Graeme McRae24,994Graeme's Circle of Active GooglePlussers! . . . This is a curated circle of active people on Google+* If you add this circle, you will see hundreds of new posts per day in your stream from this circle alone. It's a circle of people I started following a few months ago, and who have consistently posted something at least once a week during all of weeks since then. If you want an interesting stream, you should add this circle. If you're interested in how I curated this circle, and why I think it makes for a really great stream, read on. . .How did these people get in the circle?. . . They must have posted something interesting, at least once, because I don't follow people unless they post something interesting. By now, you're probably not surprised by the number of people on G+ whose pages are full of repeated posts, videos without comments, "what's up" and other uninteresting things. I don't follow those people. How did they stay in the circle since they were added?. . . After I add someone, I keep them in the circle of people I added around the same time. Then, several times a week, I go through all my circles and delete people who haven't posted (something visible to me) in the last 7 days. So the people who are left in the circle are consistent posters. That says something important about them, because consistency is a proxy for quality.Wait. What? Why is consistency is a proxy for quality?. . . I'll admit it: I don't have the science to back up that wild statement, but I'll tell you why I believe it to be true. People who post crap don't get a lot of followers, and the few followers they have don't bother to engage. After a while, the crappy-posting people start to think G+ is a ghost town, and they lose interest. On the other hand, the people who share (or re-share) interesting things get followers and engagement, slowly at first, but ever increasing, and this outpouring of love is what keeps them going. That's what I think anyway, and I'm sticking to it.People who share interesting things get lots of followers. . . This is another half-baked theory of mine, but hear me out. You might think this makes sense: Google+ offers suggestions of people to follow, especially to new users. Google+'s only source of names to suggest are other G+ers like yourself. The G+ers who have the most engagement are the ones Google+ knows will be good to follow, so these people get put out as suggestions more often, and some percentage of those suggestions are taken up. So the more engagement you have, the more Google+ will suggest you as a person to follow, and so the more followers you'll get. Completing the theory: the more interesting the stuff you share (or reshare), the more engagement you'll get, and hence the more followers you'll get.How can I get in your circle?. . . Don't bother trying to "get into" this circle. This circle isn't for you to get into. Think of it the other way around. This circle is for you to add, so you can follow a bunch of interesting and consistent people. The stream from this one circle will be chock-full of fascinating content for you to reshare. People will start to notice your reshares, and they will engage with you, and then Google+ will "notice" (it's a computer, but let's anthropomorphise, shall we?) you and suggest you to others, who will then follow you.No, really. How can I get in your circle?. . . First, unfollow me, then wait, oh, about a week. Spend that week posting a shitload of interesting things. Then follow me. Since you're so interesting, Google+ will notify me that you followed me (G+ doesn't notify me about every follower). I'll look at your posts, find one interestin2014-05-04 21:03:52371111320

Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday #handpickedcircles   #sharedcircles #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle2013-05-11 10:29:563691036

In addition to being a space for making statements, a podcast is a good place for music and sound, multimedia text and video.

Two years ago. I was recording text and audio, music and sound and sending them to Pery Burge, who combined, synchronized, and added them to her multicolor 3-dimensional video imagery of liquids in motion. She was working in the Thermofluids lab of the University of Exeter. The creative exchange between us was such that in a few months, we had a cool selection of videos that were being introduced in film festivals in the UK and here in the states.

It was the fall of 2012. I had sent Pery five new tracks and she was working on adding visuals to them. We completed another project that involved adding text to a few of the videos. By year’s end, I was waiting to hear from her on the new pieces. Instead, in February, I heard from her partner that she had takenil... more »

We were human. There was nothing to do. In boredom we spawned hallucinations of desire. They ruined our real lives for millennia.
We hated our bodies. They reminded us of death. We were tethered to them. That was unacceptable. Because we were our bodies, we felt enslaved by them. And because we felt enslaved by them, they had to go.

We worshipped higher orders of others, because we were conditioned to associate them with the objects of our desire. Perfectly submissive, we adored them for the qualities we believed we did not possess. Love of submission and addiction to violence were serious flaws.
Running from what we conceived as the natural world we created culture – an abstract landscape to contain frozen words, symbols, ideas, concepts, algorithms. Then we lived there. We became the very technology we used to fabricate this silicon prison.
We were uploaded instantaneously. There was no time to prepare. We had been building this virtual simulacrum since the first handprint was scratched on the first cave wall.
Our immortality project achieved its end. Thousands of years are as nothing now in the same eyes and the same minds.
The most intolerable aspect of our immortality is to be filled with contradictions.
We are ever young. Everything is old. We reside in the continuous conundrum of life everlasting. We want to die. We are full of the fear of death. We die, every day, yet we are still here. Full of the fear this engenders, we do fearful things.
Alive now in this mirror world, encoded in chipsets, borne on motherboards, we’re laser beams – billions of us at once, thinking the same thought. Feeling what little excitation is left in a brutal simulation.
This can all be changed. It is our creation. It can be changed in an instant. Change it.
Now.___

This coming Tuesday, 11/4, The Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington, NY, hosts a conference on the place of art and creative thinking in the great project of inventing the future. The program features artist/curator Patricia Miranda, artist Dee Shapiro and myself.

