"Mount Roraima, Venezuela" by Uwe George (National Geographic)

The majestic Mount Roraima is the highest mountain in the Pacaraima Mountains.

Roraima lies on the three borders of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. The mountain is part of Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angel Falls is also part of this beautiful park.

Mount Roraima’s highest point is Maverick Rock at 2,810 meters (9,219 feet), and the whole of Mount Roraima’s fairly flat top surface area is surrounded by 400+ meter (1,312+ feet) high sheer cliffs.

It can be climbed, though all routes besides the Paraitepui route require technical climbing gear. Visitors can get a stunning view of Mount Roraima and the greater Canaima National Park from a memorable helicopter ride.

The Tunnel Of Love

Klevan is an urban-type settlement in the Rivne Raion of Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine. Its population is 7,470 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. Klevan is accessed via the T1B17 and H22 roads, and is located 28.3 km northwest of Rivne and 50.4 kilometres southeast of Lutsk along the H22. Klevan lies on the Stubla River.

There’s a real place in the Ukraine that looks like this. This beautiful train tunnel filled with greenery is located in Kleven, Ukraine. Locals call it the “Tunnel of Love” and it’s beautiful even when it’s not all green.

Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan

We sail through endless skies,
Stars shine like eyes,
the black night sighs

The moon in silver dreams
falls down in beams,
Light of the night

The earth, a purple blaze
of sapphire haze in orbit always

While down below the trees,
bathed in cool breeze,
Silver starlight breaks down from night

And so we pass on by
the crimson eye
of great god Mars

As we travel the universe...

An Albino Killer Whale!

[Link to NatGeo: http://tinyurl.com/7mu748o ]

A fascinating sighting took place over the Bering Ocean, in Russia. I hope we're able to get some underwater pictures of "Iceberg", the white killer whale:

"Scientists were studying acoustic and social interactions among whales and dolphins off the North Pacific's Commander Islands (map) when the team noticed a six-foot-tall (nearly two-meter-tall) white dorsal fin jutting above the waves—hence the whale's new name: Iceberg.
Though Iceberg's moniker is new, he may be the same killer whale scientists spotted in 2000 and 2008 in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, Holly Fearnbach, a research biologist at the University of Aberdeen in the U.K., said by email.

For one thing, Iceberg and the previously seen whales look very similar, Fearnbach said.more »

Majestic Sunrise from the Summit of Mount Fuji by Spreng Ben

Flickr Source: [ http://goo.gl/Evjhi ]

In the Photographer's words:

"Are 11 hours of hiking through the night worth this photo?

I really asked myself this question as I stood at the summit of Fuji-San in Tokyo, Japan. Me and three friends started around 8 pm at the bottom of the volcano. We hiked up the whole night until we arrived at the summit around 5 pm. Gasping for air I stood there and watched the spectacular sunrise above the pacific.

I can tell you the sunrise was majestic and definitely worth the hike! The bad thing was the descent. We arrived in a really aggressive mood around 14 pm at the bottom. You can or cannot imagine the scene.

The whole night there was the stress of hiking and after you got the present of seeing the sunrise you still have to... more »

Ludwig Van Beethoven
Piano Sonata No.4 in E flat - IV: Rondó: Poco Allegretto e grazioso.

The last movement of his 4th Sonata depicts both tranquility and a passionate burst of anger/introspection (2:20 mark). From total serenity to a profound state of awareness. Beethoven solves the conflict by reaching a point of absolute balance (6:48 mark) between the main vibrant theme and the upbeat nature of the minor key section.

The sweat coming out of Daniel's face only adds up to the dramatic nature of the piece. A fantastic rendition!

Piano: Daniel Barenboim

Hidrophobic nanocoating a.k.a. "NeverWet"

Ready for some new nanotech that's just about to reach your home? The guys at Ross Technology Corp. created a silicon-based spray-on coating that repels water and heavy oils. They also assure that any surface protected by this coating won't get any bacteria at all.

One of the scientists sprayed his own iPhone with the coating, submerged it for 30 minutes underwater and it was good to go afterwards, no damage taken.

I remember having seen similar tech some years ago in a documentary, but at that time the stuff had just been recently discovered. It didn't take too long for it to hit the shelves!

The product will be available from this year onwards.

Shrinking data storage to the atomic level
[ http://www.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=81745 ]

IBM researched for years a way to cut down the data storage size to the smallest theorethical limit we have to this day, and they succeded.

Even though the conditions for the experiment were extreme (close to absloute zero temperatures) "the research team said that a similar effect can be accomplished at standard room temperature, with as little as 150 atoms."

1 bit of information can now be stored in 12 atoms. 1 byte (8 bits) requires 92 atoms. To put things in perspective: Current technology requires around 1 million atoms to store 1 single bit. We're speaking orders of magnitude shrinkage here.

As much as I'm excited about this technology it's also a given fact that this won't reach our homes at reasonable prices for... more »

I just love this section of Beethoven's 4th Piano Sonata (click to jump straight into the action):

Beethoven Piano Sonata #4 In E Flat , Op. 7, No. 4 - 3. Allegro by Daniel Barenboim

Corresponds to the 3rd movement, performed by Daniel Baremboim. Of course the whole Sonata is an impecable work, but just felt like sharing one of those Beethovenesque bursts of energy soaked in darkness.

Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky
"Violin Concerto in D major Op.35" - Allegro moderato (1/2)
(Complete set of links at the end of this post)

Violin: Anne-Sophie Mutter

Written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, is one of the best known of all violin concertos. It is also considered to be among the most technically difficult works for violin.

