I'm hoping to finish my light painter in time for the Roppongi Art Night on Saturday. The final design is a meter tall 20-pixel wand, but here's my first attempts with an 8-pixel version that just started working.

I got an SMS from my Japanese hair stylist dude yesterday. For some reason his use of the word "concerned" struck me as amusing, so I replied:

you're concerned? My best interest?
When I went to your schools
I went to your churches
I went to your institutional learning facilities?
All I wanted was a haircut.

I haven't heard back. Can anyone recommend a good place in Tokyo? I may need a new guy.

Had a fun night out with some friends at Gigabar Tokyo where they will let just about anyone up on stage. As proof of that, here's +Steve Middlekauff banging out a tune with yours truly on guitar. I believe this means we are now offically bros.

This is the first time I've played this tune live and the first time I've played with Steve at all, so hopefully you can overlook a few stumbles here and there.

Thanks +Pico Okada for recording this!

Music was made to be loved. We just made loving it easier. With Google Play Music for Chrome, you can now keep all the music you love in the cloud so that you always have it. To add new music, enable the “Google Play Music for Chrome” lab at play.google.com/music/listen#/labs. Then simply drag and drop songs into your Google Play Music library. If you have a lot of music in iTunes or if you want new music to be added automatically, you can configure this by clicking “Add Music” at the top right of play.google.com/music.

But, wait, there’s more! This new lab has extra goodies. You can now open a handy mini-player by clicking the arrow in the bottom right corner of our web app so you can see what’s playing or skip songs from any tab. Plus, download songs, albums and playlists directly from the web. Let us know what you think!

We built this lab using Chrome Apps and NativeClient techno... more »

I've bought every Nintendo console from the 80s forward in Akihabara, and will soon have a NeoGeo and WonderSwan to add to the mix. But I had to come to the USofA to acquire the crown jewel of my collection.

The good folks at https://www.atari2600.com/ even modded it with a composite video and mono RCA audio output, because my Japanese TVs don't speak RF Modulation too well.

I got a nice selection of games and managed to avoid my impulse to make an ironic purchase of an E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial cart.

Dear "little-knowledge smart" peoples of the internet. There is nothing inherently wrong or dangerous with a goto statement. There are innumerable ways to make mistakes writing software. #gotofail  is almost certainly a failure during copy/paste or other editor manipulation, and it could have (and does) happen to any programmer on any given day.

But thanks for hawking me all manner of T-Shirts and Bumper Stickers anyway! You are oh so very clever :)

Today's watch is by Oulm -- a manufacturer with a huge line of interesting and unique watches. It's probably obvious from the very first glance that this watch is not some rarefied Swiss timepiece but rather a mass-produced watch stamped out by the thousands. I own a watch that costs a thousand times more than what I paid for the Oulm that goes largely unnoticed. But whenever I wear this watch it's a guaranteed conversation-starter -- people love the design and the color/materials are quite good too. How cheap is it? They sell a version with four dials. I found one online for 30 cents more than I paid for this one.

The dials are pure unadulterated old-school shit. It's not a chronograph. It won't tell you the phases of the moon or when your wife is ovulating. It's literally nothing more than 3 fucking watches duct-taped together. Each... more »

I've been obsessed with time for as long as I can remember. Like most of us, I never have enough time and am hyper-aware of it. Maybe as a tiny act of rebellion against this reality, I stopped wearing a watch decades ago. Early on, people would ask me the time (remember when that was a thing?) and I would take pride in saying "I don't wear a watch"

Instead of pretending not to care when it's almost all I think about, I've decided to embrace the reality of limited time. So I started wearing a watch again and am constantly on the lookout for unique watches.

Ever Increasing
This watch is the perfect transition from no-watch to some-watch, because it's practically impossible to actually tell the time on it. It's the Ever Increasing model from Japanese watch designers SEAHOPE. It's also a watch made with... more »

Three-Dimensional Mid-Air Acoustic Manipulation [Acoustic Levitation]
http://adafru.it/b91002

The essence of levitation technology is the countervailing of gravity. It is known that an ultrasound standing wave is capable of suspending small particles at its sound pressure nodes and, so far, this method has been used to levitate lightweight particles, small creatures, and water droplets.

Friday morning we take my wife's car to the dealer for routine scheduled service. My wife is dealing with the service department so I scrounge around in the break room to find some (pretty decent) coffee. I come back and sit down to hear Service Guy: "In addition to the regular service we'll be applying some software updates to the vehicle." I somehow manage not to do a full-on spit-take with my coffee but do let go with a highly sarcastic "What could possibly go wrong?" which is pretty much the only words I said to the guy.

Later in the afternoon I'm kinda feeling like a dick and start making excuses for my behavior. Like it was zero-dark-nothing in the morning and I hadn't had coffee or woken up yet, etc. Not long after my wife's phone rings and I hear one side of what is a very disturbing conversation. She hangs up the phone and says we have to go to the... more »

Full Color 3D Printed Viral Figurines from Ryan Kittelson
http://adafru.it/b90089

I have shared about CG generalist and instructor Ryan Kittleson before, one of my favorite go-to references for character design training resources for 3D printing. Well, he is the force behind a a heaping helping of both viral 3D printed object memes and the 3D printing of web memes, so I’ve collected a wee gallery of the items in this post here.

From his bio:

Ryan Kittleson has loved combining art with technology since he was a young child with a VIC-20 and enjoying visually rich images by artists like Dali and Escher. He taught himself Photoshop as a teen and then 3ds Max in his early 20s. He worked as a game artist in Raleigh, North Carolina for a while before returning to school and completing a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in illustration from East Carolina University, all ... more »

It's a Christmas tradition to binge on Mario with the family. So I turned on my Wii U for the second time yesterday (purchased on release day over a year ago). Needless to say it needed countless system updates, etc. But for the life of me I couldn't get any online stuff to work -- it kept telling me to move the Wii U closer to my WiFi router but since the two are actually touching I suspected something else.

It turns out that Nintendo's online services, multiplayer, eShop...everything have been down due to overwhelming load on Christmas. I just checked this morning and it's still down. Boxing Day, I guess? So a few thoughts:

1. What poor kid got a fricking /Wii U/ for Christmas! I've bought damn near every video game console over the last 20 years on the first day of release and still couldn't bring myself to get an XBox One. Wii U???

2. And... more »