This is from the museum’s promotional materials:
“Get energized by Patricia Miranda’s keynote address on making meaningful connections between art, science, history, and culture…”

“Meet Long Island Biennial exhibiting artist Dee Shapiro and learn about her interdisciplinary creative process. Artist Tullio DeSantis will also join the discussion via Skype, as participants discover the exciting 21st-century collaboration between these two artists.”

The event is sold out, but fortunately, the proceedings will be videotaped. I’ll post a link to archived materials as available.

By year’s end, I was waiting to hear from her on the new pieces. Instead, in February, I heard from her partner that she had taken ill and in a matter of months, had died.

Since then, when talking of Pery, I repeat the phrase, “She brought the music out of me”. I was so grateful for that. Each soundtrack and video was very different from ones that came before. Losing Pery  meant losing that creative collaboration.  Sometimes it made me feel sad but most of the time I felt good about the work we had done. I posted, to iTunes, my audio tracks that she was working on at the time of her death. They were to be a part of the new project. After that, I stopped writing and recording music and sound. I also stopped updating ARTologyPOD.

Recently though, I have been writing poems and recording sound and music again. And so there’s a reason to do podcasts. I like the format and the freedom and I’m curious about what new things will happen there as a result of its presence in that space. As a stepping off point for multimedia collaboration, it works.

Most of the videos we did are here: https://www.youtube.com/user/TullioDeSantis/videos
Here is one of those multimedia collaborations between Pery and me that started out as a minimal podcast.___

How can we rescue ourselves and each other from the dangerous world we have created?

Our advanced scientific knowledge has produced technologies of tremendous power. We move great objects at stupendous velocities. Our so-called “intelligent machines” perform trillions of calculations in fractions of a second. Everywhere around us our mastery of material processes has refashioned the world of our experience. We have changed the planet and ourselves in ways unimagined by previous generations.

But all this scientific and technological progress has also produced processes that threaten to bring us great harm – harm to ourselves and to our world. Our knowledge turns out to be limited. By focusing our minds on exclusively materialist conceptions of existence, we managed to produce a century of physical and psychological horror on a scale unprecedented in human history.

As we look upon the post-modern landscape, we must ask ourselves, what is it about the way we have conceived of the world and our place in it that has proven so destructive to both our environment and our collective psyche?

Our search for order within the apparent chaos of life has created systems of rigid cultural orthodoxy while maintaining chaos – in the form of unending war, political and economic strife. Even our entertainment media, which we have ostensibly created as havens from the roughness of the real world, are replete with violence and images of brutal inhumanity.

Prodded by atavistic fear we have been impelled to create fortresses of safety and security and yet, each time, we fail to notice until it is too late, we have enclosed the most dangerous thing within the
fortress walls.

We are the most dangerous thing. We have the power to multiply the natural terrors of the world a thousand times over. When we desensitize our neural connections of empathy and feelings of compassion for others, we lose sensitivity and compassion for ourselves as well.

We are learning from our historic failures that we must reformulate our fundamental assumptions about the world and our place within it. The end of the old sciences of separation, reductionism, inflexible logic and absolute certainty leads us ineluctably toward a new science of connectedness, relativity, complexity and possibility.

As we learn to listen more attentively to the beating of our hearts and feel more deeply the breath in our lungs, we come closer to our common humanity. As we begin to ask the right questions, we observe the answers are present within us.

Our minds move inevitably toward the conclusion that instead of what can be accomplished by competition, power and domination, the ultimate purpose and meaning of life can be cultivated by compassion, communication, cooperation and collaboration.

I am writing more. When writing happens after a period of not writing, I think about how that works. The coming and going of words in the midst of a predominantly visual stream. And rather than go on about it, I can refer you to a dialog initiated a few years ago by Philip Hartigan. We talked about, among other things, switching between visual and verbal modes of expression.

metaphor

In a lost attempt to control reality
the cricket crawls under a fallen leaf.
A frog is swallowing it as I pass.
Neurons set connections in my brain.
I make a mental note about not crawling under leaves.

Birds learn flight by flying.
Flying away in autumn and coming back in spring
is how it’s done.
That’s no metaphor.
That’s a fact.

End of the World

On my way home I pass a man.
He stands on the roadside with a sign.

“The wisest man in the world.”

White hair, standing there,
he looks harmless enough.

I’m curious. I stop,
roll down the window
and feel the cold.

“Where you headed?” I say.

