The Road to Mt Cook || New Zealand

With landscape photography, sometimes the road can be just as interesting as the destination. and this particular route on the way to Mt Cook is a beautiful example of this.

While we were filming Photographing The World, we spent nearly an entire month driving around the South Island of New Zealand looking for different places to teach unique lessons about landscape photography. Here, I had a fun idea to incorporate light trails into the scene to help accentuate the awesome curves in the road. The only issue was that there was no traffic at that time of night!

What was the solution? Have Lee and Patrick drive up and down the road as I capture multiple exposures of light trails. ;)

Urban Density || Hong Kong

Last week I posted a photo of Dubai, and this week it’s a new photo from Hong Kong. What can I say, I guess I must be in an architectural type of mood lately. ;)

This is actually one of the locations that Lee and Patrick from Fstoppers and I used as a lesson while filming Photographing The World. While some of you already know that, something you may not know is that Lee almost got us kicked out of here for flying his DJI Phantom 2! Apparently local building security thought we were using it to spy on people in their tiny apartments. Thankfully I was able to sweet talk my way out of the situation and still come away with the shot!

It’s unbelievable to me that people can live so tightly packed in like this. On the other hand, it’s also really cool to think that a place that most people rarely give a second look, or consider to be so ugly, can look so beautiful and interesting to a photographer. It reminds me of all those years ago when I was wandering the Stockholm Underground and came across what has always been one of my favorite photos in my portfolio, Belly of the Beast. It’s seeing places like this that always remind me that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Dubai, GPP, and a feature in Air Arabia

What a lovely surprise to find a copy of my recent interview with Air Arabia in-flight magazine on the morning I’m flying to Dubai for Gulf Photo Plus. Such perfect timing. :)

I’m very excited to be part of this year’s GPP event and while I’m there, I’ll be teaching three workshops that incorporate everything cityscape, desert / astrophotography, and post-processing. While all three workshops are completely sold out, there are still a few spots left for my 90 minute session on Photo Friday (February 5th), where I’ll be talking about how my photography evolved into what it is today and how I apply certain post-processing techniques to achieve a specific look and feel in my images.

If you’re attending any of the festivities during the week of GPP, please feel free to come by and say hello. It would be lovely to meet youall!

A huge thanks to Nasim at Photography Life for the very honest and thorough review of my Photographing The World: Landscape Photography and Post-processing Tutorial.

I’ve been reading the articles on Photography Life for a very long time and I’ve always appreciated the careful thought and detailed execution of the information they provide. I have to say that I feel very honored to have something that Fstoppers and I created hold up so well against the high quality of standards that the team at Photograph Life is always looking for. :)

Urban Atmosphere || Dubai

Being in Sydney Australia last week, Gothenburg Sweden this week, and heading to Dubai next week, my January schedule has already transformed 2016 into a full speed journey of perpetual travel. I really feel like it’s going to be an awesome year! :D

Since I’ll be gearing up for Gulf Photo Plus soon, I thought I’d share a new photo of the Dubai skyline. This is also one of the locations I’ll be taking my students during my Urban Landscapes and Post-processing workshops, so I thought sharing this would be double appropriate. It’s a pretty stunning view and I’m really excited to be able to bring everyone up here next weekend!

Is anyone here going to be attending the event?

Cosmic Dance || New Zealand

There are certain times as a photographer when events line up in perfect harmony. In this case, I was very fortunate to be in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve near Lake Tekapo New Zealand with a crystal clear sky coinciding with a new moon. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to capture an enormous amount of stars streaking across the pristine sky.

I love shooting star trails because I feel as though it creates a very powerful mood in my imagery. Obviously, having a strong foreground element is a big part of the puzzle when trying to create an immersive scene, and the Church of the Good Shepherd has become an extremely popular location for this type of photography. Being that it’s such an awesome looking old stone structure, it’s easy to see why so many stargazers and photographers love this spot so much.

