Gailen Mapes62,568Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera  A-C - 14 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to April 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting March 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-04-14 10:20:0519710412

Alex Rings

Not the kind of photo that I post usually but there's a small story behind this.

I suppose most of you don't know that I'm a goldsmith (and I make specifically wedding rings, selling them wholesale to the jeweller shops)

Last week I had a special order by a client who asked for these extra wide rings from polished rose gold and matte white gold.
Not my everyday workflow and quite challenging to make right, they took me about a whole day to make but they came out really nice so I wanted to photograph them to somehow "document" the whole thing. My setup was quite quick and simple but they don't look too bad...

...and yes in case anyone wonders, my nick-name "alexring" comes from my job...

Lochan an Ais, Scotland

I was looking for a photo to submit to a certain Challenge in flickr, themed "Wild Places" where everything in sight should be completely unspoiled by any human intervention.

Well, it was more difficult than I though (as seascapes were not allowed), so looking at various photos, shot at some wilderness, I remembered this one.

This is the little lake (as the name suggests) Lochan an Ais in the Scotland highlands, looking towards the popular Stac Pollaidh peak, as I photographed it one cold summer morning back in 2011.

Although I didn’t have to do any wild hike to get there (the main A835 road is right on my back), the view towards this way is completely unspoiled by any modern “additions”, making it my choise for the Challenge.

Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre

This is the wonderful little village of Riomaggiore, the first of the five villages of the "Cinque Terre" in northern Italy.
I was really glad to be back recently and despite not spending too much time there I had the chance to shoot a few long exposures, something I wanted to do for a long time.

*Westerhever leuchtturm"

This past summer during our holidays, Manuela’s sister was willing to keep the children for a few days (thanks Johanna!) so we could have a “mini vacation” on our own.

So without too much thought we found ourselves wandering at the north-western coast of Germany. As I said I was not really prepared for that so I had not read in advance what to visit or not. When we drove to the town of Sankt Peter-Ording with the amazing huge sand beach, we liked the place a lot and decided to spend the night there so we could see more of it on the next day.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for me) on the next morning the weather was horrible with rain, stormy winds and cold. Not the best weather to stroll around but I was not going to give up so easily (since these conditions can provide some great photo opportunities…) I followed my usual routine on getting to know an unknown place by having a look at the post cards on display at various touristic shops. There I saw this bright red lighthouse with the two symmetrical houses on the sides, which immediately grabbed my attention. After a quick search I found out that it was really close to the area, so we decided to drive there and see if we can find it. Though the lighthouse was visible from very far away, the whole area was surrounded by big dykes to prevent the sea from flooding the land so while driving on the road it was not so easy to see where the lighthouse was. I had to stop every now and then, climb on the dyke and see how close we were and which way we should drive.
Finally we arrived at a small parking were you were supposed to leave the car and walk to the lighthouse, yet there was nothing in view. But when I run to the top of the dyke I was stunned by what I saw in front of me! The lighthouse was straight ahead in the middle of some very green fields and the sky was full of those fast-moving dark clouds.
I was really lucky at that point as the rain had stopped briefly, so I ran back to the car and fetched the tripod (it was impossible to hold the camera steady with that damn wind, not even with a wide lens on) and started taking a few photos. Then I noticed at the base of the dark clouds on the far background, a grey curtain getting bigger and bigger and I knew there was some heavy rain coming. So as I had everything already set, I decided to shoot a long exposure and see what I’d get. By the end of the shot big droplets started to hit my face and eyes and I had to “evacuate” ASAP. By the time I was in the car, trying to catch my breath back, all hell had broken loose outside but I was really happy as I had got what I wanted. One of my most faves from the whole journey…___

Plus One Collection III

I wanted to do that for a long time, but always was too busy to do it. Thankfully I did it on the last moment thanks to the restless efforts of  +Ivan Makarov and the great book team.
Go on people and spread the word, it's a great cause (and a wonderful book too!)

Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Summertime

It was the 17th of August. The sun was shining all over, not a hint of a cloud on the sky, temperature was around 40oC all over the country and people were rushing to the beaches trying to cool themselves in the transparent blue waters.

Of course all these were happening in Greece, but on that day we seemed to be on a completely different planet! At the wonderful beach of Sankt Peter-Ording in northern Germany, it was extremely cold, windy and rainy, so much that for quite a long time we couldn’t even get out of the car! When we eventually did, we had to try really hard to move against the wind (or even to stand upright) and of course it was completely pointless even trying to open an umbrella, as you might end (Mary Poppins-like) in Poland or even further away…

Thankfully the rain came in and out in waves, so there were times that you had to fight only wind and cold to get a photo or two. On a moment like this, I managed to capture Manuela (or whatever you can see of her) in the middle of this majestic for me scenery.

You might think I’m a loonie but I prefer a hundred times these kind of conditions (at least as long as it doesn’t rain ALL the time) to the boring, cloudless, body-melting Greek summer…___

alex@work

It was inevitable. After all these years with me, Manuela got a bit of the bug and this summer during our vacation she took quite a lot of photos. I'm only proud to say that although she knows very little about photography and despite using the crappy Panny, many of them are really good!

Seems that one of her fave subjects was me, while trying to photograph various things. Here is one that I really like, little Alex in front of the wonderful St. Bartholomä on the Königssee in southern Germany, a really great place to be! Did I shoot anything at least equally worthy to Manuela's shot?? I hope so, so stay tuned...

Cape Heraeon Full Moon

I shot this at about 1:00 in the morning of the 10th of August, under the biggest full moon of the year, the so-called Supermoon.

I did not have time to catch the moon at its rising as I did last year in Cape Sounion, so I decided that at least I could photograph some interesting moonlight scene. So together with my friend Hovanes and his lovely sister Lizet (who was kind enough to be my "timer", as my remote timer has gone bananas...) we headed for the Cape Heraeon, where after some wandering around we ended up capturing this. You can guess that the actual scene was much-much darker and it's really amazing how much the moonlight captured by the camera, looks like daylight!

The boathouse

This is my contribution to the first day of autumn, shot about a month ago, as I was lucky enough to meet an autumn scene in the middle of the summer (not so much calendar-wise but have in mind that during those days we've had 40oC in Greece...)

This is the wondeful Obersee (Upper lake) near the famous Koenigsee in south Germany. I really love this place (you can tell as this was my third time there...) and as I was walking a bit off the beaten path, I found this wonderful scenery which I definitely had to shoot. So I went back to the family and returned with the tripod and the ultra wide lens. This is what I came up with and I can say that I'm pretty pleased by the result.

Inveraray, Scotland

Shot this one from the window of our room in Inveraray, Scotland, back in 2011.

I must say that from the many rooms that we've changed during our vacations all over Scotland, this one was one of the best and the view was really superb!

Yet another one of these kind of monochrome-color photos that I upload lately because of a new group my good friend +John Leech  started in Flickr. You can have a look (and feel free to join and contribute if you have something suitable) here:

Lofoten in the mist

This is one of the first glimpses we’ve had of the famous Lofoten islands in Norway, as we approached them from the islet of Tranøy, back in 2010.

The Lofoten islands are full of spectacular mountains, not so much because of their sheer size (most of them are about 1000m/3000ft high) but because they’re so steep and so close to the sea that you can see the whole 1000m walls emerging vertically right in front of you.

Lago di Como morning light

I shot this one about a year ago, early in the morning on the west shores of lago di Como, Italy.
At that day we had stayed in Como and I woke up early to see what I could capture around the lake. Found quite a lot of interesting scenes, this one is certainly among them.

Xylokastro, Greece

On Saturday we went to the coastal town of Xylokastro, about one and a half hour drive from Athens, on the Corinthian gulf, Greece, as a cousin of ours was getting married there.

