Scientists have discovered water that has been trapped in rock for more than a billion years. The water might contain microbes that evolved independently from the surface world, and it's a finding that gives new hope to the search for life on other planets.

The water samples came from holes drilled by gold miners near the small town of Timmins, Ontario, about 350 miles north of Toronto. Deep in the Canadian bedrock, miners drill holes and collect samples. Sometimes they hit pay dirt; sometimes they hit water, which seeps out from tiny crevices in the rock.

Recently, a team of scientists (who had been investigating water samples from other mines) approached the miners and asked them for fluid from newly-drilled boreholes.

Greg Holland, a geochemist at Lancaster University in England, and his colleagues wanted to know just how long that fluid had been trapped in the rock.... more »

How to find Trending Hashtags

So Google slapped some new lipstick on G+. One of the additions to the #NewLook  was better hashtag use. You'll now see one in the top right hand side of a post (you don't even HAVE to use the # sound, it'll do it automagically). If you thought that was cool but then wondered "Ok but where in the hell did the Trending section go?" just open your left sidebar (hover your mouse over there or just hit ← on your keyboard and it'll pop up) and click What's Hot. You'll see the list of what's trending on the right hand side.

Google and NASA buying $15m quantum computer that can try all possible solutions at the same time and then select the best.

Google wants to use it to find out how quantum computing might advance techniques of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and voice recognition (welcome Skynet... we've been waiting for you). 

Nasa and Google's benchmarks showed that in one case it took less than half a second to do something that took conventional software 30 minutes.

"A classic example of one of these "combinatorial optimisation" problems is that of the travelling sales rep, who needs to visit several cities in one day, and wants to know the shortest path that connects them all together in order to minimise their mileage."

Does anyone know how to revert google plus back to how it was before? The new and improved POS layout seems like it was designed by an idiot.  

- Go to your home page
- Click "More" on top
- Scroll all the way to the bottom
- two icons choose the left one. 

To fix the profile page

Accessibility
[x] Change the presentation of some pages to work better with screen readers and other accessibility tools.

Before everyone starts whining about the new layout, follow these simple instructions:

1) Go to the top of the screen.
2) Click on More.
3) Click on the "Stream Layout" option on the right.

Now it should look more like how you expect/want.  If you hate both options so passionately that you're willing to sound like everyone on Facebook does every couple of weeks, you are free to complain now.
