Ғ ΜіснæL Sŧuŧz4,508I rarely do this...In fact, I haven't done a circle share in over a year, and I've never shared this one. But... It's #AmbienTime , and the thing about the folks in this circle: they've all paid their dues with respect to my #AmbienTime  moments. These are the people who, with one or two exceptions, have known me the longest here on G+. They also happen to be the list of people who are either overly medicated, or underly medicated, because they still haven't uncircled me yet, even after all this time. I keep checking, but so far none of these people has gotten tired of my crap enough to go through the effort yet. I don't have the heart to tell them that this suffering won't erase all their past misdeeds and sins, and won't get them into heaven.I spend 99% of my G+ time in this one circle. And one of the people here was insane enough to actually marry me.It's a very diverse group, about as diverse as you can get. Each, though, is wonderfully broken, like magnificent shattered stained-glass murals, each reflects the same sun that alights upon us all, but in uniquely amazing ways that, with the passage of the hours and the seasons, brings a new dazzling display every time I see them online. If these are the only people you ever circle on G+, you will be hooked on G+ for life. And it's proof-positive that quality kicks the crap out of quantity every day of the week. This is my little way of saying, "Thank you" to all of you guys for putting up with me for the last few years. And I take serious pride in knowing that I have the rockin'est circle on G+.+Sque Morgan , up there at the 1:00 spot was my very first friend here. We don't talk much these days, I miss that, but we've both been going through some crap these last few months. I think she's responsible for my meeting about half this circle, people like +Eric Johnson, for example. And I know that after Sque (like a few days) came +Karen Schumacher  and +Debra Dayton , and then +Alvin Stearns and then +Shawn Holster, who I was sure was going to defrock me last month when he announced his annual spring circle cleaning...+Darryl Mouzone I met through an experiment. I decided to add every "suggestion" that G+ made for one week, and he was the only one that made in to this circle, which made the whole exercise a totally worth-while thing to do.2014-09-23 03:17:43431706

Tessa Schlesinger20,569This is the circle of people I follow. I am not in it (so I'm not promoting myself). I follow them because they are interesting, sincere, have good stuff. Some of them have been here with me from day one.  They don't always interact every day, but I think it really depends on what you're looking for on G+. If you want people to interact with you, well, nobody can interact with everybody who adds them. There just isn't enough time to do that. On the other hand, if you'd like to read someone because they present informative, interesting, entertaining stuff, then this circle is interesting. I think it would appeal to atheists, agnostics, people who love beauty, travel, occasional humor, who are visual, intellectual, thinkers, humanist, and/or liberal. :)2014-05-08 15:31:52186503

Echo? I love the play Amazon is making here. Truly some out-of-the phone-thinking.

What Echo does is define a new type of interaction that may be more appealing than asking questions to your phone, a practice many people tell me they do not like and would not adopt.

It also more fully defines the always-on metaphor.  While phones like the Moto X and a plugged in iPhone do that, its doesn't quite feel right.

I think Amazon will have a hit with this if they can deliver before Christmas, because its a great GIFT.  Even if you wouldn't, yet, get it for yourself, it is intriguing and priced really well for what it does.

One thing that will likely hurt Amazon unless that can solve it quick is an inability to answer ALL the questions a user might have. I think this is what really doomed Siri - it can really only answer a few things well.  In order toca... more »

Castles, Connectors, Crowds, and Cheerleaders: Shifting power models.

As new power models become integrated into the daily lives of people and the operating systems of communities and societies, a new set of values and beliefs is being forged. Power is not just flowing differently; people are feeling and thinking differently about it.

These feedback loops—or maybe we should call them “feed-in” loops, given that they’re based on participation—make visible the payoffs of peer-based collective action and endow people with a sense of power. In doing so, they strengthen norms around collaboration and make the case that we can do just fine without the old power middlemen that dominated the 20th century.

Agents to the top programmers: 10x claims to represent digital “rock stars”

Cool concept. Because the chance of getting a job with a digital resume today is extremely remote.

