Today in History: Tesla Filed Patent for “Apparatus for Transmitting Electrical Energy”
On January 18, 1902 — 113 years ago today — Nikola Tesla filed a patent for an “Apparatus for Transmitting Electrical Energy.” After inventing alternating current (AC) and winning “The Currents War” against negative public relations campaigner Thomas Edison (who advocated direct current only, DC power), and after discovering the principles that led to the development of radio and smartphone industries, Tesla moved to Colorado in the summer of 1899 to conduct a series of secret experiments involved in this patent filing.
Tesla had concluded that it would be possible to transmit electrical power wirelessly and constructed a magnifying transmitter — a high power harmonic oscillator. Tesla stated at the time, “...I feel certain that of all my inventions, the Magnifying Transmitter will prove most important and valuable to future generations.” The patent was granted nearly 13 years later on December 1, 1914. (It must have taken that long for the approver to understand the mechanics and physics behind it, haha.)

Tesla spent 9 months in Colorado, conducted daily experiments and made 500 pages of notes and 200 drawings about them. Tesla proved to himself that wireless electrical energy transmission was possible, and that he could make instruments to fine-tune reception of complex electrical signals, so that only specific complex signals could be received while others were rejected. He also demonstrated that the Earth behaves as a smooth polished conductor of very low resistance and that it responds to certain frequencies of electrical vibrations.

Tesla left Colorado and returned to New York where he was able to attract initial funding of $150,000 from J.P. Morgan, who had been instrumental in the formation of General Electric. Morgan’s investment was to be used to build a high power transatlantic wireless communication project. Before it could be completed, Marconi was making regular transatlantic radio transmissions with far less expensive equipment (and while utilizing 17 of Tesla’s patents). At about this time, Morgan suffered a rare business loss when he attempted to enter the London Underground field, so when Tesla asked for more funding to complete the project, Morgan refused. From this point forward, Tesla’s personal life began a downward plunge from which he never recovered. Tesla died lonely and penniless with pigeons as his only friends.

[It is so hard to condense Tesla’s fascinating story into 3 short paragraphs. So please feel free to rewrite the above and post it as a comment. Also, if you have additional or better resources than these below, please let me know in the comments to this post. Thanks.]

All in all, a very fun birthday.

Another update to Google Drive for PC, and yet, no Linux support in sight. Come on Google, it doesn't take years to create a simple file sync utility for a quickly growing platform, especially when it's a platform you used to support with just about every app you ever made.

Was on a team with an Onyx, Semi Pro and another Silver, against unranked players and got smashed. Tried to explain to them that it was critical to push middle stronghold, but they didn't listen.

So today Slayer turned into BR Slayer on Halo 5 beta. Gotta say, I love this game way more now. The AR spam was getting super annoying. Also really liking the new maps. And that Hydra rocket launcher is super awesome. Locking onto players and killing in two shots is super cool, and the map it's on keeps it from being too OP.

My rank was almost falling out of Gold, but now it's quickly getting back up to Tier 2. BR slayer for life.

Last Friday, a group of scientists and advocates including Bill “The Science Guy” Nye, physicist Lawrence Krauss and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett, distributed a letter calling for reporters to stop using the term “skeptics” when referring to climate deniers.  The letter, sent by the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, was written after a Nov. 10 New York Times article referred to Sen. James Inhofe as “a prominent skeptic of climate change.” The group argues that “denier” and “skeptic” have been conflated by the media, and do not mean the same thing.

http://www.salon.com/2014/12/10/bill_nye_lawrence_krauss_and_others_smack_down_media_dont_call_climate_deniers_skeptics/

A distinction that I made very clear several years ago, parsing the difference carefully, here.
http://www.davidbrin.com/climatechange3.html

It is possible to be climate Skeptic!  Irritating gadflies like Freeman Dyson and especially Berkeley’s Richard Muller have for years poked at this or that aspect of the climate change consensus models, playing an important role by demanding validation of this or that aspect. It’s called the scientific method and scientists are among the most competitive humans our species ever produced.

Importantly, theses true skeptics have stated clearly what thresholds of proof might convince them, instead of perpetually moving the goal posts — which is what members of the denialist cult do, at the behest of Fox shills for coal barons and petro-sheiks. (Recently Muller announced his demands had been met; he is now convinced that human-generated climate change is real and a major threat to humanity.)