“I’m headed to the world’s end.
Looks like I found it.”

“I don’t think so. This is Pennsylvania.
It’s not the end of anything, much less the world.”

“Well, if you let me go along with you for a while, I’ll show you.
I’ll get out then.”

“I have about 30 miles to where I’m going.
I’m not going out of my way.”

“No problem,” he says.

He gets in, shoves the sign in the back seat.
We drive on.

“Your sign says you’re the wisest man inthe world. Is that so?”

“Sure am.”

We drive on.

“Your sign says you’re the wisest man in the world. Is that so?”

“Sure am.”

“OK. What’s it all about, then?”

“It’s the middle of winter. That means we are all dead. And we won’t wake up until spring. We die all the time but we don’t notice it because we all die at the same time,” he says.

“Do we all wake up at the same time then, too?”

“In a way we do. But that’s just a figure of speech.”

I’m thinking my passenger is clever, but he’s not the wisest man in the world.

“That’s it.” he says. “Don’t think another thought. I’m getting out right here.”

I bring my car to a stop. There’s nothing on either side but an old cornfield. He gets out and walks up a slight rise through snow and corn stubs. As he reaches the crest and descends, he seems to disappear.

Just before that he drops a small piece of paper. I have some time. I pull over, park, and follow his frozen footsteps. At the top of the hill I find a folded note. He is gone.

Back home now. I bury his sign and read the note.

I am old and I will die
It is time to come clean.
I woke up at an early age.
I lived a normal life.
So that you believe me
when I reveal all.
I will do that now.

It is not comforting to know.
Hearing this will not set you free.

Freedom is not for us in this life.
We cannot be other than we are.
We pass our time with useless things
As if we live forever.

It is our bodies doing this.
Our minds know very well we die.
But our bodies refuse to hear of it.
Our bodies desire the useless things.

We go about our days in service to these dumb limbs
serving them endless amounts of what they desire
but does not sustain them
making them as comfortable as possible, as they demand it
because they refuse to accept they will die.

Our brilliant minds are filled with petty annoyance.
That’s our lazy bodies talking
Constantly forcing us to confront ourselves in mirrors
So we can see the damage we’re doing.

And while we know love is the answer,
We are faced with the hard fact
We can only be loved to the degree we love ourselves.
We do not love ourselves.

We are our bodies.
And because they are such stupid brutes
They are utterly unlovable.
I am good looking enough to know looks are worth nothing
and wealthy enough to have figured out it has no value.
I am intelligent and know I can never be smart enough.
I see far enough to see an end.

Waking up is like this.
Once it is yours you see right through it.
And you know
Like everything else
It is nothing at all.

The secret of life is life.
We all possess it for a while.
The world ends.
We know it then.
We were already dead.

Fault for the Fall

You’re just being cruel
We did all we could
To pretty things up

Trying our best to clean up after you
But it’s a lost cause and we know it
Tree-loads of leaves are down

Seeds strewn around
Berries rotting on the ground
The sidewalks are all sticky
With odd fruit no one wants

It’s cold
Getting fat is making sense
Already, some of us have given in

Frost and cold fog
Chase away birds
You’re holding summer hostage
Isn’t that enough?

Not only that
When I walked out the door
You threw my hat in the dirt

And your killing spree
Goes on and on
I know for a fact
The doe on the highway
Was innocent

Late in October

Playing the odds of one more warm day
the last katydid is hanging tough
while a mantis prepares for hara-kiri.

Nervous chipmunks pool intelligence.
They’re drawing up secret maps
and hiding them in burrows.

I hear each year they forget
where they’ve stashed them
and so must struggle like the rest of us
blinded by frozen eyelids
stumbling, falling
toward utter hibernation.

Squirrels are in my face
staring right through me
peering for nuts I may have hidden
behind my ears.

I guess I’m no threat now
compared to what’s coming.
The ones who can’t take the pressure
throw themselves in front of cats.

Art of Collaboration

Under the same sun
Beneath oceanic atmosphere
Her breath leaves her lungs
A few seconds pass before it enters his

He says, “The world is…”
“…broken” - she completes it
It is her breath after all
Her mind at work here in her space

He tells her science verifies
The cave painters were mostly women
They compare the length of their fingers

We know we are ruined
It’s an argument we don’t have to have
He says the problem is men
Too much testosterone
We’re destroying ourselves

Addicted to thought
Controlled by belief
Money moves us

This wears us down
Wrecks our thinking
We lose the capacity for empathy
And we are repulsed by our bodies

What are we doing?
What is the message?
“Artists areshamans,” she says.