The job-matching process is broken:  1) Finding talent you can trust generally falls back to personal recommendations. 2) Finding A players amid the piles of applications is impossible, 3) using HR and skill keywords as a filter throws out as much good as it discovers.

"If a grand jury is hearing evidence tantamount to what they would hear in a jury trial, then what is the point of a grand jury?"

Great question.  Any legal experts care to opine?  +Anne-Marie Clark

Wether or not this is a legally viable usage of a grand jury, this seems to me like an extremely bad tactic. Without giving the community anything but leaked evidence, all you do is confirm their suspicions that the system is rigged. I don't think this is going to end well regardless of guilt or facts.

Not just for children: Ideas to improve your critical thinking.

I never thought of it in this way, but this is EXACTLY how I most enjoy interacting with children.  Challenging them to think and imagine.

Awesome, +Sophie Wrobel. Via the inimitable +Max Huijgen.

How to get a child to think critically

This article contains illustrative examples which resonate to my personal educational experience throughout school - I remember how much I would detest all the test questions that I got wrong because I answered 'What word means .....' with a synonym of the vocabulary list word instead of that word itself, or because I had written out a fraction instead whereas the answer key rounded to two decimals, or because my experimental measured lab value was not close enough to the expected experimental value, and so on.

But the bigger and more immediate question remains unanswered by the article, if the current system doesn't teach children how to think critically, how do we teach those children critical thinking?

For starters, I'd humbly propose a few suggestions:

1) Do misuse everything you can.
Learning goal: Do not take anything for granted.
Why can't a bed be an ironing board? Why can't a cardboard box turn into a toy bridge? Or a diaper be an emergency sunshade? All is well, until the kids reach kindergarten and start getting told off by the teachers on what is and isn't acceptable, and now they tell me what I should be doing and are continually astounded that whatever alternative I'm doing actually works. Yes, Mama is crazy... and not a bit ashamed of it.

2) Do try out stupid things.
Learning goal: Test things out yourself.
Why not eat a lemon together? Go out in the rain without a raincoat? Stick a balloon on a needle? Microwave a CD? Try to fix a broken radio with Google's help instead of taking it to the repair shop? The result is sudden, golden insights bringing very diverse topics together: 'Mama, going out in the rain is just like taking a shower, so I don't have to wash my hair tonight!' (No, Mama did not teach that!)

3) Do make silly excuses.
Learning goal: Create inventive and fluent arguments.
Yes, my son does rolls his eyes when I offer completely outrageous reasons. And laughs when I challenge him to test the reasons himself (he knows better than to believe everything I say). But he also started answer commands such as 'Time to go to bed' as tactfully as any politician asked to give a spontaneous statement on a controversial topic.

Paraphrasing +Jeffrey Rohrs above.

If you are only counting conversions, you are doing it wrong.

By focusing on the present moment and making it unmistakably memorable, marketers can stand out amongst the noise and take the customer one step closer to the next major milestone.

One thing that will likely hurt Amazon unless that can solve it quick is an inability to answer ALL the questions a user might have. I think this is what really doomed Siri - it can really only answer a few things well.  In order to capture the market, in order to really get people into the mode of voice ordering, Echo needs to be a go-to device, not a go-to-for-a-couple-of-things device.

Unfortunately, that's pretty hard to do if all they do is wire in feeds and build out knowledge graphs. +Stone Temple Consulting has some proof of that if you look closely.  Even as Google Now wins, it only answers ~50% of random questions well (coverage * precision): https://www.stonetemple.com/great-knowledge-box-showdown/

For any random question, there is an algorithmic barrier, at 50% to 60% ‘intelligence,’ beyond which current cognitive intelligence and semantic technologies cannot travel.

Lower your carbon footprint, sure. And get awesome data about your energy use, almost magically.

It can tell my brand of fridge, what each appliance costs me, when I go to sleep at night. Can even tell me remotely on my mobile if devices are on when I'm away!

Exclusive sneak peek:

This is the most interesting new thing/company I've seen this year. Wattcost tracks when different electrical appliances are turned on or off (it can tell what brand of refrigerator you have, for instance, just by the electrical signal it shows on your power line/meter). Reduce your carbon footprint.

