Thomas Hawk6,164,4602,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 5 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi and Mi-Sh.  Today's , part 5 of 5, represents Sh-Z. I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6fPart 4-5:  http://goo.gl/Tq9HCO*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-05 16:07:314714429109CC G+

Brett Bjornsen39,607G+ 2 Year AnniversaryIt's hard to believe it's been two years of plusin' already.  I've met some incredible people in my time here since those first days of beta, and it's changed my view of what "social" really is.  When I received my invite to G+ beta back on June 28, 2011, I came here thinking of this space as an easier way to share things privately with people I already knew.   It didn't take long until I began discovering new and interesting people that changed my opinion for the better and I began circling and interacting publicly ( "public or it doesn't count" ring a bell to some of you? ).Almost half this circle is filled with great people I have met in person thanks to Google+.My thanks to everyone in my circles for continuing to enrich my social experience here. #sharedcircles   #googleplusanniversary   2013-06-28 07:48:25166431238CC G+

Stephanie Calahan1,218FABULOUS WOMEN ON G+ Part 4 of 4My goal was to crowd-source a list of Fabulous Woman on G+ that are Actively posting and Engaging on Google+.  I had originally expected maybe 50 names.  Much to my surprise and , I received over 400+ comments filled with love and positive energy to help curate this list of well over 1491 beautiful people. I would say this was a success and now I'm sharing with everyone PUBLIC.  I hope you will share it far and wide too.  #Google+ will only allow me to share 500 at a time, so the list has been broken down in to 4 circles.  Groups 1-4 do not indicate any specific preference to any woman.  I would have shared one massive circle if I was allowed.Fabulous Women on G+ Part 1 Can be found here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/Srvv4xzeuYmFabulous Women on G+ Part 2 Can be found here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/DRFwReXQvbFFabulous Women on G+ Part 3 Can be found here:https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/7wiyEUFuKsHWhat You Can Do Now------------------------------------* Add these circles to your own circles by pressing the "View shared circle" button below. Then you can either add it to an existing circle of yours or add it as a new circle by giving it a new name. I've labeled mine "Fabulous Women on G+".  (You won't be able to see the circle on mobile or ipad -- you must be on a desktop or laptop.)  See other G+ quirks below.* Once you've added it, I recommend visiting the stream for this circle and browsing through it to see what you find interesting, encouraging, and enlightening. Then, share some love by commenting, +1ing or sharing the posts of your sisters!* Please note, this is a very diverse group of women.  You're likely to see some people in these circles who will see, understand, or experience things differently than you.  They may or may not share your similar interests.  With that in mind, a few suggestions:     -- If you disagree with someone's views, you can very easily remove them from your circle.     -- Please post public vs to these circles directly.  Each of us has separate preferences on notifications and we want to lift one another up, not bog down notifications.  I hope you all see some increased activity, make some new and inspired connections, and lift one another up as we share each other's brilliance.#fabwomenonG+If You Received Notification About this Circle--------------------------------------------------------------------If you're getting a notification about this it's because you've been identified me or others in the circle as a Fabulous Woman on G+ that is Actively posting and Engaging here.  Original Post: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/HHzp7g9aW9tI thought you would want to know that you have been identified as someone the G+ community should connect with!  I don't send out notifications unless it is 100% warranted. G+ Quirky Things to Note----------------------------------------* Google+ has a daily limit of 500 for adding people to your circles. If you haven't added 50 people or more today, you should be fine to add one of the circles daily.2013-06-09 22:47:5043927622CC G+

Yeah, no. After everything I've been through trying to get a consistently working phone from Verizon and all the horrible customer service, I can't say I'm too surprised, but... No, I will not send my billing account password in plain text via a social media site where accounts are frequently hacked, to a person that I don't know or trust to begin with.

+Verizon Wireless, is this really standard procedure? This worries me.

I've only taught my new kitty a few things so far, but I must say that she's catching on quickly to my clumsy ways.

Pardon my wheezing laugh at the end (I'm ill) and don't worry, she landed on her feet (like cats tend to do) and is fine.