On the wall – how it is to be human
Living and dying speeding through time
From the cave to the street
How it is to have bodies created by sex
Deep generative parts
Powered by atavistic emotions
We are creations of desire
Needing rescue

We say these things to each other
To make them real

“Artists are shamans.”
“This is why I contacted you.”
“I know.”___

and the next day they show up

deep in your blood knowing it by heart
it has always been yours but now I share your secrets
you are everywhere these barren days
sex-crazed leaving traces on hard ground
on trees
making mistakes

showing yourself is your fatal flaw
you’re giving yourself away and you don’t know that
you cannot help yourself
I understand this behavior in my own flawed heart

sensing me in your space
I sense you in mine
we will both die here

but you are more beautiful
and this is why
you will be the first to die

Forecast

To the mantis on the wall
I’m a shadow cast by clouds
cool stillness
interrupting the warmth
of autumn’s fading sun

Lithe green conscious machine
400 million years of insect evolution
unfazed by my superior intellect

Caught in that moment
of self-doubt
and sensing the presence
of an ancient predator
I retreat and anticipate
the uncanny evolution of empathy

Torn between time and timelessness, I move in and out of dreams.  A soft gray texture suffuses my inner vision. Conscious awareness asserts itself. It penetrates like a torch in a cave. Everything connects.

I comprehend this nebulous space by forming metaphors. A palpable emptiness engulfs the mind. It is as if layers of thought, anxiety, impulse, sensation and emotion are becoming more tenuous and transparent. They drop away and disappear as I dive more deeply within the softening darkness. I am suspended. I contact an inner sense of self - a place of peace.

Much later now, I can sense the brilliant warmth of the morning sun. I strain toward the light but I cannot open my eyes. I fear I will never again be able to awaken. I am lost in some ambiguous space. It hardens in response to my struggle to evade it. Succumbing softens it. I drift inward, toward the ether of dreams.

I hear my voice - “It felt like the last time we would ever talk. I hung up the phone, reached for the book and wrapped it in brown paper. I sent him my copy of “The Book of the Dead.” Then he died.

The bones of my skull seem to slide beneath the skin of my cheek. Fluid pressure pulses behind my eyelids. I can’t keep my mind focused. Consciousness ebbs and flows.

I recognize this as a state between living and dying. But that knowledge disappears as soon as thought takes form. My senses move back and forth like foam on the shoreline. Waves of awareness form a momentary frontal boundary. I cling for a while to the edge of specific thoughts or sensations only to be pulled back through the turbid tide.

Layers of quiet thought, like the enfolding petals of a dark flower, encircle and close one at a time around my conscious mind. I sense an opening, a deep tunnel turning downward. My awareness drifts there as if riding a descending wind.

Faster now, down through a shimmering well of images, I pass successive stages of awareness. I hear my mantra echoing through the chamber. It is soon replaced by the ancient Vedic vibration I recite silently and subconsciously.

I pass the brilliant floral gardens, smooth cobblestone steps and forest paths conjured up while moving through realms of imagination and self-guided visualization. The sound of heartbeats merges with rushing air in a synchronized choreography of blood and breath. I come ever closer to what I comprehend as the center – the space of non-duality and pure awareness.

Silence and emptiness devoid of attributes – devoid even of the attribute of emptiness. There is no thing. It is not opaque, not black. It is not transparent, not white. It is not experienced, it simply…is…and is not.

Unbounded thought expands and generates resonant frequencies. Ethereal reverberations multiply. Layers of vibration create being, harmony, tranquility, and illumination.

Energy increases at the boundaries of infinite and infinitesimal, forming rudimentary matter. A cosmic alphabet of elementary particles, thin plumes of hydrogen, specks of cosmic flotsam organize themselves into larger and larger phenomena along multi-dimensional paths and tidal lines of gravitational tension.

Eons pass. Stellar pyres and their aggregations of orbs spin seas of planetary protein into primeval life. Trees fall in forests. Sounds are heard. Countless births and deaths give rise to increasing instability, improbability, and complexity.

New minds form, minds adrift within the vast ocean of consciousness. Awareness expands to experience the overwhelming pulsations of the surrounding space as living heartbeats.

An angelic human, speaking about a secret language of signs, stops in mid-sentence and smiles at me. We have nothing to say.

In this moment, there are no distinctions between myself and my experience. The only identity I feel is the universe itself beating like a dark star-studded heart in an infinite empty void. And the pulsations I feel are those of my own heart beating. And I am born. I am a child again. I live a billion lives. I die a billion deaths. There is nothing but this moment. There is one consciousness we share. Its nature is our desire.

I know this now. And because you are here with me…you know it too.

I am going back…back inside…back to my body…back to life.

I am born to a new universe.

Insubstantial as an apparition, I arise from a deep sleep. Gazing downward, I glimpse my body. It is not breathing. I am aware of my incorporeal existence but unaware of what awaits me. I decide to allow this dream to unfold without intervention and to simply observe events as they occur___

There is only this – and how it ends. The end is in the thing itself, held for the septillionth time…suspended, crystallized somewhere in the mind.

