Marco Favero720Great Photographers With < 10,000 FollowersThe photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Most have < 10,000 followers (when they were put into the circle).  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  I have included myself in the circle and also the landscape page.  Some are fairly new to G+ so please make them feel welcome!!Landscape Photography:  I invite everyone to check out the +Landscape Photography #LandsacapePhotography theme.  If you want to impress me, that’s the place to do it!!  Post a great landscape that will get my attention.  See the About tab for all the details.I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people but please only one.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you!#sharedcircles #addcircle #sharedpubliccircles #circleshare #publicsharedcircles #circlesharing #publiccircle #findcircles #circlemeup #influencers #influencer #influence #influencermarketing #sharedcircle #circles #circlethis #circleyoushare #circle #socialmediamar2014-02-11 00:07:58479312CC G+

Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117CC G+

Gailen Mapes16,845Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera G-K - 8 of 14Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 500 members.I am now sharing one circle per day, for the reason see: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/posts/RrPNTzHhQuHAs before these circles are photographers that I admire. They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to October 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting October 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-10-22 10:25:32259014CC G+

Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307CC G+

If you see that I have plussed your comment, then you know that I have added you to the next revision of the PLC. I didn't PLUS your comment? Make sure that you have reshared this circle post and let me know that you did so.HOW TO AVOID FLOODING OF THIS POST IN YOUR FEED:This post is hash-tagged with #CircleSharingForThePeoplePLC2 so that you may mute the reshares this post will generate. That way you will avoid seeing multiple copies of this post in your feed and your adrenaline level will stay normal. I will add a new hash-tag for every announcement and circle post. As an experiment, I'm starting this g+ Nikon Gear Circle, which I hope will grow to include people who want to talk about gear and (in particular) can answer questions about Nikon cameras, lenses and accessories. If you want to be added to the circle so that others with questions can find you or you just want to be included in the discussions, add a comment to the original post here: https://plus.google.com/u/1/106831762557971378854/posts/iXanpxwNwtb, We'll probably soon reach the limit for sharable circles, so I'll have to create more than one.Doug Kaye shared a circle with you.2011-09-29 14:19:4681117CC G+

Medinah Country Club in HDR during the Ryder Cup.
Creating an HDR without a tripod

I haven't created too many HDR images in the recent months as I've been focused on shooting a lot of different subjects and styles. However, here's an image created from a series of 5 RAW images taken (hand held) during the Ryder Cup. One of the many good things about the Nikon D4 is its speed.

To get this shot, I setup my bracketing for 0, -1, -2, +1, +2 and then set my shooting mode to Continuous High. I simply hold the shutter down and the camera automatically snaps the 5 images and then automatically stops shooting. With a capture speed of 11 fps and a relatively stead hand you can get some pretty decent consistency for HDR. A tripod would be better, but when you don't have one you can improvise using this technique.

Sunrise at Oxford Bend
Jackson, Wyoming

_More images at www.facebook.com/johnkaminskiphotography_

We got up at 5:30 to join about 10 other photographers all lined up catch the morning sunrise in Jackson, Wyoming. I was doing other shoots on this trip and had some lighting gear, but did not manage to bring a tripod which made this shot a little difficult. I also looked like a fool with everyone else having their $1500 tripods all lined up and I was firing bracketed shots using as solid a handheld technique as possible!

On a side note, I got my first real look into how cranky some photographers can get when people walk in front of their picture. A few people were walking down by the water and all of the sudden a collective sigh and grumbling came from a few of those trying to capture a shot.

Image is a composite of 5 bracketed shots... more »

Anyone in Sydney (December 20-24) or Queenstown (December 26-December 30) interested in organizing a #Photowalk?

I'm hoping to explore these areas (never been to either) with some photographers. Looking for a little local perspective and to meet some new photogs on the other side of the world.

Anyone interested?

Promoting Bad Science at TED: Cows Cannot Stop Climate Change

A man named Allen Savory went viral recently after giving a talk about "desertification" at TED, and claiming that the solution to the world's problems could be solved if we were willing to eradicate the world's deserts by increasing massive cattle herds and driving them over every face of desert. It was irresponsible of TED to give this man a platform.