Will be coming to United States in mid 2015 for $149.

https://www.wattcost.com/

Why is this important? Google bought Nest for $3.x billion. This would generate even more data about what you do in your house than that. It knows, for instance, when you turn on and off lights, or open your refrigerator door, all by watching your power line.___Lower your carbon footprint, sure. Net Neutrality explained by people that would actually know; A top Google engineer and a top tech cartoonist.

Net Neutrality is a key to having an open Internet. Without it, telecom companies have the power to decide who is and isn't allowed to have a business online. (Hint: if you compete with them, the answer is "no." Hint #2: if your business is successful, expect them to ask you for a "tax" for the answer to be yes. Hint #3: expect that tax to be a significant percentage of your income.) They also get the power to do far more sinister things -- like read and modify the web pages you see in order to insert anything from tracking to ads, or even hijack your traffic outright.

Net Neutrality isn't "Obamacare for the Internet," as Senator Cruz seems to think. It's making sure that a handful of the most unpleasant bastards in the country don't have veto power over your ability to start a business or take your business to whomever you please.

Fortunately, +Matthew Inman has a great explanation of what Net Neutrality actually means.

It's really about crab tacos.

(Incidentally, I was very glad to hear Obama's statement about it earlier today. "Reclassification" is a technical term, but it basically means that cable companies have to treat everyone's traffic the same, and aren't allowed to boost their friends and harm their enemies. It's the regulatory banhammer that the cable companies were being threatened with if they didn't actually regulate their own behavior the way they said they would -- which, in the Netflix incident, they decidedly didn't.)___Net Neutrality explained by people that would actually know; A top Google engineer and a top tech cartoonist.

If you are not using Social Login with your business, you are missing opportunity.

Social Login Trends Q3 2014

Despite reports of privacy concerns and young people abandoning the network, Facebook’s value to consumers as a social login provider shows no signs of declining. Facebook increased its lead over Google during the past quarter, marking its second consecutive quarter of growth. Yahoo slipped to its lowest share ever, with Twitter picking up momentum in third place.

Google+ made a valiant charge to dethrone Facebook but the momentum is now gone and Facebook is once again pulling away. Yahoo on the other hand is now in nowheresville with Twitter now the third largest platform.

Hardest problems we have today: 1) Proving who we are. 2) Merging our online and offline reputations effectively.

Your Next Passport Could Be On The Blockchain

A blockchain tinkerer named Chris Ellis has created a system to build an actual digital passport that, through use of the Bitcoin blockchain and some encryption, will allow you to identify yourself online and off. Called World Citizenship, the project just launched on Github and shows some definite promise.

New Wave Social Networks: how to think about them, why reputation and compensation are at the crux.

Excellent framework from +Gideon Rosenblatt.

Personally, I'm a fan of Synereo.

You Are Not the Product
This post was a long time coming. It's a deep look at experiments like Ello, Tsu, Synereo and reddit's plan to give equity back to its community. These are all attempts to rethink the way social media and social networks work, by recognizing that:

A) People are not products.
B) There is value in what we contribute

This one's a long one because it's attempting to tease out something important. There's a big shift on the horizon, and there's no guarantee that we'll actually get there. But if we do, it could shift some of our current economic assumptions and just might create a new stream of potential income at a time when many people could really use it.

Harvard cracks DNA storage, crams 700 terabytes of data into a single gram

A bioengineer and geneticist at Harvard’s Wyss Institute have successfully stored 5.5 petabits of data — around 700 terabytes — in a single gram of DNA, smashing the previous DNA data density record by a thousand times.

Just think about it for a moment: One gram of DNA can store 700 terabytes of data. That’s 14,000 50-gigabyte Blu-ray discs… in a droplet of DNA that would fit on the tip of your pinky. To store the same kind of data on hard drives — the densest storage medium in use today — you’d need 233 3TB drives, weighing a total of 151 kilos. In Church and Kosuri’s case, they have successfully stored around 700 kilobytes of data in DNA — Church’s latest book, in fact — and proceeded to make 70 billion copies (which they claim, jokingly, makes it the best-selling book of all time!) totaling 44 petabytes of data stored.___One gram of DNA can store 700 terabytes of data.

