Chris Chabot140,506Dave Powell from shoottokyo.com is in town and organizing a photowalk Sunday the 14th. Next to being an awesome person, and fantastic photographer he's also something of an expert at photowalks after having organized ones in Sydney, San Francisco, Tokyo, Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong and Boston. *When:* Sunday April 14th, 2013 *Time:* 2PM *Where:*  Marina Green.  We will meet on the corner of Scott and Marina Boulevard.  We will shoot in and around Marina Green or wherever the road takes us.   After we lose light we will find a place to grab a bite and a few drinks. *Gear:* Pack whatever you are comfortable shooting with.  Remember, the more gear you carry the less photographs you actually take. We will be walking so don’t pack too heavy. *Who:* Photowalks are fun for everyone, and for all skill levels. From camera phones to  professional systems. It's all about the fun and about exploring and sharing with people with similar interests, so join us! Jeff Smith61,934Welcome to The Selfy Sunday Project for *December 2/12* _PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS NOT FOR THIS SUNDAY, NOV. 25/12._ Theme: *Bond, James Bond!* I want to see Selfy's that are inspired by *007* and the James Bond films. Lots exotic locations, action packed chases as well as numerous villains and sexy leading ladies to offer inspiration here. Or just stick to a more general "SPY" or cloak and dagger noire theme. Either way it should be fun. _Props may come in handy here!_ ________________________________ The Halloween SSP was the scariest, most ghoulish, terrifying Selfy Sunday ever. The submissions were amazing. Well done everyone. As always I want to thank +LaDonna Pride    for all of her hard work and she will be helping along the way as our co-host.  Thanks everyone we are all looking forward to some great Selfies. Doug Kaye63,529I'm still trying to catch this elusive gem. Moonrise is 7:52pm. Sunset is 8:18pm. From Hawk Hill the moon will rise behind the GG bridge and downtown San Francisco. We can't predict the fog. It's always a longshot in August. I'll get there about 7:45 after recording @110414918019803275342, so this will be a leaderless event unless someone (@102691005290181713701?) steps up. If it looks bad from Hawk Hill, we usually try Fort Baker (behind the big rock) just too see what we can get. The Park Service will probably close the gate above the roundabout by 8:30, so it's best to park below the roundabout and walk up as far as you need to get the best shot.Full Moon at the Golden Gate Bridge2012-08-02 04:30:0014

Anna in Washington Square Park

She was sitting opposite us on the benches in the park. Wearing earbuds and reading a book. Smiling and laughing. "I wonder what she's reading?" I said. "Probably Tina Fey's book," replied +Scott Loftesness. I went over, sat down next to her and asked her. Turn out it was Amy Poehler's book. Close enough. She told me her name was Anna, a student from University of Michigan.

Times Square with Coat

I previously posted a candid-style image of her. This is a more of a portrait. She was there for a French fashion magazine, being photographed as she strolled aimlessly among the tourists who didn't quite know what was going on. I figured it out right away when I saw a guy with a battery-powered hair blower standing in the middle of the street. While she was there for the magazine shoot, she was also kind enough to give us these terrific looks. With +Scott Loftesness.

I saw these two having a great time in Washington Square Park last week with +Scott Loftesness. I walked up and told them how great they looked. The woman on the right said, "I haven't heard that in decades!" We had a good time as I made this portrait.

Canon T6i/750D and T6s/760D -- All About the Gear

Gordon and I look at two new Canon cameras: the Rebel T6i and T6s, also known as the 750D and 760D, respectively. (Yeah, it’s confusing.) The original Rebel was the first under-$1,000 DSLR and now boosted to 24 megapixels, these new models continue as good “above entry level” cameras.

Are the additional features in the T6s/760D (eye sensor for EVF/LCD switching, info LCD on the top plate, rear control dial, servo autofocus in Live View) worth the US$100 premium? When should you be using Live View instead of the optical viewfinder? And are all Canon STM lenses created equal? (Hint: Some make more noise than others!) Tune in to hear the answers and how these new cameras compare to the Nikon D5500 and Sony a6000.