I just read an article stating that there is now an official ban on all Drone flights over Rome for the entire Jubilee Year of Mercy, which began on December 8th.

Articles further state that Rome’s prefect, Franco Gabrielli, said that law enforcement authorities were prepared to shoot down unauthorized drones and ultralight aircraft if they violate the airspace ban.

While I certainly understand the heightened level of security due to recent events, it makes me sad that I won’t be able to create any more beautiful photos and videos in the Eternal City this year. Rome certainly is a spectacular city to view from the air. Hopefully when the ban is lifted next December and the paranoia begins to fade, they'll have some reasonable laws and restrictions set in place so we can all enjoy the airspace again. :)

18 Countries, 83 Cities, 77 Flights, and 175,953 Miles! What an amazing year!

First, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the continued support with the kind comments, likes, plusses, tweets, and shares. It has been both an honor and a pleasure to share my photos and experiences with all of you and please know that you’ve all helped make 2015 a truly wonderful year.

Wow! 2015 has been a wild, perpetual and non-stop ride of huge projects of epic proportions. Looking back, it’s incredible to see how much our lives have evolved and changed, businesses has developed, and how the experiences of 2015 have caused me to step so far outside of my comfort zone with challenges, that I’ve grown in countless profound and positive ways.

It’s difficult to put into words how much has changed for us this year as we’ve settled into our fourth year of being 100% location independent, spent an entire year producing Photographing the World with Fstoppers, and officially launhed a business that we’ve been developing for the better part of three years called, Dream Photo Tours.

It’s been a wild ride, and along the way, 2015 has continued to confirm for me without a shadow of a doubt that passion, hard work and dedication will never go unrewarded.

This post is a collection of our favorite moments, favorite photos, and favorite memories from 2015. Thanks for being a part of it!

DJI Inspire X5 Review || An Absolute Game Changer

I recently had the pleasure of picking up one of the first final production models of the Inspire Pro and X5 Camera, and immediately took it to one of the most beautiful photography destinations in the world to test it out: Meteora Greece. I spent the better part of a week there capturing both photos and videos and I was able to come away with some seriously stunning results.

This review is meant to showcase what I was able to capture and give you an idea about the capability of the new X5 Camera and the key differences between the Inspire and Phantom series drones. I also go into detail about how exactly I travel with it.

This was a really fun review to put together and I have to say that I’m a huge fan of DJI and the incredible technology that they continue to develop, and in my opinion, their new X5 Micro 4/3C... more »

Meteora Greece || Suspended in Air

I put this aerial video together to display the phenomenal beauty of Meteora Greece during the fall from a perspective that nobody has ever seen before. It was shot entirely using the DJI Inspire Pro Drone and the new X5 Micro 4/3 Camera.

Meteora holds a very special place in my heart since it was one of the first places I visited back in 2010 when I was aggressively trying to build my travel photography portfolio. I knew it would be the perfect location to put the DJI X5 Camera to the test.

This is also going to be part of a detailed review that I'm putting together about the capabilities and features of the Inspire Pro. Expect that post to come soon but in the meantime, please enjoy the spectacular view!

I’m excited and proud to announce my second educational video with Fstoppers, Photographing The World: Cityscape, Astrophotography, and Advanced Post-processing!

With 20 new lessons and over 15 hours of instructional content, this video spans 5 countries and 7 unique cities and has taken us an entire year of production to complete. The complexity of techniques ramps up significantly compared to the the last landscape photography series, as I introduce many new advanced in-the-field and post-processing methods that I’ve never shared publicly before.

Using both ancient and ultra-modern cityscapes, I’m able to introduce advanced exposure blending, time blending, and luminosity masking techniques that teach how to create perfectly seamless images from start to finish. I also created a section where I sit down and discuss my business practices and explain how I've built my photography business into what it is today.

Creating these videos has been a labor of love and has also been one of the most challenging and demanding projects that I’ve ever taken on. The production value is off the charts and I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish here. I'm overjoyed to see it finally be live!