The definitive guide to whether or not you can use that image.

Sharing images online is complicated. This (equally as complicated) flow chart will help you figure it out. I've been writing a long time and I'm still guilty of messing up every now and then. Aren't we all? Regardless, we should always be considerate of content creators and do our best to accurately attribute credit when possible.

When "realistic" isn't realistic
A great read, not just for the skinny nor just the women.

I posted this article on fb the other day, and this part really stuck with me:
"A woman commented on the article saying,
'Wouldn’t it be even better if the picture were of a person more realistic? This size zero blow dried super tan model just turns me right off the content.'
I was the size zero in that photograph."

The thing is, the body that so many people claim is "more realistic" just isn't realistic--or even possible--for women with some body types...if we gain weight, we don't get curvy and voluptuous, just lumpy and unhealthy. Focus on being healthy and stop worrying about forcing any one particular aesthetic ideal on yourself or others.

Ebola for Beginners: How it Works, Why There’s No Cure, and Why It’s So Hard to Control This Time

By Maren Hunsberger, reposted with permission (originally published at http://goo.gl/ZVwoBU)

The internet is awash with news that one of the world’s foremost Ebola-fighting physicians, Sheikh Umar Khan, has himself been infected with the disease (http://goo.gl/i5T6yj), along with two American aid workers (http://goo.gl/VuQJA9). History’s deadliest outbreak of Ebola is currently sweeping across Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, having claimed more than 600 lives already. With a mortality rate of anywhere between 40% and 90% (this epidemic's is around 65%), what is it that makes Ebola one of the most lethal diseases in the pantheon of pathogens? Why is there no cure or vaccine? And why is so difficult to control?

The Basics: Ebola’s full name is Ebola haemorrhagic fever, a rather gruesome title (the details of which we’ll address shortly). It’s caused by the Ebola virus (no surprises there), which is a member of the Filoviridae family. For context, viruses can be 50-100 times smaller than bacteria, and come in a variety of shapes. Ebola virus, along with its sister, Marburg virus, is thread-like in appearance. Ebola is also a zoonotic disease (http://goo.gl/Kgo5Fu), which means it is transferrable from non-human animals to humans (and vice versa). In Ebola’s case, humans can catch it from non-human primates such as chimpanzees and gorillas, as well as from rodents, bats, and a few ungulates. Transfer of the virus occurs through close contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, and feces, all of which abound after Ebola has done its damage.

A Little Background: The family of zoonotic diseases includes Rabies, Hanta virus, Anthrax, Lyme disease, the ever-infamous Plague (http://goo.gl/8Yeu5c), Toxoplasmosis, and many more, all of which have fascinating life cycles. They also present a unique challenge to communities that live in close contact with the animals that carry these diseases. Animals can often act as a reservoir, meaning they carry the bacteria or virus but present no symptoms themselves. Alternately, the disease can decimate populations of livestock and wildlife upon which a community might depend, contributing to a lack of resources and increased pressure on the human population. Identifying the natural reservoir of a disease is important in containing outbreaks--if you can identify the little bugger that carries the disease without showing it, you can minimize contact with the organism or take steps to control those populations. It’s widely believed that the fruit bat (http://goo.gl/C1qwqd) is the reservoir for Ebola. This is an issue because many communities in Ebola-prone areas consume the fruit that bats snack on (providing easy host-to-host transfer for the virus via bat saliva). Dwellings are also often located near fruit bat colonies. Some outbreaks may also begin when an individual consumes bush meat (http://goo.gl/15isqp), a dead animal carcass found in the vegetation surrounding the community. Consumption of bush meat is traditional in many parts of West Africa, and can sometimes be the only protein that is readily available. If the animal has been killed by Ebola or another zoonotic disease, the individual (and anyone to whom he feeds or sells the meat) can become infected. This ‘human-consumption-of-bushmeat’ infection path is the also leading theory for how the first human became infected with AIDS (http://goo.gl/Z8BZLM).

