ISOOSI Research Engine3,413This week on the #ISOOSICHAT  we are excited to have special guest +Barry Schwartz from Search Engine Roundtable (SER). Barry will be joining our regular #ISOOSIChat panelists including +Ammon Johns +Bill Slawski and +Carlos Fernandes.Barry has provided a very unique and valuable commentary on search engines and the search marketing industry for many years. Barry and the SER team report on the most interesting threads taking place at various popular Search Engine Marketing forums each day. Search Engine Roundtable not only reports on these topical issues, but also provides a synopsis that provides greater detail on these forum threads. One of SER's primary goals is provide a single source for the reader to visit to locate the most interesting threads covered at the SEM forums. Those in our audience that visit or contribute to forums know that sometimes things can get stated that are not based on facts. Sometimes these observations may lead to statements that sound like fact, but they are unfounded. We are after all talking about search engines here and considerations that are impacted by their algorithms - which unfortunately we in the SEM arena don't have access to :)Observations such as these can quickly turn from threads with some small incorrect assumptions into more widespread rumors and sometimes into larger myths that stick around for a longer period of time.Barry and his team do a great job of monitoring “hot topics” on the forums, presenting all sides of those important issues while contributing to the discussion with their own valued opinions.Bill Slawski, (Director of Search Marketing at Go Fish Digital) is well known for his vast knowledge of Google and other search engines and the patents that have been filed relating to their ranking algorithms. Although it is difficult to have certainty about the value and mix of individual search engine ranking signals, Bill has the notable ability to always bring always bring it back to facts…. referencing related patents, interviews or official statements on the subjeSearch Marketing Rumors, Myths and Truths2014-03-18 20:00:0063G+

Meloney Hall2,581Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.”Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper.Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive). How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +Sacha Chua  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!  She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.   This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.aspSelect YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0035G+

Jess + Scott + You264People are bombarded with so many messages...which requires intentional planning to integrate a message across mediums, interact with customers in a way that brings them into the story, and know exactly what the result will be. That’s the obvious truth of using storytelling in marketing.Source:The company value proposition. (Who are you, what do you do, and why does it matter?)Framework:Stories position your product within the marketplace and are reinforced by every customer facing area of the business (and to ensure consistency...the buy in from employees, vendors, and collaborators must exist too).Connection Point:Stories show solutions to customer problems, give them opportunities to experience what they are told they will receive. Here are some commonly held beliefs...that are actually myths:- Try to get customers to interact with the brand (but, do they really want to?).- Interaction builds relationship (but, do people want to have a relationship with a brand?).- Be everywhere all the time to reach customers (but, do customers want to hear from you all the time?)Special Guest: Mike AlltonCombine all that with SEO and +Mike Allton  is the one person we immediately thought of. Why? He comes from a website background, understands how the web can be our sales funnel and how our time and energy using social media (ohh… including automation) generates return.Come and lets dig into our understanding of how we tell our story, how it affects the actual experience when connecting to us, and how to create referral or recurring business by maintaining relationships. Ohhh...Did we talk about “Differentiated Storytelling?”  And now, so can you.YOU (the Y in JSY) matter - come and explore this topic with +Jessica Dewell and +Scott Scowcroft. The one stability in all this is Google+ where I can be found, time allowing, on most days. _The conversation here is very real and the issues we talk about are engaging and I have met people on G+ who are simply superb to connect with. I post frequently on what grabs my attention. I share insights from my writing and research and I take part in many conversations where I feel I can deliver value.  Social media is changing everything. How we shape that change and what we do in the aftermath is down to us. _This week's show is sponsored by:+Holiday Inn Washington DC-Central/White House  A full service hotel, conveniently located in downtown Washington, DC The hotel is located within walking distance of the White House, DC Convention Center, and two separate Metro/subway stops. http://www.inndc.comEach week +Christine DeGraff & +Mia Voss  spotlight guests who share What's Your Story? Eli Fennell65,259There are different ways to build a following, and different goals in terms of reach and scale.  The small business owner may dream of internet media stardom, but probably doesn't need it like the Big Brand, their goals may be more modest (reaching that small but critical fan base, for example).  Likewise, the Tech Blogger may never rival the audience of Britney Spears, but can build a respectable and valuable audience in their own ways. This Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 8 PM ET, we'll be discussing this issue with three guests who have approached it in very different ways and with different opportunities as well.+Chris Jenkins is a web guy, home brewer, and "glasshole" (Google Glass Explorer) from my home state of Florida.  His turn ons include long walks on the beach while playing Ingress, and his turn offs include poorly coded or incomplete websites and blogs.+Alexandra Riecke-Gonzales is an Authority Marketer & Brand Strategist at +SEOWiSE, a graduate student at Kent State University, and also a Glass Explorer.  She is a bit of a health nut and the proud owner of three dogs.+Aaron Wood is a social media "International Man of Mystery".  His Google+ profile tells you very little specific about him, yet he earned a spot on Google+'s coveted  Suggested User List and has gained hundreds of thousands of followers.  He's not afraid to call out anything that bothers him, and when he does, he usually goes viral. We'll be discussing the different ways to build a following depending on your goals and the opportunities that present themselves.  I'll be adding my own perspective as a Two Time Veteran of the Google+ Algorithmic Suggested User List.It should be a very insightful discussion with a great group of people, and there will almost certainly be random moments of humor and silliness.  We hope you'll join us!#digitalmediaconnections  #DMCshow  #throughglass  Digital Media Connections #3 - Building a Following2014-02-13 02:00:0035G+
ISOOSI Research Engine3,413+Mark Traphagen joins the ISOOSI chat today at 3pm EST and we're super excited to have him on the show. Mark has been one of the people for me personally (and I know for many others too) that has really been instrumental in highlighting the benefits of Google+. But, not only the easy pickings that are clear to see. Mark evangelizes the use of Google+ as not only a business network but a social network. A social network that is on a different level to anything else we have on the interwebs. He'll be the first to say that it has given him opportunities that would never have existed before it. And I for one share that experience and couldn't agree more. All businesses can learn from this hangout... and we'll start really with the basics too. We know we have many small businesses that use ISOOSI and list their businesses in our search directory that currently have zero presence on Google+  So, some of what we talk about may be already known to those that are immersed in it on a daily basis.... but through this hangout we hope to join Mark in expressing our belief in the platform and communicate the benefits it can bring to you - from a personal AND business perspective.+Carlos Fernandes President, ISOOSIGhost Town or Land of Opportunity - Google+2014-02-11 21:00:0096G+

David Oldenburg40,386The Great Google+ Circle DebateHosted by +David Oldenburg and +Christine DeGraff   This Friday, we are taking the gloves off to debate the pros and cons of large shared circles - a hot topic here on Google+!!!DEBATING THE CONS+John Skeats  John is a writer and Google advocate. He is designated as a Top Contributor for Google+, Gmail and Mobile by Google. John has recently written several posts that have stirred up a lot of debate regarding large shared circles including: All About Shared Circles: The Good, The Bad, and The Uglyhttps://plus.google.com/+JohnSkeats/posts/MRR4JQN6YQ1Shared Circles: Think Twice Before Getting Involvedhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/+JohnSkeats/posts/YDKh7WkimrSI believe there are both good and bad shared circles, and that it is important to be selective before adding shared circles because adding the wrong circles can seriously compromise users' Google+ experience..+Keith Bloemendaal Keith is a project manager, entrepreneur and social addict. His stance on large circle sharing is pretty well known and in his words "To say I am not happy with it is an understatement." Christine & Mia4,763Join +Christine & Mia and our January guest host +Craig Fifield to interview special guest +Eli Davidson this week.Wednesday, January 15th11:30am PST/12:30pm MST/1:30pm CST/2:30pm ESTMore about our guest: +Eli Davidson is a nationally acclaimed female motivational keynote speaker, executive coach, award winning author, and corporate spokesperson. If playing small is no longer an option this show is JUST for YOU. The worst day of my life sparked $100K DAYS and is helping kids in Africa. It’s still hard to talk about it. I fell in love- in love so bad that going to Costco was like going to Paris. You get the picture. I closed my business to move to Hawaii to get married. Baby, my abs looked really good. On a Wednesday morning my fiancé woke up and announced that he didn't know if he wanted to be in a relationship with anyone. And then asked me to get on a plane and go back to LA…..that day. So, in February 2011 I didn’t know how I would be able to pay my rent. I was a mess to put it mildly. That diamond I had given back was a symbol. A diamond is the most condensed form of wealth on the planet. I had to find the diamond inside myself. What was my value and contribution and how could I help others?I am an entrepreneur so this took me on a journey of discovering the “diamond in my business “. By uncovering that value (and I will continue to be a student of this for the rest of my life) and creating those diamond systems I took my business from $4k a month to $100,000 days of sales and over $1million in sales in 2 years. Then I got to mentor other business owners to use those same systems. I guess it sounds self-serving, but that is not the intention. Women in particular have told me this story gives them the courage to stop playing small and go for it themselves. I am so excited to be on the show so I can give some tangible tools to help people now.I believe that small business can and must be a genuine engine of good works. What if every entrepreneur gave back to the planet? Now, helping business owners is a way to help make our world a better place. My life is pretty unrecognizable from a few years ago. I am still in awe. In my last event we just raised $25,000 to adopt a village and teach entrepreneurship in Africa. That is the point of all this. There is just so much good we can do together! This week's show is sponsored by:+CT Social CT Social, LLC is an interactive digital agency based in Central Florida. We provide web design and optimization, social media management and consulting, mobile apps (Apple / Android / Windows 8), and graphic design for web promotions. CT Social emphasizes a personalized approach, tailored to the needs of each individual or business we serve, and continuously aims for high standards of innovation and social integration in all projects.http://ww#15 Minutes w/Christine & Mia featuring Eli Davidson and guest host Craig Fifield2014-01-15 20:30:00126G+

