五時のチャイム

Every day at 5:00 a little song is played over loudspeakers in Tokyo. I have heard that the song is different in different areas, but where I live this is the song I hear every day reminding me to come home from the rice fields for dinner.

About a week ago the annual Illumination lights were set up in my neighborhood as well. And they come on at 5PM also. What I mean is they come on exactly at 5PM when the chime starts playing. These two systems aren't linked in any way -- it might be something as simple as a person hitting the switch when they hear the chimes playing for all I know. When I first moved here I used to watch a GPS-synced clock and it was uncanny to watch the 4 change to a 5 exactly when the first note of the song played.

Japanese people are very precise about time, so of course the lights come on exactly at 5PM. In fact it would seem quite strange if the lights were delayed by even a second or two. It's one of the cool little unique things that makes life interesting here. ___

Recently over dinner a friend explained to me the ancient Japanese art of woodblock printing. He has been collecting fine works for years and the idea fascinated me.

Here is my first try with a laser-etched woodblock. I see now how tricky it can be to get all the ink on the paper, but only where you want it. The results aren't too bad, and now the office smells like a forest fire!

Samurai Blue Beer

Every day I walk by a temporary Beer Garden that showed up earlier this summer in my neighborhood. Like many things that are so accessible that they are easily ignored, I never actually visited it until a few hours before they dismantled it today.

What caught my attention was the bright blue colored beers people were drinking. And each beer had an impossibly perfect swirl of foam on top. I simply had to try blue beer. And try it is about all I did. The pictures here were taken after I had my fill of Kirin Samurai Blue Ichiban Shibori Frozen Draft. I'm probably missing a few words, but you get the gist.

And try it is about all I did. The pictures here were taken after I had my fill of Kirin Samurai Blue Ichiban Shibori Frozen Draft. I'm probably missing a few words, but you get the gist.

The "foam" on top is beer foam that has been frozen, which is why it can hold the swirly shape so well. Mine had melted by the time I remembered to take a picture, but I included an official picture from the Kirin web site and I can attest to the fact that every single one I saw looked perfect and identical to that picture. The foam comes out of a soft-serve ice cream dispenser and is freshly affixed atop your beer just before it is served to you. If you're optimizing for appearances, it's a work of pure genius. However in my experience, foam just kinda gets in the way and hard frozen foam ever more so.

So what does blue beer taste like? The obvious and yet surprising answer is it tastes like blue. It doesn't taste like blueberries or blue corn or any actual blue food. It tastes like blue Otter Pops or blue Jolly Rancher candy -- Candy Blue #7 copyright Dow Chemical is the flavor. It made the beer taste more sweet than I like, but it was pretty refreshing on a hot day.

In the right light it glows with a fluorescent greenish-blue tinge. It kinda reminded me of the way they mark the bio-engineered super bacteria in all of your finer straight-to-video films.

So there you have it. I spent $7 for two sips of beer and some pictures. A++++ would buy again.___

I purchased a vintage jukebox earlier this month -- it was manufactured several years before I was born! But it was a bit too tasteful and subdued, so I built some RGB lights for it. This is my first test run of the Bling-O-Tron.

It's held up by rubber bands and duct tape as you can see. It'll get a proper installation once I get the software finished.

I'm Lovin' It

Recently I took a picture of a poster advertising jobs available at McDonalds. It had pictures of young cheerful Japanese people carrying out the many different jobs on offer. But one of the pictures was something I simply could not take my eyes off of. It showed a young man riding on a brightly colored McDonald's branded motorcycle with a large trunk on the back. The extremes of laziness and gluttony this picture appeared to be promising were so tantalizing I could barely contain myself. So I searched the web, and sure enough...

McDonalds Delivers To Your House in Japan
You order on the web and 30 minutes later you're eating McDonalds on the couch and you never even bothered to put pants on. In addition, the McDonald's menu in Japan is off the freaking hook. You want a hamburger made out of shrimp, you say? OK! Would you like Churros or Corn with that? The pictures here document my order and rather than explain it all here I've attached some commentary notes to each of the pictures below.

Throughout the process you get email status updates and can track the progress of your order online. In my case they also straight up called me to let me know they were cooking me a fresh instance of a particular specialty burger and it would take an extra 10 minutes.

All of this...ALL. OF. THIS...blew my freaking mind and my Japanese friends were mystified by it. I had to explain that in the US if you want to eat McDonalds at home they make you drive your ass to them and then suffer the indignity of trying to order through a half-duplex clown-head walkie talkie set-up. And when you finally get home your bag is missing half the shit you ordered.

When I say this, Japanese people look at me in shocked horror that such an enterprise is not only allowed to exist, but apparently is thriving financially. This is a perfect example of the cultural divide between America and Japan. Japanese people have no problem believing we Americans all walk around with guns everyday, but they can't get their heads around the fact that McDonalds doesn't offer white-glove delivery service.___

Beauty, Eh?

Play Music All Access is now available in Canada. I, for one, will miss the snarky comments from our Northern brethren on all of our launch announcements. Congrats to the team for pulling this off!

麻布十番の犬

I barely made it through last summer in Tokyo -- the combination of high temperatures and high humidity make for a very specific type of misery. The next time I want to complain about the weather, I'll think of this poor little guy.

Amurica is a vintage clothing store I happened upon in Nakameguro. Since this is Japan, when they say #murica  it's not sarcasm...it's love.

Burnt soy 醤油 ramen at 五行西麻布. Strong flavor and one of my new faves. Also this place is too upscale for orange soda, so they serve an excellent jasmine iced tea.
