A sound theory indeed.

NASA’s Warp Drive Project: “Speeds” That Could Take a Spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in Two Weeks Even Though the System is 4.3 Light-Years Away, Video http://b4in.org/c4Hg

A  few months ago, physicist Harold White stunned the aeronautics world when he announced that he and his team at NASA had begun work on the development of a faster-than-light warp drive.

His proposed design, an ingenious re-imagining of an Alcubierre Drive, may eventually result in an engine that can transport a spacecraft to the nearest star in a matter of weeks — and all without violating

The idea came to White while he was considering a rather remarkable equation formulated by physicist Miguel Alcubierre. In his 1994 paper titled, “The Warp Drive: Hyper-Fast Travel Within General Relativity,”

Alcubierre suggested a mechanism by which space-time could be “warped” both in front of and behind a spacecraft.

Michio Kaku dubbed Alcubierre’s notion a “passport to the universe.” It takes advantage of a quirk in the cosmological code that allows for the expansion and contraction of space-time, and could allow for hyper-fast travel between interstellar destinations.

Essentially, the empty space behind a starship would be made to expand rapidly, pushing the craft in a forward direction — passengers would perceive it as movement despite the complete lack of acceleration.

White speculates that such a drive could result in “speeds” that could take a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in a mere two weeks — even though the system is 4.3 light-years away.

In terms of the engine’s mechanics, a spheroid object would be placed between two regions of space-time (one expanding and one contracting).

A “warp bubble” would then be generated that moves space-time around the object, effectively repositioning it — the end result being faster-than-light travel without the spheroid (or spacecraft) having to move with respect to its local frame of reference.

“Remember, nothing locally exceeds the speed of light, but space can expand and contract at any speed,

Stormtrooper #2: "No, but I hear it was bad. What did you hear?"
Stormtrooper #1: "I heard Lord Vader thought the jazz soloist was so bad he turned his head into a trumpet!"

I knew that fly looked a little suspicious.

Micro-Flyer That "Swims" in the air : Unlike most microflyers, this one is not inspired from aircraft or dragonflies or fruit flies. The microflyer created by researchers at New York University swims like a jellyfish though the air, rather than looking at bird or insect flight. While this is not practically for carrying humans, the flight is very stable for hovering and can be used in applications which will require this quality.

Article Extract: Lief Ristroph and Stephen Childress of New York University have taken an alternate route around evolution's highway: They've created a miniature flying machine that moves not like a bird or insect, but a jellyfish. Rather than flapping its four wings up and down, this micro-ornithopter's wings use a swimming motion, opening and closing its wings in order to ascend, descend, and hover.

Flying machines that mimic the flight of animals like bees or hummingbirds tend to flip upside-down, unless the build also includes “aerodynamic dampeners” like tails or sails; or a continuous control system for wing speed and motion. This flier's inward-outward wing motion allowed it to maintain stability without those add-ons.

This flyer is a prototype, emphasize the researchers, an early step toward practical micro-aircraft. "In the future," they write, "small-scale flapping-wing aircraft may be used in applications ranging from surveillance and reconnaissance missions to traffic and air quality monitoring."

Would you live in space?

The Bigelow inflatable space habitats : One company took an elegantly simple idea and ran with it. Today Bigelow Aerospace is not only on the cutting edge of space station habitat tech, they are actually looking at making modular and connectable habitats. Fascinating indeed. Earlier post here http://goo.gl/fQRLfD, and an even earlier post here : http://goo.gl/ZbjD2w

Article Extract: Bigelow Aerospace is now developing an expandable module for the International Space Station. And the company hopes to use the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport to deploy an independent, free-flying commercial space station.

Two months after signing a non-funded Space Act Agreement (SAA) with NASA, Bigelow Aerospace has made great progress toward identifying new ideas for private-public partnerships for human space exploration of the solar system, with discussions complementing NASA’s near- and long-term exploration goals with the private sector’s burgeoning development of exploration facilities for Earth orbit and beyond.

The engineering marvel that it is, the fact is that the International Space Station will not last forever. While most analyses concur that ISS will last until at least 2028 (from a structure standpoint, funding from the partner-nations notwithstanding), the time will come when NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace eXploration Agency), CSA (Canadian Space Agency), and RSA (Russian Federal Space Agency) will have to look for other avenues for continuous space experimentation.

It is a long post, but well worth a read. ENJOY!

Dark Matter : “What makes the universe so hard to comprehend is that there’s nothing to compare it with.” -Anonymous. Such is the theory of Dark matter. What is it? As Dr. Amanda Peet said "It's not visible, so we called it Dark ". There is a large amount of mass which is missing and unaccounted for - which has a gravitational effect on visible matter. It was first postulated by Jan Oort in 1932 to account for the orbital velocities of stars in the Milky Way and by Fritz Zwicky in 1933 to account for evidence of "missing mass" in the orbital velocities of galaxies in clusters.

Article Extract : Why Dark Matter : We start with a hot, dense, nearly uniform Universe that’s expanding, and it unequivocally follows the following steps: It expands and cools down, It forms the light elements, Matter starts to collapse under its own gravity, while radiation (like photons) push back against it, Neutral atoms form, leaving a snapshot of the Universe at that time (the CMB), and Gravity pulls the neutral matter together into stars and planets, galaxies, galaxy clusters and superclusters.