In Harmony With The Sea || Riomaggiore

There’s just something magical about Le Cinque Terre that keeps me visiting again and again. I really don’t think there anywhere in the world quite like it, and with stunning views like this, it’s easy to understand why this region of Italy has captured the hearts of so many travelers like myself. I believe that it’s one of those places that every photographer should see and experience in their lifetime.

Believe it or not, this photo has been sitting in my archives since May of 2014, and over all that time, I just couldn’t seem to find the right inspiration to begin the editing and blending process. This morning though, I woke up with a strong serge of inspiration due to the fact that I’m getting ready to make a exciting announcement on Monday and Riomaggiore plays a small role in it.

Another interesting fact about this photo is that I specifically waited until May to shoot this composition in Riomaggiore. I knew that during that time of year, the sun would set exactly where I wanted it to be in the frame. The epic sunset and incoming swell on the other hand, well, that was just pure luck. :)

Angkor Brilliance || Cambodia

Looking back on all of the time I’ve spent in SE Asia over the past few years, there are few countries that have left such a powerful impact on my heart than Cambodia. From the rich culture, the warm hearted people, and the wealth of breathtaking ancient archeological sites, it’s hard to not fall in love with this beautiful country.

These’s just something incredible about being here, standing in the early morning light among these beautiful and timeless ancient temples. The stories that grace the carvings upon the walls, whispering of a magic from the far and distant past that makes for a truly unique experience.

Cambodia also inspires me with the desire to give something back, to leave it maybe just a little bit better after I leave - a humble offering for all the inspiration it has given me over the years. That’s why I’m soexcited t... more »

Dusty Dawn || Dubai

While I was in Dubai a few weeks ago, I had a very interesting morning shooting in extremely high humidity and low patchy spots of clouds. In fact, it was so hot and muggy outside that my camera was literally dripping water from all the accumulating moisture. Every few minutes, I had to soak it all up with a towel and wipe the fog off the front of my lens. Though I can’t say it was a fun experience, the complicated conditions resulted in a very interesting atmosphere to photograph. If you look closely in the background, you can barely see a small piece of the Burj Khalifa as the rest of the monstrous structure has been totally engulfed by the fog.

Speaking of Dubai, I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be teaching 3 different Photography Workshops at Gulf Photo Plus next February!

The Moments Between || Awesome Upgrades

After a long few days of travel from Fiji, I finally arrived in Meteora Greece where I'll be flying around and capturing the landscape with a DJI Inspire 1 and the new X5 Pro Camera.

This cool new micro 4/3 camera system boasts 13 stops of dynamic range, while shooting 4k video and 16mp RAW stills. To say that I'm excited to put this system to the test would be a huge understatement. :)

Winter Lights || Iceland

Last December when The Fstoppers team and I were filming the Photographing The World Series in Iceland, we had an exceptional night of aurora activity at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. The spectacle lasted for hours as multiple bands of light twisted into beautiful shapes above. There was also a large moon that night so the surrounding landscape was almost completely illuminated. It made for one seriously fun night of winter photography!

+Malcolm Fackender recently kicked off our 2015 Iceland Dream Photo Tour and the Aurora outlook for the coming week looks very promising. Fingers crossed for more epic lights and clear night skies!

With fog rolling into Dubai yesterday morning, apparently being on the 50th floor wasn’t quite high enough! Still, the patchy spots of humidity and low clouds made for a seriously dramatic shooting environment in this fascinating world of outstanding architecture.

Dragons Breath || Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan

There was a brief moment, standing here, taking this photograph, when I felt like everything I had done in my life had in some way led me to this spectacular view. It was a refreshing burst of insight that made it seem like up until this point, I've only been experiencing the world around me through my eyes and not with my heart. This was different, there was just something special about this place that pulled me in, left me transfixed, and refused to let go. As a seasoned traveler, this is a rare experience that I always find to be truly special - and one that I appreciate tremendously.