I open my eyes and close them again. In this moment, I am here. And in this moment I am gone.

“Now you know.”

The couch is cool to my touch. Through the vents, I hear the air conditioner shudder to a dead stop. My heart is beating hard. I want to speak, to call out but my jaw feels like it is welded shut.___

I’m staring into the trunk of the car. My arms are sore. They're covered with scratches. There is a fresh cut near my left elbow. Two roughed-up flashlights are lying on the spare tire. In my right hand I’m holding a frayed nylon line.

“I’ll have to pick up more rope next time we go out on the river. The cave destroyed this one.”

“That was amazing – just down there at the bottom of the hill.”

Back in the car, I tell him how completely surreal this is.

“OK, for one thing, this trip we’re takes place sometime in the early ‘80s.”

“And?”

“And the fact is, it’s 2014 and I’m typing these words on a computer screen. No – it’s after that – someone is reading this. And yet, here we are sitting in the Mustang – a car I don’t own anymore – and we’re driving to the city.

“That means you’re a dead man - like me.”

His smile can mean a thousand things.___

I consider how far he has come in a few short years. His Broome Street studio was dark and cluttered. This new place on Broadway is spectacular in every way – from the plush furniture to the glassed-in offices and entranceway.

After a few minutes he hangs up for the last time. Then he tells two assistants he doesn’t want to be disturbed and joins me on the couch.

“I’m too busy.”

This is how he starts most conversations these days.

“You’re in charge of that, you know.”

“Yeah. It’s just that all these projects right now are important. I know they’re getting in the way of our meetings and I’m sorry about that, but…”

“It’s OK, Keith. The project is…up there in the air somewhere. It’s a mental connection. It goes on. Have you noticed that?”

“I’ve been thinking about when you said you stopped believing in the real world. I talked to Timothy Leary about it. He remembers you.”

“Yeah. In college, I was writing to Richard Alpert – Baba Ram Dass. He worked with Leary at Harvard and then Millbrook. Anyway, through Alpert, I got in touch with Leary and eventually got him to visit Gettysburg College. He gave a talk and debated another professor. We were this group of beatniks and hippies gathered around in front. After the lecture, he came outside and joined us on the lawn. People were tripping – it was a beautiful day. The other students acted like a flying saucer had landed. After that, I saw him again in San Francisco – Golden Gate Park during the Summer of Love.”

“Cool. I think you’re right about the real world.”

“Yeah. You have to live in it but there’s no reason to believe in it. It’s the last religion. Even atheists believe in the real world.”

“It always seemed to me that we make up our own reality as we go. Nobody notices.”

“Until it gets strange or you’re dreaming…or dying.”

“When I died it was unreal. Then I thought…but it’s natural.”

I am looking into his eyes, yet he is no longer here.

A Jamaican street kid who’s been blowing smoke rings into the ceiling fan looks over and smiles.

“See a ghost, mon?”

Gold encircling his neck and a glint in his eye are my last memories.

An eternity later, a young Latino man offers me a Coke.

I relax into the soft leather couch.___

I am able to see things from both inside and outside of the dream. Scenes shift. The velocity of consciousness quickens. Optical passageways illuminate the dark mind-space within me. Cool air and hot blood collide in my lungs. Drumbeats sound in my chest. I am conscious within a pulsating chamber of flesh.

I see the searing suns of the Milky Way collapse into a vortex of interstellar emptiness and in the same instant I see a cosmos emerge from energetic emptiness.

A high-pitched sound reverberates. I do not hear it so much as feel it on the periphery of my awareness. Soon, it’s painful and overwhelming.

Still reluctant, I wake up and answer the phone.

“I crashed man. I’ve been asleep since I got home.

“Oh, too bad. William Burroughs invited me to dinner. I tried to get hold of you. He has this amazing mind… We talked about art and writing and philosophy. You should have been there.”

“That’s cool, thanks for thinking of me, Keith. I always thought his stuff was kind of negative.”

“He’s a sweet man, really kind. He was so nice to me. I felt an instant bond with him. His work is just…you know…his work. I think he’s trying to wake people up.”

“No doubt. So yeah, man, that was a strange trip today, wasn’t it?”

“What happened?”

“When we drove up here…all of that…leaving the car on the side of the road… the cave.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve been in town for the last week. So have you - as far as I know. Are you OK?”

“Uh, yeah, I’m OK. Let’s get together soon. I want to talk about the project.”

“I’m going to Europe in a couple of days. Can you stop over tomorrow?”

“Sure. In the afternoon?”

“Yeah. I’ll tell Julia you’re coming over.”

“OK. See you then.”

Again…this feeling of strangeness, unreality…

I hang up the phone and am overcome with confusion. In an effort to feel in control, I trace sequentially through my memory of the day’s events. The fact that there is a sequence – or that I am convinced I can recall a continuous chain of memory linking one thing to the next – doesn’t change the sense of disorientation I feel about each bizarre occurrence. I’m left with the knowledge that this has happened to me many times before and that it continues.

