Have you given up on Google Voice? Are you happy with the Hangouts integration?

In 2009, I excitedly signed up for Google Voice, and for the most part, it's great. But the parts that aren't great, are really not great. Yes, its a free service, so it's on me to change if I'm not happy with it. Among other things, after years of having no clue that people sent me MMS and thinking I was ignoring them, I finally started receiving notification to check my email and find those images, and then read that it should all work through Hangouts now. Awesome! Except it doesn't work, at least not on iOS on Verizon.

I probably won't stop using my GV# altogether since it sure is handy for signing up for things, setting rules, etc, but I am getting really tired of telling people "here's my number, but if you want to send me pictures or videos, you have to email, IM, or... more »

Ebola for Beginners: How it Works, Why There’s No Cure, and Why It’s So Hard to Control This Time

By Maren Hunsberger, reposted with permission (originally published at http://goo.gl/ZVwoBU)

The internet is awash with news that one of the world’s foremost Ebola-fighting physicians, Sheikh Umar Khan, has himself been infected with the disease (http://goo.gl/i5T6yj), along with two American aid workers (http://goo.gl/VuQJA9). History’s deadliest outbreak of Ebola is currently sweeping across Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, having claimed more than 600 lives already. With a mortality rate of anywhere between 40% and 90% (this epidemic's is around 65%), what is it that makes Ebola one of the most lethal diseases in the pantheon of pathogens? Why is there no cure or vaccine? And why is so difficult to control?

The Basics: Ebola’s full name is Ebolahaemorrha... more »

It seems most people are just putting in photos to that 'how old' site, having a laugh, and not reading about the project. Here's the link below. It's a demonstration of Microsoft's seemingly awful (based on the results I see in my stream) Face API and on the backend, use of their other data products. APIs like this from Microsoft, Google, etc will, in theory, be fueling a lot of the tech advancements we see in the next couple years. Those silly results people are giggling at are where Microsoft is in their progress. It's intended to get developers excited about using their APIs, stream processing, and BI dashboards. We'll probably be seeing more 'fun' apps come out of this soon, especially developers looking to capitalize on the popularity of this one.

They remark about how they could have tested page layout and gathered insights around that, but as of now,... more »

This product is pretty neat--kinda like the Hue Iris, but portable, sleeker design, and presets that can be controlled on the device itself. The Hue line is definitely fun, but can be very practical, especially if you use +IFTTT recipes.

I probably won't stop using my GV# altogether since it sure is handy for signing up for things, setting rules, etc, but I am getting really tired of telling people "here's my number, but if you want to send me pictures or videos, you have to email, IM, or... more »

I probably won't stop using my GV# altogether since it sure is handy for signing up for things, setting rules, etc, but I am getting really tired of telling people "here's my number, but if you want to send me pictures or videos, you have to email, IM, or use this other number that you'll likely get confused about". I'm not thrilled with third party clients (including Verizon's own messaging platform), and I'm not interested in jailbreaking my phone to get iMessage through a web client (I'm not always on a Mac), but I really do enjoy being able to text and call from any device anywhere, screen calls, set up different greetings, etc, etc.

Have you found a workaround for either staying with GV and actually being able to send/receive SMS/MMS, participate in group messages, and easily initiate texts to your Google contacts through Hangouts on iOS, or getting the features elsewhere without signing up for a whole bunch of different services, as some tech bloggers have suggested?___

I know this is more interesting to me since it's part of my job, but there's some interesting information in this press release from Amazon about their holiday shopping trends. Pretty impressive that "more than 10 million new members worldwide tried Prime for the first time" this holiday season!
I wonder if the person who got Bai drinks delivered at 11pm on Christmas Eve, or the person in Philly who got spray for their pet that's marking, know that they're listed here.

A blog post in which I attempt to understand the whole hair/makeup/being somewhat put together thing that has eluded me.

