At the beginning of November, my wife and I backpacked down into the #GrandCanyon for three days. I'd actually never been there before, and now I wonder what took me so long! Definitely one of the all-time best desert backpack treks I've gone on. More photos and info here: http://www.mountainphotographer.com/backpacking-into-the-grand-canyon/

Here's a moonset at the Racetrack in Death Valley National Park. This is a mysterious place where rocks seem to have moved around this dry desert lakebed by their own volition, leaving long random tracks behind them.
The theory is that given just the right conditions, rain will flood the playa, then freeze, and then once the ice starts melting a little, strong winds will blow the ice-bound rocks around on the slick mud underneath.
These particular tracks – illuminated by the setting moon – are especially interesting. At first glance I assumed that they were car tracks – that some idiot had driven his car out there. Upon closer inspection, it’s clear that no car in the world could make tracks like this! Even more mysterious is that about a hundred feet away from these tracks are an almost exactly identical pattern, but aligned facing a different orientation. It boggles the mind... more »

Fireworks over Ouray, #Colorado on Saturday night's Octoberfest celebrations, as seen from nearly 4,000 feet higher on Hayden Mountain. The funny thing is that we had no idea this was going to happen! We just happened to be camping up on this high ridgeline when we heard the booming and got out of the tent to watch! Normally there's no Octoberfest fireworks, but Ouray still had the leftovers from 4th of July (the fireworks were cancelled then due to the drought conditions).

Mt. Tutoko (2656 m) is the tallest mountain in the rugged Darran Mountains on the South Island of #NewZealand . Tutoko rises abruptly almost 9,000 vertical feet from the Hollyford river valley, which is just about at sea level.

The impressive Vøringfossen waterfall plunges 183m (600 ft) from the Hardangervidda highlands into this gorge of the Eidfjord in Norway.
Perhaps even more impressive (at least from an engineer's perspective) is the nearby tunnel road that spirals down through the center of a mountain to deliver drivers to the bottom of the same fjord.
