Amanda Blain3,822,089*IAmGeek Circle Of Amazing - Add These Geeks to Your Stream*Wow! A targeted active and engaged circle of Geeks here on G+. Each and every single one of these fine people shared a post about Whatever it is they are geeky about with the hashtag #IAmGeek . I read and commented on posts about space, zombies, video games, people growing up as geeks, sci fi books,  Mobile phones, neuroscience, Dr Who, Anime, and lots more.  (check out the links to the posts here -https://plus.google.com/u/0/107982618909749811163/posts/hb5jfJS3Gmo)The #IAmGeek  Hashtag trended for most of yesterday. Several people including one post from someone brand new to G+ (less than 100 followers) hit the what's hot list(https://plus.google.com/u/0/107348276687585876026/posts/EuAeicWFVaW), and there were TONS of interactions from the people in this circle, commenting on others posts who used the hashtag.... Awesome!A great experiment and success if you ask me. Proof Circle shares still matter if you spend some time on it. So if you want some more geek in your stream.. why not add this circle up?  If your in the circle, why not share it to reach more geek fans( and why not share another #IAmGeek  post today or later this week :) ) And if i managed to miss you some how.. my apologizes.. There was a lot of stuff happening at once and errors are made. I promise I don't hate you :)#sharedcircle #IAmGeek #geek #circleshare2014-02-13 21:23:031327659146CC G+

Thomas Hawk6,164,4602,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 5 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi and Mi-Sh.  Today's , part 5 of 5, represents Sh-Z. I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6fPart 4-5:  http://goo.gl/Tq9HCO*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-05 16:07:314714431110CC G+

Brett Bjornsen39,607G+ 2 Year AnniversaryIt's hard to believe it's been two years of plusin' already.  I've met some incredible people in my time here since those first days of beta, and it's changed my view of what "social" really is.  When I received my invite to G+ beta back on June 28, 2011, I came here thinking of this space as an easier way to share things privately with people I already knew.   It didn't take long until I began discovering new and interesting people that changed my opinion for the better and I began circling and interacting publicly ( "public or it doesn't count" ring a bell to some of you? ).Almost half this circle is filled with great people I have met in person thanks to Google+.My thanks to everyone in my circles for continuing to enrich my social experience here. #sharedcircles   #googleplusanniversary   2013-06-28 07:48:25166431239CC G+
Daniel Fontaine18,279When I created it, I named this Circle Something Old Something New. Not getting married or anything, I already am, it just seemed appropriate. It includes all the old school familiar faces that helped me appreciate, enjoy and love Google+ since stumbling into my first hangout. It also has a nice helping of newer folks that I have met here on elsewhere that make me enjoy checking my stream and this circle so frequently.I am bit rusty on the circle sharing but if I did this right, if you were notified you are in it and thank you!#sharedcircles   #community  2013-06-11 14:21:49188661163CC G+
Stephanie Calahan1,218FABULOUS WOMEN ON G+ Part 4 of 4My goal was to crowd-source a list of Fabulous Woman on G+ that are Actively posting and Engaging on Google+.  I had originally expected maybe 50 names.  Much to my surprise and , I received over 400+ comments filled with love and positive energy to help curate this list of well over 1491 beautiful people. I would say this was a success and now I'm sharing with everyone PUBLIC.  I hope you will share it far and wide too.  #Google+ will only allow me to share 500 at a time, so the list has been broken down in to 4 circles.  Groups 1-4 do not indicate any specific preference to any woman.  I would have shared one massive circle if I was allowed.Fabulous Women on G+ Part 1 Can be found here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/Srvv4xzeuYmFabulous Women on G+ Part 2 Can be found here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/DRFwReXQvbFFabulous Women on G+ Part 3 Can be found here:https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/7wiyEUFuKsHWhat You Can Do Now------------------------------------* Add these circles to your own circles by pressing the "View shared circle" button below. Then you can either add it to an existing circle of yours or add it as a new circle by giving it a new name. I've labeled mine "Fabulous Women on G+".  (You won't be able to see the circle on mobile or ipad -- you must be on a desktop or laptop.)  See other G+ quirks below.* Once you've added it, I recommend visiting the stream for this circle and browsing through it to see what you find interesting, encouraging, and enlightening. Then, share some love by commenting, +1ing or sharing the posts of your sisters!* Please note, this is a very diverse group of women.  You're likely to see some people in these circles who will see, understand, or experience things differently than you.  They may or may not share your similar interests.  With that in mind, a few suggestions:     -- If you disagree with someone's views, you can very easily remove them from your circle.     -- Please post public vs to these circles directly.  Each of us has separate preferences on notifications and we want to lift one another up, not bog down notifications.  I hope you all see some increased activity, make some new and inspired connections, and lift one another up as we share each other's brilliance.#fabwomenonG+If You Received Notification About this Circle--------------------------------------------------------------------If you're getting a notification about this it's because you've been identified me or others in the circle as a Fabulous Woman on G+ that is Actively posting and Engaging here.  Original Post: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/HHzp7g9aW9tI thought you would want to know that you have been identified as someone the G+ community should connect with!  I don't send out notifications unless it is 100% warranted. G+ Quirky Things to Note----------------------------------------* Google+ has a daily limit of 500 for adding people to your circles. If you haven't added 50 people or more today, you should be fine to add one of the circles daily.2013-06-09 22:47:5043927622CC G+