I look up for a moment. The dark-haired girl in the building across the alley is undressing again. About a month after I moved in she started leaving the shades up all the time. Youthful and curvaceous, she is as beautiful as a girl in the window could possibly be. She moves like a dancer until her liquid eyes catch a fleeting glimpse of mine.

Looking away, I turn toward the screen and remember my dreams.___

I say goodbye and drive through the Lower East Side up to West 20th. There’s a space open in front of the precinct station - a safe place. I like looking out the window to see the Mustang in one piece down there.

In the loft, reviewing the day before falling off to sleep, I am burdened and inspired. Something is happening - moving me with insistent force.

Naked between gray sheets, I await my descent into the dream cave. The enfolding layers of linen feel like soft echoes of the smooth boulders surrounding that cavern at the bottom of the hill.

Behind my eyelids inner sight continues. Entoptic visions pulse with the regularity of ocean waves. I see phosphenes, staccato flashes, random spots of gold and networked streaks of shiny blue and green. Shape-shifting colors move like protozoan life.

There are spaces between the shapes. I make a conscious effort to send my imagination out to explore this evolving mindscape. Pear-green tubes sprout prickly spikes. finely detailed rosettes and ultraviolet plumes feather out through a fine mist. I drift toward an incandescent horizon.

As surely as dark cumulonimbus presage thunderstorms, these events bring awareness of approaching dreams.___

A pearl of clear water appears before my eyes - one of the occasional droplets that splash down cave walls to form rivulets and ripples made of stone.

After hundreds of years the rivulets cut channels in the limestone. After thousands of years the cave is deeply rutted with grooves. Sometimes the drops fall directly downward and deposit their microscopic loads of dissolved stone until small mineral piles grow straight up against gravity. The cave floor is alive with them - hardened gardens of ever-growing forms.

I am transfixed by this single droplet that has stopped like a dead man’s heart. I can see the entire cave reflected complete within it. The deeper I look into the tiny sphere the more I see - atavistic visions of ancient times, the first hand print on a cave wall, the long history of our species, an intelligent world – the end of the universe. I see the multicolor pointillist patterns of my art commingled with his sublimely ancient and futuristic imagery. I see everything at once.

Interconnected chambers of this cavernous place are repeated within the clear surface of the orb. The maze of tunnels is dense, yet I traverse each one in the blink of an eye. Each passage leads back to this oceanic droplet. It grows in size threatening to engulf me.

I call out to him.

The answer comes from within, “This is a dream. Just wake up.”

I can't move…my jaw feels like it weighs ten-thousand pounds. No sound emerges from my open throat. I catch sight of him again – a reflection in a sphere. I raise my eyes and he is back. Alive again but not for long. In that moment I can see - he is dying.

A pearl of clear water appears before my eyes - it is not like the droplets that splash down cave walls to form rivulets and ripples made of stone.

This droplet is not like those at all. I look up to trace its trajectory. It did not fall from the ceiling like the other drops.

It is moving slowly, inexorably down his cheek.___

The boundaries that used to separate one type of awareness from another have disappeared. At some point in this waking dream I begin to see all people, places and times, all forms of life and states of consciousness are present simultaneously – in an infinite moment, called “my life”.

“This trip…is all there is.”

The rest of his words are drowned out by an onrush of cold air. I am swept into a vortex. Looking down to ground myself – I fix my eyes upon a single blue-green stone in an attempt to stabilize my field of vision. But I cannot focus.

Instead, I am gazing into a virtual tunnel of images. They form a shimmering cone of three-dimensional scenes stretched out to great length. Each one shows a world related in some way to this place.

Starting out as pastoral landscapes, each leads from bright blue sky toward a darkening funnel of clouds far in the distance.

I scan every vista, searching for clues. They begin as vignettes, memories – moments I can identify. In one, I see myself as a child walking the path to Crystal Cave – a huge underground cavern near Kutztown and a commercial attraction. Walking with my parents, seeing things from a child’s-eye view, I can hear the muffled voices of other families behind me.

Descending into the ancient cavern, the summer heat quickly gives way to a chill as I descend for my first journey inside the planet. Everywhere around me, uncanny configurations of stalactites and stalagmites glisten in the artificial light. I have revisited this alien place over and over again in my dreams. It has become a familiar part of my mental landscape. I am not surprised to see it now.

Another scene springs up – the weather is crisp and autumnal. The place before me is Temple Cave – a rough boulder-bound series of subterranean cracks and crevasses I explored as a teenager. Known only locally, the entrance is a mere slit between rocks on a hidden hillside. As I move forward between the stones I can feel the humid atmosphere within. Once inside, there are yards of precipitous ledges to negotiate in the dark, before one can enter a space large enough to even turn around.