Also in this episode, Gordon reviews the updated Canon “nifty thrifty fifty” EF 50mm f/1.8 STMlens.... more »

Also in this episode, Gordon reviews the updated Canon “nifty thrifty fifty” EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens.___

Rosalyn

She was sitting around the fountain on a hot afternoon in New York City's Washington Square Park. Suddenly she shook her head like a dog trying to shed water. She looked great. I went over and explained what I'd seen and why I needed to make her photograph. She was game, but told me she'd only recently come to like her hair. For years she'd hated it. I asked her to repeat the shake for me. With +Scott Loftesness.

Waiting for Columbus

Inspired by +Scott Loftesness' classic Bookends image. Shooting across subway platforms is a very easy way to capture bits of city life. It's hard for people to give you a hard time when they're separated by electrified train tracks, and the compositions and (lack of) human interaction are always fascinating.

Panasonic Lumix ZS50/TZ70 - All About the Gear

The Panasonic Lumix TZ70 (ZS50 in North America) is one of the “super zoom” or “travel zoom” compact cameras, whose most-notable feature is a 30x optically stabilized zoom lens. That would be the equivalent of a whopping 24-720mm lens in a full-frame camera, giving you telescope-like views from very far away.

Compared to other super-zoom cameras, the ZS50/TZ70 manages to pack in an electronic viewfinder and WiFi+NFC, but compared to last year’s model (ZS40/TZ60) it has lost the built-in GPS. The sensor is 12MP instead of the previous 18MP, but that has improved the image quality particularly in lower light. Also noteworthy, the new camera can shoot in RAW mode as well as JPEG.

At US$400, a super-zoom should be considered for every family photographer’s kit. Listen to Gordon and me to hear if the LumixZS50/TZ70 i... more »

Inside and Out

I was sitting inside a restaurant and made this image with my Sony a7s and a Leica 90mm Elmarit-M f/2.8. But what you see here is a severe crop of the original. It was a mere 1MP from the 12MP original. I had to enlarge it 2:1 after the crop to make it this large. Check out the level of detail that's preserved in only 1MP. (I did add sharpening.) I'm going to post the full-frame original in a comment so you can see how small an area this really comes from.

Street Photographer Hard at Work

To all my landscape-photog friends, this is how street photographers work. (1) We often sit down. (2) We don't carry or use tripods, (3) We use light little cameras and small bags, if at all. (4) We generally work in good weather. (5) If it gets too uncomfortable, we find a place (sitting again) for a cappuccino or beer.(6) Rather than hiking, we generally just wait for our subject to come to us. (7) We can sleep late in the morning, take off for a long lunch in the middle of the day, and have a nice dinner or just go to bed early.

Show Us Your Tights!

She was walking through the gorgeous morning light at 101 California Street in San Francisco yesterday. As she was about to pass by, I said, "Nice tights!" She smiled, pulled out her earbuds and struck a few poses. Everybody loves a sincere compliment and people who dress for attention are often happy to pose for a photograph. Particularly on a nice late-spring day. Digital again. Sony a7s + Leica 35mm f/2 Summicron ASPH. With +Scott Loftesness and Micahel Brunsfeld.

Keely in Red on Red

Yes, another Woman in Red I stalked today in San Francisco with +Scott Loftesness. I approached her after shooting her walking down a staircase. She said she didn't notice me. (I'm doing something right!) I explained my "red thing" and asked if she'd pose. "I'm not going to see this online am I?" And, "Okay, so long as you don't show my face." Scott had pointed out the new red taxi lanes in San Francisco, so that's what inspired the composition and pose. She was really good about it.

Oh yeah, and this was the first day in three months I've shot digital instead of film. Sony a7s with a Leica 35mm f/2 Summicron ASPH. I forgot how easy digital is, and the luxury of seeing your shots right away.

Nikon D5500 - All About the Gear

The Nikon D5500 is the company’s third camera in the D5xx series, positioned as a solid entry-level body between the D3300 and D7200. All three share the same image quality. The differences? The D5500 is Nikon’s only DSLR with an LCD that is both fully articulated and touch-sensitive, features which Gordon finds quite attractive. But the D5500 is far from perfect. It has lost the built-in GPS from the previous D5300 and the 18-55mm kit lens doesn’t match up to the 24MP sensor.

Gordon and I use the D5500 as a launching point for two general topics: (1) the value (or not) of having built-in GPS, and (2) the relative merits of optical viewfinders (OVFs) such as in this camera versus electronic viewfinders (EVFs) found in mirrorless cameras. #CameraLabs.com #D5500   #AllAboutTheGear  #Nikon #TWiP