Dolidh Young (Eileen)499,458*Happy International Women's Day!* To all those lovely ladies out there!!I thought I'd put together a mega-women's circle to share this #WomensDay  These are women that I've circled that have been active this year or I know personally. <3If you've never heard of international women's day, then pop on over to http://www.internationalwomensday.com to get yourself up to speed on what it is and what's going on. The short of it if that it's an international day of celebrating political, social and economic achievements of women, whether it be in the past, present or future.Today, we remember all those important female women who fought for rights, scientists and successful women... But really it's not just there we can stop.. We can remember all those women that have come before... the important ones that we don't necessarily have any more... Mum's, aunties, sisters, partners and friends.Have a great day everyone! It's a fabulous Friday!2013-03-08 13:33:4141217941CC G+

Derek Ross217,705Here's my #SundaySeven via +Louis Gray's new idea. "Many of us here on Google+ are following incredible people - some who we've known for years, friends, coworkers and family. Others are people we only know online, but the relationships can be just as strong, as we learn from each other, discover, discuss and share ideas. Each Sunday, I'll plan on sharing with you seven people I enjoy on Google+. How does one get on this list? First, be awesome. Be smart and share good stuff. Have an opinion. Also - don't already be popular. If I share you the big names, you gain little and I gain less. I look forward to seeing your #SundaySeven ."I don't know if I'll do this every Sunday, but it is still an awesome idea!1) +Laurie DesAutels Besides being a fellow +Google TV Ambassador, she posts a lot of fun and interesting content. You'll find tons of great social media tips from Laurie as well.2) +Joe Martinez gets people. He shares what people want and what people are interested in. I also had the pleasure of hangouting out with Joe a year ago at the NYC HIRL.3) +Sharon Strandskov is smarter than I am (and better looking too), haha. Seriously though, she posts great, engaging content. After reading her well thought out posts and comments, you'll quickly realize you need to circle her.4) +John Lieske understands the tech industry being a seasoned technology professional and certified geek. When I comment on something IT related, I always find John following up, dropping knowledge bombs.5) +michael interbartolo Is another certified geek that should be in your stream. Besides working for NASA... I think I'll just stop right there. Do any of you have a +Lovesac Sactionals couch set?

I've been shopping for a couch for a while and not finding what I'm looking for in the stores I have some familiarity with (except +Crate and Barrel's lounge sofa, but they want me to pay for the down cushions AND the foam ones in order to just get the foam ones, no thanks!). However, every time I walk past the LoveSac store, I am tempted... but it's a lot of money to spend on something that I don't know anyone personally who has experience with the products and dealing with the company (I take random online reviews with several grains of salt).

(before you suggest it, I'm currently watching YouTube videos trying to get a better sense, doing some searches through posts here, and reading reviews on their website, I just like to hear from people directly when possible)

Yeah, no. After everything I've been through trying to get a consistently working phone from Verizon and all the horrible customer service, I can't say I'm too surprised, but... No, I will not send my billing account password in plain text via a social media site where accounts are frequently hacked, to a person that I don't know or trust to begin with.

+Verizon Wireless, is this really standard procedure? This worries me.

