Odonata a Day 1/365 (Second year!)
I thought I'd start out this new year with my accomplice and a damselfly. That's David, my son, studying a blue-ringed dancer damselfly (Argia sedula) at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve, Gilbert, Arizona.

A blog post, for those who like blogs. Mostly the stuff I said earlier: A year. Yea me! Now to move on and take more and better photos.
P.S. Thanks really goes to +Michael Hensley for letting me steal his idea (and for still having inspiringly good shots)!

Ode A Day, The Complete 2012-2013 Collection!
I finished! A little late, but that's life. And by request (OK, mostly because I want to), I'm starting another year's worth today. (If school can start in the middle of the year, then so can my odonata projects.)
This is only half to two-thirds of the shots in a rough collage, but I can't justifiably spend any more time on a gimmicky image of crappy versions of my photos, so you get the idea.
A few plans for this next set:
1. More locations. I've relied really heavily on half a dozen ode havens. While part of this is because I have a job (usually), a kid, a family, and all that good stuff; and I do not have infinite gas money and time to spend tracking them down; I would like to branch out quite a bit more. I know there are some great spots I've yet to hit, and I bet there are new o... more »

Nursery Spider...
Nursery Spiders derive their names from the way they handle their eggs. The female carries the egg sac with her fangs to a suitable location and then builds a web to suspend it from a leaf or high shrub. Once the web has been spun and the sac is protected, the female will then stand guard until all of the eggs hatch.

Odonata a Day 365(!!)/365
And to finish off this year's worth of odes, back to an old favorite -- a flame skimmer dragonfly (Libellula saturata), captured in the Demonstration Garden at Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
So what do y'all think; should I go for another year? I'm thinking of it -- I just got some good damselfly shots today, including some nice damsel-on-damsel action of both the cannibal and copulatory variety. Maybe I'll do a roundup, with some lessons for the next round: More locations, wider variety, etc. Any other tips?
Of if you prefer, as always: Look at the pretty dragonfly!

Odonata a Day 364/365
A bedraggled common green darner dragonfly (Anax junius) sunning its wings after getting trapped against our house late last year. (I don't see them as often, wide-ranging as they are, but their season goes later than many.) It flew off shortly after this.
P.S. Since the new layout came out, I seem to be unable to share/upload exactly as I had been: I used to go to the album, upload the latest shot, and then it would prompt me to share it from there, adding the photo with a link to the album. Now it just uploads it and I can't seem to share it except to go back into the album and hit "share" (which is why these last few are linkless). Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
We now return to our regular dragonflying. Last one tomorrow!

I think I have a shot kind of similar to this, but this one is a different dragonfly-showing-me-his-butt shot. They like to do that when I'm around, it seems. (It's actually obelisking, or angling the abdomen vertically to help minimize exposure to the sun.)

Odonata A Day 354/365
I was at Boyce Thompson Arboretum one day when someone tapped me on the shoulder and said "I've heard you're the person to go to with these kinds of things," and showed me this canyon rubyspot damselfly (Hetaerina vulnerata). I'm not quite sure how my reputation preceded me, but I kind of like that I'm the dragon and damsel lady now. I spent a few moments deliberating on whether it was an American or canyon rubyspot (it's the latter, with no green iridescence and clear brown wingtips, not pictured), gave her a rundown on the difference between the two as far as I knew, gave her daughter a primer on dragonflies vs. damselflies, and we all watched him fly away. I'm pretty sure we forgot to tell each other our names. I guess sometimes insects are more interesting to me than people.

Odonata a Day 351/365
I’ve been helping my kid wrap up a science fair project all day in addition to my Spider Sunday curating duties, so I told him to pick a shot I hadn’t used yet. This outtake isn’t my favorite, but he says I don’t have enough flight shots, so please excuse a slightly blurry blue dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis) taking off from his perch at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve, Gilbert, Arizona.
I'll get him next time. For a dose of super-clear, gorgeous dasher pics, check out +April Hill's latest shots!

For my contribution to #SpiderSunday , a marbled cellar spider (Holocnemus pluchei) eating a green lacewing insect (family Chrysopidae). Cellar spiders, from the family Pholcidae (called "daddy longlegs" by some, but I avoid that catch-all term because it's too confusing) eat darn near anything. Apparently they'll prey on huntsman spiders and widow spiders -- I saw one trying to lure out a black widow on my wall, and feared for it until I realized I had it backward! I've even seen one ensnare a large wasp.
Keep sharing your super spiders (and other awesome arachnids) for #SpiderSunday !
