said about Obama you can accurately say "you're on drugs."

Everyone should listen to President Obama talking about the NSA spying.
Then we should have a debate. But first listen. (The Verge here has an audio link to his comments).
On the Gillmor Gang at 1 p.m. we'll talk more.
I know this is very controversial and many in the community really hate this kind of spying but I generally support these efforts. After 9/11 our world changed. We decided to give up a few freedoms for security (I'm reminded of that everytime I go through an airport).
But it's GREAT that we're having this debate, especially as we head into a new contextual age where my devices are watching my eyes, knowing which direction I'm looking, and can even make pretty good guesses at what I'll do next (see Google Now for an example).

Talk about a fashion cost
I was giving a speech to a bunch of startup entrepreneurs on Monday at a +Rackspace event when this guy showed me a set of sensors he was wearing. Costs $35. He was wearing them on his head, he told me the sensors are watching his brainwaves and can also sense his heartrate and such.

So many times in my life I've seen people who are "weird" and are "willing to put up with the fashion cost" come up with things that turn out to be world changing.

After the speech I was MOBBED by people wanting to try them on. It's amazing the reaction this product is getting. Nearly every hand went up when Loic asked if people wanted them. That matches every other audience that I've talked to.
It's amazing that the three of us each paid $1,500 plus tax to do free PR for Google -- there are very few companies that get that kind of earned media. This is a product that I'm proud to have spent that much on and be an ambassador of. Thanks +Vic Gundotra and +Steve Lee and team!

Here's a version everyone can watch of the BBC debate I had with Jaron Lanier: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22770908 Google Glass and wearable computers.
Media training? If you get on with Jeremy Paxman (many PR people live in fear of him since he has an adversarial interview style) in a debate setting, here's some tips:
1. Get there early and try to have a fun conversation with him before getting on air. That's where Paxman feels you out. I let him try Glass and had a good laugh with him.
2. Make sure you take the other side's point of view (I know the downsides of technology).
3. Wait your turn. No one likes someone who talks over other people. On the other hand, you do need to be firm about getting in your points too. It's a tight balancing act.
4. Self deprecation works a LOT with Paxman. He respects that since he ... more »

Contextual digital advertising coming to London cabs
This is the future of advertising on top of London Cabs. The first 25 cabs will be "lit up" on June 25th. Here's a photo of the first one that I shot on my Google Glass.
I'm talking with Piers Mummery, CEO.
Now, imagine that you aim your Google Glass at this and something happens. That's not that far off.
But these screens will bring contextual advertising to you. How so? The computer has sensors. Temperature. GPS. Time. Inside the cab there might be other sensors that could display things outside. Imagine you could play a game inside the cab.
Ads could change based on temperature. You don't want to advertise ice cream on a cold day for instance.
Anyway, the screen definitely gets your attention, looks different than other screens on top of cab... more »

London/Cambridge just became the Internet of Things leader in my mind
I'm hanging out at Mind Candy all day in London meeting with a ton of interesting startups launching on Friday at http://springboard.com demo day (Rackspace UK arranged for me to meet a ton of its startups). This accelerator recently joined TechStars, by the way.
What is this? It's an Internet of Things startup accelerator. Really mind-blowing new startups.
I wish I could tell you more, for instance, what this little thing is. But I'm embargoed until demo day on Friday.
Any guesses what this is? First correct guess wins a Basis health monitor (costs $250) from me. And, no, I'm not talking about the Apple mouse. :-)

I don't need face recognition on Glass
By now you've heard the news that Google Glass is forbidding face recognition apps. (I've put several articles about that onto my Glassholes magazine on Flipboard at flip.it/ZoHRp -- you'll need either Android or iOS to read that magazine for now, web coming later this year ).
I actually think that's a good thing.
Why? We don't need it.
I've been thinking about this for a long time and am one of the world's best networkers.
It's not face recognition we need. We just need better tools to learn about each other when it's appropriate.
Where is it appropriate?

Why we need a new user testing lab
I see everyone gushing in the press about the HTC One coming with "real Android."
One problem, I have an HTC One and the reception on it is horrible in SIlicon Valley. My brother-in-law and I have been testing it and it drops calls nearly constantly. He is so mad at the device, because he's been forced to use it for a month. He drives a LOT from San Jose to our home in Half Moon Bay and it drops several times during his route. His old Nokia didn't and my iPhone on Verizon didn't (neither does my new Samsung Galaxy S4). I might even blame this on its metal case, the old iPhone that was all metal did the same thing.
Far more often and more predictably than his old Nokia phone.

My public account gets 300x more spam than my wife's Outlook.com account, but less of it, far less, shows up in my inbox. That's superior.
But that was before today. Today everything changes with the addition of a... more »