How it Works: Ebola. The nasty, worm-looking virus that’s causing  damage in West Africa. There are five subtypes (http://goo.gl/vWDxlt) known so far, all named  after their place of origin—the one that’s in the headlines right now is  closely related to the Zaire Ebola virus, the strain with highest mortality rate.  (As of now, no one knows what makes it more deadly than the other  strains). So how does it kill you? When your body produces any kind of  fever, that’s the immune system's response to an infection—inflammation  can help kill whatever’s bothering your body. Ebola essentially sends your  body’s immune system into overdrive. The virus infects the immune cells  that are your first line of defense--monocytes and macrophages. This  means your body is incapable of killing the virus when you first become  infected. The virus then gets to replicate as much as it wants, using your  own primary immune cells as hosts until the infection has grown so large  that the rest of your immune system can’t help but notice. In a valiant effort  to kill the virus, your body produces a fever so high that you go into shock,  your tissues start to degrade and your blood pressure drops, and eventually your organs start to fail.

The virus acts quickly. Initial symptoms of Ebola are varied and often resemble the symptoms of malaria, typhoid fever, influenza or various bacterial infections, all of which are more common than Ebola. It can take too long for Ebola to be diagnosed, and by then the secondary symptoms may have set in: diarrhea, red eyes, vomiting blood, gastrointestinal bleeding from the mouth or rectum, hemorrhaging from the nose and mouth, and bleeding in the brain that may lead to seizures and delirium. After the presentation of these symptoms and a miserable week or so, patients either recover or die from systemic multi-organ failure. While the visible hemorrhaging is what gives the virus its name, it actually presents in less than half of the patients infected with Ebola. Unfortunately for the current outbreak, the Zaire strain is the form of the virus that causes the most severe symptoms.

Why There’s No Cure: Viruses are too small to reproduce on their own, so they have to inject their genome into a host cell. This means that when the host cell replicates, so does the virus. In order for the virus to be able to do its injecting, ‘do all the hard work for me’ trick, it needs to be able to attach to a molecule on the surface of the host cell—this molecule is called a receptor. If the virus doesn’t have the equipment to attach to a certain kind of cell’s receptor, it can’t invade that cell. In fighting viruses, it’s important to identify the virus’ corresponding receptor so you can prevent it from binding and thus prevent it from replicating. With Ebola, this is the missing piece of the puzzle—we don’t know what the receptor is, so we don’t have  a way to stop the virus from proliferating. In humans, Ebola is capable of invading many different kinds of host cells, so it’s possible that it is capable of binding to more than one receptor, making it a dangerously versatile aggressor. Ebola is also notoriously hazardous to study, although many research universities (http://goo.gl/sR7Lk1) and institutions (http://goo.gl/ck7iPj) are working on unravelling its mysteries.

What’s Happening This Time: The current outbreak is the first time that Ebola has rapidly spread to urban areas. With previous incidents of the virus, responders were able to contain the infection within small, rural populations by identifying modes of transmission, points of origin, and mitigating the damage. With large, closely packed populations, however, the virus spreads faster. It’s much harder to identify who has it, who’s given it to whom, and it's difficult to stop people from leaving the area. The West African nations suffering from this outbreak also lack adequate medical facilities and personnel. Without isolation wards and advanced labs, the virus is extremely hard to contain. The infection of the physicians on the ground is a result of the sheer number of patients in their charge. They wore all the proper protective gear, but somewhere in the melee they came into direct contact with infectious fluid. Additionally, some traditional rural practices have accompanied recent transplants to the cities--it is customary in some of the cultures affected by the virus to wash a dead relative’s body by hand before the burial. This is obviously an issue when it comes to preventing disease transmission. To tackle the epidemic without losing the trust and cooperation of those being treated, it's necessary to implement informed, culturally appropriate health care and education.

