On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line at the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Morris Markin, founder of Checker Cab, was born in Smolensk, Russia, and began working when he was only 12 years old. At 19, he immigrated to the United States and moved to Chicago, where two uncles lived. After opening his own tailor's shop, Markin also began running a fleet of cabs and an auto body shop, the Markin Auto Body Corporation, in Joliet, Illinois.

In 1921, after loaning $15,000 to help a friend's struggling car manufacturing business, the Commonwealth Motor Company, Markin absorbed Commonwealth into his own enterprise and completely halted the production of regular passenger cars in favor of taxis. <rant> Does anyone else see this over, and over, and over, and over again, day after day, all since this wonderful new and improved UI was thrown on released on us?

No matter how many times I use CCleaner, clean out the cache etc etc - shut down, restart - this FAT G+ system crashes on me. If it's not trying to load that chat junk, it's struggling to load everything else. Pre-change: no issues at all. Things were going great and I had a real, flowing stream. Now, I'm subjected to this all day long.

No changes to computer; same Chrome, same apps, no other changes. How about you? Still experiencing a bunch of unwanted messages like my "LOADING" one? 

My frustration level has hit 11! But I'm going to take a deep breath or two and chant a mantra or two. ha! :P </rant>

The Periodic Table of Muppets Brings Order to Wocka Wocka

Not everybody's into chemistry but you have to be a special kind of insane to not have a fondness for the Muppets. This periodic table of Muppetry is a wonderfully organized and colorful take on the history of the form than anyone (with a soul) can appreciate, chem-geek or not.

Designed by Mike BaBoon, the chart is more than just Muppet abbreviations in squares; it actually gets some real information across. The background color of each element/Muppet/muplement/elemupp represents its skin or fur, the border color stands in for any hat or hair, and the color of the abbreviation text matches its nose. On top of that, each box indicates the muppet's year of introduction, and the primary muppeteer. It's more data than you might expect, and all in a delightful form.

Walk-In Closet For Books

I know many ladies (and gentlemen) who may prefer having a walk-in closet for, well, clothes (and large shoe collections. ha!). This idea turns that notion on its head: why not have a walk-in closet for your books?

Book lovers may instantly applaud this (or instantly hate this idea). What do you think? Is it something you'd have in your home? I'm a visual person, and I like to see, and be surrounded by, my books, so I wouldn't love this. But from a purely organizational point of view, I could see how some people might embrace this idea. Hmmm.

With the greatest of sorrow I, +su ann lim , have to inform you that Jonathan Christopher Kendall, my fiancé and love of my life, died suddenly last night on 15 June 2013.  Despite the incredible efforts of our friends +Suzanne Jacob +Gaynal Brierley , paramedics and ambulance personnel he could not be revived.

Jonathan lived as he believed, telling it like it is, with wit and humour, enjoying life to the hilt, with honour, directness and compassion.  I was incredibly blessed to be the recipient of his immense love, and as each other's beloved, to share unbelievable happiness for too short a time.   Jonathan, I LOVE YOU with all my heart and miss you desperately.

Striking Photos

Do you ever see pictures sometimes and find your mind wandering incessantly over the details of the picture? I saw this one and it instantly turned my mind into many directions. The colors were striking, and those alone made me like this shot. The angular shot pulled me into a feeling of being in a futuristic world. The sign in a language other than my own sent my mind wandering down a path of questions, not unlike watching a mystery show. 

This image jumped out at me and still holds my interest. While it may simply be a photograph of a metro or tube station, to me, in my mind, it has a multitude of mysteries and questions behind it. Hmm.

Flying with Jetman

Swiss aviator and inventor Yves Rossy is the only the person in history to fly with a jet-propelled wing. He is a former military and commercial airline pilot who spent over 10 years developing and testing 15 prototypes prior to the most recent rigid carbon-fiber version with 4 jet turbines.