From the blog post by Chris Clarke:

Savory's talk is full of red flags, and to document and rebut each one would take more time than is really wise to spend on the talk. But three stand out as especially egregious.

The notion that bare, unvegetated soil in the American desert is an evil to be avoided flies in the face of everything we know about desert soil science. Bare soil in the desert includes desert pavement, a self-regulating system that controls air pollution. It includes alkaline crusts and dry lake beds, both homes to unique assemblages of organisms. Seemingly bare soil may hold seed banks of diverse assemblages of annual plants, some of which are limited enough in extent that covering the soil with grassland -- even if you could do so -- would push them toward extinction. And sparsely vegetated soil is crucial for the survival of many animal species, including desert tortoises, fringe-toed and horned lizards, and other animals that actually belong in the desert far more than do cattle.

The idea that grasses must be eaten by livestock to perform a valuable ecological function is similarly absurd. Grasses provide food, shelter, and even construction material for hundreds of desert animals ranging from jackrabbits to tiny insects, each of which is eaten in turn by other animals. Send in a wave of cattle to crop those grasses and we've diverted that ecological productivity to our own ends, depriving the local wildlife of food and habitat. Bunchgrasses can live for centuries if untrampled, providing year after year of ecological benefit to hundreds of generations of wildlife. Savory, like many grazing advocates, seems to regard such ancient bunchgrasses as decadent: In Lynn Jacobs' 1991 book "Waste of The West," Jacobs says "Savory claims like most ranchers that old growth range plants are 'useless' and 'decadent.'" But, adds Jacobs, "like tree snags in forests, standing dead range plant material is itself an important, natural environmental component."

Lastly, Savory's contention that the "algal crust" he shows developing on arid land soil is "the cancer of desertification" is unscientific in the extreme. He makes the statement at 4:00 into the TED video, but it's one he's made for years. Lynn Jacobs wrote in 1991 that students of (what was then being called) HRM learned from Savory that "Cryptogams are a prime indicator of a deteriorating environment." (To underscore his postulation, commonly Savory scuffs apart the cryptogamic layer while walking on Rangeland.)

This is, of course, completely false. Cryptobiotic soil crusts are a crucial underpinning of old-growth desert habitats across North America, and indeed throughout much of the world.

Savory has been around for a very long time preaching the same fallacious grazing gospel, and his name raises curled lips among land management scientists the way Velikovsky's name raises the ire of astronomers. He's merely the latest practitioner of a tradition a couple centuries long of land management mythologies based on wishful thinking that don't turn out to work. A century ago land speculation boosters in the American West claimed that "rain follows the plow"; Savory has merely updated that to "grass follows the cow."

But with this TED talk Savory's gone viral. His video has had more than a half a million views already, and is being lauded in terms so over the top that it's really rather embarrassing for the people doing the lauding.

It's not surprising. Most people don't know anything about the desert, and the notion of "greening" it has deep emotional resonance. To have an admittedly charismatic, soft-spoken man get up and tell us all that we can fix climate change by "greening" that desert, and that we can all have more hamburgers to boot? That's understandably tempting, even when Savory says -- at just shy of 12 minutes into his video -- that there is no other option to save the planet than instituting his grazing reforms.

The people who organize TED, though, ought to hold themselves to a higher standard. They actually have access to people who know things, the biologists and soil scientists and desert ecologists who can dismantle Savory's arguments in about 15 words. Savory spreads pseudoscientific hatred for a vulnerable ecosystem, and tells kind-hearted people that the fate of their children depends on destroying that ecosystem. Those people can be forgiven for taking him at his word. But TED has a greater responsibility to its viewers. TED should have known better.

You in for the 2nd edition?

ANNOUNCING PLUS ONE COLLECTION 2012 + Image Submission + Fundraising Campaign

Alright, let's do this thing! The publication of Plus One Collection 2012 is officially under way. Read on for details, watch the video, re-share it, and get on the train before it's too late.

Who can contribute a photograph for the book?