Ladies- I'm curious what your beauty routine is and what your experience is (better mood, more confidence, more respect, etc)
Guys- I'm curious if you even notice this stuff and if you have any thoughts on the topic (you love how much more confident your lady is with it on, you don't think women need to try so hard, etc)

LOL I'm delighted to have just been told that if you Google 'Christmas Selfie' in Google, mine is one of the images to appear in the recommend images place

Which has led to my giving permission to it being used as part of an Australian town's attempt to raise Christmas Carol event attendance through running a photo competition ;)

This makes me chuckle ;)___#tbt when +Jordan Oram was way ahead of the beard decorating trend

Cold Runnings OR maybe I better learn to like the treadmill

I don't like the heat very much--I overheat, get cranky, am a sweaty mess, and generally am not comfortable. I enjoy the cold and am that person getting strange looks and remarks for going out without a coat; I can't wear sweaters unless I literally want "sweater" to be my status because I will be dripping. Surprisingly, though, I run my best when it's hot out, much hotter than what I find acceptable when sitting around. I know, it's weird, but bodies don't much listen to reasoning.

The difference lies in the breath. Before I figured out how to breathe properly while running, I could barely make it a mile before I gave in to side stitches and walked home. Once I figured out the whole breathing thing, I was able to run several miles, reaching a meditative state and running actually became... more »

Once I figured out the whole breathing thing, I was able to run several miles, reaching a meditative state and running actually became really enjoyable! Warm air seems to be pretty easy on my system as long as I take long breaths while making funny faces, but cold air? Cold air feels like torture.

I know a lot of people experience pain in their lungs from the cold air, which I do somewhat experience, but my horrible pain is mostly in my mouth, even if I breathe through my nose (which is a challenge in itself due to my sinus issues). I've tried to explain the pain to doctors and dentists, but it seems this isn't a problem they've encountered before.

It's not just that my pace is much slower (it's slow enough that I'd feel bad joining a group run) or that I am prone to side stitches, or even that breathing takes more effort, but the mouth pain really is quite bad and spreads into my jaw, ear, and head. I am pretty good with tolerating pain, but this is enough to make me call it quits.

The thing with covering your mouth with a scarf, gaiter, balaclava, etc is that although the air warms up, it becomes quite difficult to breathe in general, and depending on the fabric, could end up clinging pretty badly, making it worse. I've tried one with holes, one made out of a thin nylon, but not much luck.

But, every year I at least try a couple times. I've tried on a few days in the past two weeks, but haven't made it very far. There was one day where it was beautiful, in the 50s, I was actually breathing okay, but had foot pain and didn't want to risk injury. I tried again tonight since it is around 40, but...Nope. I made it less than two miles despite my feet and legs feeling fine and having plenty of energy, which was equally as frustrating as having to call it quits in good weather because of my foot.

I'm signed up for a 5k on Saturday morning, so I'm hoping to somehow get my act together by then, but something tells me that I will end up jogging, at best. I really need to finally make friends with the treadmill or else it's going to be another long winter!

If you have trouble breathing while running in the cold, what has worked for you? Or, if you've managed to really enjoy the treadmill, what have you found to be helpful? I try to convince myself that it's nice to be able to regulate my pace for distances, and keep going until I can't go any further since I don't have to worry about turning around and running home, but I just can't get in the zone there.

I probably shared this last year, but it's a good enough gift that it's worth posting again!
Through Nudo, you can adopt an olive tree in Italy for someone and they will receive fresh oil from the harvest. I adopted one for my mom and stepdad last year and gave them the sampler pack with the certificate--definitely a hit and very tasty!
You can also just give a gift pack or adopt honeybees or tea gardens to receive those harvests as well.

Anyone who knows me decently well knows how much I agree with this.

Of course, if we're talking about people who can't afford the things that they need, or you spot something that you're positive someone will love and they have no way to acquire it themselves, that's a different story.

I'm mainly against stuff for the sake of stuff. Give people the things they truly will appreciate, whether it's spending time together, an experience they can do on their own, offering up your time to babysit or cook for an overwhelmed parent, etc.

"*Our approach*
To focus on that single step — turning some data into a simple chart — we built Charted with a few core principles.