David Quammen (http://goo.gl/XIS14W) has written an enthralling book, Spillover, about the histories, cultural contexts, and life cycles of the world's zoonotic diseases. His research makes a convincing case that the next human pandemic could be of zoonotic origin. Will it be Ebola? Probably not. In Q&A (http://goo.gl/Vzws4Y) with National Geographic, W. Ian Lipkin, of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University (http://goo.gl/VoTFvE) addresses the fear that Ebola will spread worldwide. He posits that with the health care systems available in high-income countries like the US and the UK, "it's unlikely that we would have widespread disease as a result. We would be on top of it, and we would be able to contain it. Our health care system affords people access to gloves and gowns and personal protective equipment. I don't think there's reason for panic that we're going to be hit with an outbreak of Ebola". All we can do is wait and see, stay updated on developments, and support WHO (http://goo.gl/nT6J0H) and Médecins Sans Frontières (http://www.msf.org/) in their efforts to combat the spread of the disease.

Which is worse: trolls being jerks on purpose for amusement, or regular jerks who honestly think the rubbish they say and can't be reasoned with?

Does it come down to intentions? Or whether there is a reasonable person in there at the end of the day?

This makes me very sad. We protect historic buildings to the point where functional renovations can't be made, but will allow the Grand Canyon to be disrespected with more homes, hotels, commercial space, gondolas, etc that will put an even harsher strain on the ecosystem, and of course, the aesthetic.

"Park officials say existing development around the park and the scarcity of water have already stressed the park's ability to handle visitors. The new projects would only make matters worse."

Also, the second stat is the percentage of engineering students who are women, which is a very sloppy comparison since it doesn't take into account the percentage of boys who said they liked math and science as kids, nor the actual number of women engineers and how that relates to the percentage who had an interest. I'm going to stop myself before I start rambling on about things like Simpson's Paradox and such. Furthermore, I'd need to read the study, but I am guessing the sample size of 4th graders was significantly smaller than all engineering students.

Clarification since apparently my intent was misunderstood: my point is that there is a lot more to math and science than just engineering so it makes no sense to compare the number of girls who say they like math and science as kids to the percentage of engineers who are women.___

However, every time I walk past the LoveSac store, I am tempted... but it's a lot of money to spend on something that I don't know anyone personally who has experience with the products and dealing with the company (I take random online reviews with several grains of salt).

(before you suggest it, I'm currently watching YouTube videos trying to get a better sense, doing some searches through posts here, and reading reviews on their website, I just like to hear from people directly when possible)

I'd be curious to see the profitability stats for +Kickstarter campaigns in aggregate, as well as by category, and maybe sliced a few other ways, but unfortunately, I don't believe this data is captured anywhere. (then again, as a data nerd, I want all the data, for pretty much everything)

When I read articles like the one below from last year, I wonder if a lot of projects end up in at least some debt. In many cases, a little bit of a loss is worth it because you'll make up for it with future sales, exposure, and opportunities, but sometimes, it's enough to kill such opportunities and turn your life upside down.

I took a look through some of the search results for "average profit for Kickstarter campaign" and all the advice on how to have a successful campaign seems to ignore tips on the kinds of hiccups you might not be expecting to encounter and how to... more »

I took a look through some of the search results for "average profit for Kickstarter campaign" and all the advice on how to have a successful campaign seems to ignore tips on the kinds of hiccups you might not be expecting to encounter and how to avoid them, as well as the best approach for padding your profits to account for potential problems without getting so greedy that people don't want to support you.

I'd venture to guess (though I could be wrong) that the average person creating a Kickstarter to fund their project does not have too much experience in this and is just coming up with what they think sounds good.

Note: the headline is somewhat misleading, as it was the house he was using for his business, but was not his primary residence

Star Power

This is a fairly lengthy article, but you can get the gist from the first section--the rest goes into background information, more details, and what is suspected to happen when it is turned on. Also, worth pointing out, in case you don't read the excerpts that I included: the conservative estimate is a cost of $20B, or roughly around the same amount that Facebook just paid for WhatsApp.