Yifat Cohen68,621METal is an exclusive gathering of and for dynamic entrepreneurs and change-makers in the media, entertainment and technology space. Their events range from talks with high-profile thinkers to connecting ideas and collaboration in our community. One time sneak-view into METal's private meetingsThis week, Tim Sanders, a New York Times bestselling author, public speaker, and former Yahoo! executive will be speaking about Creating the SaleThe soul of this belief, comes from that creatives of all types have a passion for what they are doing because they are chasing the truth and doing “what’s right” with their lives. This is the fuel for their inventive thinking. They don’t deduce their way to the close, they create new worlds that bring everyone together. Much like a marketing executive or a software engineer, they bring their creativity to work everyday and find new joy in selling. Many of us have one thing in common: We are creative types trapped inside a body that is focused on a professional career, at this week’s COED METal, Featured speaker Tim Sanders will show us how to become a creative sales genius.Tim will show how the “funnel system” of sales is outdated, primal at this point in it’s assumptions. Each time we look at sales as a numbers game, we reduce people to statistics. That’s bad for our brand, future relationships and our sales-karma.This talk is perfect for any professional who faces a complicated sales process or an entrepreneur who is up against a high wall of resistance in selling his or her ideaThis week’s featured speaker is Best Selling Author Tim Sanders. Tim’s business expertise and deep research capabilities make him indispensable to some of the biggest brands in the world. He speaks for strong business relationships, both internal and external. “Get them right,” he says, “and you’ll grow your business during good and bad times alike.” Tim’s relevant point of view and reputation as a people expert makes him one of the most in demand keynote speakers on the conference and convention circuit.ENTERTAINMENTEnjoy the music of Freddie Ravel and Jhameel during this event.Freddie Ravel has two infectious passions: creating purpose-driven music and applying its proven effectiveness in helping entrepreneurs, businesses and corporations thrive. Jesse Wojdylo707,213Over the last few months I have noticed many people using Twitter to supplement Google+ or the other way around. I think there are some very effective strategies that can be used. This week we will get some of those strategies out on the table. All the information you need on Google Plus Chat is available here:http://wojdylosocialmedia.com/google-plus-chat-twitter-chat/In December of last year I really jumped on Twitter in a big way as I love the real time updates and the sports engagement. This has yet to come to Google+ so I spend my weekends chatting it up with college football and college basketball folks. While doing that I notice plenty of other awesome social media users that know and love the Google+ platform. This led me to these discussion questions:1. How long have you been active on Twitter?2. Do you use Twitter for pleasure or business? Or pain?3. Do you auto post to Twitter? Do you post Google+ Posts?4. How do you use Twitter to supplement Google+?5. Mention some active Twitter users that may enjoy Google+6. Do you want a Google Plus Chat on Christmas Eve?Please join us for #googlepluschat  on Twitter every Tuesday at 2:00 pm est. We will discuss if there will be a Christmas Eve event or not. Either way, join us this week!Google Plus Chat Twitter Chat2013-12-17 20:00:0055G+

Ronnie Bincer84,639I rarely use this "On Air" option for events... I'm trying to see if people I invite can be added to the guest list, and say Yes, No, Maybe, etc. to this invitation. I thought they could but a fellow G+er thinks that maybe they can't, so here we go!Can you help out by asking fellow testers (via the Invite more people button) to join in for a bit and get added to the guest list? You can say "yes" or "no" or "maybe" yourself too! Thanks for helping... it may help me with one more issue re. the Events tool as I continue my research on how all its bits and pieces function as I prep my eBook on this topic. This is a TEST of the 'On Air Event' functions, it is only a test ;-)2013-03-02 07:00:0060G+

Gary Matthews19,315Featured Engagers Forum!Social media at its best is a great conversation. The #FeaturedEngagersForum is a shared circle honoring people who, in my experience, practice and promote that art."Featured" means that if you’re in this circle, I'm inviting you to share a link to a favorite post of your own -- either recent or classic.Linking to a post is easy: Just click the small down-arrow at upper right. From the drop-down menu, choose “Link to post”: Copy the web address that pops up, and paste it into your comment. Please visit each other’s links. I certainly will! Please also visit each other’s profiles. I already have! All of you, in your own ways, have welcomed me to your engagement roundtable. My earnest hope is to return that favor by connecting you with others who will support you as you have supported me.This circle consists mostly of friends who interact with my non-circle posts in the form of plusses, comments, and reshares. Merely doing these things, however, won’t guarantee you a spot. Not doing them won't necessarily keep you out. To join this circle, you must join the conversation either by engaging directly, or by elevating the level of discourse in other ways. (For example, by sharing content that others might want to talk about.)==========================Some of my own recent posts:Make Your Own Animated GIFshttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/4DsG8Wtvs2UCircle Sharing on Ⓖⓞⓞⓖⓛⓔ  Ⓟⓛⓤⓢhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/+GaryMatthews/posts/bk8u3Rv8SzuIs Circle Sharing Really a Pyramid Scheme? Not if you manage shared circles my way! ≧◔◡◔≦ https://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/CV95E6zZGWrWhat Happens to Abandoned Facebook Photos? They become digital “unclaimed freight” -- and Facebook makes billionshttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/1UY88CnpfqbMy Favorite Superhero -- Lois Lane!https://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/gfpL8qx9cU6Introducing Full-Width Link ImagesGoogle Plus follows Facebook initiativehttps://plus.google.com/u/0/+GaryMatthews/posts/aRNSNuoE22AGoogle Comments Unleashedby new full-width link formathttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/C4gvwkHDnGmUse ℱᗩﬡᙅᎩ ℱOﬡ☂ᔕ and ϟ℘ℯ¢ḯαł ℭнαґα¢☂εґṧhttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/8GXkDfzzzsTA Knoxville Springtime!https://plus.google.com/u/0/+GaryMatthews/posts/XoDn4t5QM6vWhy I'm Changing My Namefrom "Gary L. Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/1)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca   #sharedcircles   #circles   #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:25:36432622658CC G+

Yeah, maybe a cop shouldn't have posted a picture of an entirely different man facing criminal murder charges, and pretended it was a picture of the young man shot by Ferguson police.  I don't pretend to know what really happened that night between the police and Mister Brown, but I know that the inability to tell one black person from another is a sign of racism.

Your Smartphone's Worst Nightmare: A Faraday Cage Cafe

A pop up Cafe in Vancouver called the Hook-Up Cafe wants you to put down your smartphone and start social networking with the person across the table from you.

Of course, they know you probably won't, so they're taking the choice out of your hands.  The Cafe is, in fact, a Faraday Cage which blocks all wireless communication, rendering your smartphone a very expensive and clunky wristwatch.

While such curiosities may become more common, this is less a trend than a narrowing of that part of the world where we aren't always-online-connected to certain niche areas.  It may become more common to see similar "unwired" establishments, where use of such devices is either blocked or just forbidden.

This will be good.  We do need excuses to unplug from our devices (since we now seem loathe to "unplug" them ourselves).  What will not happen, however, is we will not put the genie back in the bottle: the wireless, mobile, wearable, internet-of-things era, whatever you choose to call it, is here and spreading.

Humans always need safe spaces, places where the outside world is held at bay, and the Hook-Up Cafe is the latest expression of this need.

Would you dine at an establishment where you couldn't use your devices?  Why, or why not?___

Sorry, Ocean.  I care about you, a lot, but if a few phytoplankton have to die so I don't, that's just how it has to be.  Give me a better option and I'll take it.

Russian scientists have made a surprising discovery on the surface of the International Space Station: plankton.  Living plankton, apparently surviving in the near-vacuum of space around it.

That some forms of Earth life might survive in space has been known for some time, but not only is this the first proof that some organisms can survive and even develop in space flight conditions, but there is an extra twist that makes it all the more curious: no one can say exactly how the plankton got there.

Contamination is a possibility, but the source of the contaminant can only be speculated, as plankton aren't common to the region where crew and cargo delivery for the station are launched.  Rising air currents is another possibility, though it certainly challenges the imagination that even plankton can be carried so high on a breeze.  A hurricane, however, I might believe could do that, and ISS has orbited above their share of big storms.

Whatever the source, it certainly raises new implications for space exploration, and even our search for extraterrestrial life, which may yet be found in space itself and not just on alien worlds.

It may even raise questions about our own origins, and whether life on Earth was seeded from space in a process called Panspermia, which is probably one of the dirtiest-sounding words that it is completely okay to say in polite company.

The Restaurant at the End of Humanity - http://goo.gl/gsO9yX

A fully-functioning restaurant in China is run almost entirely by robots.  Robot waiters take orders and serve customers while robot chefs cook food in the kitchen.  Apart from a few humans to help with the more complex dishes, it is a fully realized robot restaurant.

The service industry, the industry we least expected to be disrupted by the new technologies, is taking its first meaningful steps towards liberating itself from its workforce, and in the process liberating them from those pesky paychecks they'd only waste on things like food and shelter anyways.

Perhaps it is time to ask ourselves if the Western style capitalism model is prepared for what is coming.  Of course, the fear of rising unemployment due to technological innovation has long been proposed, but before now at least we've never reached the tipping point.  Have we finally begun to reach it?

The answer here really depends on a lot of little things.  The general education level of a population, for example, will tend to correlate with a less-replaceable workforce.  The smarter the humans are who perform the jobs, the longer it will take for machines to be smart enough to replace them.

However, at some point, it will tip assuming all else about human beings remains equal.  One solution might be to use genetic engineering, cybernetic implants, and other technologies to "keep up", but people just don't change that fast.  We may have to consider restructuring the global economy to one where currency means little to nothing and the technology is there to provide for us and allow us to pursue higher aspirations.  A Star Trek economy, as it were.  Maybe the Geek really will inherit the Earth in the end.