Charted does not store any data.
It only fetches and visualizes what the link provides. It also refetches the data every 30 minutes, so the chart is always up-to-date.
Charted does not transform or manipulate data.
It displays only and exactly what it receives. Any necessary calculations or adjustments must already be reflected in the data.
Charted is not a formatting tool.
It is deliberately sparse in features. Charted focuses on getting from the data to the visualization with the fewest decisions possible.
The resulting tool has only a few (optional) features, so anyone can just plug in the link and go."

I'll take the sandwich, but I don't think it will do what you think it will.

I'd like to start with a few points:

• All of the bodies in these images are fine and personal preference is not up for discussion here. I purposely made them all a healthy weight and the focus is on what happens when different body types gain weight, not what anyone finds attractive; there are health risks associated with carrying weight in the midsection, but I kept the applicable model out of the danger zone

• The images were made with modelmydiet.com, which does not allow you to adjust body composition, so you can't add muscle specifically and it keeps average ratios

• For disclosure, the first image is my body type. I'm more muscular, but when eating a healthy diet with some indulgences and doing moderate exercise, I look a lot like the left. When I'm training, despite my midsection being small, it is straighter than shown here. I've been told I look masculine when I'm training, and I've had a few laughs at being told I need to eat since I take in over 3k calories/day at those times. If I gain fat, I start to look like the right and clothing starts to fit really poorly

• Not all people with the same body type will gain weight the same way, some apple-shaped women will never be as "curvy" as the left model of the first image--no matter their weight, they will only look straight, straight and emaciated, or straight and overweight

• Similarly, when people lose weight, their bodies will do different things, but this post is only focusing on the topic of what happens when an apple-shaped woman gains a few pounds within the healthy range

• There are also pear-shaped women, known for having curvy hips and rears while maintaining small waists, but I think these two types used illustrate this specific point best

Okay, now that that's out of the way, I want to address a common misconception that seems to come up a lot: that if any thin woman eats the right amount, she will get curvy (and further, that she isn't eating the right amount because she is thin, and that a woman should be curvy). Obviously people know that if she eats too much, she will get fat, but they tend to think that an extra 15lbs or so will really make her more "womanly" and "curvy". When average-sized people see thin people, they joke that they need a sandwich (or cheeseburger, etc). I will gladly eat a sandwich, if you're offering; I'm sure most of us thin folk would since most of us eat plenty, but depending on the body type, no amount of sandwiches will equal curves.

The virtual model on the left of the first image is arguably pretty curvy for what is often referred to as the apple body shape (fairly straight, tends to gain weight in the midsection). I think she looks healthy, but based on personal experience, I can tell you that at this size (108lbs), she will be offered many sandwiches. Many people will think that if she gains weight, she will get beautifully voluptuous hips and bust, while maintaining an almost-hourglass figure, since this is what we typically see happen for women with an hourglass body type.

Compare this to the second image, which shows the hourglass shape. Notice how the virtual models on the left in both images look extremely similar, but when weight is gained, the differences become quite pronounced--the apple shape did not get curvier, she actually got less curvy, whereas the hourglass did what society seems to think should happen.

What's the problem, though? The problem is that many body-positive campaigns, songs, articles, etc focus on loving your curves, the curves that a "real woman" should have. The only thing you should have is a focus on a healthy body. Some people don't see the harm in these campaigns, but for many young women, it creates the same problem that the campaigns were trying to fight, just with a different ideal. The only ideal should be healthy; the only things you should have are a healthy diet, exercise, and love and respect for your body.

If you are overweight enough to have medical risks despite a healthy diet and exercise, consult a doctor to see if you have an underlying condition, or need to see a dietician and trainer; the quick fix weight loss tactics that are advertised are not a substitute for this and often do more harm than good. If you are healthy but unhappy because you don't fit some ideal, it may be worth reading up on body acceptance, or even seeing a counselor.

Now, I'm off to go eat that sandwich I've heard so much about...___

I've only taught my new kitty a few things so far, but I must say that she's catching on quickly to my clumsy ways.

