Can't stop looking at this. These things are practically flying. Yet turning on a dime.

From Wikipedia:
The AC72 (America's Cup 72 class) is a wing sail catamaran box rule, governing the construction and operation of the yachts to be used in the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup selection series and the 2013 America's Cup. This new and revolutionary design is extremely expensive and has allowed the development of foils that lift the hull out of the water, in some conditions leading to extreme boat speeds well over 40 knots (74 km/h; 46 mph).
It was expected to sail faster than the wind: upwind at 1.2 times the speed of the true wind, and downwind at 1.6 times the speed of the true wind. But in fact it proved faster, averaging about 1.8 times the speed of the wind with peaks slightly over 2.3. New photo goodness for Android! Try it out

New photo features in Google+ for Android

Today’s update to Google+ for Android is all about photos. In particular, the app includes:

Non-destructive photo editing across devices
Starting today you can start your edits on one device, and continue (or start over) on another. This means you can backup full-resolution photos from your desktop, edit them in seconds on your phone, then add some finishing touches from your tablet. (And you can revert to your originals at any time!) The technical term for this experience is non-destructive editing in the cloud, and we think you'll really enjoy it.

Brand new filters and creative tools
Now when you edit your photos, you’ll have a powerful set of tools (like crop and rotate), 1-touch filters, and Snapseed-inspired enhancements (like Drama, Retrolux, and HDR Scape). Mix and match to make your photos look their absolute best.

A single view of all your photos
The new ‘All’ view displays your entire photo library — whether it’s on your current device, or backed up in the cloud. If your library is really large (> 10s of thousands of photos), the app won’t show all your photos initially. But stay tuned, because we’re supporting larger and larger libraries over the next few weeks.

An easy way to browse your photos by date
In addition to search, there’s now another way to find your photos fast. Just swipe through your photos in the ‘All’ view, and look for the scroll bar on the right. Dragging the scroll bar up or down will quickly move you forwards or backwards in time.

The app is rolling out gradually to Google Play (v4.3, http://goo.gl/ruuHW), so check back soon if you don’t see it yet. #googleplusupdate  ___New photo goodness for Android! Try it out

Two new kinds of #AutoAwesome: Twinkle and Snow

Just in time for the holidays, we’re rolling out two new ways to make your Google+ photos more awesome, automatically:

1) Twinkle: upload a new photo of something that sparkles (like a Christmas tree or a chandelier), and we'll gift you a version with lights that actually twinkle.

2) Snow: upload a new photo with snow to Google+, and we'll gift you a version with snow that’s actually falling.

In both cases, you'll get a notification when your #AutoAwesome image is ready. We hope these features help you celebrate the ‘wonder’ in winter wonderland! #googleplusupdate___Try out our two new holiday #autoawesomes

This needs to change

We just updated our Transparency Report, showing how many requests Google gets for information about its users. But we're not allowed to give the full story because the U.S. government says that requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) must be kept secret. We can tell you this: Requests have more than doubled around the world since 2009, and more than tripled in the U.S.: http://g.co/u5sp

Google's Magic Picture Machine goes beyond science fiction.

Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke said that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." But even Clarke never envisioned Google’s Magic Picture Machine.

The new Google+ photo and video features announced today by +Vic Gundotra are obviously an incredible benefit to users, unlike anything else out there.

But can we take a moment to marvel at the technology behind it?

Let's start with a magic trick:

Better RAW!

Improving RAW-to-JPEG conversion on Google+

We've supported full-size photo backups for almost a year now, and as a result many of you have been storing your RAW images on Google+. Of course: any time you view RAW files we convert them to JPEGs -- to optimize the file size, and keep the service fast.

Starting today, and thanks to +Nik Photography, our RAW-to-JPEG conversion is now significantly improved. RAW images from more than 70 different cameras will look better as a result (full list below), and we’re tuning additional models over time.

Try uploading your own RAW image, and let us know what you think! From there you can edit the JPEG copy as much as you'd like with our new editor (http://goo.gl/6QKhqW), and download the original RAW file whenever you want. #googleplusupdate

Some great improvements to Auto Enhance!

Five enhancements to Auto Enhance

Auto Enhance makes improvements to every photo you add to Google+, highlighting important details and helping your images look their best. Today we're upgrading Auto Enhance in five important ways, making your photos even more beautiful:

1) It does a better job of illuminating faces, even in darker exposures.
2) It's better at removing color casts (like the blue-ish “haze” you might see in your snowboarding pics).
3) It identifies and lightens shadows, especially in landscape images.
4) It selectively brightens night scenes, keeping the focus on your main subject.
5) And… it uses skin tones to calibrate other enhancements like fill light and warmth, ensuring a natural look and feel.