Ground Control to Hello Kitty: Meow From Earth - http://goo.gl/LYwh8t

If you guessed this story has something to do with Japan before reading it, and without even knowing that Hello Kitty is a Japanese thing, give yourself a prize... but only a very small one.  Some stories just scream Japan, and this is one of them.

Japan's Prime Minister wants to show off Japanese technological prowess, their Crouching Nerd, Hidden Dragon skills.  So he has pulled out all the stops to send the iconic Hello Kitty figurine into space to take orbital selfies from a satellite.  Future Trend Alert: Earth Selfies.  Some day you won't be able to call yourself a Celebrity or Social Media Guru without one.

While it's hard not to be cynical about the rampant materialism and brand sponsorship of this Second Space Age where Americans aparently get to space by sticking out our thumbs while holding a white towel, there is an upside:

The first victims of chest bursting, acid spitting, man-eating, planet-invading, interstellar hunter-assassin aliens will be Colonel Sanders, Norton & Sons, and and the McDonalds Clan.  Their sacrifice will allow us to gather valuable intelligence without anyone getting hurt and make money at the same time.

Win-win, right?  We can just go ahead and rewrite Roddenberry a bit and we're good to go:

Whither Rich Snippets?

+AJ Kohn has dug into the issue of Rich Snippets in Google Search.  Believe it or not, Google was one of the last to adopt rich snippets.  They contradict the simplistic language of Google Search design: as much white space as possible, drawing the eye towards the focal point/points (Search Box, Organic Links, etc...).

Yet, in the end, Google did seem to be embracing them, even becoming the key player in promoting Schema.org markup.  The floodgates never opened, as they should have: to this day, an extremely small percentage of sites use structured data, and fewer use it in a way that might qualify for rich snippets.

Even so, as markup adoption has increased, especially in certain verticals (books, music, videos, etc...), it has become less rare to see multiple rich snippets for a single page of query results.

Rich Snippets in Search: A History and Where They Are Going Next

+AJ Kohn has published a masterful, comprehensive overview of rich snippets in Google search. Read it at >> http://stonet.co/1rYXS7M

Rich Snippets are visual add-ons to the regular organic search results that in some way enhance those results. Authorship photos, review stars, and video thumbnails are all examples of the great variety of rich snippets Google has tried out in its results.

The Faded Glory of Rich Snippets
But has that grand experiment, one AJ notes Google entered kicking and screaming, now run its course? It is beginning to appear that the results are in, and Google has decided that rich snippets have perhaps been overserved, and like a barroom drunk were drawing too much attention to themselves.

In his article, AJ discusses the maturing of Google's rich snippet algorithm, and why he thinks it has increasingly incorporated site quality filters, perhaps gained at least in part from Google's Panda updates. This (along with UX concerns, very likely) has led to an overall reduction in the amount of rich snippets now being shown.

Authorship As an Example
As I pointed out in my January article http://stonet.co/AuthorshipPurge, Authorship results were a prime example of this. Starting in December of 2013 Google not only began reducing the amount of Authorship rich snippets shown overall, but also instituted what I called two "classes" of Authorship. First class authors still got an author photo for most of their authorship-qualified results, while second class got only a byline.

Of course now, since the end of June, author photos have been removed altogether from non-personalized search.

Finally, AJ posits that the Knowledge Graph may be replacing much of what rich snippets once did.

Please read his article for a fascinating deep dive into the mind of Google and how search results evolve over time.

Read it at >> http://stonet.co/1rYXS7M___Whither Rich Snippets?

Yet, in the end, Google did seem to be embracing them, even becoming the key player in promoting Schema.org markup.  The floodgates never opened, as they should have: to this day, an extremely small percentage of sites use structured data, and fewer use it in a way that might qualify for rich snippets.

Even so, as markup adoption has increased, especially in certain verticals (books, music, videos, etc...), it has become less rare to see multiple rich snippets for a single page of query results.

This has proven, in some ways, to be a mixed blessing, bringing with it issues of both quality and User Interface issues (i.e. Google now has to present results in form factors from Desktop PC's and Smart TV's down to Smart Watches and Smart Glasses).

So how has Google dealt with these issues?  In some cases they've eliminated some types of snippets from all results (music results seem to fall into this category).  In other cases, snippets now only surface when certain modifiers are used, e.g. "X, Y, Z Reviews" instead of just "X, Y, Z", or by social modifiers, such as whether you engage with their linked Google+ accounts.

More interestingly, some of it is now moving into the Knowledge Panel and out of organic results.  Your "Blue Link" may not get a Star Review Snippet, but it might show up in the Knowledge Panel result for that Search instead.  This means a cleaner look, especially on smaller screens, and a focal point for the user to locate such things easily without having to "stumble" on these snippets in their organic results.

So where will Rich Snippets move to in the near future?  We can't know for certain, except that existing trends are likely to continue: fewer snippets in broader and more generic queries, fewer snippets unless you have a social connection to the querant through G+, wholesale elimination of some types of snippets, relocation of others into the Knowledge Panel.

So is structured data still important?  Absolutely.  Even if it generated no snippets at all, structured data helps Search Engines to understand "Things" and not just "Strings".

One client of mine saw a surge in traffic and conversions to their site from the simple addition of Local Business Schema markup, even though none of this markup produces rich snippets nor superior ranking for broad and generic  (but relevant) queries.

Anyone wishing to understand the role of semantics in being seen and discovered through Search Engines should buy a copy of "Semantic Search" by +David Amerland.  Semantics move us beyond keyword optimization and link building, to some degree, by actually allowing Entities and Ideas and the relationship between them to be comprehended, so that Google knows, "This is this type of business, which offers these types of services, in this location, with these hours," instead of just knowing your site keywords, anchor text keywords, links, etc...

Where rich snippets also remain available, if only for specific queries with specific modifier terms, this structured data will also lead to better Search Visibility... or at least maintain parity with Search Visibility with competitors.

So yes, structured data still matters, and snippets while less common and more centralized still lead to better results for some users and queries.

+martin shervington has an interesting response to the Ice Bucket Challenge.  While I'm not sure I agree 100%, he makes a lot of good points about the distinction between joining in a good cause because you want to support it, and doing so because of the "Trap" that if you don't, you're "Selfish/Spoiled Sport/No Fun/etc...", even though the condition of the challenge is being imposed on participants without asking permission.

I won't be joining this challenge, either.  Not necessarily for the same reasons, but because I don't believe silly stunts, viral memes, etc... should determine charitable giving.  I don't like any campaign that pins the amount of support it receives, not on generosity, but on showmanship, especially when the cost-of-entry for participating is so democratic that anyone can do it and thus kid themselves that they've made adif... more »

Why I won’t be taking the Ice Bucket challenge.
Has anyone asked you to throw ice over your head yet or pay a fine of $100?

One very friendly, kind, caring member of the Plus Your Business community member challenged me and, well, I refused. And I really like and respect the person who challenged me.

Before I get started, I know these will be the responses...

“Well, you are no fun.”

"Spoilsport."

“But it is for a good cause. Don’t you believe in giving to charities?”

“You do silly things on Google+ they involve lots of people doing campaigns…”

Sure, I take on-board all of that but something in me would not allow me to do it.

Actually, I was pulling up outside the garage when I felt a deep feeling that doing this seemingly simple act was going to be a ‘bad’ move. All I heard was someone screaming ‘noooooo’. You know, like that scene in ‘The Man with Two Brain’s’ when Steve Martin character (Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr) asks permission from his departed wife to marry again. Not seen it? Shame on you. It is awesome. 1983 at its best.

The Man With Two Brains -- just give me a sign

Needless to say, he ignored ‘the sign’.

And I even was thinking of challenging one of the Geek Beat team (which one was undecided), but alas, no.

The easiest thing for me to have done was to say yes, to pass the parcel to the next person. To allow them to be the one who has to make a choice.

“But Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Bill Gate, Mark Zuckerberg have done it…”

I don’t care who has done it. Increasing the social proof around something that I feel deeply is a bad move to do is not going to make me do it.

I’ve sensed in my life, time and time again, the tension between social expectations and my personal freedom of choice, and as a kid you didn’t want to be seen as a ‘spoil sport’, so you just did it.

And, here is what I think it going on…

The challenge is genius, but faulty:

This challenge is spreading like wild fire. Why? Because we have:

a) a very worthwhile cause (my father died of Motor Neuron Disease, so I’ve seen first hand the suffering such diseases like ALS bring)

b) a simple, replication methodology for getting involved, i.e. entry price of the ticket is simply the ice bucket

c) a mode of communication, i.e. social (inc. video), which enables ease of information transfer

d) influential people getting involved, and through this endorsement others feel they should follow suit

This really is a monster meme. Clever, but nonetheless faulty in my view.

The Outer Game:

The mechanism of a highly socialized campaign, with ‘all the big names’ doing it, is very appealing. But it is build on a few key principles:

The game forces people to buy into the conditions of the game or be shown to be non-compliant to a larger audience. In other words, it is a bind, a social trap. And as I say, a very clever one.

So let’s look at the three main responses available in this situation:

1. They accept the challenge to tip the ice bucket

2. They refuse the challenge but still ‘play the game’ and pay the fine

3. They refuse to play the game, and therefore fail to be a 'team player' or are a spoil sport in a game to which they never chose to party.

The last one may well be met with a response that they will, however, give to charity (as did Obama). This is a concessionary move to exit the relational loop in a way then allows both parties not to have lost.
No real surprise Obama refused to be put in a bind.

I am sure this could be far more eloquently explored: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory

There is also an inner game for each player…

The Inner Game of 'Stick or Twist'

I’m sure you know the card game BlackJack (or a version called Pontoon as we used to say as kids).

Imagine you have 16, that is 5 short of getting 21. Do you twist? Do you take the gamble? Possibly.

What about when you have 19 or 20?

You stick right?

Why? Because you know the odds in that game.

In a much broader and more complex social game you cannot know the odds - relationships are far more complex. So when someone challenges someone to do something in a public space, they are throwing down the gauntlet there are several ways it can go.