There was a big party after the wedding, and we’ve all had a great time, so next morning (and having slept at about 4:00am) I definitely was not up too early. But as the others had slept even later than me and I seemed to be the only one awake, I decided to have a look at the nearby coast. The light was fantastic, with strong winds clearing the atmosphere, great clouds at the other side of the gulf and wonderful colors in the rough foreground water, so I thought these little rocks would make for a nice long exposure. And I must say that judging from the result I was not wrong. I did just some minimal processing as the scene was ready-made from the start.

Xylokastro, Greece

On Saturday we went to the coastal town of Xylokastro, about one and a half hour drive from Athens, on the Corinthian gulf, Greece, as a cousin of ours was getting married there.

A big thanks to Mrs. Sofi and her husband who were observing from their balcony the stranger with the big bag and the tripod who was photographing just a few rocks for over an hour and were kind enough to offer me a cup of coffee and their balcony view whenever I wanted :-))___

Obersee Selfie

I know this may not seem a lot like the typical summer photo but it was shot on the 31st of August in Germany (northern hemisphere…) so typically it was still summer.

This is the lake Obersee (Upper lake), a small mountain lake in Bavaria, very close to the more famous Königssee and this was my third time there, something I have wanted to do for years. In fact the whole scenery is so breathtaking that I’d be happy to revisit tomorrow morning!

Despite the looks we were very lucky with the weather because a) I really like these conditions and b) it rained hard before we got there AND just after we left but it didn’t rain at all for the almost two hours we were by the lake.

The waterfall you see on the left (reflected on the lake too) is Röthbachfall and though you may not be able to tell by the photo, it's the highest waterfall inGermany... more »

The waterfall you see on the left (reflected on the lake too) is Röthbachfall and though you may not be able to tell by the photo, it's the highest waterfall in Germany, with a vertical drop of 470 metres (1540 ft)!

Though I was very busy trying to shoot everything around I thought it would be a pity not to shoot a selfie in this most favorite place of mine. My posture is definitely not the most natural, since I had no level place to stand on. So I had to pretend to be a stork and put all my weight on one foot while trying to look like I’m standing on both… Anyway these are rather minor details, as I must say I’m quite pleased by the end result.___

Heraeon Sunset

Yesterday along with my friend Hovanes and his lovely sis (and my good assistant ;-) Lizet, we drove to Cape Heraeon, near Loutraki, Greece,  to get some moonlight photos (more on this to come).

On our way and while we drove round a bend from where you can see for the first time the whole Cape from afar, a magnificent sunset was taking place in front of us, so we didn't miss the chance to take a few photos from up there.

A welcomed bonus by mother nature!

Fyropotamos, Milos

Another photo of one of my favorite small fishing villages in MIlos island, Greece.

The decayed door in the foreground belongs to one of these Milos-trademark houses called "syrmata", used by the fishermen to store their boats in the winter time. Don't be fooled by the almost still water seen here, the sea can get very rough at these places...

These are the wonderful emerald waters of the Tsigrado beach (actually the one right next to it) in the Greek island of Milos.

So far this summer I'm too busy to go to the sea (or shoot any photos of it) so seeing everyone posting summer photos, I decided to post one from last year.

Thankfully summer is still young, so I hope I'll manage to have a swim or two in a place like this...

Plathiena beach, Milos

I have been way too busy lately and haven't been to the sea at all this year, so I thought I might post a photo of our first swim from last year...

This was shot at the wonderful beach of Plathiena in Milos island, Greece, during the Easter holidays. Usually I'm not swimming until the weather is really hot, but even though it was just the first days of May, the sea and the whole place was so inviting that I could not resist taking a dive or ten...

The re-shot

This is somehow a reshot of a photo I had shot back in 2008 from the same spot  in Manarola, one of the "Cinque Terre" villages in northern Italy.

I liked the result of the old one, so during my recent visit I was looking to somehow replicate it. I could not find the exact angle (maybe the plants have changed a bit in those years) but at least I tried to do something similar, only with a wider lens.
Initially I had shot three shots with the intention of merging them (from darker to brighter) but this is all from processing the middle one.
Took me quite a long time to process due to heavy distortions (because the camera was looking down) and difficult light but in the end (and thanks to the nice clouds) I think I like it at least as much as my 2008 "original".

