UK Photography Community348,668*YOUR IMAGE MUST BE ON @104455368165538982690  TO BE POSTED IN THIS EVENT & YOU NEED TO PROVE IT WITH A LINK - please!* This is an event with a slight difference. We are basing it on photographs uploaded onto the UKPC Group on Panoramio.     We have provided some information on how to use Panoramio so this details section is slightly longer than normal. *Please read all of this section.* Some of you might be currently active Panoramio users and members of the UKPC group, you might like to make use of Panoramio.  *THE THEME* The event theme and the philosophy behind the UKPC Panoramio group can be best described by this simplistic scenario: *"A fellow UK Photography community member contacts you saying they are coming to your area for a few days, could you recommend some good photo locations."* *Where would you recommend?* There are no restrictions on number of photos per person for Panoramio or the event Must be from UK and Crown Dependencies Can be Landscape, Seascape or Urban. Can also be people/animals [but associated with a geographical location and repeatable e.g. people watching in a regular street market, not just transient events.] Not necessarily looking for your very best technical photos, just those that justify the uniqueness and photographic interest of your favourite local spots. *HOW TO UPLOAD TO PANORAMIO AND JOIN THE UKPC GROUP* Visit the UKPC Panoramio group - found through this link: http://www.panoramio.com/group/299902 You can log on to Panoramio with your G+ log in - in fact you will be already logged in when you link. First set up your Panoramio page and upload some photos Apply for UKPC Panoramio group membership Then select your photos for the group. To assist you there are some screenshots in two albums, how to upload to Panoramio and how to join the UKPC group and add photos at the links below: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/101116887585805976409/photos/101116887585805976409/albums/5983169018549828161 https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/101116887585805976409/photos/101116887585805976409/albums/5983170882288861921 Panoramio itself has a very good help section, which details how to do the above and much more: http://www.panoramio.com/help If you have any questions please add them in to the event page and the moderators and other members will help. *SOME KEY INFO ABOUT PANORAMIO* The essence of Panoramio is it displays photos in their exact geographic location. By adding your photos to Panoramio they will be visible in Google Maps and Google Earth once (and if) selected. Map display selection is undertaken by Google Maps and Google Earth, which are separate entities within Google (not by UKPC or Panoramio) But your uploaded photos will be instantly visible in Panoramio and in the UKPC group (once you add them into the group). However selection and uploading into Google Maps or Google Earth is not instant (or guaranteed) - they can both take upto 4 weeks to show up on the maps - so please be patientThe UKPC Group on Panoramio2014-02-25 20:00:0027

NASA2,410,367Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008329

Mike Downes37,342Back in the day, I was a student in teacher training. I had a vacation job as a conference assistant. Equipped with a radio, I was known as *Rootes 35*. Far _too often_, the place to find us was *Meeting Room One*. It was code for *The Airport Lounge* .. which is on the first floor of this building. So, here we are twenty years later with Hangouts .. feel like sitting around and doing nothing, but chat and hatch plans, then you'll find me here .. For the eager beavers, it won't take you long to track this place down from the photo. It's still there today, much the same but totally different .. For an extra point, you can tell me _why_ it has this name .. In the last 15 months of Google+, I've met a ton of great people in Hangouts .. I want to see them again and find out what they are doing.. I will send out the invites, when the names pop out .. A Vanishing Point :- Brighton seafront and Kemp Town beach in a heavy sea mist. The long turquoise railings vanish into the haze and an entire coastal resort and city is hidden from view. The beach is now considerably higher than it was in victorian times. The steps that lead down at this point are only few in mumber as the rest plunge into the depths of the pebbles. I've been told that the beach is 15 feet or 4.57 metres deep with pebbles in places.  You can clearly see in this image that they are almost to the top of the sea wall.

Devil's Dyke :- Quite literally a legendary place and beauty spot within Sussex and just a few miles outside of the City of Brighton. The Dyke is a 100m deep V-shaped valley on the South Downs Way that got its name from a legend that stated the Devil was furious at the conversion of the area to Christianity.  The Lord of Darkness was said to be so angry that he decided to dig a dyke cutting direclty through the South Downs to enable the sea to flood in and consume the villages. It is said that Beelzebub dug the Dyke out in one night to make sure his plans were not thwarted. His nighttime efforts woke up an old woman living nearby who lit a candle to see what was going on. The light from the candle woke her cockerel who began to crow. It is said that Lucifer saw the light and heard the cockerel and was tricked into thinking it was dawn, downed his tools of darkness and the Weald was saved. Al... more »

Who's There? :- Not a monochrome image at all. It was processed in colour and not black and white. This is what happenes to Brighton when the sea mist rolls in. It sucks the life out of everything and turns the seaside resort into an eerie landscape. The gulls stop flying and traffic noise is subdued and deadened. There's a stillness that befalls all and down on the beach all you can hear is the gentle lapping of water. No waves crashing because the heavy mist has managed to control and quieten them too. The ruins of the West Pier (built in 1866) take on a ghostly form as they fade in and out as the thickness of the mist changes.

Cadence :- Low tide and sundown are a majical mix. The pools that are left behind reflect the light and the light that's not caught by the water bounces of the damp edges of everything else. This beach is vastly different from the beach a few miles to the West where you'll find all the tourists, fish and chips and ice cream stalls. This beach is quiet and exposed. A vast chalk bed emerges from beneath the pebbles and genlty slips below the waterline. This beach feels ancient.

