Google TV: Resurrection
+Google TV is an evolving platform that was way ahead of its time when it first came out and has been fighting "Google TV is dead" memes ever since, assisted by the first manufacturer Logitch bowing out from supporting their products very ungraciously. Even here at #io13 there were plenty of people looking at my Google TV logo on my shirt and saying "isn't that dead"? But the truth is quite different - and the amazingly strong response from developers attending Google I/O this year underscores that truth.
The truth is that Google TV's development team and management has undergone some important changes in recent months, but the platform itself has growing and enthusiastic support from a widening array of hardware vendors, apps developers and streaming media services - not to mention a quietly growing cadre of GTV e... more »

How to understand the rise of Google.
Apple and Google both make products and services. Products include hardware and software, and services include things like, say, iTunes or Gmail. But that’s where the similarity ends.
Apple is a product company. Their services exist to support their products.
Google is a services company. Their products exist to support their services.
The shifting fortunes of these two companies is less about which company is succeeding and failing and more about which model is succeeding or failing.
Right now, the product model is on the ropes, and the services model is on the rise.
Here’s why:

Oh My God!
Those were the words I uttered pretty much all afternoon today.
I am a car enthusiast, I've driven and owned many fun cars before, I knew I was getting a nice car, but I was not prepared for THAT!
I picked up our P85 today. Oh my God!
I think all the money we "save" on gas with this car goes straight into tires.
The acceleration is neck snapping brutal.
Pretty much only limited by the laws of physics and the stickyness of the tires.
The electronic traction control got definitly a workout as I took it straight from the factory to the California hills.
I see many fun filled weekend miles ahead of me.
This is the perfect blend of "reasonable commute car" during the week and insane performance car on the weekend.
I'm seriously wondering how many miles it will take to ... more »

Coming back to Germany feels odd in a multitude of ways. I was looking forward to Sundays without much to do, to early closing hours, to six bakeries on every block, and had come to terms with expensive dinners out[1], but what I didn't expect was Germany's weird relationship with new media companies and tech in general.
Here are some of the greatest German technology companies, yet the dusty, grey, patina of years long gone still prevails. Mandatory "core" working hours that are reminiscent of the stiff culture of IBM or Siemens, not Facebook or Instagram. Hierarchies more befitting an accounting mill in one of Monty Python's "Chartered Accountancy" skits than Web 2.0, and bureaucracy that would make most Swiss banks blush. Telecommute, flexible work hours, evaluations based on output not time spent, and the modern, airy, and relaxed work environments of Silicon ... more »

* Hallelujah We Have Drywall!!! *
It's been pretty much exactly 12 months ago that we tore out the back half of our house.
After working our construction site for the last year, it's awesome to finally look at "walls" and not just see bare studs, wires and plumbing.
Amazing what a difference a bit of gypsum board makes.
Now I can almost imagine this as being a "house" again. ;)

If you haven't heard, Motorola is taking a VW bus and a Sprinter van entirely wrapped in velcro, full of hackable phones, electronics toys, and latest in 3D printing equipment across the country for a series of hackathons this summer. We're looking for a coder/hacker badass to join our team that has experience creating cool things on/with/around Android phones, microcontrollers (Arduino, IOIO, Raspberry Pi), Processing, and can develop Android apps of moderate complexity.
Experience in hacking production hardware or embedded systems is a plus. There are no particular other quals, except being enthusiastic and an effective facilitator.

Progress on the house project
This is what I do on weekends....
The photos show the progress of 12 hrs work both days this weekend.
Finished the shed.
Put in lots of lights, insulation & soundproofing all the way around. Gotta be the nicest "Garden Shed" in the neighborhood.
Bathrooms were hot-mopped. Now we started to install "DensShield" board.
Yay, making progress... slowly.

Some tips for the new "Play Store Publisher Console"
tl;dr:
If you're not a developer - have a nice day.
If you use the Google Play Developer Console keep reading
As you all should know by now, the Google Play Developer Console is getting a major update on April 15th.
One area which will change (improve) is the handling of Multiple APKs.
Read more how it SHOULD work here: http://developer.android.com/google/play/publishing/multiple-apks.html
I noticed that the old console was frequently too "forgiving" and allowed combinations of APKs which do not exactly follow the intended guidelines.
The new console will check much more closely that your APKs "work as intended".
The biggest pitfall I've noticed for especially "Google TV" developers is that developers often have two versions ... more »

Californians: Act Now to Help Ban Fracking. April 2013.
The big news is they have now discovered 15 billion barrels of oil in the Monterey Shale, more than the Marcellus Shale, more than the Bakken Shale, more than anywhere in the country. So unless we the people stop it, fracking is coming to California with a vengeance.
Despite what you’ve heard about natural gas being clean, fracking also contributes to climate change. Although the burning of the gas is clean, the process of fracking releases so much methane into the air, that if all the shale in California is fracked, it will delay the implementation of AB 32, California’s Global Warming Solutions Act. This is the landmark legislation, a model for the country, which requires that California reduce its carbon emissions back to 1990 levels by 2020. Fracking the 15 billion barrels of oil in California will add... more »

One of the most frustrating things about being an Android developer is having to deal with decisions that are made or features that are ignored because iOS cannot do something that Android can.

RFC: What is the new "Save" icon?
I was recently reviewing the UX for some +Google TV apps, and it struck me that one app (a game) was very prominently using a "Floppy Disk" icon to represent "Save".
Somehow this looked very out of place, and I have tried to come up with a better alternative.
A quick Google search brought up a lot of floppy disk images, some nostalgia and this article by +Scott Hanselman .
But it did not lead me to a "21st century" alternative.
Anyone have a good suggestion how to represent "saving" data in the 21st century?
Or have we simply come to expect that stuff is always saved. By default. And data should never be lost? No more explicit "saving" required in the days of #CloudComputing?