You can see the 2008 photo here:

The Wave II

The Mediopadana highspeed-railway station near Reggio Emilia designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava.

This is the second of the last two photos from this angle, shot in a hurry before we left (as the spouses were getting bored to death...) and as the rest were waiting for me, during our recentr Flickr meet in northern Italy.

Funny thing is that I had my reservations about following the others to the station as it was about two hours driving from were we stayed, but in the end getting there proved to be the right decision as I got some of my most favorite photos from the whole meet.
Seems the weather helped with the whole decision as it was quite rainy to do anything else but it proved to be great for this place.

Manarola, Cinque Terre

Another one of my Cinque Terre photos, shot during our recent Flickr-meet and I must say one of my very faves!
Though this was my fourth visit to the place, I had been up this hill just once and as I remembered the view to be quite spectacular, I really wanted to revisit.
This time the weather was on my side and there were some very nice clouds on the sky (unlike the completely cloudless one from my last visit) Combine that with the fact that we were in the middle of spring and everything was in full bloom and you can see why I think I really got what I was hoping for...

This is Vernazza, the fourth of the "Cinque Terre" villages in north Italy, shot during our recent Flickr-meet.
My Flickr-friends moved on towards Monterosso, but I stayed back as I felt I had some "open accounts" with Vernazza. You see, last time I had visited it, more than 10 years ago, I didn't made any really good photos, so I had to try this time...
The weather was quite flat so I didn't expect any spectacular results but I'm quite satisfied by the look of this.

Manarola, Cinque Terre

This is a shot I have wanted to do for a long time.

This was my fourth visit to this place in that last 15 years but the previous one was back in 2008 when I only had the D50 and knew nothing about long exposures.

So it was on my "future plans" to go back with a better camera and shoot some LEs, which was fulfilled during our recent Flickr-meet at the area.

Is it up to the expectations? Maybe a little rougher see would help but I'm rather pleased with what I've got.

Anyway I need something to dream about for when I'll go back again with that D800 ;-))

Varena, lago di Como

It's Friday today so it's time for my "regular" weekly post of one of my photos from Italy, shot last summer on our holidays around the great Italian lakes.

This is the wonderful village of Varenna at the east coast of Lago di Como.
We got there (all by chance) at exactly the right time of the day and really liked it so much that though it was quite far from where we stayed, we visited it twice.

This one was shot on our first visit, a few moments after we arrived. Glad to report that after I was done with photography we've had some yummy pizza at one of the trattorias  you see on the right :-)

Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso

This is the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso on Lago Maggiore in Italy.

I had visited it for the first time about ten years ago and last summer when we decided that we'd be at the area again, I knew I had to re-visit it.

Being together with the family on vacation doesn't leave you free to serve your photo "duties", so we happened to visit the place on a rather bad (for photography) hour of the day (too early) when the sun was behind the big rock face and most of it was dark.

Luckily there were other interesting sights too in the area and we didn't drove away, so a couple of hours later I got "permission" from the family and drove some 10 km's back to the hermitage to take among others this one, which I must say came out quite as I had imagined it earlier in the morning.

Checking the EXIF (and the clouds on the sky) you may notice that this is a 176 sec. exposure and then you may wonder how on earth these people stood so still for such a long time! Well, actually it's a blend of two photos, one LE for the sky and water and a normal one for the ground. The ground came out a little soft on the LE (rather due to the f18 I used to avoid adding another ND filter on top of my 10-stop one) so it came handy to have a normal exposure taken at exactly the same spot.