Pardon my wheezing laugh at the end (I'm ill) and don't worry, she landed on her feet (like cats tend to do) and is fine.

The definitive guide to whether or not you can use that image.

Sharing images online is complicated. This (equally as complicated) flow chart will help you figure it out. I've been writing a long time and I'm still guilty of messing up every now and then. Aren't we all? Regardless, we should always be considerate of content creators and do our best to accurately attribute credit when possible.

When "realistic" isn't realistic
A great read, not just for the skinny nor just the women.

I posted this article on fb the other day, and this part really stuck with me:
"A woman commented on the article saying,
'Wouldn’t it be even better if the picture were of a person more realistic? This size zero blow dried super tan model just turns me right off the content.'
I was the size zero in that photograph."

The thing is, the body that so many people claim is "more realistic" just isn't realistic--or even possible--for women with some body types...if we gain weight, we don't get curvy and voluptuous, just lumpy and unhealthy. Focus on being healthy and stop worrying about forcing any one particular aesthetic ideal on yourself or others.

The Basics: Ebola’s full name is Ebola haemorrhagic fever, a rather gruesome title (the details of which we’ll address shortly). It’s caused by the Ebola virus (no surprises there), which is a member of the Filoviridae family. For context, viruses can be 50-100 times smaller than bacteria, and come in a variety of shapes. Ebola virus, along with its sister, Marburg virus, is thread-like in appearance. Ebola is also a zoonotic disease (http://goo.gl/Kgo5Fu), which means it is transferrable from non-human animals to humans (and vice versa). In Ebola’s case, humans can catch it from non-human primates such as chimpanzees and gorillas, as well as from rodents, bats, and a few ungulates. Transfer of the virus occurs through close contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, and feces, all of which abound after Ebola has done its damage.

A Little Background: The family of zoonotic diseases includes Rabies, Hanta virus, Anthrax, Lyme disease, the ever-infamous Plague (http://goo.gl/8Yeu5c), Toxoplasmosis, and many more, all of which have fascinating life cycles. They also present a unique challenge to communities that live in close contact with the animals that carry these diseases. Animals can often act as a reservoir, meaning they carry the bacteria or virus but present no symptoms themselves. Alternately, the disease can decimate populations of livestock and wildlife upon which a community might depend, contributing to a lack of resources and increased pressure on the human population. Identifying the natural reservoir of a disease is important in containing outbreaks--if you can identify the little bugger that carries the disease without showing it, you can minimize contact with the organism or take steps to control those populations. It’s widely believed that the fruit bat (http://goo.gl/C1qwqd) is the reservoir for Ebola. This is an issue because many communities in Ebola-prone areas consume the fruit that bats snack on (providing easy host-to-host transfer for the virus via bat saliva). Dwellings are also often located near fruit bat colonies. Some outbreaks may also begin when an individual consumes bush meat (http://goo.gl/15isqp), a dead animal carcass found in the vegetation surrounding the community. Consumption of bush meat is traditional in many parts of West Africa, and can sometimes be the only protein that is readily available. If the animal has been killed by Ebola or another zoonotic disease, the individual (and anyone to whom he feeds or sells the meat) can become infected. This ‘human-consumption-of-bushmeat’ infection path is the also leading theory for how the first human became infected with AIDS (http://goo.gl/Z8BZLM).

How it Works: Ebola. The nasty, worm-looking virus that’s causing  damage in West Africa. There are five subtypes (http://goo.gl/vWDxlt) known so far, all named  after their place of origin—the one that’s in the headlines right now is  closely related to the Zaire Ebola virus, the strain with highest mortality rate.  (As of now, no one knows what makes it more deadly than the other  strains). So how does it kill you? When your body produces any kind of  fever, that’s the immune system's response to an infection—inflammation  can help kill whatever’s bothering your body. Ebola essentially sends your  body’s immune system into overdrive. The virus infects the immune cells  that are your first line of defense--monocytes and macrophages. This  means your body is incapable of killing the virus when you first become  infected. The virus then gets to replicate as much as it wants, using your  own primary immune cells as hosts until the infection has grown so large  that the rest of your immune system can’t help but notice. In a valiant effort  to kill the virus, your body produces a fever so high that you go into shock,  your tissues start to degrade and your blood pressure drops, and eventually your organs start to fail.