Reflected Trees :- This is the side of the Legal & General (a financial services company) building located in The Droveway in Hove, Sussex. The one saving grace of modern architecture is that they all seem to use a lot of glass so when the conditions are right they sort of vanish or blend in for a while. Like all buildings that have sprung up over the last 20 years or there's little pleasing to the eye. It's big , it's square, it does its job.

It Comes To This :- Looking like a 'Mordor' sunset this was the scene from Brighton and Hove beach on the 28th November 2014. I'd wandered into town hoping to catch a dramatic and full on sunset but was annoyed to find thick dark cloud had kicked into touch any chance of that at all. So I decided to try a bit of 'damage control' and carried on walking along the seafront anyway in the hope that I'd spot the odd shot or two and at least get something in the camera. Just as I got to the border where Brighton and Hove meet there was a split and break in the clouds and molten light poured through amidst a thick blanket of grey. The sea threw the colour around for a while before getting bored and returned to being its moody self. This is one of the reasons I love Brighton so much, no sunset is ever the same and each and everyone is a mind blowing experience. I hear many... more »

I hear many photographers moan when people take sunset shots as they often say it's the easy way out etc. I think they've missed the point completely . It's not about how easy or difficult a shot or subject is at all ... it's about the beauty of it. Forget about f stops, apertures and your holdall full of lenses. Open your eyes, take a deep breath and rejoice in the majesty of nature and the planet we're on.

Push Bar To Open :- Sometimes the most mundane and ordinary things make the best images. I'd been walking for an hour or so along the tow path of the Grand Union Canal in Milton keynes and had eventually made it back to where I was staying. As luck would have it right next door to the hotel there was a large pub which backed onto the canal so I decided to grab a pint and rest by the water. The sun was starting to lower to the West throwing the back of the building and myself into the shade. For some unknown reason the open door grabbed my attention and I thought it was worthy of a shot. I'm not really sure what caught my eye but something must have registered with me so I took the shot and then turned my attention to the pint i'd bought.

Fairy Tale Castle :- I find it hard to look at this small but beautifully formed castle without thinking of 'Rumpelstiltskin', 'Rapunzel' and other famous tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. This is the ruin of Scotney Old Castle, a real medieval, moated manor house on an island in a small lake near Lamberhurst in Kent, England. Roger Ashburnham is credited with building the castle somehwere around 1378 to 1380 due to the French invading the coast of Sussex in 1377. Now the ruins sit at the bottom of a large landscaped garden with Scotney New Castle (built between 1835 and 1843) overlooking them.

Palace Through the Trees :- An unconventional and very different image of Brighton's famous Royal Pavilion. It was shot within the Pavilion Gardens and I was standing not too far from the large North Gate (built in 1832). Putting a construction date on the Royal Pavilion is not so simple due to it being built in three stages. It's hard to believe that this ornate and extravagnt palace started off life as a simple farmhouse. Its transformation was unwittingly sealed when the Prince of Wales rented it in 1786. The following year the Prince employed Henry Holland (the designer of Carlton House) to enlrage the building. Then in 1801 and 1802 the Pavilion was enlarged once again but this time by Peter Frederick Robinson who added a dining room and conservatory. Tor Soar :- It was May 2014, 9pm at night and I found myself standing by Bonehill Rocks looking towards Bell Tor. The sun was taking its time in going down and its light was picking out the clouds that were dancing over the scenery. This is just a small part of Dartmoor National Park, an area of moorland that covers 954 square kilometres in South Devon, England. The image was taken near the wonderfully named village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. The title relates to the paraglider who suddenly appeared to the left of Bell Tor just as I was taking the shot. If you look carefully you can make out the arc of the canopy with a small dot that is the human hanging below it.

Summer Wind :- An old barn sits high on the cliff top of Seaford Head on the South coast of England. In the distance the majestic and magnificent white face of the "Seven Sisters" cliffs can be seen as well as Birling Gap, the Belle Tout lighthouse and Beachy Head. From here it's a 15 to 20 minute walk down to the picturesque Cuckmere Haven and the famous coastguard cottages.

Pines :- Shadows and trees. I wish it were possible to infuse the image with smells too as the entire area had a wonderful thick pine aroma to it. This is "Alpine Valley" within the 18th Century lanscaped garden that is Painshill Park in Cobham, Surrey. The park was created between 1738 and 1773 and has over the last few decades been restored to its former glory.

Drained of Colour :- A dark storm creeps over the English Channel and edges its way toward the shoreline. The closer it gets the more it sucks the colour out of everything until the entire scene is a mixture of grey and brown. It was cold and clammy too. You could smell and taste the salt in the air as the pressure began to drop. It was a sign that things were about to get wet and wild so I made my escpape while I had the chance. The image was shot on the beach at Ovingdean Gap near Brighton , England.

Al... more »

A load of hogwahs but a great story all the same. It's common belief by many of Brighton's local residents that the Dyke was formed by glacial action but that's not correct as it's actually the result of solifluction (a gradual mass wasting slope process related to freeze-thaw activity) and river erosion (removal of soil and rock by water).

Painshill Lake :- The shot was taken from the path that runs over and above the Crystal Grotto in Painshill Park in Cobham , Surrey. I liked the way that the trees on iether side seemed to frame the water and reflections perfectly. It was a beautifully hot day and I was amazed to find that the park was remakably quiet and devoid of people. A few here and there but on the whole I had the place to myself.