"For the machine’s creators, this process—sparking and controlling a self-sustaining synthetic star—will be the culmination of decades of preparation, billions of dollars’ worth of investment, and immeasurable ingenuity, misdirection, recalibration, infighting, heartache, and ridicule. "For the machine’s creators, this process—sparking and controlling a self-sustaining synthetic star—will be the culmination of decades of preparation, billions of dollars’ worth of investment, and immeasurable ingenuity, misdirection, recalibration, infighting, heartache, and ridicule. Few engineering feats can compare, in scale, in technical complexity, in ambition or hubris. Even the iter organization, a makeshift scientific United Nations, assembled eight years ago to construct the machine, is unprecedented. Thirty-five countries, representing more than half the world’s population, are invested in the project, which is so complex to finance that it requires its own currency: the iter Unit of Account."

"No one knows iter’s true cost, which may be incalculable, but estimates have been rising steadily, and a conservative figure rests at twenty billion dollars—a sum that makes iter the most expensive scientific instrument on Earth. But if it is truly possible to bottle up a star, and to do so economically, the technology could solve the world’s energy problems for the next thirty million years, and help save the planet from environmental catastrophe. Hydrogen, a primordial element, is the most abundant atom in the universe, a potential fuel that poses little risk of scarcity. Eventually, physicists hope, commercial reactors modelled on iter will be built, too—generating terawatts of power with no carbon, virtually no pollution, and scant radioactive waste. The reactor would run on no more than seawater and lithium. It would never melt down. "

Let's Tango.
I'm excited to see what the developers do with this! What would your application be?

via +Allan Vitus

We are excited to announce a new project from ATAP, something that we have been working quietly on over the past year.

As we walk through our daily lives, we use visual cues to navigate and understand the world around us. We use our eyes to observe the size and shape of objects and rooms, and we learn their position and layout over time almost effortlessly . This awareness of space and motion is fundamental to the way we interact with our environment and each other.  We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.

The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.

Our team has been working with universities, research labs, and industrial partners spanning nine countries around the world to harvest research from the last decade of work in robotics and computer vision, concentrating that technology into a unique mobile phone.  Now, we’re ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help pull those ideas into reality.

What if you never found yourself lost in a new building again?  What if directions to a new location didn’t stop at the street address? Imagine playing hide-and-seek in your house with your favorite game character. Imagine competing against a friend for control over physical space with your own miniature army.

We hope you will take this journey with us. We believe it will be one worth traveling.  To find out more, and apply for a development kit visit  http://g.co/ProjectTango.

The future is awesome. Let’s build it together.

The infographic does a good job showing how +Philips' technology would benefit the customer. All using light bulbs, which the store already has fixtures for. Pretty impressive!

"However, indoor directions needn't be the limit of the system. Much as we saw with Qualcomm's Gimbal beacons - used in Apple Stores with the iBeacon system - recently, Philips' version could be used to enable personalized check-outs, deliver venue-specific content during concerts, or anything else which benefits from knowing exactly where the user is.

Where iBeacon relies on short-range Bluetooth connections between phone and store, Philips has opted for what's called visual light communications (VLC). Effectively turning the LEDs on and off at such a high rate that they can be used for data transfer, but also so fast that the human eye doesn't see that flickering, it allows for... more »

"And that photo was everywhere the next week, and it made me feel good and guilty at the same time. Because, on the other hand, that photo was fantasy. That photo was me, but it was me at my most excellent. A moment in time. The point of the stride free from gravity. The angle of repose. I was acting the part of a superhero in a Marvel movie. It showed no evidence of all of my imperfections. That picture was what we all want to feel about ourselves, myself included. I spent my teenage years looking at fantasy photos like that and feeling inadequate. And now it was my body in that photo."

So, she set herself free and posted shots from that same week where she looked 'normal'.

I think a lot of people romanticize 'fit' bodies and end up discouraged, that despite all their hard work they will never look like the professional athlete, or even the person at the gym, that they look to for inspiration.
I'm happy to see a fitness role model like +Lauren Fleshman, who also graced the catwalk during New York Fashion Week, showing that even her amazingly fit body has cellulite, bloating, and behaves much like the rest of ours.

Stop worrying about your body looking perfect at all times and focus on being healthy.___