Let’s look at the ice bucket challenge specifically:

The person challenges someone in perceived authority or a subordinate (both of which I am sure is happening in corporates around the world right now) and in essence that person takes a gamble.

At this point their dopamine levels will kick in and they get a high. “Will they DO IT?”

Then they wait for the response. And that person either buys into the game, or not.

But either way, you wait to see if you influenced them to take the challenge.

The gamble people take is a very similar internal experience as e.g. “will they email me back?” or if I plus mention them in this Google+ post, will then arrive on my thread, or as in my ‘Why Dave? Why didn’t you click the button?” video, will they +1 my hilarious/insightful/entertaining comment.

Why? Why didn't you click the button Dave?

i.e. it is a gamble against yourself, all the time. You decide on the wave you take, and the ones you leave.

But here is the thing if you reject the games, the approaches, the requests: you are not responsible for someone else’s dopamine. They take a gamble, and you just have to do your best in your response.

It is similar as to when people may ask you to share their content, putting you (on occasions) in an awkward position. If you stand up and say 'no', they may feel bruised by this, but it is they who took the gamble. You cannot be responsible for the response people may have to your actions, e.g. the refusal to accept the bet that someone made against you without your agreement to be party to it. You can still love them, but you don’t have to play their game.

There is a social risk that needs to be insured against though, so people's response could well be to try to make the person who refuses to play 'look bad', to name and shame. Or simply, this is inherent with the rejection of the game itself - you are excluded from that tribe, but is a tribe you never choice to join.

The meme will morph. They usually do.

There is another response which is this: they change the rules of the game, and in fact because the foundations of this game were faulty i.e. ice or money, it has morphed towards ‘ice+$10’ or $100.

Already we seen the meme move from the original ‘Ice bucket or fine’ to ‘Icebucket and $10, to fine’ to Charlie Sheen’s “forget the ice, I just challenge you to donate $10,000’, which is great.

Charlie Sheen -- Ice Bucket Challenge with a BIG Twist

Well done Mr Sheen.

In a wider scheme, I do wonder about the effect of adults, with great awareness, endorsing the ice bucket action.

Money may well be raised for a cause, but I bet you this meme has hit many a school playground and is now used as a form of bullying.

Why do I think this? I’ve run many campaigns and there is always the risk of it ‘going wrong’ i.e. simply not being in your control, and this can include it being taken in a negative or abusive direction.

What is all fun and games on minute can become abusive the next, especially when it doesn’t have a very tight time constraint when the game organizing can call an end.

As such, yes, I decided not to play.

Hold on a minute, I know I’ve heard all this somewhere before. It was 1983…

That scene from War Games

Sometimes the winning move it not to play.

Seth Godin, tribes and asking permission:

For those looking more at a Google+ angle on all this, then this bit is for you...

I have enormous respect for Seth Godin and his influence upon me is daily. Between him Jay Baer, Chris Brogan and Mike Stelzner I am beating my own path in the world, and seeing who want to join the movement.

One time I saw Mike refuse to do something on stage in front of 1800 people at a conference (I think it was a dance upon the request of a speaker). At the time, I 'noted it'. And now I know why. He chose not to be forced into someone elses game.

But let me be 100% transparent once more about what I do...

Myself and the team Google+ to build the communities; along the way I build my personal brand, and to connect with likeminded people with whom I can collaborate.

As you may have noticed, I give you free content, a lot of it. In return I do expect something though. I expect you to ‘tell your friends’, or in G+ speak, +1/comment/share, and this is what naturally happens when you like something. This will signal to Google’s algorithm that this content is ‘WOW’ and should surface in Google Search. This is then found by people interested in those topics, and who visit the websites, and maybe even sign up and buy something from myself and the community members involved.

To help this process I create content that many people would sell, and then give it away for free to people. Very often I will create a circle of people who are interested in previewing the content, which brings them together and gives them a bonus in return for me being allowed to notify them when the big post goes live. I kind of a bribe, yes.

The method I often us is to ask people “Who would like to join a circle for content around e.g. Google+ Marketing” i.e. they opt in.

In other words, I ask your permission would you like to join in. Or, alternatively, you follow me on Google+ by adding me into circles and you choose whether or not to engage on my content.

The ice bucket challenge approach is contrary to the one I tend to take.

I believe the permission marketing approach is so much more healthy than a meme which could easily turn into a mechanism for dominance, creating a social trap for those who are unable to transcend the emotional discomfort and reject the game outright.

And sure, they have raised $15 million+, but it has been raised this approach may not benefit the charity long term. As the L.A.Times says, “The concern of philanthropy experts is that high-profile fundraising campaigns like this end up cannibalizing other donations” and continues “You want to contribute to the fight against ALS, great. But if you're doing it just because you saw or heard about Bill Gates, Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake or Ethel Kennedy dumping ice water on their head, maybe you should give a bit more thought to where you donate your money.”

Conclusion:

The memes we create, join, and perpetuate are the ones which will determine the cultural norms of the future i.e. what is ‘ok’ and what is not ‘ok’, which is why I’ve chose not to put people over a barrel, well, under an icy cold bucket.

I also owe a huge thank you to the person who challenged me, you know who you are; you have enabled me to say express something that would not have otherwise been said. It is much appreciated, truly.

My final words are this: Donate to charity. A charity to which you relate.

I’ve just donated here: http://www.mndassociation.org/

Then invent your own games. Find those who want to play of their own free will.
And let everyone leave when they want, hopefully with a smile on their face.

Social Media can connect us with the world, but it can also connect us to phony worlds where we think we're doing valuable things but really aren't.

Second Life springs to mind, a world where (as I learned while running a small business selling digital goods for avatars on there years ago) people can pretend to be what they aren't or can never be in real life, where nary a woman has wrinkles or a man a beer gut, where all homes are huge and luxurious, and where the most elite of goods, events, and occasions are available for a matter of dollars.

I'm not going to go as far as to say, as some people will, that Social Media and the Internet and Real Life exist on opposite sides of unbridgeable chasm... this might have been fairly true at one time, but now the goods, services, and connections the internet enables clearly overlap between the virtual and physical domains.

Netflix, for example, is the modern "Evening Sitting Around Listening to the Radio/Watching TV" for many families.  Social networks sometimes connect real people in ways they never could have before, even helping them find each other in disasters.  And job seekers, these days, have little choice but to use the internet as one tool in their hunt.

But sometimes, social media and the internet can create a synthetic reality, a Saccharine Self that feels real except when properly compared with reality, and I view things like the Ice Bucket Challenge as an example of that.

Why would I?  No one has ever tried to convert me to Unicornism or suggested my lack of a firm belief either way would condemn me to some torturous afterlife.  No one is lobbying for Unicorn Prayer in School.  I doubt even the Supreme Court of the United States would side with employers discriminating about healthcare coverage on the basis of what the Unicorns think is morally appropriate.  I can safely say, I have not spent a second of my life contemplating the reality or non-reality of Unicorns.  I'm not per se agnostic about it... it just isn't something I feel worth having an opinion on.

Perhaps what they wanted to hear was for me to acknowledge that Unicorns are certainly not a known entity in our world.  You can't go see one at a zoo, for example.  Then again, you can't go see a Great White Shark at a zoo.  Could there be some unknown one-horned horse running around out there undiscovered?  Unlikely but not impossible.  Could there have ever been a one-horned horse or horse-like creature, possibly extinct now or known under a different name (e.g. Rhinoceros) which was the basis of the myth?  Possibly.  I can't rule that out, at any rate.  If a real creature formed the basis of the myth, then regardless if it was some other creature being misidentified, unicorns "existed".

And honestly, aren't I putting way more thought into this right now than anyone should?  Why even ask me for an opinion on the existence or non-existence of a creature that seems to have no meaning to my life or the life of anyone I will ever know?

So, no, I don't have an opinion on whether Unicorns exist.  And I don't plan to have one any time soon, unless the adherants of Unicornism get better at political lobbying or start challenging the role of science in explaining the origin and history of life, the universe, and horses.

I'm content, for now at least, to let Unicorns remain plot devices in fantasy films starring Tom Cruise.___

+David Amerland's latest +Sunday Read is ostensibly about music... but what I took from it was this:

To show people the universe in a way they've never been shown it before, be it through music or math or paintings or anything else... it helps to have experienced it differently.

A Beethoven's deafness, far from being a challenge to overcome, can in fact be the very basis of why they make you hear music in a way your ears have never heard it before.

Vincent Van Gogh, due to his madness, saw the world very differently from the rest of us.  There's every reason to believe that his painting Starry Night accurately depicted how he saw the night sky.

Albert Einstein had essentially no corpus collosum... the area of the brain mediating between the right and left hemispheres... and his ability to "visualize" physics through "thought experiments"... more »

I have always found it fascinating how it is our imperfections the limitations we feel we have little control over that drive us to strive harder. Would John Milton (http://goo.gl/hW7n9) have worked so hard or had been so bold as to challenge church dogma in Paradise Lost (http://goo.gl/mVRSY) if he were not going blind? Each work wrested from his mind, barely visible on the paper he was committing it to? And in that moment I feel he thought just how unjust it must be, Lucifer, unlike man (who Biblically was created with free will) had no choice. No more choice than Milton himself being condemned in darkness.

Would Homer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer) had been as great as he was, had he been sighted, or Beethoven (http://goo.gl/TxQ5) composed music as logically sound had he not lost his hearing?

Losing your sight is always a tragic event (http://goo.gl/qygJtA) but it’s on hearing I want to focus today. I discovered I was tone deaf (http://goo.gl/LiiuO) when at the compulsory music lessons, at school I was unable to hear the difference in adjacent notes in piano keys. My teacher (unable to understand that a melody’s rhythm fled my head, dancing maddeningly just out of reach the moment it stopped playing) thought it was simply a question of drumming it into me by making me listen to notes and tunes again and again. Music was the one class we were not graded on. So I skipped, playing hooky those two hours a week and spending the time in the school library diving into any book that took my fancy.