Anyone. Send us your best image you took in 2012 and it'll get published in one or in all forms - in print, in ebook, and in our online gallery.

What's the theme?

Same as last year - your best photograph you made in the year just ended, 2012.

How else can I help?

Re-share this post with your circles. Invite friends and family to participate. This is a photography community publication, and we want as many submissions as we can get. Everyone should hear about this. Remember to tag your posts with #PlusOneCollection2012

When is the deadline?

Image submission is open from now until January 16, 11:59pm California time. In other words, don't wait and send us your work today.

How do I submit my photograph?

All details and submission form is here - http://plusonecollection.com/submit/

Will we be able to see what's being submitted?

Yes. Once submissions start coming in, I will setup a +SmugMug gallery where you can see all that's being sent to us and you'll be able to find your image too.

How will the book get published?

The book will be printed and bound professionally through Oddi in Iceland. They're known for working with photographers and for their great quality of printing.

How can we afford a print run?

To afford the cost of publication, we launched a crowdsourcing campaign through Indiegogo ("Kickstarter" that allows charitable causes). There are all levels of contribution there, so take a look - http://igg.me/p/305566/x/2020311

How do I pre-order a copy?

Just like last year, for limited time only, you can order Limited Edition of the book that will ship numbered, signed, and with a fine art print. The only way to order it this year is through Indiegogo campaign that will run through January. These copies will ship first and before book officially goes on sale. So again, don't wait and chip in today!

When will the book ship?

We're shooting for the same time frame as last year - so sometime in early spring.

What cause are we supporting this year?

We are very proud to have teamed up with the Kilgoris Project. In short, we will use any proceeds from the sale of the book and buy digital cameras for underpriveledged children in the school in Kenya. But it's a much bigger project than that. Please watch the video!

Who made this video?

We proud to be still working on +Andy Lee who made this video is our chief designer for everything pixel related.

Ivan, why are you not smiling in the video?

I'm Russian. We never do. But I'm always smiling inside.

Kmm. I still want to help.

Click that "share" button right now!

Questions?

Leave them in the comments.

HDR experiments with a couple

I was asked to shoot a friend's engagement images and as someone who doesn't normally shoot this type of stuff I had to experiment a bit. I was using my new D4 which fires incredibly fast. So I asked the couple to pretend they were kissing and stand still. I shot 5 rapid shots and processed in NIK's HDR software.

I was just doing this to screw around and wasn't sure what the results would be, but this is the first image that they requested. Sometimes you never know what your going to get.

What are your thoughts?

NIK software and watermarks take 2

Another example of me trying to include watermarks into my posts without being too in your face with them.

I am also loving my new NIK software. There are so many options on things that it will take some time to find my niche as it relates to processing images. The SilverEfexPro, however, is probably one of my favorites. I don't shoot that much B&W, but I do love experimenting.

As always, any comments on watermarking or processing are welcome.

A little bokeh and those pesky watermarks
Model: Jill B

Here's an image from a recent shoot along the waterways of Providence. The purpose of the shoot was to get some images of a silk scarf for an upcoming book (can't post those yet) but here's another one that I captured as the sun was going down and the lights coming on.

...and back to the watermarks
Highly controversial among photographers with me usually riding the fence about whether to use or not to use them. I have decided to integrate a few different types into select future images as a way to be more visible. I'm not really trying to protect from the use of my images, but when I see them showing up in other places, I do like to see that I am at least recognized as the photographer. I guess it is considered more branding than anything else.

I had a logo created (simple), but for now I am taking inspiration from a few other photographers that keep it simple with their name. In some other shots, I have "hidden" the watermark creatively into specific aspects of the image. In this case, it's more obvious.

What are your thoughts on using watermarks?

Trump National Golf Links - Scotland

I had the opportunity to tour Donald Trump's latest golf course in Scotland and I have to say that although I've seen several of his courses this takes the cake. I wouldn't have expected anything less, but this has to be one the most spectacular courses ever built. I think that it was recently ranked 8th in one of the magazines and this was before it was even open for play. My guess is that it will be considered one of the greatest courses in the UK (and probably the world).

Here's an image from today's visit!