More importantly, true skeptics admit that when 97% of the experts in a field urge precautions and measures to prepare against a potentially devastating trend, that the baseline reaction of society should be to heed those experts and do at least moderate measures, just in case the experts turn out to be right after all.  Especially measures that will do good anyway, even if the experts prove wrong.

It is that trait — a willingness to negotiate pragmatically — that the few real climate “skeptics” display… and that is absolutely missing from the vast majority of science sabotaging, society-sabotaging denialist-cultists. Mostly arrogant males who watch a nuremberg rally of cable rants, and could not parse the Navier-Stokes equations or make a sophisticated gas-vapor cellular weather-climate model in twenty lifetimes.___

This.

Somehow I managed to miss it being posted over a year ago, but it sums up nearly everything I've been saying about what the web needs for many years. It doesn't need more high-level features -- it needs the low-level tools with which we can all build high-level features.

There are obviously places where the tradeoffs aren't entirely obvious -- sometimes you need to bake in something that feels a bit higher-level in order to properly abstract the underlying systems. But building "bottom-up" is the right default approach if the web is to survive as an application platform.

Matchmaking is still bugged for me in most playlists. Really hope they fix the issues soon. Want to get my Halo on today.

Master chief collection is great so far. Even with all the content, its super easy to figure out what you want to play and jump in without a ton of hassle.

Matchmaking is glitched, but I'm sure it'll stabalize by morning. The few matches I played were smooth, and honestly, most of the time I forgot I was playing over the internet. Dedicated servers are a beautiful thing. Also dat 60fps Halo is beautiful.

All in all, its everything I hoped. Can't wait to progress through all the campaigns and rank up in MP. Nightfall looks interesting so far, so it will be interesting to see where it goes. Halo 5 beta looks really exciting too. December can't come soon enough.

Ugh, why do I even read Ars links anymore? Blatant fanboyism is blatant. The fact they refer to 343 as Microsoft (Not technically incorrect, though it sets a negative, cold corporation undertone) says a lot. I'm still super excited for this release. A lot of love went into this collection, and real halo fans are very happy with what we're getting.

Make no mistake, MCC is much, much more than a simple remaster of 4 classic games.

I had no idea Destiny smoothly transitioned everything from 360 to the One. All my achievements synced on first open, and I had access to all my classes. I guess the Destiny cloud setup had one advantage afterall.

Doctor Who finale was annoying as hell. It feels like they wanted to wrap everything up, but there's too many outs left to the characters that could potentially change everything. Maybe the Christmas special will clear some things up, but somehow I doubt that.

It was a decent enough episode, but man, I can't handle it when writers leave endings with so many holes and a good chance that those holes will ever be explored again.

Goddammit Pepsi...

Just because gamers traditionally like both, doesn't mean they want them in the same package...

Doritos flavored Mountain Dew is apparently a thing...  that sounds disgusting.___Goddammit Pepsi...

Went 3-1 at FNM last night. My standard deck definitely handles a lot better. Still working on knowing which hands to keep, and still could use a couple of high end cards, but overall it's a solid deck.

The 3 packs I won were awesome too, pulled 4 rares over 3 packs, and got a fetch land (only 10 bucks now, but will be worth upwards of 30 bucks over the coming years). A very successful night of magic all in all.

Sounds like Interstellar is the scientifically minded movie of the year. Might not get a chance to see it in theaters, but definitely looking forward to watching it at some point.

God I'm sick of this GamerGate thing. Sounds like a bunch of bullshit on all sides. All sides please die find something more constructive to do, thanks.

Dammit Inbox, making me look like a fool. Didn't show any attachments on Android or Desktop, so I kept requesting the email be sent again. Go into Gmail to find out the attachment is there, and Gmail even shows an event card.

Fuck you Inbox

Seriously, it's been two years and still nothing. Pretty sad really.

Got Mac OSX running on my laptop, sorta. Was running with specific boot flags, but after trying to save some flags and then fix grub, I made it unable to boot. So creating a new USB installer so I can run a fix.

Once that's done, I should have a working OSX install, and with my USB dongle, should be able to use WiFi too. Hopefully the fix I'm trying will fix graphics, because when OSX did boot, it was stuck in super low res.

And then I decided to download OSX and try to make it run on my laptop.

Life isn't exciting enough lately. I'm looking forward to completely breaking grub and possibly losing partitions. Probably do it tomorrow though, this image is taking forever to download.

Good god, the Halo MCC legendary speedrun achievements are insane. I had no idea you could even complete all Halo 4 missions on legendary in under 3 hours. Looks like a whole list of achievements I will fail at achieving every time I try.
