I made a radio station from this song. It has incorporated music from my library and other music from the Google libraries. It is a lovely soundtrack for a rainy day spent in the library working on my dissertation.

"...how utterly unfair this state of affairs is for children at the lower end of the income distribution. No matter how hard their parents try and how diligent their teachers are and how much determination (or the new buzzword “grit”) they have, they do not have access to the material and social resources that are increasingly commonplace for more affluent kids—and available in abundance for the wealthy."

Highly recommend this extension. It works with the new G+ layout.

Two thoughts: 1) Commercials on YouTube are more irritating than most commercials; 2) Silicone breast implants are not equal to silicon and show the sexism that is pervasive in science.

How important is this acquisition? Tumblr has been around for a very long time, but is now this popular. Also, with other sites, like Posterous (when Twitter took it over) being closed down, how does this affect the future of sites like Tumblr?

Google Play, the world’s largest eBook collection, just got bigger. Now, you can upload your own files to Google Play Books to access on your Android (http://goo.gl/dxf9K), iOS (http://goo.gl/5wk00) and the web (http://goo.gl/FcHPe). Whether you’re a student with a backpack full of PDF printouts or an avid reader with hundreds of pages held captive on your computer, relieve your back and start adding files today!
After uploading your files, you can enjoy reading them with all the nice features available: bookmarks, highlights and notes, dictionary and more. What’s more, your reading progress, highlights etc are synced to the cloud, so if you have multiple devices, you can easily pick up reading anywhere!
And the Google Play Books app has a fresh new design. We’ve introduced a Read Now section with books you’ve recently purchased, uploaded or read, giving you access to what you want ... more »

Since several people have asked about this: If you want to see posts in a single column in the new Google+ UI, instead of in multiple columns, scroll to the top of your stream. To the right of your circles is a "More" menu. At the very bottom of that menu there's an option to switch between single- and multi-column mode.

Some highly-requested improvements to Hangouts On Air
Have you ever missed the beginning of a live Hangout On Air and wanted to rewind? How about viewing and sharing your recording right after your broadcast, versus waiting for "processing…"? Today we're launching these, and two other features, to improve your Hangouts On Air experience:
- Rewind live broadcasts. Regardless when you start watching, you can always go back to the beginning.
- Access recordings immediately after your broadcast. Once you're no longer On Air, your recording will be waiting for you on YouTube.
- Watch higher quality Hangouts On Air on the go. If you're tuning in from your mobile device, you'll notice better-looking video.
- Start live broadcasts without having to refresh. When you visit a page with a Hangout On Ai... more »

South Station has #goneGoogle
Boston commuters can now get some work done while waiting inside for the T, train, taxi or bus at South Station. Starting today, we’ve invested in a new infrastructure to support free public WiFi at South Station.
We’ve helped Boston businesses go Google, from Costco to Johnny Cupcakes. And we also understand that Bostonians want to be connected, whether at work, home or on the go. The new WiFi network at South Station will help Bostonians get the most out of the web and make the most of their city.

I have been following (and participating in) MOOCs since the beginning of them. I've participated in the Michigan State webinars on MOOCs, engaged in the discussions on the WPA listserv, attended numerous conference presentations on them (ATTW, GPACW, CCCC, etc.) and still have concerns.
At graduation on Friday, the speaker said that he sees MOOCs as a resource to courses, but not a replacement for courses.
With the schools participating in the Gates Foundation supported writing MOOCs having questions regarding whether this is viable for writing in large-scale feedback-required courses, how do we begin to think about assessment and feedback that goes beyond peer feedback for MOOCs -- or can we?
I have attached another article that was in the Chronicle on MOOCs and the move to not use them.

Advertising has gone through waves of changes throughout history, while maintaining the mindset of captivating an audience in the most compelling of ways.
Whether to inspire, to evoke emotion, to educate or to entertain, today’s age of advertising is now more driven by creative and innovative usages of technology and digital media. We are more connected to the world and to the brands we love than ever before, through various means and channels that were never thought possible.
The project Art, Copy & Code (http://www.artcopycode.com) is experimenting with innovative brands to bring amazing ideas to life through technology. The project outlines a series of six trends in digital creativity.
This week, we will be posting a daily post that will illustrate one of these 6 trends in digital creativity along with an example from a brand that brings these conce... more »

This creature is called Glaucus atlanticus. It is an extremely dangerous, camouflaged sea slug. It preys on venomous animals like the Portuguese Man-Of-War. The slug consumes the entire organism and stores only the most venomous nematocysts for its own use. The venom is then concentrated, which produces a more powerful venom than that of the Man-Of-War jellyfish it feeds on. Glaucus atlanticus is also a hermaphrodite, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs... A truly unbelievable animal. https://www.googlesciencefair.com/

The Grand Canyon is, by far, my favorite place to visit. I've been there a lot (I used to live within 90 miles of it). It is my go-to place to remind myself of where I am in the universe and how little most of my problems are. It also reminds me that there is stunning beauty beneath our feet and we forget to think about it as often as we should.

Publish & Perish
http://girlgeniusadventures.com/2013/04/04/publish-perish/
The publisher of +Phil Foglio and +Kaja Foglio's 'Girl Genius' books (Night Shade Books) is folding. The contracts are being sold off to Skyhorse Publishing who are rewriting them using very unfavorable terms:
"[...] Night Shade, which has decided to sell our contract to another publisher in order to cover their debts. This other publisher, Skyhorse, is perfectly willing to buy Night Shade’s assets (our contracts). However, they will rewrite them and everybody now gets paid a flat 10% of net sales. Let me put this another way; If I was a monkey, I’d be throwing this.
However it gets even better. A certain percentage of Night Shade authors have to agree to this hose job before the deal goes through. Yay! We’re safe! You’d have to be an idiot to sign onto this! Tr... more »

a moment
wynn hotel
las vegas, nevada
One of the delights of walking around Vegas at night is seeing well-lit scenes that are seemingly so foreign to the actual city. I've always loved the waterfalls at the Wynn, and at night the entire scene is wonderful. What made it even better was the silhouettes. I caught this shot on the fly, while walking down the street and trying to catch up to family. It was worth the stop.

One of my favorite places to visit in Las Vegas is the Bellagio Hotel. It's magical. Not only are the fountains amazing, but the indoor gardens are fantastic. The day we visited, the butterflies were so gorgeous, but even better was the sunlight on the tulips. It was an enchanted moment.

Googler Spotlight: Self-writing code engineer
Our engineers work on all kinds of interesting projects, from Gmail to data centers to self-driving cars. We spoke to software engineer Taylor Santo, who developed our latest innovation, self-writing code.
How did the idea for self-writing code come to you?
I have a friend who works on the self-driving car project and he’s always bragging about how easy it is to commute when the car does the work for him. One day, it occurred to me— it’s one thing to save your effort and energy on the commute to work, but it would really be awesome to save your effort and energy while you’re AT work.
How did you go about actually creating the self-writing code program?
It was pretty simple to write actually. I just put a function within a function, a loop within a loop, copy-and-pasted a few times an... more »

I was in Vegas for a conference and was fortunate enough to meet up with a high school friend to go shoot photographs at the boneyard (neon graveyard). We had a lot of fun and re-lived some of our own history through the old neon signs.
This was my first major outing with my Olympus OM-D E-M5. It is a delight to shoot with. I can't wait to really play with it.