I can honestly say that after only a few days, the laid back Bhutanese feeling of everything being harmonious and content in the world starts to become comfortably contagious. It’s not long before everything just feels all right.

A huge thanks to everyone who made this visit possible. The experience was incredible from start to finish! :)

Next year, I’ll be putting together a photo tour that will highlight some of the most beautiful places that Bhutan has to offer. Full details will be released as soon as they are available. For now, you can sign up for future information about the tour by visiting: http://dreamphototours.com/fall-bhutan-photo-tour/

Ebb and Flow || Mostar Herzegovina

As a photographer, sometimes experiencing a moment in time can be just as important as capturing one. Behind the lens, it’s easy to only focus on what’s in frame without really appreciating it, without really taking it all in with both our eyes and our hearts. Often, I’m guilty of this - this desire to capture the perfect moment, even if that desire overrides my sense of being in the moment, and my appreciation for the beautiful place that I happen to be standing in.

Finding the perfect balance between the photography that I create and total immersion and appreciation for my environment is something that I’m always striving for. It’s a creative ebb and flow that constantly changes from country to country, place to place, as I continue along this perpetual journey of no-stop travel.

What I’ve learned over the years is that sometimes striking this balance is as easy as putting down the camera, just for a moment, just long enough to appreciate where you are and the effort you put forth to get there for that very specific—and hopefully exceptionally beautiful—moment of time.

In this particular case in Mostar, I arrived to this location extra early, set up my camera, and spent the next few hours just sitting there enjoying the view.

Monuments of Eternity || Petra Jordan

Ever since I was a child, I knew that I wanted to explore the world. I didn’t know how and I didn’t know when, but I was sure that someday my dream of traveling would become a reality.

A huge spark in that desire came from the movies I’d watch in the theater. In the case of films like Indiana Jones, they’d always leave me filled with wonder and inspiration to become a traveling archeologist and explore ancient sites like Petra Jordan. Other times, like with the Back To The Future series, they’d just make me constantly ask my parents for a hover board for christmas. And you know what? After years of waiting, I still don’t have one! But that’s a different story. ;)

The Moments Between || Burano From Above

I have to say that the little Island of Burano—which is most often explored by sea or on foot—is absolutely spectacular to experience from the air. There’s just something special about having the ability to see things from a birds eye view. Before, I used to envy the birds for their view of the world, now with my +DJI Phantom 3, I feel I have a slight advantage. Unless of course someone has managed to attach a 4k video camera and gimbal to a seagull? ;)

The Moments Between || Colorful Burano

With just one day to spend in Venice, I decided to finally visit the island of Burano. It's funny to think that out of more than a dozen trips to Venice over the years that I've never made my way out here before. I really have no idea why that is. It's only an hour away by boat and the uniquely colored houses definitely make it worth the voyage.

Just because I know there will be questions, here you'll see a two camera setup - one for various angles of video and the other for photos. I'll let you guess which camera is used for each. ;)

The Moments Between || The Tigers Nest

For as long as I can remember, the Tigers Nest in Bhutan has been at the top of my bucket list, and for years, I’ve been dying for the chance to see it for myself. Having the chance to photograph it while it was shrouded by swirling mist and fog was just icing on the cake!

Seriously, this is quite possibly one of the most beautiful places I’ve every had the opportunity to visit. I’m absolutely blown away and I can’t wait to share the images and video. :)

The Moments Between || Landing in Paro

I have to admit, it was really difficult to mask my excitement when I was invited into the cockpit to film our landing into Paro Bhutan - one of the most technically challenging airline approaches in the world.