The virus acts quickly. Initial symptoms of Ebola are varied and often resemble the symptoms of malaria, typhoid fever, influenza or various bacterial infections, all of which are more common than Ebola. It can take too long for Ebola to be diagnosed, and by then the secondary symptoms may have set in: diarrhea, red eyes, vomiting blood, gastrointestinal bleeding from the mouth or rectum, hemorrhaging from the nose and mouth, and bleeding in the brain that may lead to seizures and delirium. After the presentation of these symptoms and a miserable week or so, patients either recover or die from systemic multi-organ failure. While the visible hemorrhaging is what gives the virus its name, it actually presents in less than half of the patients infected with Ebola. Unfortunately for the current outbreak, the Zaire strain is the form of the virus that causes the most severe symptoms.

Why There’s No Cure: Viruses are too small to reproduce on their own, so they have to inject their genome into a host cell. This means that when the host cell replicates, so does the virus. In order for the virus to be able to do its injecting, ‘do all the hard work for me’ trick, it needs to be able to attach to a molecule on the surface of the host cell—this molecule is called a receptor. If the virus doesn’t have the equipment to attach to a certain kind of cell’s receptor, it can’t invade that cell. In fighting viruses, it’s important to identify the virus’ corresponding receptor so you can prevent it from binding and thus prevent it from replicating. With Ebola, this is the missing piece of the puzzle—we don’t know what the receptor is, so we don’t have  a way to stop the virus from proliferating. In humans, Ebola is capable of invading many different kinds of host cells, so it’s possible that it is capable of binding to more than one receptor, making it a dangerously versatile aggressor. Ebola is also notoriously hazardous to study, although many research universities (http://goo.gl/sR7Lk1) and institutions (http://goo.gl/ck7iPj) are working on unravelling its mysteries.

What’s Happening This Time: The current outbreak is the first time that Ebola has rapidly spread to urban areas. With previous incidents of the virus, responders were able to contain the infection within small, rural populations by identifying modes of transmission, points of origin, and mitigating the damage. With large, closely packed populations, however, the virus spreads faster. It’s much harder to identify who has it, who’s given it to whom, and it's difficult to stop people from leaving the area. The West African nations suffering from this outbreak also lack adequate medical facilities and personnel. Without isolation wards and advanced labs, the virus is extremely hard to contain. The infection of the physicians on the ground is a result of the sheer number of patients in their charge. They wore all the proper protective gear, but somewhere in the melee they came into direct contact with infectious fluid. Additionally, some traditional rural practices have accompanied recent transplants to the cities--it is customary in some of the cultures affected by the virus to wash a dead relative’s body by hand before the burial. This is obviously an issue when it comes to preventing disease transmission. To tackle the epidemic without losing the trust and cooperation of those being treated, it's necessary to implement informed, culturally appropriate health care and education.

David Quammen (http://goo.gl/XIS14W) has written an enthralling book, Spillover, about the histories, cultural contexts, and life cycles of the world's zoonotic diseases. His research makes a convincing case that the next human pandemic could be of zoonotic origin. Will it be Ebola? Probably not. In Q&A (http://goo.gl/Vzws4Y) with National Geographic, W. Ian Lipkin, of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University (http://goo.gl/VoTFvE) addresses the fear that Ebola will spread worldwide. He posits that with the health care systems available in high-income countries like the US and the UK, "it's unlikely that we would have widespread disease as a result. We would be on top of it, and we would be able to contain it. Our health care system affords people access to gloves and gowns and personal protective equipment. I don't think there's reason for panic that we're going to be hit with an outbreak of Ebola". All we can do is wait and see, stay updated on developments, and support WHO (http://goo.gl/nT6J0H) and Médecins Sans Frontières (http://www.msf.org/) in their efforts to combat the spread of the disease.
