Although many dogwood blooms are turning brown, I found this blossom yesterday in Yosemite National Park while working with a private student.
This image is part of my ongoing Impressions of Light project, for which I have made many new images this spring season. Now all I need is some time to process and edit them all and so many other new photographs.
When I was in high school, I took art classes every semester. I think that there is still a latent painter in me... maybe I should have become one!

Here is a new image taken a couple of weeks ago during a private workshop session. It was an incredible morning, obviously, with strange lighting with distinctly different tones in the clouds. This is one of many "keepers," and I had trouble picking which to show you. More to come.

I am booked with private sessions during May, but now is the time to book for summer dates, and especially for the very busy autumn color season which is mid-October to early November.
Important Note: I have increased my day rate for summer sessions to $800 for a full day since the days are so long! Summer rate applies from June 1 through September 1.
If you have any questions, please message me or contact me through my Contact website page. The link below contains much detail.
Reduced rates are available to small groups, so gather some photo buddies together and meet me in Yosemite!

I am slowing editing and processing images from last week, and I have three more private sessions this week, starting tomorrow. Here is a waterfall detail from Yosemite. I chose to isolate the whitest area of water for a high key effect.
BTW, has anyone noticed any corn lily leaves coming up along the Glacier Point Road?

I am ready for the dogwood and waterfall in Yosemite! Here is a 4x5 film image made in 1990. My tripod was set up on the top of my van, with the exposure of about 20 seconds timed in between the swaying of my camera as vehicles passed on the road just a few feet away... Many of my exposures were not sharp enough, but I persevered to get this one!

Proposed Changes to Yosemite’s El Capitan Meadow
I know many of you have a close connection with Yosemite, so I thought you would want to know about some proposed changes to El Capitan Meadow. In most of the proposed alternatives for the park service's Merced River Draft Management plan, fencing and signs would be installed to keep visitors from trampling the meadow.
John Sexton wrote a thoughtful post on Facebook about this issue, which I recommend reading.

El Capitan Meadow has long been a favorite spot for photographers in Yosemite. Ansel Adams made his Oak Tree, Snowstorm photograph from there. Galen Rowell captured one of his most famous images, Clearing Storm Over El Capitan, from this meadow. John posted one of his wonderful p... more »

What is your definition of Photo Impressionism? I am curious to know as it is a difficult idea to pin down in words let alone visually. From my dictionary below:
Impressionism:
a style or movement in painting originating in France in the 1860s, characterized by a concern with depicting the visual impression of the moment, esp. in terms of the shifting effect of light and color.
• a literary or artistic style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve accurate depiction.

This morning I found this video interview with Ansel Adams in 1983, one year before his passing in 1984. I worked at The Ansel Adams Gallery at that time. That was also the year Ansel approved my photographs for sale in the Gallery. I was lucky to have know him...
Enjoy and share! Well worth the time.

"After Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter, the third pillar of conservation photography in the 20th century was Philip Hyde (1921-2006). In fact, it can be argued that Philip Hyde was more instrumental in this role than his two more famous counterparts, and that it was precisely for that reason that he is less known. A quiet and humble giant, living a simple life out of the spotlight, he always felt that his own art was secondary to nature’s beauty and fragility, to the environmental campaigns he participated in – more numerous and successful than any other phot... more »

The new issue of "Light It" magazine for the iPad is now available!
Lots of cool stuff in this issue (our biggest issue yet), including a feature on lighting action sports, and my "Lighting Recipes" column on mixing flash with ambient light (and a bunch more). Android version update: I wish I had more news, but I don't. We do have a beta version up and running (I posted a video of RC showing it), but it's still so buggy we can't release it. I know this is the same story you've heard for a while now, but I'm not the App developer, I'm their client, and like you I'm very anxious to get the Android version released (if for nothing more than to change the conversation from "Where's the Android version?". Believe me, when it's ready, we'll release it. For those of you with iPads, hope you enjoy the latest issue. Cheers,... more »

Here is a new image I made yesterday afternoon on my back patio. My retaining wall is in late afternoon light, and provides the intense, reflected color. I used my Canon 90mm Tilt Shift, using both the Tilt and Shift functions. To capture this reflection and shapes of the stones, the camera angle needed to be low, so the lens was tilted forward for full sharpness from front to back. The Shift function was used to create three, horizontal overlapping frames, that were stitched together in Adobe Photoshop to create the panoramic-shaped image.
Enjoy, share, and give me your feedback! Personally, I am thrilled with it!

I had a wonderful day with a private student in Yosemite last week. There were no clouds, no interesting weather, but the ice was fabulous. I helped Shauna find simple but clean designs within all the chaos of patterns. There is always something of profound beauty to photograph in Yosemite.