Image captured on top of a tee at a high point on the course. HDR composite of 5 RAW bracketed images handheld using a Nikon D700 and a 24-70 f/2.8. Processed in Photmatix Pro and Photoshop.

I have a "Bohemian" themed board on pinterest (link below) that I really like and am trying to capture to some degree. I was fortunate to have a great friend in Connecticut who was able to gather a group of friends together for a photoshoot. Although the weather didn't cooperate to capture the style of Bohemian shots I wanted, I really like how the photos turned out anyway.

Thanks to Alison, Amanda, and Jessica for battling rain and cold weather to get these shots.

Recent Shoot in Manilla

Here are a few shots from a recent trip to Manila. A wife of a friend of a friend is a designer and brought in a few models to show off some of her latest designs. I was fortunate enough to be there and shoot for them for the day.

All in all, we had 4 models running back and forth with MUA and changing outfits. We ended up with about 10 different outfits shot and I was definitely exhausted when we finished.

This series of images is setup like this because I wanted to see what it looked like when it was posted on #pinterest . I wouldn't normally post a long image like this, but it seems to get attention when pinned.

If anyone uses pinterest and has an opinion on this format for photos, please share in the comments.

Quick trip to Singapore

I recently had a trip to Asia in which I visited 6 countries in a very short period of time with many stopovers of less than 24 hours. After a 22 hour flight through Tokyo, I ended up arriving at Singapore at 12:30AM and walking around the city trying to capture as many images as possible.

During the walk, it started to rain which reminded me of some of the shots that +Trey Ratcliff took in Paris and Disney.

This shot was a composite of 5 bracketed RAW images processed in Photomatix and Photoshop. Shot with a Nikon D700 using the 14-24mm f/2.8.___resharing publicly

Asia Tour 2012

I had the opportunity to take a whirlwind tour around Asia over the last 9 days. The tour took me to the following cities/countries; many of which included stops of less than 24 hours.

Day 1: Singapore to Bangkok,Thailand

Day 3: Bangkok to Ho Chi Min, Vietnam
Day 4: Ho Chi Min to Manila, Philippines

If you look at only one photo, check out the one of the motorcycle family from Vietnam!

ATTENTION - Photography Logo/Watermark Needed!

I am looking for a logo/watermark for my images that I am posting to my website and for images posted to model mayhem. In general I don't like watermarks, but my photos are ending up in weird places and I'm not being given credit for them. For certain images (like this one), I would like to include a logo that represents my photography.

Would anyone be willing to produce a logo for some type of trade? I can wash cars, do dishes, do a free photoshoot, etc.

You can check out my images (HDR, fashion, etc) at www.johnkaminski.me

Woot woot. The new G+ layout was rolled out to me. It will take some getting used to, but I think I'm going to like it. This will hopefully get me more active in here once again!

Florida turfgrass, cut stem production and TPC Sawgrass

I recently took a trip to the University of Florida where I spoke with the faculty and staff in the Department of Plant Pathology about what else...Social Media use in academia.

As is typical for me on these trips, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit some of the area and shoot some photography. The three main themes shot here were the UFL Turfgrass Program, a cut stem production nursery and TPC Sawgrass (home of THE PLAYERS Championship)

UFL Turfgrass
The University of Florida turfgrass program is damn good. I was impressed with all of their facilities and the numerous faculty that they have to cover a range of topics from pathology to entomology and nematology to general management.

Select Growers Cut Stem Nursery
I had never even thought of what goes into the cut stem industry. These are all the plants and cuttings that are used to complete those floral arrangements you give your wife on Valentine's Day, your mother on Mother's Day, and any other occasion you can think of. It's a fairly manual process to harvest the various cuttings and it was great to see the process at the Select Growers Nursery in Florida.

TPC Sawgrass and THE PLAYERS Championship
I have played TPC Sawgrass on numerous occasions, but this was the first time that I took the time to bring my camera and tripod and create some HDR images. The course was in great shape and although I put my ball in the drink on the famous 17th green, I still managed to shoot an 87 from the blue tees...which is about all I can ask for. That and the 2 birdies I had.