Do any of you use +Verizon Wireless Edge program on a family plan where the other members are on regular contracts? I spoke to a sales rep and what they told me contradicts what it seems to say on their website, and it doesn't at all seem worthwhile...but it is very possible that I'm not understanding correctly and their employees don't get it either, so I'm hoping to find someone with firsthand experience.

This article reminds me how much I agree with Arthur Benjamin that statistics should be taught to all students, with higher priority than calculus--statistics will be more useful in life for the average student than most other high school math, by a very statistically significant amount.

What an idiotic use of $4 BILLION.
The Port Authority could have done so many more useful things with that money, and after enough people slip and fall, they're going to have to spend even more putting mats over the marble... which will come in handy for covering up the stains.

The location used as Carcosa in the True Detective finale "is too hazardous for the public to visit"; they recommend checking out Fort Pike instead, which is the same design and in better condition. While I would go see that just because I love that sort of thing, it's obviously missing the appeal of going to the location from the show.

Not sure if there's a catch, but signed up to try TrackR for free and you can, too.

"When an item goes missing with a TrackR device attached, all TrackR enabled phones will begin to search for the item. If another user comes nearby the item, that user's phone will ping our server which will then update the item's owner with the new GPS coordinates. The more people in our network, the more real time the GPS updates will be and the better our devices will work. Help us build the next GPS network."

"For anybody who knows anything about weight loss and nutrition, you will immediately recognize how shallow, and ultimately harmful, only focusing on calories can be. That is because:

1) A healthy body cannot be measured simply by poundage; and

2) Fewer calories do not equal good nutrition.

It is especially saddening because of the blatant misinformation fed to women by the media about how to be fit, or even, what fitness is.

"Toned" is MUSCLE, goddammit, just call it by it's effing name! Muscle.

When women want to get "toned" they are saying the female word for "muscle." They often don't know that "toned" actually means "muscle," and they would never actually say, "My health goal is to build muscle." But what is a round, shapely butt made out of? Muscle. How... more »

I'd be curious to see the profitability stats for +Kickstarter campaigns in aggregate, as well as by category, and maybe sliced a few other ways, but unfortunately, I don't believe this data is captured anywhere. (then again, as a data nerd, I want all the data, for pretty much everything)

When I read articles like the one below from last year, I wonder if a lot of projects end up in at least some debt. In many cases, a little bit of a loss is worth it because you'll make up for it with future sales, exposure, and opportunities, but sometimes, it's enough to kill such opportunities and turn your life upside down.

I took a look through some of the search results for "average profit for Kickstarter campaign" and all the advice on how to have a successful campaign seems to ignore tips on the kinds of hiccups you might not be expecting to encounter and how to... more »

Star Power

This is a fairly lengthy article, but you can get the gist from the first section--the rest goes into background information, more details, and what is suspected to happen when it is turned on. Also, worth pointing out, in case you don't read the excerpts that I included: the conservative estimate is a cost of $20B, or roughly around the same amount that Facebook just paid for WhatsApp.

"For the machine’s creators, this process—sparking and controlling a self-sustaining synthetic star—will be the culmination of decades of preparation, billions of dollars’ worth of investment, and immeasurable ingenuity, misdirection, recalibration, infighting, heartache, and ridicule. We are excited to announce a new project from ATAP, something that we have been working quietly on over the past year.

As we walk through our daily lives, we use visual cues to navigate and understand the world around us. We use our eyes to observe the size and shape of objects and rooms, and we learn their position and layout over time almost effortlessly . This awareness of space and motion is fundamental to the way we interact with our environment and each other.  We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.

The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.

Our team has been working with universities, research labs, and industrial partners spanning nine countries around the world to harvest research from the last decade of work in... more »

The infographic does a good job showing how +Philips' technology would benefit the customer. All using light bulbs, which the store already has fixtures for. Pretty impressive!

"However, indoor directions needn't be the limit of the system. Much as we saw with Qualcomm's Gimbal beacons - used in Apple Stores with the iBeacon system - recently, Philips' version could be used to enable personalized check-outs, deliver venue-specific content during concerts, or anything else which benefits from knowing exactly where the user is.

