European Photo192,825Come join +European Photo  #EuropeanPhoto  and +Charles Lupica +Janusz Brakoniecki +Jean-Louis LAURENCE +Manuella Betaille +Manuel Votta +Michael Muraz and +Susanne Ramharter for our first event.  Please tag your images with #EuropeanAutumn  and #EuropeanPhotography  - no other tag is needed but you can mention one or more curators if you like. This event is for sharing images that say "autumn in Europe" or "Autumn festival".  In Europe many of the biggest festivals of the year take place in September, October, and Novemeber.  In September and October there are many "harvest festivals" such as the Fete des Vendanges in Neuchatel Switzerlland or perhaps you went to the Octoberfest in Germany?  Both Europa Parc and Disneyland Paris put on extensive Halloween themes.  So this weekend, Friday to Sunday, pleass join our event and share with us your images of autumn in Europe.  We would especially like to see images that show autumn in classic European cites or landscapes, like this image of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lavaux, Switzerland. Meanwhile in Rome

I havn't been posting much lately. Sorry about that: I had pretty busy days and I am  getting ready now to prepare for some conferences coming up in the second half of May all in in different places of Europe, from the South of Italy to The Netherlands.

Meanwhile, this is what I saw the other night in Rome. Many thanks M(arcus) Agrippa: this still makes us happy

Cool Eiffel

As you might have read, I am still experimenting with the Sony Alpha 6000 kit lens (hmmm). I never did long exposure, so provided a warm coat and a decent location :-) I would give it  shot. The results are good, although I forgot how the crop sensors are:  there are a few hot spots here and there. Nothing unfixable in post, of course but it's a bit of a pain. Also, the lens produces a very strong vignetting which have to be either cropped or corrected with a lens correction algorithm that crops some of the edges away.

The controls are very slow for me, although the menu is well done it still takes you forever to move (the screen is not touch screen and the dials are quite small). But still,  the camera fits in the pocket so, all in all I am alright traveling with it.

Indoor dim light Sony A6000 test

I am still doing some test shots with the Sony Alpha 6000 (A6000). While I find it very difficult to frame subjects without a direct view through the lens, the ability to move the display around helps reaching some creative perspective. The ISO in low light reaches a good compromise, this shot being ISO500 in very dim light. The whole operation of setting exposure in manual mode feels like it is taking ages compared to my usual DSLR, so I guess I just need a bit more practice.

Given the lens I am using (16-50mm f/3.5-5.6) any attempt with portraits makes me want to shut the camera down quicker than the time it takes to set it up and reach for my mobile phone instead :-)

This photo is indoor, dim light at 22mm 0.6/sec f/5.6 ISO 500

While I realize this isn't much of a photograph, I took this to experiment with some of the settings of a newly purchased mirrorless camera. It's a relatively inexpensive Sony Alpha 6000 of which I heard good things. My first experience with mirrorless cameras started a couple of years ago and at that time I was quite unsatisfied with pretty much everything (back than it was a Samsung NX). The reason why I chose a Sony camera over a probably better Fujifilm is for the ability to shooting video at a decent quality, both in studio and location with important functions such as peak focus and zebra lines, while still retaining decent quality in still images. We'll see how it goes, so far the kit lens attached, which is a 16-50mm (3.5.-5.0) isn't doing much for me... The rest will be discovered in the coming days!

This is half real

I have posted a similar scenery in color a while back. The photo is taken in Riva del Garda, near the Italian city of Trento, it's a place where the Alps fall straight into the Garda Lake.

While processing this shot I had a sense of dream and escape which I wanted to emphasize even more like this.