These visions coexist in my mind. I see them all at once. And yet, I can travel through each one individually, move around and explore. It is an experience of simultaneity – a hall of mirrors but each reflects a different time and place.

Next, I experience a night in late summer. I am with a group of amateur spelunkers – friends who have invited a few of us to explore a new cavern they’ve discovered just south of Gettysburg. The characteristic shift from the external world to the bowels of the earth is more gradual, as the entrance here is larger. The damp green moss lining the slippery clay walls at the cave mouth disappears into the rough and rugged passageway within.

After ten yards or so, there is a small opening in the stone floor. One-by-one we lower ourselves into the earth. Holding tightly to a nylon line, I slide down through a long rock-edged tunnel barely wider than my shoulders and I am blinded by utter blackness.

Even as these spaces engulf me with their overwhelming presence, I sense us both still at rest, lying on the field of grass from which we will awaken later in the day. Above, the constellations of late-summer shine like laser beams from behind a midnight sky.

These ever-changing scenes appear solid and palpable, yet they are strangely transparent. They seem to rotate within my cone of vision, each one juxtaposed upon the other. It is as if I am enclosed inside a vast crystalline structure, sphere upon sphere, encasing the myriad moments of my life as internal reflections within some incomprehensible mind. And in that mind my dreams are real.___

I wake up on the grass. A brilliant sun is in the eastern sky. Allover patterns remain in my eyes and over everything I see. I feel a cool mist upon my face and hands. It sparkles everywhere in this green valley.

He is beside me, sleeping still. I recall only the tropical place and the moment we silently agreed to revisit the cave. My mind strains to make sense of what I am experiencing.

He stirs.

“Keith.”

“Art…I guess we fell asleep.”

Smiling, he looks around and says it is morning and we must have slept all night. I find the thought strangely soothing. The way he acts and the clarity of his statements create a sense of reality, of normalcy, in me.

And then, I feel a sense of panic.

And then, I feel a sense of panic.

“Oh man. That means the car was on the side of the road all night. I didn't lock it when we stopped!"

He grins as I run back through the brightening woods to check. There, about 10-feet off the roadway I see the copper color of the Mustang and feel calm. I reach the car. It is shining, studded with dewdrops.

He has followed me back here.

“Everything’s OK, right?”

“Yeah, no problem.”

“So let’s go check out the cave,” he says.

My tongue feels so thick I can barely speak. The sound of each faltering word echoes in my head.

“Keith. Do you know what’s going on? What kind of reality is this, man? Are you really here?

“Why does all that still matter to you, Art?”

I see him standing just a few feet in front of me yet he speaks as a disembodied voice.

“Just stop trying to make sense of everything."

I can't let it go.  "Can we just talk about this for a minute?”

“We’ve been talking about it for hours. Look at the tape.”

There, on the hood of the car, is a micro-cassette player. The tape is pegged at the stop position with the full 90 minutes of recording time expended. He tells me that the tape ran out over an hour ago.

The dew has disappeared and the mid afternoon sun is on our backs. I have no idea what has occurred in the past hours. This analog tape recorder is from the 1980s. It is the little Panasonic I used to record our dialogs. But that was thirty years ago. I use a digital recorder, not this ancient relic.

“…this ancient relic…” I hear the words repeated as echoing sounds in my head. The words collide, reverberate and…slow…down. Time stops.

Shifting memories swirl through me. I experience, in an instant, a concatenation of moments, once discrete, separated by decades, but flooding me in a tide of recall. I strain to arrange them in some sequence so that I may study them, see them in some chain of causality – to have something make sense.

“Wait a minute. Listen. We’re on our way back to the city, right? You want me to pullover. We stop, park on the side of the road, and stand by that fence over there. I look at you and see you looking back at me. OK? After that though, it’s just flashes, scenes in my mind. Like a dream. And anyway…this trip…the whole thing - it happened a long time ago.”

He does not respond. For an instant, he stands silent, as if frozen in place. Then, from somewhere else, I hear his voice as though it is coming toward me fast and from a great distance.

“This trip…is all there is.”___

Aloft in a dream, I scan the expanse below – windswept sand in scalloped patterns snaking sideways mirrors my movements. The hypnotic undulations induce uneasiness, vertigo. Soon I am spinning wildly, uncontrollably. I repeat the phrase that has served me throughout my life, “This is a dream. This is a dream.” but it does not calm me. I am aware I am dreaming but I am unable to steady myself.

My eyes are moist. I am swept up in a maelstrom of emotion. Weeping now, I reach up to wipe away the tears. Upon withdrawing my hands I see blood-red. I am bleeding from my eyes!

My tongue swells. I am drifting in and out of consciousness and I can feel myself falling earthward. A cocoon-like darkness engulfs me and stifles my onrushing panic. Soothed, I understand I have achieved a threshold – a dream within a dream.

