Island Blues - Providencia, Colombia

I’m a sucker for sunsets, sunrises, silhouettes and reflections – so naturally, I was like a kid in a candy store on my first evening and morning on Providencia. The shot was taken an hour or two after arriving on the island, as the sun set near Santa Isabel.

So psyched to show off my brand new site & identity rebrand today.  Spread the word, and if you or any of your friends are getting married, I'd love to tell your story.

MUST-SEE ADVICE - NORWAY

Hi all - I'm just beginning to plan a trip to Copenhagen & Norway in September. I have Copenhagen down, but need some SERIOUS advice on some good locations to see, enjoy and most importantly, make some photographic art.

The amount of locations to visit seems overwhelming - between the fjords, Arctic Circle, Lofoten, etc. - so any help would be much appreciated! I'll take much anything - a great view, a great hike, a quaint little town - you name it!

Moonrise - Flatiron District, NYC

I walked around the Flatiron district again to test out the Fuji x100, and was lucky enough to find this building at the right moment. I loved how the setting sun lit the upper part of the building, while the streetlight almost seemed to be looking over the rising moon. The interplay of contrasting blue & orange tones sealed the deal.

A New Day - Providencia, Colombia

I’m a sucker for sunsets, sunrises, silhouettes and reflections – so naturally, I was like a kid in a candy store on my first evening and morning on Providencia. This shot was taken from the balcony of our posada the morning after my previous shot, looking over Crab Caye (Cayo Cangrejo) as the sun rose. I shot off a few frames and then happily crawled back in bed, mission accomplished.

VIEW FROM THE TOP

To view this image larger (and I suggest you do - trust me!) please visit my blog: http://brianfurbush.com/blog/2012/01/el-pico-panorama/

This is easily one of my favorite photos that I’ve taken to date, and the first real panorama I’ve presented. This is a stitch of 27 photos taken in portrait orientation from the top of El Pico on Providencia, the tallest point on the island at roughly 360 meters (1,181 feet). As you can see, the interior of the island is volcanic and lush, while the exterior is ringed by amazing beaches and an incredible coral reef. It was a blast hiking up through the rainforest, and the absurd humidity made the fresh ocean breeze at the top that much better.

TRAVEL ADVICE NEEDED - ST. LUCIA

We just booked our hotels/B&Bs for a trip to St. Lucia in 23 days...we'll be there February 6-13, and I'm truly excited to relax while taking in and creating art from some breathtaking scenery.

I need some friendly travel advice on some good local restaurants, markets, sights off the beaten trail, and photographic opportunities - any/all input welcomed! Thanks everyone!

BARCELONA ABSTRACT

I was inspired this past weekend to return to some of my images from Barcelona. It’s fairly amazing how many shots I seem to glaze over on my first few passes, and it’s always fun to come across a frame I missed that I enjoy. This abstract was taken inside the attic of Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Batlló.

HERE'S TO 2011

2011 was an absolutely incredible year in so many ways for me. Between traveling to Colombia, Spain, Las Vegas and everywhere in between, I’ve been humbled to have been provided the opportunity to see and experience things I never would have dreamed I’d do. I’ve forged incredibly close friendships with fellow photographers and other travelers, and I’m truly grateful for that. I’m extremely excited to attack 2012 with a newfound focus and plenty of opportunities and new projects in the works, and I’m thankful for everyone who has supported me throughout the year – in person, on this blog, and elsewhere. I’m looking forward to sharing some surprises with you in the next few months, and I can’t thank everyone enough for such an awesome year. Here’s to 2011, and to an even better 2012.

REFLECTIONS IN BLUE I

Here is one of two frames I'll show today from Washington, DC to round out my set. The Capitol Building is easily one of the most-photographed and iconic sites in DC, but I decided regardless to head over to to the Capitol Reflecting Pool to shoot it during the blue hour. It was absolutely frigid out, with a fairly stiff wind messing up any chances of a perfect reflection, but I came away pretty happy with these images. I thought the Capitol Christmas Tree was also a nice touch for the holidays!

I also missed +Jose Vazquez by about 20 minutes - you can see his shots from that outing on his stream!

WASHINGTON, DC // PREVIEW

I spent the past weekend in Washington, DC, visiting my girlfriend, my cousin and her boyfriend. I was also able to scout out the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, where I'll be shooting a wedding in April during the heart of cherry blossom season...but I digress. This is a shot of the iconic Washington Monument as the sunset light fades into the blue hour. More to come later this week once I finish my civic duty - jury service!

PROVIDENCIA // MONOCHROME

This is probably my last monochrome image for today, but the series will continue I'm sure! Santa Catalina Island, a smaller island connected by a short bridge to Providencia, was home to an enormous amount of different species of crabs and lizards. I captured this character sunbathing atop a cannon...seems to be enjoying himself!

An awesome house we came across near the Bluffs area of Providencia...the entire thing was lined with conch shells!