With the world of sound closed to me I became almost obsessed with its meaning. I knew music had a physiological effect. I would meditate better to oriental music or train harder if I played the Rockie soundtrack in the background at full volume (we had only LPs and tapes back then). The Victorian’s notion of “The Music of the Spheres” http://goo.gl/ewswN fascinated me.

The universe, they felt, danced along to a hidden score. A celestial tune of sorts that was underpinned by mathematics. The orbital resonance of celestial bodies (http://goo.gl/Q6znAj) for instance, could be understood as a dance in space.

Being naturally gifted in writing my disability drove me into mathematics. Here was something that, though did not come easy, I could bludgeon with my mind and unlock. By association, I felt I could experience then some of the underlying unity of things (http://goo.gl/KH2C) that music made everyone else think about.

That simple bloody mindedness led me to look at many other fields, choosing Chemical Engineering at university and combining chemistry and physics, mathematics and quantum mechanics, biology and molecular architecture which, I suppose, explains my unorthodox, driven thinking.

Driven to distraction by the hermetically closed door of musical notes I felt I could use other entrances to enter our universe. Ever since reading how Leonardo da Vinci used studies of the trajectories of mortar shots (http://goo.gl/qOMAjp) to not only improve ballistics but also to better carve the fall of a flowing sleeve’s creases on a statue I knew that the world is just data. The means of how we access it may be different but there is a way for each of us to access it all.

Maddeningly (and I say that with a smile, these days) it can all also be translated into music. A share by +Mark Vang  of a sound installation translates into music the shape of clouds (http://goo.gl/XQx3XT) which could take #cloudwars into a new realm entirely.

Space itself has a sound: http://goo.gl/sBlK96. A harmonic that makes sense because the mathematical frequencies underpinning it follow a logical path. The Victorians still exert their influence upon us as a BBC program presented by Melvyn Bragg - http://goo.gl/luxnmP,  shows (you will have to scroll down, right click and choose ‘Save As’ to download the file and play it – it’s aptly titled The Music of the Spheres).

The beauty of mathematics and its connection to music and the amazing facts that join up to reveal greater truths is revealed in a TED Talk by Scott Rickard: http://goo.gl/1sh3C0. Of course the moment we link reality, the world, mathematics and music we are only one short step away from talking about Artificial Intelligence (http://goo.gl/pBkj0V) and its ability to compose music.

Over at the singularity hub there is a robotic quintet that composes and plays its own music (http://goo.gl/D5SsM) and the videos are well worth watching. And just in case you thought machines can be only experimental in the music they compose here’s a Bach style composition that held me in thrall while I listened: http://goo.gl/HFkr1Z.

When machines can do what we can so much better (even when we do not suffer from disabilities like my own) the question arises as to what is it exactly that makes us human? http://goo.gl/d3TTBY. What makes us special?

Not sure I can easily answer that one when I just look at the flow of data all around me and then the data being processed within me. It all feels a little like data doing different things (http://goo.gl/iGxlJ) except that I did not accept my limitation. Faced with the impossibility of overcoming it I directed my energies in cracking it in other ways.

There is perhaps a stubbornness to accept defeat in that approach that may be hard to program because it defies logic. As human beings we are highly illogical, our actions, thoughts and ideas, making sense only through the intellectualisation of hindsight. So while we may be data, maybe we are as ‘ugly’ and disorganised as Rickard’s sonic ping. And just like it we may be able to probe the world, our presence bringing to light the aspects hidden within it. Our ‘noise’ part of a grander harmony (http://goo.gl/edUJ) flowing across all of time and space.

This has been a broader, slightly more eclectic Sunday Read than usual. I hope the coffee’s on and the sugary treats are piled high. We are all still, very much in summer mode (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). I hope you have one awesome Sunday, wherever you are.

#davidamerlandsundayread  ___+David Amerland's latest +Sunday Read is ostensibly about music... but what I took from it was this:

To show people the universe in a way they've never been shown it before, be it through music or math or paintings or anything else... it helps to have experienced it differently.

A Beethoven's deafness, far from being a challenge to overcome, can in fact be the very basis of why they make you hear music in a way your ears have never heard it before.

Vincent Van Gogh, due to his madness, saw the world very differently from the rest of us.  There's every reason to believe that his painting Starry Night accurately depicted how he saw the night sky.

Albert Einstein had essentially no corpus collosum... the area of the brain mediating between the right and left hemispheres... and his ability to "visualize" physics through "thought experiments" remains legendary.

While we can't all have physiological factors that incline us to a different view of reality, we can all cultivate "Thinking Different".  It is only in doing so, in fact, that we can show the world in a different way to others.

Senility as Sainthood

"I now have a theory that our existence, as a whole, is an organism that is very old--a globular thing within a starry shell, afloat in a super-existence in which there may be countless other organisms--and that we, as cells in its composition, partake of, and are ruled by, its permeating senility. The theologians have recognized that the ideal is the imitation of God. If we be a part of such an organic thing, this thing is God to us, as I am God to the cells that compose me.

Marketers need to have more of a sense of humor.  Online marketers especially.  Some of the "backlash" you see against marketers on social media is because they take themselves too seriously, in a place where taking yourself too seriously is close cousin to "Winning!" (http://goo.gl/6DJPPA)

In all the technical jargon-because that's really what it is, the technical jargon of a career specialization-about viral this, influencer that, and the abuse of words like authenticity until it's hard to say it without sounding inauthentic, what a lot of people see is basically this...

The Universe is the original Mother of Weird.  Ancient humans had no choice but to recognize this, as they knew very little about how anything worked.  Fire, Water, Earth, and Air were strange elementals; the Planets were Wandering Gods; eclipses were Dragons swallowing the Sun.  These were guesses, of course, and ultimately our first attempt to explain things.

We've gotten a lot better at explaining stuff, but only compared to those who came before us.  That doesn't mean the universe isn't just as weird as it ever was.  Every mystery solved just opens new ones, and the cycle of weird continues, as in the following stories.

We've gotten a lot better at explaining stuff, but only compared to those who came before us.  That doesn't mean the universe isn't just as weird as it ever was.  Every mystery solved just opens new ones, and the cycle of weird continues, as in the following stories.

Anniversary: The Big Wow! Signal - http://goo.gl/dqd0fW

On August 15, 1977, Professor Jerry Ehman of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Project at Franklin University, Columbus, Ohio was on the night shift at "The Big Ear" Radiotelescope when something happened that almost changed the world.

For 72-seconds, the Radiotelescope received a signal from a location in the Constellation Sagittarius (it's impossible to be much more precise, unfortunately), which bore all the expected signals of an extraterrestrial intelligent radio signal.  Amazed by the readings, Ehman penned the word, "Wow!" on the printout, which is why it has become known as "The Big Wow!".

The signal remains a mystery.  While possibilities have been proposed that can't be ruled out, no particularly compelling explanation has ever emerged, except the E.T. Hypothesis, which unfortunately for SETI can't be proven.  The signal has never repeated at that location, which skeptics point to as evidence against the E.T. Hypothesis, while others point out that humans have sent similar non-repeating signals into space.

I, for one, Want to Believe.  If we weren't alone, and if we knew this for certain, it might change so many things, expand our horizons beyond the petty squabbles that divide us and give us higher aspirations to attain to.  Like being worthy of contact.

Perhaps somewhere, in the general area of Sagittarius, an alien race that long ago sent out a signal into the universe is awaiting a reply, hoping for the same thing their counterparts on Earth hope for, reaching out towards each other like orphans in the dark.

The Universe's Missing Light - http://goo.gl/el8QHw

There's a lot less light in the universe than there should be, according to some astronomers, five times less in fact, especially in the ultraviolet range.

Where it gets weirder, is that this disconnect between models and observations only exists in the "nearby universe" (the well-studied part), and not in the far distant universe, which is the part that gives us a glimpse into the early universe.

Dark Matter, the ultimate physics Fudge Factor that manages to be everything and nothing, has been suggested.  When dealing with complicated mysteries of physics, introducing variables based on unknown theoretical forms of matter with magical properties can only make matters simpler, right?

Dark Matter, for the layman, is a form of matter that is required by some models of theoretical physics to account for the mysterious "Missing Matter" that makes up 90% of our mass.  It has never been seen, or touched, or measured, yet without it the math just doesn't work out.  It is a chimera which, if it doesn't exist, has been brilliantly wished into existence by physicists.

My theory is that the Dark Matter sucked up the light and got fat from it and that's where all the missing mass went.  Therefore, logically, we need to put the universe on a diet in order to avoid the "Big Crunch" discussed in our next story.  I'll be awaiting my nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physics any day now.

Lost Einstein Paper Predicts Big Crunch OF HORRIBLE DOOM - http://goo.gl/6nvsDH

The end is nigh!  Repent, sinners, of your misdeeds, for Einstein predicted the eventual destruction of the universe in a "Big Crunch", in an unpublished paper in 1931 during a three-month visit to the United States.  Well... the "Crunch" won't happen for billions of years.  Still, can't hurt to brush up on your sackcloth and ash making skills now.

Inspired by Edwin Hubble during his visit that year, he hastily wrote a paper describing a model of the universe beginning with the Big Bang and ending in a Big Crunch.  He wasn't actually the first or the last to propose this, but he got there early, and that counts for something.

So, this being Einstein, he must have been right, right?  Well, maybe not.  His paper predicted the actual size of the universe, at 10^8 light-years, based on an estimation that the universe is 10-billion years old.  Current models usually put the age of the universe at 13-billion years.  So, he might have been just a bit off.  Too bad he didn't know about Dark Matter.  That stuff does wonders.

Everyone is allowed to have an off week, so we'll forgive old Al, who holds a special place in the hearts of millions and who belongs to the pantheon of scientists who changed the world.

