I've listened to "Field of Reeds" the new These New Puritans album about 4 times now; not sure what to say about the album, it's very different. However I will say "V (Island Song)" is my favorite track, and it's quite stunning. The melody is hypnotic, I can't get enough of it. #music

Through Chris' ingenuity our flight was changed from American Airlines to an AirFrance AirBus (double decker plane) and its a direct flight, arriving 2 hours earlier, and through a random coincidence we are flying with some friends I knew from a long time ago.

Ann Romney's speech was weak, and she has no gift for politics; "she seemed like a grinning prom queen basking in the school body's adulation." The media's praise of it is thinly veiled bullshit, no honest wonk could say it was exceptional.
Chris Christie's speech on the other hand, though it was full of contradictions, and too extreme in its partisan division, was delivered rather well and does position him well for 2016.

Reading a history of the Fourth French Republic called "As France Goes" published in 1957. It's a bit too polemic in it's portrayal of the Communist party for my taste, typical cold war red scare rhetoric, however this line caught my attention as summing up our present national politics:
"The deputies of the Assembly had become agents of parties rather than representatives of constituencies. [...] It was a result of the growth of strong and disciplined parties"

As usual Mr. Sandifer nails it with this commentary. This is just awesome:
"The Daleks, then, are clearly a metatextual element here. They are attacking the Doctor in a space that does not make a lot of sense within the context of his supposed fictional biography, but that makes considerable sense within his thematic biography. To do so they must be taken to be at least partially aware of this narrative. And fair enough - if they're the arch enemies of the Doctor then they ought to be entitled to at least as much narrative awareness as he is."