To give Auto Enhance a try, simply upload some photos then view them in the lightbox. From there you can refine Google's enhancements (http://goo.gl/6QKhqW), or undo them entirely. So add a new photo, and let us know your thoughts! #googleplusupdate___Some great improvements to Auto Enhance!

New photo editor from Google+ Photos

Get creative with the new photo editing tools in Google+

Sometimes a photo needs a little extra touch to truly stand out. To help you customize your images, we’re launching new photo editing tools right within Google+. They’re all based on the power of Snapseed, and available in the Chrome browser (thanks to its Native Client technology). Here are a few of the fun things you can do:

* Auto Enhance already makes the photos you add to Google+ look great. Now you can customize and fine tune these adjustments if you have a different look in mind.
* Selective adjust lets you make edits to specific parts of your image, so you can make that summer sky look even more blue without affecting the beach in the foreground.
* Filters like Vintage, Drama, Retrolux or Black and White give your photos a new look. Add the finishing touch with a frame.

To give the new editing tools a try, open one of your own photos in Chrome and click on “Edit” in the lightbox. You can always undo any changes you make or revert to the original image.

If you're not using the Chrome browser, you can still crop and rotate your photos in Google+ -- in fact we're making these basic editing options easier to find up front, right next to the "Edit" button. And of course on mobile, Snapseed-inspired editing is available in both the Android and iOS Google+ apps.

p.s. We're rolling out these updates gradually, so check back soon if you don't see them yet. #googleplusupdate  ___New photo editor from Google+ Photos

Google has been engaged in a massive, concerted, expensive effort to protect user data from the NSA.  And +Eric Grosse is finally talking about it in public.  Google is treating dragnet surveillance by Government as a threat akin to advanced, persistent threats by cyber criminals.

The article notes that this is not perfect security and it does nothing for Google's legal requirement to comply with legal warrants (including National Security Letters). But it raises the bar and raises the cost of illegal or unwarranted surveillance.  As it should.

I don't know how to stop the NSA from destroying what little credibility is left in the US Government.  But I'm proud to be working at a place that's at least trying to slow them down.___+1

Made me laugh again

Saw this online and thought it definitely worth sharing:

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels ..

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be right, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is cancelled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

G+ Photos on all Chromebooks!

Bringing your Google+ photos to all Chromebooks

Keeping hundreds or thousands of photos backed up and organized can be a challenge. We wanted to make that process a little easier, so earlier this summer we released the Google+ Photos app for Chromebook Pixel.

Today we’re making the app available in the Chrome Web Store for all Chromebooks, in 52 languages. Here’s a quick recap:

1) When you plug an SD card into your Chromebook, the app will automatically get to work and back up your new photos to Google+ (for your eyes only, of course).

2) When you’re offline, you can still view your most recent photos.

3) Your top shots will be highlighted as you back them up, making it easier to organize and share your favorites.

4) Easily share individual photos, sets of photos, or an entire album right from the app. Simply select the images you want, then click 'Share.'

5) Auto Enhance makes improvements to each photo you add, making your pictures look great. And Auto Awesome creates fun new versions of your photos like short animations and photobooth-style collages.

Install it on your Chromebook now: g.co/chromephotos

Access your Drive photos in G+!

See your Drive photos in Google+ (and a few other improvements)

Ever wish your Google Drive photos could get some of that Google+ goodness? Now’s your chance -- starting today you can see your Google Drive photos and videos in your Google+ library. Your photos stay in Drive, but they’ll also be visible to you in Google+ (and private until you choose to share them).

Once you choose to show Drive photos in Google+ they’ll be organized chronologically, easily searchable, and automatically enhanced to look better than ever. You might even see a few of them combined into animations and panoramas thanks to Auto Awesome. You’ll be able to see your Drive photos on the web as well as in the Google+ Android app.

While you’re browsing through old holiday and vacation pics on the desktop, you might notice a couple other changes we’ve made to Google+ Photos based on your feedback.

More control over your Highlights view. You can choose whether or not individual photos are shown in your Highlights, as well as move highlighted photos to the album of your choice.

Quicker adding to albums. Now you can pick a specific album for your photos right when you’re sharing them on Google+.

We hope you enjoy the latest improvements. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Typical LA drivers :)

This morning I saw a Google self-driving car on 85 South.  Of course, as a good technologist, I decided to test the algorithm.  So I tried to sideswipe it.  It scooted out of the way.  Then I got in front of it and slammed my brakes.  It slowed down.   LGTM!

I think the driver was smiling.

We also went to the local bass pro shop. It might be the largest store I've ever been in. I tried to take an auto-pano, but it didn't stitch.

It was 93 degrees, sunny, and raining. WTF?!?!?! But I hit a couple of balls 225+ yds, even though my form is terrible.