This is why debates on Twitter are so lousy.  With everyone trying to be variously pithy, witty, and insightful in bursts of 140-characters, everyone ends up sounding like a megalomaniacal solopsist.  Then they have to explain their bad jokes.

Which social network do you use to get your news?

Maybe I've just old school, but I don't depend on social networks to provide me with full coverage of the world's most important headlines. However, if I was only interested in Apple product launches and Android system updates, I would totally make the switch...

There are days when the news is weird even by the usual standards of weirdness.  Today is one of those days, and so I bring you the following weird stories, without further ado.

The Man in the Moon Photobombs NASA - http://goo.gl/3atCoK

YouTube user Wowforreel, whose user name just screams "Take me seriously!", claims to have found proof of alien life.  So what type of evidence does he have?  Debris from a spaceship?  DNA from an alien lifeform?  A leaked classified memo from the Pentagon discussing options for how to deal with the "Alien Threat"?

No.  In fact, he claims to have spotted, in a NASA photo of the lunar surface (as seen on Google Moon, where all breakthroughs in the Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence naturally take place these days), a humanoid being casting a shadow.

No.  In fact, he claims to have spotted, in a NASA photo of the lunar surface (as seen on Google Moon, where all breakthroughs in the Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence naturally take place these days), a humanoid being casting a shadow.

No, there is nothing especially weird about the image, and yes I've looked at it.  Lots of things cast lots of weird shadows on the moon, whose surface lacks any context by which we usually identify things.  Lunar astronauts have told tales of chasing "rocks" they thought were nearby, only to discover they were distant large boulders.  And, of course, the occasional rock spider monster thing. (Spoilers: I just told you the plot of Apollo 18.  Believe me, I saved you two hours of your life.  Watch Apollo 13 again, instead.)

What's strange is that you can get millions of hits on YouTube by pointing at a blurry shadow on the nondescript background of another world and calling it an alien.  I suppose this is no weirder, however, than seeing Jesus in a tortilla shell, though that rarely seems to go viral except to make fun of it.

Most likely, this is a prosaic object casting a shadow that happens to be vaguely, but only vaguely, humanoid in form.  Or, possibly, it may be The Loneliest Astronaut, still hoping that someone will come and rescue him.  The Lonely Astronaut 01: Pilot (720p)

Either way, if Michael Jackson's estate ever find the being casting this shadow, they are going to be in for some royalty payments over violating his 'Moon Walking' trademark.

Chinese Demons Big on Phone Privacy - http://goo.gl/MKdMlF

A Christian cult in China, calling themselves The Church of the Almighty God (emphasis on The, I assume), is murdering people who refuse to go along with their recruitment efforts.

The latest incident involved a group of the cult members savagely beating a woman to death at McDonalds for not giving up her phone number.  Not to worry, though, as cult member Zhang Lidong informs us, "I beat her with all my might and stamped on her too. She was a demon. We had to destroy her."

Unfortunately, as we all know, demons never lie, so there was no way for her to give them a fake number.  Because Science!  They're also notoriously privacy conscious, especially since last year's docu-drop on Wikileaks, which compromised the security of Hell's undercover agents in the field.

CHINESE BONUS ROUND: If you've always wondered what it would be like to a corpse and be incinerated in a crematorium, China has what you've always been looking for: a Death Simulator.  - http://goo.gl/9AfvFu

Now you, too, can enjoy the existential agony of simulated death normally reserved for Prisoners of War!

Worst.  Identity Theft.  EVER! - http://goo.gl/ZrNBsB

A Slidell, Louisana woman attempted to take her deceased sister's identity when she tried to check into a local hospital using the deceased's Medicaid coverage.

Her plan was foolproof, except for one small detail: she was wearing the Memorial T-Shirt for her sister, with her name on it.  Suffice it to say, this Female Criminal Mastermind in the mold of a Bonnie Parker was observed by some cunning sleuths working at the hospital.

These Sherlocks of Slidell, with the aid of the local constabulary, foiled her devious scheme to get well and made sure Miss Diondre Jones will receive a dose of cold hard justice.  Perhaps now she'll think twice the next time she thinks about getting sick.

To be fair, even though health care may hardly be the first thing that pops to mind when we think of a criminal enterprise, there's a principle here: you just can't be that stupid and expect to get away with it.  The education system may be failing, but gosh it all we will at least raise smart criminals.  Her arrest was the equivalent of Flunking the Final Exam with a score of 0.

When I was a young child, I loved comic books, and in comic books, as the good guys get smarter, so too do the bad guys.  Batman has his Joker, Superman his Lex Luther, and of course Cat Woman is eternally plagued by Shiny-Thing-on-a-String Man, whose hypnotic powers she can't resist.

In real life, though, it seems that Law and Order, and Forensic Science, advances, while criminals remain as stupid as they ever were (excluding some criminal organizations, perhaps).  In fact, if anything, they may actually be getting dumber, and thus easier to catch and punish.  Score one for Survival of the Fittest.

As a fan of duplicating some content from my blog on G+, this is very important information.  Though to be honest, I'd probably do it anyways, because you guys are awesome!

Can Google Plus Cause Duplicate Content Problems?

Everyone knows public Google+ posts are indexed by Google and may show up in search. So if you post the same content here that is on your site, have you created a potential duplicate content issue?

Duplicate content on the web can be an issue because Google has to decide which copy of the same content should be highest ranked, and that may not be the site to which you wanted to drive traffic.

Find out whether Google+ can cause duplicate content problems at >> http://stonet.co/GPlusDuplicateContent

+Gina Fiedel waxes about the need to maintain consistency for your brand across multiple internet channels.

You need to know what your brand is, first and foremost, and then make sure that you project it through every channel of marketing, advertising, and engagement.

As the Bard wrote, "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."

#Branding   #BrandingStrategy   #BrandingTips

Your Brand Consistency & Basic Core Values
Go Hand And Hand

What makes you who you are? Or even who you think you are or who you hope to be?

Decide what that is and then stick with what you learn. Building brand awareness and trust requires consistency.

It was during a walk in the woods that I was first thinking about writing this and as usual in my life of smallish uncanny phenomenon, I came down a slope to the dry creek-bed and was faced with a small group of boulders with this cairn atop the largest one (see post photo). What struck me about it was the impossibility of its balance. The shapes of the rocks were all so different from each other it seemed it would topple any moment. But somehow, even with all these seemingly distinct elements, it was organized successfully to make a tower of sameness and logic. Rock solid - with a potential for precariousness but a show of consistency. It made me think further about what we are balancing in our traverse of the landscapes of social media. How do we coalesce all the aspects of ourselves and our businesses into the representation of a single entity that makes sense and has consistency?

We take all our seemingly disparate parts and present them as whole. And it works.

Similar to the rocks that make up the cairn, our parts may not seem to fit or compliment each other, but in fact, there is a perfection in their imperfection. A relationship binding them together, creating an interdependence that is complex and real. When we can get in touch with the pieces, we can make a meaningful amalgamation that will serve us.

It's Everywhere We Turn!

When it comes to brand consistency in social media, the opportunity to show up and take part is sometimes overwhelming. We are blasted with possibilities and faced with an imperative to make countless choices about where, when and how to spend our time and efforts. We have options to jump into conversations and remark on content, all the while wading through the noise looking for value and a place to add in. The volume of what’s available at all times is astounding and if we want to participate [we know we need to participate] that means we’re showing up in multiple places under multiple circumstances every day.

This increases our chances of not being consistent in how we present ourselves and represent our business. And the danger in that is palpable.

Proceed with caution but without sacrificing flexibility.

It’s fine to experiment and to change things up but your voice, your tone, your character and your core values shouldn’t be compromised.

And What About Our Own Content We Are Producing And The Engagement That Follows From That?

This is element in the equation that sets the stage. Small business, bigger business and even miniscule solo micro-business. We all face the same dilemma. Make careful choices for the content you share. Be clear and intentional about your purpose and always stay mindful of the brand umbrella under which you wish to stay. You want everything you create and endorse to make sense within your brand identity. It’s okay to share a certain percentage of personal posts if you are your brand (solopreneurs or micro-business owners), but even those need to enhance the overall picture of who you are and add to the familiarity, expectations and trust you are working to earn. If you are employed by a brand you are representing, this will not be appropriate and you will keep your personal activities online separate.

As any human being will likely tell you, it’s close to impossible to avoid having differing tones, moods, styles or even personas in the different areas of life yet whether you are an individual representing a brand you work for or a solopreneur representing your own brand, in order to have a strong brand presence the need to maintain consistency stands true. Be intentional.

Be mindful of your actions and your words. And always be yourself (or your brand).

By being consistent and having continuity, we offer our audience and customers a chance to get to know us, learn to trust us and by our actions we reveal the personality and culture of our brand. They are transparent and available to scrutiny, like and dislike. Admittedly, it's a challenge because the temptations to stray are tremendous and it takes some discipline.

How Do We Manage Brand Consistency?

Find your Inner North Star. Snuggle up to your core values (or your company's core values).

You’ll need to be intimate with those core values for a guide to use along the way. Look for the patterns in your mission, goals, beliefs, behavior, your style and what really matters to you and your company. It can teach you a lot. Define what you stand for, how you serve and what you do best.

Examine:
~ The initial purpose of starting your company, its roots and motivations
~ You company values and what you stand for
~ What you do
~ The things that set you apart and define how you’re different from your competitors
~ How you go about expressing these things
~ Your brand “voice”
~ Your brand “tone”: How do you come across when you speak to people in social media?

If we don’t have the courage to look at our inner ballast, the courage to stay and be present with what’s real inside the container of our brand then we can’t extend it out to the public arena. It’s with that foundation that we have the chance to illustrate our core values and enact them, prove who we are by our actions and our words, that’s where we have the chance to earn trust, where we maintain our appropriate level of transparency and that all of it wraps up into the ball of our brand identity.