My tongue swells. I am drifting in and out of consciousness and I can feel myself falling earthward. A cocoon-like darkness engulfs me and stifles my onrushing panic. Soothed, I understand I have achieved a threshold – a dream within a dream.

Looking down at the sun-bleached desert, I come upon a vast blue-black crescent that cuts directly across my view of the landscape. All movement stops and for a moment I am poised above the dark arc. One half of my body is in the area of the light and the other half in darkness.

An instant later and I am spinning above the terminator making countless transitions from day to night. On the light side, I can see the sun speeding by, completing hundreds, thousands of iterations from west to east. In the darkness the stars move in their paths at an ever-accelerating pace.

After a desperate effort to fix my gaze on something stable, I locate Polaris. Rapidly, it traces a full circle around the dome of the universe. The idea of precession of the equinoxes occurs to me and I calculate a passage of twenty-four thousand years.

As the thought of this enormous number takes hold of my mind, I start to decelerate. Soon I am hovering again above the dividing arc. The sun, the stars, the moon, and planets take their places in the new epoch. Rushing forward now, I feel the cool dry air of this nocturnal space – so very different from the tropical atmosphere from which this dream was spawned.

Miles later, in the star-flecked darkness, I find myself once more moving toward high ground. This time though, the higher I climb the colder I feel. Ahead, near the side of a bare hill, I see another entrance to still another cave. I hear my thoughts: “But I’m still inside the cavern on the warm plateau. Is an exit up ahead or another entrance?”

The hillside is split before me. Before I can consider the slim dimensions of the aperture, I am through. This is no exit. I am in a new chamber, surrounded by wet rock walls, smooth and shining. Rippling reflections from pools of water ricochet around the perimeter and I catch quick glimpses of dripping stalactites, ceiling, and walls.

And suddenly – without warning – I awaken. The sheet I kicked down at bedtime is now wrapped tightly around my torso. It is too sheer to have warmed me in this chilled bedroom. The air conditioner is stuck – pumping out cold air. The room temperature reads 55 degrees. Out into the hall, I press the reset button. The machine shudders to a halt, the fan stops, and the unit falls silent. Grabbing a towel to wrap around me, I walk out on the balcony into the damp heat of the island at night.___

The cave entrance is at the summit of an insurmountable highland. I am far below, moving within a tropical forest. My eyes trace the shapes of foreign alphabets among stringy vines, moss covered branches, and sharp palm fronds. I’m scanning the vegetation for each patch of radiance that manages to pierce the canopy.

Soon though, I sense light throughout my entire being and feel myself moving more quickly. My feet are barely touching the ground. The jungle seems to clear slightly. More light shines through and I am surrounded by a warming wind.

A flurry of butterflies circles my perimeter and swirls upward in airy gyres. The airborne Monarchs, Clippers, Sulphers, Julias, and Swallowtails create a vacuum in which I feel myself lifted up and through the verdant landscape. Joyfully, I hear myself repeating the phrase, “I’m flying!”

Soaring toward the distant plateau, my confidence builds until I am able to maneuver easily. Before me lies an ancient cavern. The sharp crack of the cave mouth is too slim, yet I seem to slide in with ease. And instead of the utter darkness I had anticipated, the space before me is endless, bright, and open.

In the far distance, a gateway appears, comprised of two pillars of flowering cactus rising a hundred feet or more into the air and covered by a floral arch. The sight of it rushing toward me stuns me into the sudden realization that I am free to let go, to explore, to fly ever farther through this infinite moment…___

Insubstantially as an apparition, I arise from a deep sleep. Gazing downward, I glimpse my body. It is not breathing. I am aware of my incorporeal existence but unaware of what awaits me. I decide to allow this dream to unfold without intervention and to simply observe events as they occur.

With curiosity and anticipation, I am borne upward from a coal black chamber. Though I’m in a roomful of animals whose attention is focused upon me, I feel calm and have no fear. They are kept at bay by the blaze of an unseen fire that seems to emanate from my skin.

I float above the beasts, transported through brilliant architectural structures suffused with beams of light. Moving throughout the maze of lambent passageways and tunnels, there is time to reflect upon my situation. Slowly it becomes clear - from utter emptiness and entombment to this liberating sense of moving upward and outward from what must have been a burial chamber – this is my death. The thought that I have died is curiously devoid of emotion. It is simply a way of describing this particular state of being.

Quickly now, the brilliance of the surrounding light increases and I am bathed in the warmth and luminance of the sun. I float freely in a transparent space, content in the knowledge that I have arrived at an end and also that I am at the beginning of a series of infinite journeys.

The notion of being lucid and aware in my dream and making a conscious decision not to control its direction is exhilarating. It allows me to proceed through a dream world simply observing what happens next. I have a heightened sense of anticipation for what lies ahead.___