This is Russian pianist Valery Kuleshov (whom I had never heard before but found him through this video and a little research I did afterwards )
He plays (fantastically) my favorite "Stars and Stripes forever" by John Philip Sousa which was transcribed for piano by the great Vladimir Horowitz and you can find in so many interpretations today. The thing is that when Kuleshov wanted to play it back in the 80's, there was no published transcription available, so he had to make his own by listning to Horowitz's LPs! Anyone knowing just a bit about music must realize how difficult this is! This video here shows obviously the encore of some concert (where the orchestra musicians don't really know what the soloist is gonna play) and it's really priceless seeing the faces of the musicians and some of the audience, especially as the piece reaches its conclusion. Lago di Piano, Italy

I took this photo at the small Lago di Piano in Italy, situated between the more famous  Lago di Lugano and Lago di Como and though I was quite disappointed by the look of it on my camera screen, it turned out pretty good after some careful processing. Actually, due to the huge dynamic range it's four bracketed shots merged manually in one in Photoshop.

You can read a quite detailed tutorial about how I did it (which is how I generally work at situations like this) here:

I'm re-sharing this photo I shot a few months ago at the Olympic Complex of Athens, Greece, as this is my submission for the 3rd series  of the wonderful project  #PlusOneCollectionIII  run by +Ivan Makarov and +Andy Lee

Summer Storm

This is an old photo taken near the town of Brakel in Germany.

It was August of 2007 and I was driving on a national road near Brakel, when I noticed that the sky that was all clear and sunny up to that moment, started getting cloudy and darker.

OK no big deal you might say, but as the moments passed it was getting REALLY dark and threatening. I stopped the car and looking behind me I saw a big front of black clouds approaching my area. “Wow” I thought to myself “I’ve got to photograph this but I need a better scenery that just a national road…”

So I got into the car again and hurried driving some more, looking at the minor roads to the left and right of my road. Finally I found one to the right that seemed to go a little upwards and thought that it might give me some good view. Drove around 1 km in this, stopped and got out of thecar quickly... more »

Finally I found one to the right that seemed to go a little upwards and thought that it might give me some good view. Drove around 1 km in this, stopped and got out of the car quickly as the clouds were already above me and some drops started hitting the windshield, thinking that was my last chance to shoot a couple of photos before the heavens opened. Indeed I took just a few photos and then hurried back into the car as some cats and dogs started falling from the sky… That was a severe storm but luckily it lasted just for 15-20 minutes after which it was all back to nice and clear…

This is my original pp from that date, it’s not the best possible but it doesn’t look bad either, so I’ve left it as it is.

Found it again today for a challenge in flickr and thought I might post it here too.

I'll be back...

That was my first visit ever to Kalohori, right out of the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece.
It's near the confluence of three major Greek rivers that form a large Delta and quite a few lagoons. In the past I've seen some wonderful photos from the place from many good Greek photographers and of course I wanted to visit for a long time but didn't have the chance as it is quite far from my home.

Finally I found the chance last December when we stayed with friends for a few days at the town of Katerini.
Unfortunately the weather was quite bad for most of our time there and didn't allow us to do a daily excursion all together as we had in mind, but that didn't prevent me from waking up too early on our last day, drive the 80km's to Kalohori into the night with constant rain and strong winds hitting the car and finally arrive... more »

Many interesting things and places to photograph but the weather was going from bad to worse and I could not even get out of the car.

A drove around for a couple of hours and was very lucky to be at the right place during the only (little) pause of the storm, just enough to shoot this photo and another one I may post soon. After a few minutes I had to throw everything back in the trunk of the car as heavy rain and wind started again...

It's sure good having a photo or two instead of nothing but I'll definitely be back...

Misty morning

I’m definitely not a bird shooter and I must admit I don’t get any particular pleasure by shooting or even seeing other people’s bird photos.
But sometimes (very rarely I reckon) things change and some birds look as if they carry a big sign on their forehead sayin’ “pleeeease shoot me!”

That was the case in that particular misty winter morning at the Paralia Katerini’s town (the coastal suburb of Katerini town) in northern Greece. Not much more to shoot due to the weather but these birds came out just right. I had to wait quite a bit till all four rocks where occupied by the birds (and take the right posture too) but eventually it all worked out OK. Too little pp and presto! The minimal is ready...