Where iBeacon relies on short-range Bluetooth connections between phone and store, Philips has opted for what's called visual light communications (VLC). Effectively turning the LEDs on and off at such a high rate that they can be used for data transfer, but also so fast that the human eye doesn't see that flickering, it allows for... more »

The price of Amazon Prime might go up, but even if they increase it by $40/year (the maximum that the article mentions), the cost will still be under $10/mo for 2-day shipping on tons of items, discounted next-day shipping, tv and movie streaming (with a decent selection), and digital books--still a really great deal! I know I personally save a lot of money, as I use well more than $10 worth of shipping every month, in addition to using the other services.

Next Moves for Lenovo's Newly Reorganized Mobile Business Group

Yet another example of internet outrage and circulation of "horrifying facts" that are not actually true.

• Not Denmark
• Not an endangered animal
• Not a rite of passage
• Not sold for profit
etc...

It is a sustainable killing that feeds communities on an island without an abundance of local food sources (it's one of their primary food sources); they use a method that ensures a quick and less-painful death. I've been vegetarian for 20 years and I am less horrified by this practice than I am by factory faming in the US. That being said, apparently the levels of mercury are quite high and there have been pushes to deem it unfit for consumption, so hopefully they'll move away from it for those reasons and find safer food options.

Why Facebook and Google+ are headed in opposite directions.

Don't look now, but Google is way ahead of Facebook in the social business: http://goo.gl/mjjNAt

(Most people believe the opposite because they don't understand what the business is.)

Still, don't count Facebook out. They have an aggressive strategy to catch up. And Facebook's approach is the opposite of Google's in one major way: Facebook is spinning out new products while Google is integrating. But these opposite directions are intended to lead each company to the same place.

Who will get there first?

The Cookie Perfection Machine. Ben Krasnow built a machine that allows him to
mix a single cookie, and so he can have a different recipe for each cookie on the sheet. This way he can taste all of them and decide which recipe variations
he likes the most. The machine consists of a carousel where each station on the carousel contains a specific ingredient. The ingredients are dispensed carefully onto a balance and the entire system is monitored and controlled by a computer program. By using this machine he can test 20 or 30 different cookie recipe variations in 1 afternoon.

One surprising result is that adding more flour to the cookie doesn't necessarily make it dryer or more crumbly. In fact having too little flour makes the dough very wet, which spreads out in the oven and then becomes crisp because all the liquid, all the water has been cooked away.

"Yesterday Shipping" may have been an April Fools joke, but Amazon is getting one step closer with the patent they filed for "Anticipatory Shipping", in which the package would be waiting with a shipping company, ready to go once you place the order.

"In deciding what to ship, Amazon said it may consider previous orders, product searches, wish lists, shopping-cart contents, returns and even how long an Internet user’s cursor hovers over an item."

"Amazon said the predictive shipping method might work particularly well for a popular book or other items that customers want on the day they are released. As well, Amazon might suggest items already in transit to customers using its website to ensure they are delivered, according to the patent."

EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT, JUST COOK IT YOURSELF.

Yes, it's oversimplified. But there is truth in here that can benefit most of us who feel we struggle with our relationship with food.

And this doesn't only apply to the food you order out, but to the food you buy when you're grocery shopping, too.

When cooking your food from whole ingredients becomes your norm and the other stuff - including things like ready made pasta sauces and salad dressings and soups in a can, pre-made sweets (i.e., PROCESSED FOOD) - becomes an exception again, you'll be surprised at how this ONE change in your approach to food will take away your meal to meal struggle with dietary choices and give you a much more whole and comprehensive understanding of what it is you're putting in your body and how it benefits or harms you, both from a satisfaction and nutrition standpoint.

Since the teen/young adult audience is moving away from Facebook, it seems they are hoping to take advantage of the statistic that 30 percent of Americans reported that they use Facebook to read news (citation in article), and are finally implementing a feature that has been useful on Twitter, Google+, and elsewhere, with their personalization algorithm, of course. Based on my feelings towards their other algorithms, I'm not sure that says much in the way of it being more useful.

A sound is coming from one of the many tabs you have open, but which one is it?  We hear you! You can now visually scan your tabs for a speaker icon to quickly find the noisy offender, and also see which tabs are using your webcam or #Chromecast.

To find a noisy tab, make sure you have the latest version of #Chrome. Learn more: http://goo.gl/qmfs47
