HTC One with Stock Android two be announced within two weeks

Remember a week ago when +Russell Holly told us that the Googlew ould be announcing a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition and half the Internet told him he was basically an idiot? My how you looked funny less than 24 hours later, didn't you?

The man hates rumors. If he says HTC is planning to announce an HTC One with stock Android, I believe him.

The big question remains is software. The HTC One touts great music with Boom Sound. Will the HTC One with stock Android still rock out with Boom Sound in some way or another? Next, how about that camera? We know that HTC Sense camera's are borderline amazing. I'm curious as to how the Seneless, stock camera will work in comparison.

New Nexus 7 rumor puts revamped Nexus 7 coming in July

We haven't had a Nexus 7 refresh rumor in a while. The latest one comes from Digitimes, whom has a track record for hit or miss when it comes to reporting tech news. However, they were correct this time last year, when they reported on the original Nexus 7.

Elan Microelectronics, a Taiwanese supplier of integrated circuitry for touchscreen devices, is reported to have already begun shipping touchscreen controllers for the next generation of the Nexus 7.

Thanks to the order for Nexus 7 controllers, Elan is said to boast increased revenues in May and June. This tells us that the device itself is being manufactured in June, which goes nicely with the earlier reports about the release of the Nexus 7 in July.

Yahoo buys gaming platform PlayerScale, +Marissa Mayer is on a roll.

PlayerScale, which was founded in 2011, has provided backend services to thousands of game developers whose products are played by more than 150 million people worldwide. Unlike many of the other companies that Yahoo has acquired in recent months, PlayerScale will not be shutting down its services.

Google to upgrade their SSL certificates to 2048-bit

Google on Thursday announced plans to beef up the encryption of the connections made to its services. The company is aiming to upgrade all of its SSL certificates to 2048-bit keys by the end of 2013.

DoS attacks suck...

Someone who doesn't like CMStats is spamming CM gerrit with patchset uploads every 3 minutes.  These patchset uploads have 340-500 patches each.  They're making sure not to recycle changeIDs, and each patch in a set just adds one blank line to an XML file.

NOT the way to get your point across.

Google engineer discovers and publicizes Windows 7 and Windows 8 security vulnerability

A Google engineer has once again disclosed a Windows flaw. In a Full Disclosure posting to the SecLists mailing list, Tavis Ormandy — an Information Security Engineer at Google — details a vulnerability in Windows 7 and Windows 8 that can be exploited by local users to gain escalated privileges...

...Nevertheless, it appears that Ormandy has taken the full disclosure approach, stating he doesn't have "time to work on silly Microsoft code," rather than Microsoft's preferred responsible disclosure route that calls for vulnerabilities to be reported privately.

HTC One Sales hit 5 million, half of Galaxy S4

Amidst a flurry of negative reports, a glimmer of hope for HTC – the One is selling relatively well, moving five million units since launch. Still though, for having a significantly less marketing campaign than the S4, the HTC One sales aren't doing horribly.

Kim Dotcom accuses Google, Facebook, and Twitter of violating his two-step security patent

Define: Irony: Kim Dotcom claims Google, Facebook, and Twitter are violating his 2-factor authentication patent. Kim Dotcom ran a website (and runs a new one) where people upload pirated content.

The most interesting thing is, he actually does seem to have a valid patent from 1997 that is broad enough to cover 2-factor authentication codes being sent by SMS.

Google X buys floating wind turbine power company

Google X, the secretive division dedicated to futuristic long-shot projects, is making a new acquisition: Makani Power, a company that develops autonomous airborne wind turbines it believes could provide "kite power." Bloomberg Businessweek first reported the news in a longer piece on Google X, saying the deal was in the process of closing for an unknown amount. According to Bloomberg, Page approved the deal — but only if the team would crash five turbines in the near future. Makani has officially confirmed the deal on its website, and Google has been a longtime investor, backing Makani as early as 2007. Now, the company is one of the only known acquisitions by Google's moonshot wing.

+Project Glass announces #IfIHadGlass  winners to get invitations over the next few weeks

When Project Glass announced the “#ifihadglass” contest in February, Twitter and Google+ lit up with submissions both humorous and serious. After the winners were selected, the buzz died down, and the wait began. Over the last month, winners have watched in anxious impatience as the IO12 attendees received their units, and began sharing their experiences (and #throughGlass content). Now, for the rest of us, the wait is finally over.

ClockworkMod Recovery for Google Glass XE

This is an unofficial / testing release of +ClockworkMod recovery for the Explorer Edition of +Project Glass.

To use, you can "fastboot oem unlock" your device and either boot one time with "fastboot boot <recovery_name>.img" or replace the stock recovery with "fastboot flash recovery <recovery_name>.img". The camera shutter will scroll through the selection list and the power button will select an item.