Jetman has made historic flights over the Swiss Alps, English Channel, and Grand Canyon with speeds up to 190 mph. The Stars and Stripes

During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that "the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white" and that "the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." The national flag, which became known as the "Stars and Stripes," was based on the "Grand Union" flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes.

Severe Weather

So, we're apparently directly in the path of this massive storm tonight. +The Weather Channel keeps showing tornadoes, 80 mph winds, hail, all hurling towards our little corner of Ohio.

See that "S" in RISK? We're right there - and the heart of the storm will be going right over us. At times like these, you have to hope for the best and plan on getting little sleep for the night. These storms are common in the midwest (especially in places like Tornado Alley), but less so in our pocket of the world. But it happens, and it's happened here before (longtime followers may recall I was without power for three days during a previous particularly nasty storm). Sigh.

Now the wait begins.

At the beginning of the zombie apocalypse food for carrions was plenty, but after a while there was less and less, but more and more birds. In order to survive they have started to feed on the walking dead.

William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope

In my experience, geeks are often an incredibly theatrical bunch. It’s hardly any wonder—we love epic stuff. We go for the larger-than-life, we’re prone to dressing up, we enjoy imitating what we find inspiring. As a kid, I found most of my friends in the greenroom of our high school, rehearsing Sondheim musicals and the occasional Martin McDonagh or Nicky Silver play. (Yeah, you read that one right.)

So you know what’s a perfect idea? Star Wars as a Shakespeare play. Because as party tricks go, who wouldn’t be into this?

Camel Bookmobile

I've been known to write a post (or 1000) about books, reading, literacy, and the power of reading upon our lives. It's one of my greatest passions - and this is by far my coolest BOOKS post of the year so far. Completely awesome!

Kenya’s mobile library also breathes, walks, and makes noise. The Camel Bookmobile brings reads to the desolate northeastern province of Kenya, near the border of Somalia. There are few streets in the isolated region, and famine and drought are familiar occurrences. The beastly bookmobile was started by a librarian in 1996 and consists of 12 camels that travel to four settlements per day, four days a week. Most of the books are written in the two main languages of Kenya — English or Swahili — and they range from children’s titles to nonfiction tomes. Secret Cinema's mission to save the movies

One of the coolest things EVER, and something I have to do someday! It's a long story but a great read throughout!

Fabien Riggall is arguing with a sheep. "Will you just move?" he asks. "We're trying to do a site visit." The site in question is a country estate north of London, Riggall is the founder of Future Cinema, which turns films into live events, and the sheep is in his way. After some persuasion, it shuffles off and Riggall continues picking his way across the muddy ground. It's a cold, grey late-February day and the light is as flat as the countryside.

The State of My Television Viewing

Lately, I've been a wreck. Sundays used to be my favourite night, with all my favs playing" The Game of Thrones, Da Vinci's Demons and The Borgias; The Walking Dead, and some time ago, Rome and other HBO shows. Now, that's all changed.

Da Vinci's Demons has too few episodes, Game of Thrones pisses me off every week and Martin can F Off; The Bogias has been cancelled, The Walking Dead comes for short spurts then leaves, and so many others stay for a short while, then disappear.

I know that's always been the nature of the beast with TV, but I want more now. Before I invest time in watching your show, I'd like to know that you'll be around for 3,4,5 seasons - or I'm splitting. Enough is enough.

I'm tired of being endlessly disappointed by TV execs.

How Kids’ Television Inspires a Lifelong Love of Science

When you’re a parent in the thick of raising young children, the days go by in such a blur that it’s hard to remember what your kids learned when. But Trina Helfrich, a mother of two, has a vivid memory of the day her son Henry, who was around four, learned one of his first science and math lessons.

The TV had been tuned to “Sid the Science Kid,” a show for children ages three to six. The theme of the episode was measurement. The children on the show—puppet-like creatures created via 3-D animation—were learning about how all sorts of objects can help them measure and compare the sizes of large things.  One of the main characters, a preschool-aged boy named Gerald, lit up.