Uploaded it yesterday to flickr to post it in the "members’ exhibition December 2013" a kind of a gallery for our best photo of each month. Not sure if it’s my best photo of December as I shot quite many (most of which I have not even reviewed yet), but it’s quite different from what I usually shoot and I’m quite pleased by the result and that’s enough!

My 2014 "Italian Lakes" Calendar

Yes, it's this time of the year (I mean I'm ALWAYS late...) that I've finally managed to put together the 2014 edition of my Calendar.

For those that don't know the history behind these Calendars I'll say that from 2007 and on, I make a Calendar each year with some of the photos I shot during out summer holidays (usually somewhere around Europe)
This time we visited the area of the great northern Italian lakes so most photos are from there (though two of them are shot in Switzerland on some brief visits we've had there - remember that Laggo Maggiore and Lago di Lugano are shared between Italy and Switzerland)

Of course having completed it just now, I've missed the whole of January (making me consider to make one from February '14 to February '15 but then I thought that I'd screw up... more »

Of course having completed it just now, I've missed the whole of January (making me consider to make one from February '14 to February '15 but then I thought that I'd screw up the whole series so I've ended with this "normal" one - I suppose late is better than never...)

If you want to read a bit more about it and see this and my previous Calendars take a look here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/nikon_d90_d40_users_group_/discuss/72157640191409215/

This is the cover of the Calendar, I'll be posting all the 12 month photos here in the upcoming days.___

Monte Baldo, Italy

Some wonderful light and fast rolling clouds on the top of Monte Baldo in the provinces of Trentino and Verona, Italy

It's really easy to get up there, as long as you're willing to wait for endless hours in the huge queues to take the "Funivia Malcesine- Monte Baldo", at lest in the middle of the summer when I visited.

Forget all about it when you're on the top though...

This is the wonderful village of Varenna at the east coast of Lago di Como, Italy.

A most memorable place indeed!

Why flickr never has any interface problem at all??

Baia del Vento

This is the lovely Baia del Vento (bay of the wind) beach, on lake Garda, Italy, one of the best beaches on the lake to swim (of which I don't care too much being a Greek and spoilt by the Greek seas) but also one of the best to photograph (of which I care too much!)

We stayed at the nearby village of Puegnago for a week and I was lucky to discover this (very difficult to find) beach on the very first morning. Needless to say that I visited it every single morning as I saw there was lots of potential there.

Unfortunately on the first few days the weather was so good (for the rest of the tourists and bad for me) that every morning there was not a single bloody cloud on the sky! Thinking about it, I must have skipped one morning's outing as I woke up, saw the cloudless sky, thought "...hmmm, one of the same again" and went back to... more »

But on the afternoon of the fifth day there was a big (wonderful) summer storm over the lake that left many promises for a nice cloudy sunrise. So next morning I was there by 5.30 and at long last, there it was! In front of my eyes a very special scenery, just as I had imagined it! I shot many photos at various spots as the beach is quite large but I think this one in front of a villa's boathouse is my fave of the bunch.

Let the good times roll

Last Saturday I drove to my fave decaying jetty in Aspropyrgos.

Have not been there for almost a year and though many times when the weather seemed fine I wanted to go, real life prevented me from doing so.

It was already late when I decided to go, so the best light was rather over by the time I got there, but that did not prevent me from shooting a couple of decent ones. Seems that this one is my fave of the bunch.

Tymfristos early morning view

This is the view from Tymfristos mountain in central Greece, right above the town of Karpenisi, to the south-east, towards the Vardousia and Giona mountains (with  a mean distance of 45km).
These two, along with Tymfristos are three of the highest mountains in central Greece, each one close to 2.500m/8200ft.

I had been in the area for a corporate photo job, but despite my fatigue, my "artsy" self could not resist from getting up too early in case I'd shoot anything good. Not the fog I was hoping for, but at least this one didn't turn out bad...

Shot early one chilly November morning just a couple of km's away from my hotel.