I was smiling ear to ear during the approach as the pilot took full manual control over the A319 since the instruments were not able to find the runway. It was an amazing experience to see the captain effortlessly bank left and right through the dense mountains as we approached the little town. Needless to say, you definitely can't beat the view from up here! :)

The Moments Between || Prepping for Bhutan

What do 2 Think Tank Helipaks, 2 DJI Phantom 3 Pros, 5 Cameras, 12 Lenses, 12tb of Hard Drives, and heaps of spare batteries all have in common? They’re all heading to Bhutan with us tomorrow morning to help shoot a few cool new projects over the next two weeks. Can you guess which Phantom Naomi will be flying? ;)

Needless to say, I’m very excited to have the opportunity to visit Bhutan and though the next two weeks are going to be challenging, they’re also going to be extremely rewarding. This is a country that has long been on my bucket list and over the years, I’ve heard so many awesome stories from people who’ve visited there. It feels great to finally be heading there myself.

Winters Radiance || Iceland

Years ago, Seljalandsfoss was one of the first locations I photographed in Iceland and to this day, it remains one of my all-time favorite waterfalls. That’s why I was really excited to bring the Fstoppers team here when we were filming our landscape photography tutorial last December. I had already told them how unique it was due to the fact that you can walk all the way behind it, but what I failed to mention is just how wet it gets back there. So while I setup in a higher (and much dryer) location, I let them learn that fact the hard way. After all, what are friends for? ;)

I’m also happy to announce that I’ll heading back to Iceland again this winter for another photo tour. If you’d like to photograph this extraordinary winter landscape with us, all the information can be found here: http://bit.ly/iceland-winter

First of all, a huge thanks to everyone for the overwhelmingly positive response to my new video tutorial on Fstoppers.com! I really appreciate all the the kind words, awesome feedback, and support! :D

Out of 10 days we spent filming in Iceland, having the opportunity to visit this exquisite ice cave was one of the highlights of the entire trip. It was such a surreal experience and it really felt like we were stepping into a strange new alien world.

While we were filming from Iceland to New Zealand for “Photographing the World: Landscapes and Post-processing,” the cameras never stopped rolling and Lee and Patrick cut together a wildly entertaining series of 8 behind the scenes episodes.

This time, we visit a glacier ice cave that was so amazing, that we decided to dedicate an entire episode to it. We also discover whether or not Siggy is actually an axe murderer, and did I hear Lee say something about Half Life 3? ;)

Naomi and I just celebrated our 40th month of being 100% location independent!

What most people don’t know is that it was an incredible struggle for us to get to where we are today. Success has not come easily and before we made the decision to become location independent, we spent a few difficult years trying to cope with an impossible amount of debt and lost nearly everything to the housing crisis. This video and post explains that journey and how those hardships ushered in a transformation that would become the greatest collection of experiences and memories of our entire lives.

I also share my advice on how you can start your own path towards become location independent.

Have Lee and Patrick drive up and down the road as I capture multiple exposures of light trails. ;)

Winters Grasp || Iceland

We live in a beautiful world that’s just waiting to be explored, and for me, Iceland most definitely tops the charts with some of the most extraordinary landscapes on the planet. I know its been a long while since I’ve shared a new image from Iceland but believe me, I’ve been shooting and processing many since my last visit with Fstoppers in December.

Out of 10 days of icy winter exploration, this was one of my favorite locations we filmed while I taught a lesson on manual exposure blending and how to use a solid neutral density filter to create soft tendrils of streaky water. Since it was winter time, we had to use crampons to safely hike in and approach the edge of the cliff but that just added to the uniqueness of the experience. It also meant that there were beautiful patches of snow and ice that mixed perfectly with the composition.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! Today is an extremely exciting day! :D

After 6 months of production both in the field and in the studio, I’m thrilled to finally announce the release of my first video with Fstoppers, Photographing The World: Landcape Photography and Post-processing!

What has been a labor of love has also been one of the most challenging and demanding projects that I’ve ever taken on. The production value is off the charts and I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish here. I'm overjoyed to see it finally be live.

I also want to thank everyone who has been following along with our incredible journey around the world to film this project. Your continued support means more to me than words can express!