It's not always about the money...

Do you know what actually motivates your users and customers and employees? Not sure that new social network Tsu does...

How Tsu Risks Demotivating Its Own Users
Original Source  :  http://goo.gl/3TkjEL

Tsu, the new social network that promises to share ad revenue with its users (unlike other social networks), has been trending on social media sites these past few days as users sign up and beg others to join them.  Those who join because of you also pass some of their revenue from downstream, in a pyramid-like structure.

Some have focused on this pyramid-like structure or the inscrutable, invisible algorithms that determine who gets paid out, focusing on the wisdom (or legality) of these as business decisions.

However, something else about their business model has been bugging me, an echo of something I could almost recall from my days as an Experimental Psych Major.  Finally, this morning, I figured out what it was, a principle I learned regarding motivation and reward and how reward can negatively impact motivation:

The Overjustification Effect
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overjustification_effect)

From Wikipedia:

The overjustification effect occurs when an expected external incentive such as money or prizes decreases a person's intrinsic motivation to perform a task. According to self-perception theory, people pay more attention to the external reward for an activity than to the inherent enjoyment and satisfaction received from the activity itself. The overall effect of offering a reward for a previously unrewarded activity is a shift to extrinsic motivation and the undermining of pre-existing intrinsic motivation."

Businesses are especially interested, or should be, in understanding this principle because, very often, attempting to incentivize your workers to work harder can actually demotivate them.

Speaking from personal experience, I worked many years ago for Whole Foods, and I busted my hump to work hard at my job.  Unfortunately, once a month on a Saturday early in the morning, all employees were required to attend a team meeting at which, based on voting by employees within each division, bonuses would be distributed to the 'hardest workers'.

Many months of watching a clique within my own department of close friends all vote repeatedly for each other, until it became obvious they would never vote for anyone outside their group, left me increasing demotivated, and I confess I started working less hard.  Had these bonuses simply not existed, I believe that would not have happened.

This is exactly what Tsu is doing.

With their monetization model, Tsu is tangibly rewarding a previously unrewarded activity, i.e. using a social network.  This is, for some, a dream come true to those people who feel themselves to be "content creators", "marketers", etc... and who WANT to be rewarded for everything they do online.

For the average person, however, a social network is about BEING SOCIAL (which should, admittedly, be a truism).  They don't care that the network itself makes money from their using it, though they may be concerned by exactly HOW it makes its money (violating privacy, targeting ads, etc...; this is where Ello is enjoying some recent success).

The worst part of the overjustification effect is that, by shifting the motivations for the task from intrinsic to extrinsic, not only does it alter the behavior of users from a genuine desire to be social to a desire to make money from being social, but at the same time any reduction or removal of the reward causes immediate demotivation.

If, for example, Tsu users don't make enough money to be satisfied (or don't make any), or their revenue share goes down over time, or Tsu makes changes that make earning revenue harder, this will have an immediate demotivating effect.

Even in the absence of this, their behaviors will be less genuinely social and more driven by naked profit motive, which for a social network is analogically equivalent to someone only hanging out with their friends because they're paid to.  Would you hang out with someone knowing they would only hang out with you, or even would just spend less time with you, if someone wasn't paying them to do it?

This doesn't just affect Tsu, and may perhaps be the death knell of any social network trying to incentivize users with monetary rewards for use and/or recruitment.  At the very least, such a monetization model should almost certainly not be a made a central part of the proclaimed appeal of the network.  It will not only attract the shadiest of characters and most narcissistic self-promoters, but will even alter the behaviors of and ultimately demotivate even those users who will gladly return to Facebook or Twitter or wherever they're just enjoying themselves being social.

However noble the intention to "share the wealth" might be, monetizing social media in almost any imaginable way runs afoul of human nature, and seems nearly certain to destroy any network before it can ever become loved.

Approached for comment last week, Whisper said it “does not follow or track users”. The company added that the suggestion it was monitoring people without their consent, in an apparent breach of its own terms of service, was “not true” and “false”.