The big distinction, of course, is that radiation doesn’t push back against dark matter, but does against normal matter (i.e., protons, neutrons, and electrons). It means that when we look out at the temperature fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (above), we can figure out whether our Universe is full of normal matter, dark matter, or both, and how much of each of them. You want a Universe without dark matter, and — at the very least — you have to throw out General Relativity. (From Scienceblogs http://goo.gl/EA6X4t)

Recent UCLA physics symposium : "Because dark matter makes up the bulk of the mass of galaxies and is fundamental in the formation of galaxies and stars, it is essential to the origin of life in the universe and on Earth," Cline said. One search technique involves using the vast amount of dark matter in our galaxy. The NASA Fermi Satellite Telescope, an international collaboration involving NASA, the Goddard Space Flight Center and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, searches for gamma rays — very high-energy light particles — from this dark matter.

Much larger direct dark matter detectors are being planned in the U.S., Italy, Canada and China (including Xenon 3 Ton, LUX-ZEPLIN 7 Ton and DarkSide, which will weigh five tons). These larger detectors potentially could see a dark matter signal in the next few years, Cline said. (From the UCLA newsroom : http://goo.gl/YRz0Mu )

Elusive : Scientists have expressed increasing interest in the search for low-mass dark matter particles, with CDMS and three other experiments — DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST — all finding their data compatible with the existence of dark matter particles between 5 and 20 GeV. But such light dark-matter particles are hard to pin down. The lower the mass of the dark-matter particles, the less energy they leave in detectors, and the more likely it is that background noise will drown out any signals. ( From MIT : http://goo.gl/0a3SUc )

WIMPS : The presence of dark matter is inferred from its gravitational effects. Stars and gas clouds in galaxies and galaxies in clusters move faster than can be explained by the pull of visible matter alone. Light from distant objects may be distorted by the gravity of intervening dark material. The pattern of large-scale structures across the Universe is largely dictated by dark matter. In fact, about 85% of the Universe's mass is dark, accounting for about one-quarter of the total cosmic energy budget.  The main constituents are expected to be weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). These particles have masses a few tens to thousands of times that of the proton. WIMPs interact among themselves and with ordinary matter gravitationally and through the weak force, but not electromagnetically or through the strong nuclear force. To explain the way in which galaxies form and cluster, dark-matter particles should be relatively slow moving, or 'cold'. (From the Journal Nature : http://goo.gl/BdsQn0 )

A Simple explanation : Stars orbiting the centers of their galaxies travel so fast that they should be flung out into the cosmos, but they aren’t. Galaxies in clusters dance around one another, held in formation by something unseen. We study astronomical images, carefully accounting for the gravitational pull of everything we can see—stars, gas, dust, even black holes lit up by the matter they’re consuming—and it simply isn’t enough. There must be something else there, a ghostly cloud of invisible matter surrounding and enveloping each galaxy and cluster. At a loss as to what this invisible substance could be, we call it dark matter. What else do we know about dark matter? We know it doesn’t interact with electromagnetism in any significant way. It doesn’t absorb or emit light, and it doesn’t seem to experience friction or collisions with itself or other matter. It is probably passing through you right now, but without electromagnetic interactions, you won’t feel a thing. We know that it’s “cold,” in the sense that whatever makes it up is not moving at anything close to the speed of light. (Exactly how cold is still a matter of some debate—it could still be a little bit warm, or, perhaps, tepid.) We’re pretty sure dark matter is some kind of particle, but as far as we’ve seen, the only way dark matter particles interact with anything at all is through their gravity. Our theories (and our hopes!) depend on the possibility that dark matter can interact, if only rarely, via another kind of force: the weak force. (From Slate : http://goo.gl/f7uEAl )

The possibilities are...maybe, or no.

Making use of Carbon and CO2 : The amount of carbon emissions that are in the form of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere has got some scientists thinking creatively. Why not use it? While trees are natural Carbon sinks, it would be an elegant solution to capture the carbon and use it in manufacturing. It's not even tech which is very far away, in fact most of it is even being tested today and some of the technologies are in use....

Article Extract: Forget Storing Carbon. Why Not Capture It And Make It Into Something Useful? : Sooner rather than later, stopping the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will not be enough to stave off global climate change, and we'll need to begin pulling carbon out of the air. For many in the chemical and manufacturing industries, carbon dioxide, or other simple carbon-based chemicals, is a core raw material used for making everything from plastic to glue to antifreeze to fertilzier. Rather than liquifying it and dumping it underground—a process that brings problems of its own, including very high costs—some companies are working on using atmospheric carbon dioxide as the raw material for manufacturing.

Liquid Light, says New Scientist, has plans to make the base chemical, ethylene glycol, from carbon dioxide. Ethylene glycol is used to make polyester, plastic and Plexiglas. Other companies are working on using greenhouse gases to make other products.  (From  +Smithsonian Magazine http://goo.gl/6byuQh )

Putting carbon dioxide to good use : Every year, about 30 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide are pumped into the Earth’s atmosphere from power plants, cars and other industrial sources that rely on fossil fuels. Scientists want to mitigate carbon dioxide’s effects on global climate. MIT engineer Angela Belcher is now taking a new approach that would not only remove carbon dioxide from the environment, but also turn it into something useful: solid carbonates that could be used for building construction. (From +Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) http://goo.gl/iXIKsn)

Trees: The Carbon Storage Experts : We don't have to wait for high tech sequestration. We can increase carbon sequestration now by working with some experts. They're called trees, and they have almost 350 million years' experience in sequestering carbon. Trees, like other green plants, use photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into sugar, cellulose and other carbon-containing carbohydrates that they use for food and growth. Trees are unique in their ability to lock up large amounts of carbon in their wood, and continue to add carbon as they grow. Although forests do release some CO2 from natural processes such as decay and respiration, a healthy forest typically stores carbon at a greater rate than it releases carbon.