Please!! I hope you'll take the jump to read the full article. You'll be missing some of the juicy bits if you don't.

Luckily, the news cycle has been a bit more generous lately to our Reticulan, or possible Saurian, or maybe Nordic Type (depending on who you ask in the right internet forums) friends from the stars.  So I give you today's stories of the weird, which are truly out of this world.  (Yes, even I cringed when I said that.  Forget I said that.)

The Aliens and the Chess Master - http://goo.gl/RzoIYP

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov defeated chess legend Garry Kasparov, August 11th, retaining his position as head of the World Chess Federation.  No, not in a Chess Match.  No one elects Presidents on the basis of chess matches.  Federations members held a vote, where Kirsan easily won by 100-61.

Kasparov challenged Ilyumzhinov because of his openness about allegedly being "abducted" by aliens.  Though, abducted might be the wrong term.  Mister Ilyumzhinov is the former President of the Russian Republic of Kalmykia (which in itself sounds like the name of an alien planet).

He claims that in 2010 he met extraterrestrials in Moscow, communicated with them, went aboard their ship, and even went into space.

He appears to be quite sincere in this assertion, and it can hardly be said he's a nobody or a man of weak or feeble mind.  That doesn't rule out a variety of attention-seeking or role playing personality disorders, but if he manifests a disorder in any other way there appears to be no evidence of it.

Of course, one high-profile, seemingly stable and reliable witness with only his word as evidence has never proven anything, and this doesn't and won't prove alien abduction is real.

What it does do, though, is it gives me hope, hope that some day, man will boldly go where no one has gone before.  And by all that is good and decent in this universe, Captain Kirk will defeat Spock at 3D Chess, and all will be right with the world.

Chile Says UFO's OK (That Rhymes if You Say It Right) - http://goo.gl/LO0jMs

Chile's Civilian Aviation Department takes a very different approach to the UFO subject than the Federal Aviation Authority of the United States takes.  The FAA tends to disavow UFO's, and to explain them away when credible reports appear from pilots, aviation crew, and passengers.  Few report them, in fact, for fear of having their flight status challenged on psychological grounds.

The Civilian Aviation Department, however, admits that UFO's exist.  I don't mean they admit that some flying objects are unidentified, they admit that UFO's which defy any conventional explanation exist, and are sometimes encountered by flight crew and passengers.  Sometimes this can be a tense experience, especially when the objects are very close to the aircraft.

Their conclusion?  UFO's seem to pose no direct threat to aircraft, but the pilots can sometimes put themselves and their craft in danger when they react to them.  The natural reaction of a pilot is to react somehow, to compensate, to turn away from immanent threat, but in some cases this instinct may be counter-intuitive.

Whatever UFO's are, if we assume a vastly superior flight capability, then a 'close approach' by our standards might be easy clearance for them.  Even if you doubt the existence of such objects, wouldn't you rather your pilot know how to react when and if one does approach?  Hope for the best, plan for the worst, right?

Area 51 is Back, Baby! - http://goo.gl/ZVjt1g

Area 51, Dreamland, the Wet Dream of Conspiracy Theorists, that place That You Didn't See, Understand? (Neuralizer).  Whatever you call it, it oozes weird.  Its very existence was denied for decades, even as you could clearly see it with the naked eye and encounter its military patrol guarding its official unofficial boundaries.

The U.S. Government finally admitted its existence in the 90's, after the creators of Independence Day cleverly exposed their plot.  Or maybe that was just when they realized cameras existed and were cheap and good.  A few years later and Google would have ended up exposing their not-so-secret secret base, anyways.

We know with some certainty that the base has been used for testing experimental aircraft.  Its location, which was once so remote and secure, is now easy enough to observe that they may not see quite as much action as they used to, though not if new satellite photos are to be believed.

It appears Area 51 is in Expansion Mode, with new hangars being built.  We can safely assume it isn't Under New Management, unless the aliens have taken over, in which case I volunteer to join the squad that liberates them.  I gained a lot of experiencing battling alien takeovers of Area 51 in arcades when I was a kid.

While it would be tempting to take the easy road and assume they could be testing experimental aircraft, as we know they do, instead I think it would be useful to ascribe it to some elaborate plot.

So I'm calling it now: President Obama shot down an alien spaceship and this is where they're testing aircraft based on its design.  It was an accident, to be fair.  It got in his way while he was skeet shooting.  One occupant of the craft survived and was rescued by a hopeful young boy, and with the help of Radio Shack components and a flying bicycle managed to return to his people.

Creating Original Content on Social Media Sites

When a social platform gives you tools for content creation, and not just content sharing, you should create original content on these platforms.

Be this as longform Google+ posts with original content, which +David Amerland and +Mick Sharpe are so well known for (among many others), YouTube Videos, the LinkedIn Publishing platform, etc..., use the tools given to you.  I call this "Social Blogging", but whatever you call it, you need to do it.  Your audience is on the social networks, as in on them, not simply waiting to be referred elsewhere to your newest blog post.

Why Original Content is the Solution to Wider Brand Reach

Here is the case FOR digital sharecropping.

Once you've established your homebase, (i.e. your blog), creating original content inside of platforms such as YouTube, LinkedIn and here on Google+ is actually a best practice.

Do you publish original content on social media? Where?

Why the statue was fitted with these Divine Chompers, perhaps no one will ever know.  It joins the ranks of antiques containing real human body parts, including an extensive parade of Medieval manuscripts bound in human flesh (http://goo.gl/za6isc).

We can neither confirm nor deny rumors, which we are just now inventing at this moment, that if you place one of these teeth beneath your pillow before going to bed, the Tooth Fairy will forgive all your sins and leave you a quarter.

Priests Try to Evict' Squatting' Demon - http://goo.gl/aMHFnR

A Liverpool woman desperately wants to rid herself of a demonic being she claims has taken residence in her spare room.  While unwelcomed demon guests would be a bother for anyone, Miss Lorna McDonald has another reason for wanting it gone: she is being charged a 'bedroom tax' for living in an under-occupied building, and can't get anyone to move into the spare room as long as her infernal house guest is crashing there.

So what's a landlord to do?  Call in the Priests, of course.  Unfortunately, so far, this doesn't seem to have been effective, as of course it wouldn't be, since the Priests forgot the first rule of evictions: you have to give the tenant 30-days written notice.  I guess even angels won't enforce it until then.

Unfortunately for the demon, squatter's rights don't apply in this case, as courts do not recognize the existence of the supernatural.  Poor little guy is probably just trying to survive after he lost his job during the '08 Economic Crisis when Congress refused to bail out Hell because several known terrorists live there.  It isn't his fault we humans don't understand his sense of humor.

Bobbie Peeler and the Last Crusade - http://goo.gl/4etDxt

British Police raided a pub in Herefordshire, England in search of the holy grail.  No, this isn't the plot of a new BBC Mini Series, or a poorly executed remake of Indiana Jones, this actually happened.

Police were searching for a stolen artifact called the Nanteos Cup, rumored by people with absolutely no archaeological backgrounds or historical knowledge of 1st Century Judean artifacts, to be the Holy Grail of Christ, brought to the British Isles by Joseph of Arimathea.

Naturally ancient Britain was a hot tourist destination for the Judean people, and Joseph likely misplaced it while trying to snap a selfie in front of the future site of the Tower of London.  It then passed through various collections until, so police believed, some Pub Goers decided to nick it for themselves.

As one might expect, the Grail was not found and remains elusive, though some people say on still nights, if you listen very closely to the sound of the wind, you can still hear it poisoning Nazis and keeping Sean Connery young to this very day.

'twas just a matter of time... A New SEO Business: Selling SSL/HTTPS Links

As you remember, Google launched a new algorithm for HTTPS ranking where they give you a tiny boost in the rankings for going HTTPS/SSL with your site. http://tgcafe.it/1smhtTb

Not surprisingly, it didn't take long for "SEOs" to start selling just that, "hundred of incoming links from ssl google certified sites!"

Need I say DON'T even think about it? Considering so many sites were hit by Penguin, I really do...

If you don't understand what it really means when they say Robin Williams suffered depression, you should read this.

Depression isn't "feeling a bit blue" and it isn't "being down in the dumps".  In fact, true depression is the opposite of that: you can't feel ANYTHING the way you should, yet tortuously enough you can feel that something is wrong with you for not feeling anything the way you should.

Depressed people aren't sad.  People who kill themselves in a depressed state aren't "cowards" trying to "escape" something.  The most basic joie de vivre most of us feel deep down inside, even when on the surface we feel like miserable gargage unfit for this world, is absent.

Hey everybody,

I think it would be cool if you took a few minutes of your day today and read this. I'm probably not the first person to suggest it, and I will likely not be the last. Even if you have already seen this before, maybe consider taking a few minutes and reading it again. It's really good stuff, I found it to be incredibly helpful the first time I read it. ___If you don't understand what it really means when they say Robin Williams suffered depression, you should read this.

Some people are prone to this... which let's be clear is a medical phenomenon, and not merely a mood... regularly, but nearly anyone can be triggered into a depressive state.

This article very much describes what I felt during a bad period many years ago following a breakup.  The breakup itself cost me a lot... a relationship, a step child, a family, and a home... but factors related to the relationship which had been OK before the breakup were suddenly devastating, like knowing I had left college close to graduation and left behind a professor who wanted me in his grad program, or being out-of-work because I had left a part time job I loved with room for promotion to take a full time job I hated and soon lost due to layoffs to help support her.  I also had to rebuild what friendships I could, as she had systematically alienated me from much of my support system (and I had allowed her to), but only a few were still capable of repair.

While seriously considering killing myself was never an issue, thoughts of death and dying as some relief came unbidden, with terrifying intensity, seemingly the only real-feeling thing at times.  I couldn't sleep more than 20-minutes at a time, had lost my appetite to a dangerous degree (going whole days without a bite of food), and my whole mind and body felt like the exposed nerve of a tooth.

