#Photoshop Tip of the Every-so-often
Activate a Layer from the document window, part 1
Instead of clicking in the Layers panel to activate a layer, use the Move tool: if Auto Select Layer is not checked, hold down Command (PC: Control) to activate the layer you click on. I use this instead of Auto Select Layer so I don’t auto select the wrong layer by mistake.
Activate a Layer from the document window, part 2
With the Move tool active, Control-click (PC: Right-click) in your document window to pop up a list of all the layers in that position – choose the layer you want form this list.
HINT: This is why naming your layers is a good practice.

Wow, this is cool: my friends at creativeLIVE are extending the special bundle pricing for my classes until Friday. That means that you can purchase both 2 day classes for $99 (regularly $99 each). And this 2-for-1 day is only being advertised to my followers/fans/friends!
You get all four days plus 2 detailed 30+ PDF course handouts and my 50 top tips, tricks and shortcuts.
Normally special offers like this expire on the evening of the last day of the class (yesterday), but they've decided to extend the deal until the end of Friday. How great is that?
Look for the "special offers" button on this page:

What do you folks think about having a community contest? No big prize (other than bragging rights) but I thought it might be a fun way to get people to put their Photoshop skills to work.
I'd pick a theme, pick a few finalists and then ask for votes.
What do you think?

What do you folks think of this idea: when you post a finished piece of art that included lots of layers, take a screen capture of the Layers panel and upload it too so we can see the layer structure of your document.
Would it be of help to see the layers?

#Photoshop Tip of the Every-so-often
Setting One Dimension in the Crop Tool
If you need your file to be a certain height (4 inches for example) and you want to keep the width flexible, in Photoshop CS6’s crop tool, you can enter “4in” and leave the other entry blank. By typing “4in”, Photoshop understands that you want inches and not an aspect ratio. (Thank you Julieanne Kost)

#Photoshop Tip of the Every-so-often
Change Views in Refine Edge, Part 2
Each view in Refine Edge can be activated by pressing a single letter: M for Marching Ants, V for Overlay, B for On Black, W for On White, K for Black & White, L for On Layer and R for Reveal Layer. One useful way to use this is to toggle between two views, for example Black & White and On Layer, by pressing K and L.

#Photoshop Tip of the every-so-often
Open a flat version
If you want to temporarily open a flattened version of a layered document (for example, to open it more quickly or to show to someone), hold down Option (PC: Alt) and Shift when you open the file. It will “Read the Composite Data Instead” and open a flattened version – under the same name. Just be sure not to save the file as a flat psd!

Photoshop Tip of the every-so-often
Place multiple files
One way to create Smart Objects is to use the Place command to “import” in a file and it becomes a Smart Object. Problem is, you can only place one file at a time. Mini Bridge to the rescue! In Mini Bridge select and drag multiple files into your document to create Smart Objects from each one.

Question for you guys....
I've notice quite a few "tutorials" that are screen recordings with no narration or instruction. Some are time lapses where you see an image unfold - but again with no explanation or instruction.
Do you find those useful? Do you prefer videos that include narration/instruction or does it not matter?
Just curious....

2013-01-24 16:22:13 (3 comments, 1 reshares, 4 +1s)
A creativity challenge for you.... take either - of both - photos and do something with it. Then take someone else's version and add to it. The only "rule" is to include a short description of your thought process and what you did in Photoshop.
If you upload a photo, you have to okay with someone taking what you did and adding to it. (In some sites they call this Photoshop tennis: taking turns adding to a photo). Have fun, and share!

Today, on the "The Grid" our in-studio guest, Fashion Photographer Dixie Dixon
We saw Dixie's presentation in Nikon's booth at Photo Plus Expo in New York back in November and we were all blown away at the images she's creating, the clients she's shooting for, and the success she's become...at just 22-years-old! She's our in-studio guest and she'll be sharing lots of cool insights into the business, her gear, and of course we'll have lots of fun giveaways and stuff too! It's today at 4:00 PM ET (three hours from now), at http://www.kelbytv.com/thegrid --- can you please share this and help us spread the word? (Many thanks in advance). See you then! -Scott

#Photoshop Tip of the every-so-often
Smart Shadows/Highlights
Although it appears under Image>Adjustments, you can turn the Shadows/Highlights command into an editable Smart Filter. Just turn the Layer into a Smart Object first and Shadows/Highlights will appear as a Smart Filter - so you can edit it much like an adjustment layer.

Folks, thanks for all your recent contributions: there are some great tutorials and examples being added to the community. That is awesome!
I'm heading off to Imaging USA for a few days so won't have much time to pop in and comment, moderate etc. Please keep up the great work of contributing and Ill "see you" next week.

#Photoshop Tip of the Every-so-Often
Reposition your view while working
With tools other than the Type tools, you can hold down the Spacebar to temporarily activate the Hand tool. For example, with the Lasso tool, hold down the Spacebar so you can reposition the image on the screen (scroll to a different part of the image) – then let go to continue using the Lasso.

#Photoshop Tip of the every-so-often
Change shortcuts to adjustment layers
Here’s a keyboard shortcut change that’s very useful – if you use adjustment layers all the time. Go to Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts and in the Application Menu find Image>Adjustments and (for example) Curves. Change the shortcut to Command-M (PC: Cntl-M) and you’ll have to accept that change. Now pressing that shortcut will add a Curves adjustment layer, instead of launching "regular" Curves. (You'll have to click OK but it's still faster than going to the Adjustments panel)

#Photoshop Tip of the every-so-often
Put layers into a Group (folder) quickly with this shortcut: select the layers and then press Command-G (PC: Cntl-G)
Bonus: in Photoshop CS6 you can add layers styles such as drop shows to a Group and it will affect every layer in that Group.