This is built using cm-10.1 sources and kernel source located here: https://github.com/bekriebel/android_kernel_omap/tree/glass-omap-xrr02_cm-10.1

I have successfully tested the following:
  access via adb (including Koush's new adb backup)

What's New:
- New grid view makes it easier to find your files
- New quick preview lets you view photos and other files from within the app
- Scan documents, receipts and letters for safe keeping in Drive; then search by contents once uploaded

HTC Executives continue to leave the company

The Verge has learned that HTC's Chief Product Officer, Kouji Kodera, left the company last week. Kodera was responsible for HTC's overall product strategy, which makes the departure especially notable on the heels of the global launch of the make-or-break One.

It's not just Kodera. In the past three-odd months, HTC has lost a number of employees in rapid succession — most recently Jason Gordon, the company's vice president of global communications. Other fresh departures include global retail marketing manager Rebecca Rowland, director of digital marketing John Starkweather, and product strategy manager Eric Lin.

Verizon HTC One supposedly spotted

Will Verizon launch the HTC One soon? We've seen an HTC One (dlxplus) pass through the FCC with Verizon radios. Now, it seems one has actually been spotted in the wild. Additionally, Verizon has a special media event scheduled for today at CTIA 2013, during which they may unveil new products. Naturally, the HTC One is one of the suspects.

Sprint's Motorola X-Phone passes through FCC

Following previous AT&T FCC spottings, the X-Phone (XFON) has been seen once again, this time with Sprint support. (The Verizon variant has been spotted via Motorola USB drivers recently.) According to the FCC documents, this Android phone seems to be sporting NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE+EDR and 802.11ac. In addition to support for Sprint's network, the phone also carries certification for HSPA+ 21 Mbps over the 2100, 1900 and 850MHz bands.

That's 2 out of the 4 major US carriers confirmed via FCC. Let's make this thing a done deal +Motorola Mobility. Where's the announcement?

Apparently many Tumblr users don't have much faith in the recent Yahoo acquisition. There was a mass exodus from Tumblr to WordPress today. 72,000 imports in 1 hour. Wow.

Messenger removed, the new Hangouts have been added, +Snapseed filters for photos, Location map added to view your friends whereabouts (if they let you), and more!

Hangouts, phone calls and Google Voice

Thanks for all of your feedback on last week's Hangouts launch. I wanted to quickly talk about 1) making/receiving phone calls in Gmail, and 2) Google Voice support more generally.

1) Today's version of Hangouts doesn't yet support outbound calls on the web and in the Chrome extension, but we do support inbound calls to your Google Voice number. We're working hard on supporting both, and outbound/inbound calls will soon be available. In the meantime, you can continue using Google Talk in Gmail.

2) Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.

Verizon Motorola XFON spotted: Join me in a happy dance

Being on Verizon, you become accustomed to many things. 1) Great coverage across the country. 2) More LTE available than all other carriers combined. 3) Being screwed out of every penny you have. 4) Having nearly zero phones support true customization via stable AOSP ROMs.

The XFON, rumored to be stock Android, will be a massive breath of fresh air. As a Verizon Wireless customer, these rumors and leaks truly excited me. If a low price point brings this phone to the masses. I'm all for it.

HALO sees first style re-touches (decent looking bubble, shadows, etc.), + images and avatars shouldn't be pixelated. App crashes (twicca, etc.) are fixed, it was all the same error causing this.

+Yamil Ghazi fixed his launcher, had some padding issues and there are several bugfixes for the calendar, which we track ourselves from now on to fix Googles higher layout bugs.

Google branded media player (H840 DEVICE) passes through FCC

According to the FCC, a new Google branded media device is making the rounds. The new Google product “functions as a media player” and includes an external power source (AC adapter , so we know this new product isn’t a tablet or smartphone). What exactly do we know? Well, we don’t know much besides the product name: H840 DEVICE and the model number: H2G2-42 (which is a nice hat tip towards you Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy fans).

Yahoo's board has approved a $1.1 billion cash deal to purchase the blogging site Tumblr, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Tumblr made $13 million in revenue in 2012. Is Tumblr really worth $1.1 billion, Yahoo sure thinks so.

The total number of Tumblr posts to date is 44.6 billion.
Tumblr had 29.2 million unique visitors in March 2013.

As always. Disgruntled Canuck 'n sh!t.

So it has come to this. I can use +Google Play Books to its fullest extent, uploading personal eBooks as I please, probably even uploading newspaper epubs in the future [I need APIs!]. I can use +Google Play Magazines to subscribe to american eZines [though the Paper Subscription Recognition still hasn't hit up here; hurry up, dang it]. I can use +Google Play Apps for all my Android stuffs. I can use +Google Play Devices to buy the latest and greatest Android devices.

But I can't use +Google Play Movies to buy/rent Canadian TV series such as Continuum, or use +Google Play Music to buy and encourage the Cowboys Fringants, a local folk band [I wouldn't anyway, but it's for the illustration]. The content on the +Google Play Store, Music-wise, is enough to satisfylinguist... more »

Android 4.2.2 coming to HTC One soon, “Senseless” edition later this summer?

Let's not push those HTC One with stock Android reports off to the side just yet. The latest comes from a famed HTC insider. They report a Senseless version is coming later this summer and that HTC One owners should get 4.2.2 in a few weeks.

If these are true. I really hope this trend continues.