My "corn under the fridge" moment came when I saw a severely clinically depressed man at a hospital.  It was clear that, whereas I felt mentally and emotionally like a man walking shoulder-deep in water, this man looked like his mind and emotions were at the bottom of a deep ocean trench.  He wore nothing but a hospital gown, because of course they don't let depressed patients keep their clothes lest they hang themselves with shoelaces or their belt.

I saw him and I thought, "Either you're snapping out of it, or that's you in a month."  And like the author of this article, I began to laugh in an infinite loop, because I suddenly realized just how much I enjoyed being allowed to have shoelaces and belts.  So, I "snapped out of it", but that is nowhere near as easy as people make it sound when they're repeating the cliche ad nauseum.

Depression is something you can't understand if you've never really had it, and will never judge a sign of weakness or cowardice again if you have.  Surviving only makes you more sympathetic for those suffering it.

Hormel, makers of SPAM, have just redeemed themselves for loosing that meat-like plague on the world (though it did make good fodder for Monty Python) by making a motorcycle that runs on bacon grease.

The motorcycle can do over 70-mph and the fuel is almost carbon-neutral, but the best part is it emits bacon-scented exhaust.

Now you and your car can fill up with bacon for breakfast!

One week later, we have another Selfie Tragedy, with a couple falling from a cliff... I assume while standing near the edge trying to get that "Perfect Shot".  Now their kids are orphans.

I'll bet those kids would have liked having their parents around for the rest of their life more than a great photo.

What Does Parental Mobile Use Do To Kids?

There's a cottage industry in articles that pick on early 21st Century technology, mobile devices especially, as "evils" threatening our youth like no challenge ever before in history.

Some fear that all this technology will make kids fail at school, not develop normal human relations or develop unhealthy ones, undermine morality, and lead to the apocalypse!  (Okay, that last one isn't really mentioned very often, but is implied sometimes.)

There's a cottage industry in articles that pick on early 21st Century technology, mobile devices especially, as "evils" threatening our youth like no challenge ever before in history.

I usually ignore such articles as just another manifestation of "These Kids And Their Smartphones/Internet/Rock Music/Slide Rules/Reading-and-Writing Are Ruining Everything!"  Throw in  the word Millennial somewhere, and you've hit all your bases.

The following article, however, does highlight what I feel is a legitimate concern about parenting in the mobile era: parents spending too much time with their devices and not enough with their children.

Physically being there isn't enough.  We've all seen the parent so distracted by their devices that they ignore the child begging for attention, and this is one issue that actually does appear to be becoming worse.  The entire digital world is now at our fingerprints, and that can make ignoring the child too easy.

Kids notice.  If you're with Uncle Facebook more often than Junior, even when in the same room, he's learning that Facebook/smartphones/laptops are more important than they are, than real people in the same room are.

Using a smartphone doesn't make you a bad parent.  Nor does using it in front of your child make you negligent.  Nonetheless, the child needs to know who matters most to their parents, and in an ideal world, that should always be them.

Google+, on the other hand, does seem to "cut you off", unless you go to great lengths to keep finding stupidity.  +1 Recommendations never clog your entire Stream in my experience, in fact in a Stream of hundreds of post seeing more than one or two is unusual.  I do occassionally encounter "stupidity-stuffing", but it tends be showing me too many memes or food pics.

Perhaps this is because Google has a broader snapshot than just the casual, end-of-the-day, keeping-up-with-the-grandkids behaviors common to Facebook users.  I don't know for sure.

What I do know, is that when Facebook doesn't listen to you, they make bad choices like hiding your dad's Status Updates because you didn't interact with him (on Facebook) in the past couple weeks, yet when they do listen to you, they're even worse.

Conservatives to Michelle Obama: Who Cares What You Ate For Lunch?  Well You Do, For One

Okay, this is an extremely silly word game.  Michelle Obama made an offhand quip about Instagram saying, "I mean, no one really cares what you had for lunch."

That said, Mrs. Obama is the answer to her own implied question about who cares what you ate for lunch.

Not to start a political discussion, but ever since she began this "healthy school eating" kick, I've seen more kids develop body image disorders and eating disorders than ever.

Especially among boys, who are not traditionally known to obsess over a bit of weight, but who are now being told by their schools, on the basis of scientifically flawed scales like the the Body Mass Index, that they're suffering from obesity.  I've had to tell a few mothers to just relax, that the&q... more »

I've had to tell a few mothers to just relax, that the "extra weight" their kids were carrying was just them building up for a growth spurt.  Between the school nurse telling them they're fat, and me saying it was build-up to a growth spurt, who do you reckon guessed right?

The problem with Michelle Obama's program is it's based on "fat shaming".  Shaming people for being fat, however, does not make them less fat, it makes them more inclined to engage in the very behaviors that make a person fat.  If, as in the case of kids, weight fluctuates naturally as part of the growth cycle, then you've just pushed one down the path of obesity who wasn't on it to begin with.

The only way to combat the habits that lead otherwise healthy people to obesity is to build them up, not tear them down.  Give them reasons to feel good, not to be depressed, not to fill their life with fleeting indulgences and find real happiness instead.

Or we could just keep on fat shaming them, and acting surprised when youth eating disorders keep going up.___

As +John Blossom says, Gartner frequently misses the point when linear growth becomes a skyrocketing growth curve.

Chome OS is eating the education alive, and while the immediate value may not be as great as the consumer market, don't underestimate the importance of that market.  Microsoft never has.

Does Gartner Have a Clue on the Rise of Chrome OS?

Gartner does a lot of I.T. research and analysis, and while it's safe to say that a lot of I.T. managers turn to their advice when planning out purchases, there's a self-reinforcing regimen that always makes their recommendations suspect. Put simply, Gartner focuses on technologies that result in more revenues for Gartner - not necessarily what's most true or important for their customers to know.

So while Gartner may have it right when they see the sales of devices equipped with Chrome OS rising 79 percent this year over last year's sales (seems a bit low to me, but whatever), as +The Next Web points out rather irreverently, their five-year sales projections are based on vapors. We heard these same sorts of smug projections about this time in the early product lifecycle of Android devices - steady but relatively linear sales growth. Didn't happen - Android sales shot up like a hockey stick, as did their market share.

One of the key factors boosting Chromebook sales has been sales to U.S. institutions, particularly schools. As more and more students get used to computer productivity using just the Web via Chromebooks and Chromeboxes, the rationale for alternatives could evaporate rather quickly. The basically free protection against computer viruses and exploits (read: no installed software to mess things up) creates efficiencies and savings for Chrome OS that are hard to beat.

The retail sales of Chromebooks have surged mostly online, which is understandable - most stores selling personal computers would rather talk down the very inexpensive Chromebooks' high cost/performance ratio and sell you more expensive Windows PCs and Macbooks where the store makes more money. I was in retail years ago, I know the drill well. At the same time, I have to think that the stripped-down Windows PCs that are being introduced at Chromebook prices must carry some sales incentives for retail outlets as well.

Microsoft can't afford to lose money on propping up sales and market share forever, and there's nothing that Microsoft can do to slow down the growth of Chromebooks, which become more and more capable every day. Once Google works out its tighter integration with Android devices and services - likely to start its debut this fall with the coming Android "L" release for phones, TVs/settops, tablets and wearables - the usefulness of Chrome OS is going to be very hard for Microsoft to beat over the next couple of years. Windows isn't going away, but if even my father is almost ready for a Chromebook, it's hard to imagine who won't be.___As +John Blossom says, Gartner frequently misses the point when linear growth becomes a skyrocketing growth curve.

I agree with this ruling. That's all I have to say right now, but feel free to share your thoughts in the comments until I have more.

Another Apple Patent Invalidated

Apple has been facing a lot of challenges at the U.S. Patent Office.  The latest is a preliminary invalidation of an autocomplete patent based on prior art, meaning the idea was "out there" before Apple claimed to "invent" it.

The Patent Wars seem to be winding down, anyways, at least between Apple and the Android partner OEM's, but this is more proof of what a broken, ugly, inconsistent system the USPTO is with regards to software patents.

There shouldn't be any software patents, in my opinion.  If you did something with software, it's only because the underlying language allows you to do so.  Much like language, therefore, anything unique you do with it should be granted a copyright, not a patent.  Making software do something it was always able to do isn't an invention, just an expression.

Apple/Samsung patent trial shambles: '172 claim ''invalid''
Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) patent-infringement actions against Samsung seem to be all-but in tatters. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has ruled, preliminarily, that a key claim in Apple's autocomplete patent is invalid, due to prior art. In other words, no, Apple didn't invent it, after all. The decision isn't final, and Apple could still appeal it, but it's increasingly apparent that Apple has lost the stomach for the fight. This is probably important for some of you. I can see both sides of the argument and I think Facebook actually made the right choice here.

Yes, you can now say “Facebook” in your ads again!
I know, I know... Facebook is not a popular topic over here on G+, but this is very important.

Near the end of this article, +Alex Houg asks the question, Since they are now allowing you to say "Facebook" maybe they will allow you to start promoting G+. (don't hold your breath)

Read the article, it's quick.

As an HOA producer, you can imagine how much I would love to promote my events over there with a one click ad. Right now, we need to send first to a landing page, then to the Event.

Of course once visitors hit our page we can drop a pixel, grab an email, and re-target, and all sorts of clever new possibilities, but everything still requires more than a one click investment from the visitor.

In a previous article Alex writes, _"you can’t promote G+ on Facebook, in the same way that you can’t mention Facebook in your ad.
Ironically, you can promote your Facebook page in Google AdWords."_ https://alexhoug.com/whoops-forgot-cant-promote-google-url-facebook

What are your thoughts about leveraging ads between the two networks?

P.S. If you want to hear more about advertising ideas for G+ traffic, ask +martin shervington who is the leading authority on this subject.