The piece was written in Clarens, a Swiss resort on the shores of Lake Geneva, where Tchaikovsky had gone to recover from the depression brought on by his disastrous marriage to Antonina Miliukova. Tchaikovsky was joined there by his composition pupil, the violinist Iosif Kotek, who had been in Berlin for violin studies with Joseph Joachim. The two played works for violin and piano together, including a violin-and-piano arrangement of Édouard Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, which they may have... more »

The international ITER project for fusion
It's fuel—a mixture of Deuterium and Tritium, two isotopes of Hydrogen—will be heated to temperatures in excess of 150 million°C, forming a hot plasma.

ITER is a large-scale scientific experiment that aims to demonstrate that it is possible to produce commercial energy from fusion.

Video Explanation: ITER, the way to fusion power (1 of 2) & ITER, the way to fusion power (2 of 2)

Q ≥ 10 [http://goo.gl/Qz9DD]

The Q in the formula symbolizes the ratio of fusion power to input power. Q ≥ 10 represents the scientific goal of the ITER project: to deliver ten times the power it consumes. From 50 MW of input power, the ITER machine is designed to produce 500 MW of fusion power—the first of all fusion experiments to produce net energy.

All of them keep their original gameplay features, so you can expect to climb blocks with Ryu, evaporate your enemies with Samus' or Megaman's cannon, whip their asses with Simon, slash them with your sword with Link... The combinations are really worth checking this out. The best part is that not only they remain loyal action wise but also jump wise. You have to play it in order to feel the magic.

Johann Sebastian Bach
"Great Fantasia & Fugue in G minor BWV 542" I: Fantasia
II - Fugue: J.S.Bach G minor fugue (the great) BWV 542/2

Fasten your seatbelts...

Evidence suggests that J.S. Bach completed and revised the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor for organ, BWV 542 (the "Great" G minor, as opposed to BWV 578, the "Little" G minor), as an audition for an organist position in Hamburg in 1720. Bach didn't get the job, but, happily enough, posterity did get the piece; generations of organists since then have considered it one of their repertoire's crown jewels. The two parts of BWV 542 (the fantasia -- sometimes titled Prelude instead -- and the fugue) are thought to have been composed separately: the fugue is assigned Bach's Weimar years (1708-1717) and the fantasia to his time in Cöthen (1717-1723, but, if... more »

September's Aurora by Yuichi Takasaka
APOD: [http://goo.gl/isCgu]

September's equinox arrived on the 23rd at 0905 UT. As the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south, spring begins in the southern hemisphere and autumn in the north. And though the seasonal connection is still puzzling, both spring and autumn bring an increase in geomagnetic storms. So as northern nights grow longer, the equinox also heralds the arrival of a good season for viewing aurora. Recorded earlier the past month, these curtains of September's shimmering green light sprawl across a gorgeous night skyscape. In the foreground lies Hidden Lake Territorial Park near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Calm water reflects the aurora, with bright star trails peering through the mesmerizing sky glow. Of course, shining at altitudes of 100 kilometers or so, planet Earth's auroras... more »

The Shortest Runway In The World (400m)
Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport

Wiki: [http://goo.gl/gjcn0]
Video: Shortest runway in the world?

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is the only airport on the Caribbean island of Saba. It is widely regarded as having the shortest commercially serviceable runway in the world.

Despite a reputation as the most dangerous airport in the world, no accidents have occurred at Juancho E. Yrausquin. The airport's risky reputation arises from the airport's physical position: it is flanked on one side by high hills; and on the runway's other side and both ends, cliffs drop into the sea. Additionally, the runway at the airport is extremely short (400m); this creates the possibility that an airplane could under/overshoot the runway during landing or takeoff and end up in the sea or dashed on the rocky cliffs.

Samurai Sword Umbrella

Man oh man... Why didn't they sell these when I was a kid?! -

"You can pretend that you've never acted like an umbrella was a sword because, I don't know, you're mature or something? Or you can get this awesome umbrella with a samurai sword handle. So, whether you're expecting a downpour of rain or ninja assassins, you're covered."

Remixing A Remix: Madeon's Pop Culture (Live Mashup)

This sounds really good! YouTube user Madeon used samples of 39 Tracks he likes and created a mash up that works wonderfully. Sounds like an original song by itself, which is really amazing considering this is basically pure improvisation. Very refreshing to hear Pop and Electronica blend together into this unique shape.

Tracklist:

Alphabeat - Boyfriend
Alphabeat - Fascination
Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars
Black Eyed Peas - Gotta Feeling
Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time
Capsule - Can I Have A Word
Chromeo - Momma's Boy
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Daft Punk - Aerodynamic
Daft Punk - Around The World
Deadmau5 - Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Remix)
Deadmau5 - Right This Second

Antonio Vivaldi
"The Four Seasons - IV: Winter"

Probably the best performance of The Four Seasons by Fabio Biondi's "Europa Galante". Even if you've listened to this plenty of times before, trust me, Fabio's rendition really is something else. The First section is chilling to the bone, electrifying, the instrumentists even manage to reproduce the sound of squeaky teeth [http://goo.gl/9ljWE] . Second section [http://goo.gl/7L4o5] is one of the most beautiful things... After being exposed to the coldest of winds you are now watching the rain hit your window from inside your house while you sit in front of a fireplace, drinking a hot cup of coffee. Third movement [http://goo.gl/OO4Ny] just concludes graciously, as its Sonet claims: "this is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights."

And for a more precise reference here... more »
