LONE SIGNAL
At Lone Signal, we believe that crowdsourcing messaging to extraterrestrial intelligence (METI) is the ideal approach to establishing a stable, cohesive, and well-resourced interstellar beacon on Earth.
We invite you to join us in the first collective and continuous METI experiment in human history. Lone Signal allows anyone with Internet access to compose and transmit messages to strategically selected stellar systems.

Battle of Blair Mountain
The Battle of Blair Mountain was one of the largest civil uprisings in United States history and the largest armed rebellion since the American Civil War. For five days in late August and early September 1921, in Logan County, West Virginia, some 10,000 armed coal miners confronted 3,000 lawmen and strikebreakers, called the Logan Defenders, who were backed by coal mine operators during an attempt by the miners to unionize the southwestern West Virginia coalfields. The battle ended after approximately one million rounds were fired, and the United States Army intervened by presidential order.

Before making it to the big time behind the golden EIB microphone, Rush Limbaugh worked in Pittsburgh. As Jeff Christie, Rush was first at WIXZ 1360, then in 1972 joining KQV when Jim Quinn left for Buffalo. Today Rush is on more than 600 radio stations. Norm Woodruff pulled the strings that got Rush into KFBK, which was where he was working when he met Ed McLaughlin. Norm gave Rush that last chance (he had been fired a number of times and fallen into obscurity while working in baseball). Norm taught Rush how to dress for success and presented him to KFBK at a key moment -- upon the firing of Morton Downey. Arkush says Rush fails to give Woodruff his just credit for his involvement in Rush's success, which if it ever does come will have to come posthomolously. Woodruff died in the mid 1980's of AIDS. He was gay.
In spite of the sexual preference of his mentor, and in spite of having ... more »

This week we observed “positive developments” regarding the future budget of NASA’s Planetary Science division.
The US Senate announced a bill that proposes a budget for the rest of 2013, and within it, there are specific mentions for Planetary Sciences. This bill proposes restoring $223 million, virtually a complete reversal of last year’s cuts to the program. Those cuts prevented potential missions to Europa, while slowing the pace of small missions to other planets, including Mars. These were the largest cuts the program had seen in over 30 years.
With restorations to the budget, we would have much to look forward to in the coming years. An increased number of small missions, further developments on Mars, and developments for a Europa mission are all possible outcomes of more steps towards a healthy NASA budget.
A lot can happen before this bill is passed, however.... more »

Our use of Social Media, it seems, has allowed us to be consumed by constant updates of people on our friends list. We have begun looking at life as entertainment.
According to a survey released in April by CareerBuilder, LLC, nearly 2 in 5 companies use social networking sites to research job candidates. And a March survey from Eurocom Worldwide shows that 1 in 5 technology industry executives admit to rejecting an applicant based on his or her social media profile.Somebody might say, “It’s my {insert social network name here} I can post what I want!” Which is true but you also have to keep in mind that although you have the control over what you share on the internet, you don’t have control over how it is perceived or translated in the workforce. But again I say this depends on the type of job you are looking for and the career you want to have someday.
