"Meet the Press" is a Washington DC institution.  A place where the 'serious people of politics' come and discuss contemporary issues with other 'serious people' and educate the unwashed masses on what they are supposed to think about various events of the day.

Today on "Meet the Press" ( http://nbcnews.to/WE8Myx ), David Gregory followed Colin Powell discussing the racism of his political party with Haley Barbour.  The same Haley Barbour who ran the GOP and that a quick web search http://bit.ly/Ui437L http://bit.ly/Ui48bs shows has racist incidents of his own.  Especially a meet, greet, and picture with a group that Thurgood Marshall called the "uptown klan".

"Dog whistle politics usually refers to the use of certain code words or phrases that are designed to be understood by only a small section of the populace. Generallysp... more »

Bought a +netTALK Duo WiFi on 12/23 to port the house land-line. The access keys (userid/password) in the box didn't work. Tech support closed by the time I called. Closed on 12/24 and 12/25. Waited on the phone for 1.5 hours on 12/26 to get told my Duo is used. Weird IMHO since the security tape on the box was still there and unbroken when I bought the product and everything was still sealed in their plastic baggies in the box. But good news, they'll be able to fix it in 1 hour. They take down my phone number and email and will be contacting me with new credentials shortly. The nice lady on the phone told me that would be today.  A bit over 1.5 hours after getting off the phone with me, tech support goes home without calling or emailing me. I'm incredibly underwhelmed by their customer service.  I'm am not impressed at all with this company.  They are in desperate need of talentedpro... more »

From a friend of a friend via email:

http://www.theibcnetwork.org/donate/

I spent today participating in a fundraiser for Inflammatory Breast Cancer. The event was a scavenger hunt and I had no idea how much fun something like that could be. There were four to six members to a team

Everyone had identical pink shirts, well white shirts with pink writing on them, and we each got a list with forty items, or "tasks" to perform and be back in three hours. The tasks were things like "record your whole team singing the National Anthem to a store clerk" for 15 points, "Take a picture of the whole team in a bath tub', "Take a picture of the whole team in a porta potty", "Go to this pizza shop and count all their pepperonis on a pizza", "Find a car in Walmart's parking lot and write down it's license plate number",... more »

Thirteen Observations made by Lemony Snicket while watching Occupy Wall Street from a Discreet Distance

1. If you work hard, and become successful, it does not necessarily mean you are successful because you worked hard, just as if you are tall with long hair it doesn’t mean you would be a midget if you were bald.

2. “Fortune” is a word for having a lot of money and for having a lot of luck, but that does not mean the word has two definitions.

3. Money is like a child—rarely unaccompanied. When it disappears, look to those who were supposed to be keeping an eye on it while you were at the grocery store. You might also look for someone who has a lot of extra children sitting around, with long, suspicious explanations for how they got there.

4. People who say money doesn’t matter are like people who say cake doesn’t matter—it’s probablybecause they’ve... more »

A researcher in Norway proposes a thermite reaction brought down the Twin Towers on 9/11. The caveat is, no one needed to drill into structures and place thermite in the towers. The aluminum and water were there by design. Their interaction occurred due to circumstance.

I'm not an expert, so I cannot attest to the veracity of his theory. I can say it brought a smile to Occam and his razor. Some of the story appears below. Be sure to check out the video and the link for more information.

Christian Simensen thinks the Twin Towers were ultimately felled by a thermite reaction.

"If my theory is correct, tonnes of aluminium ran down through the towers, where the smelt came into contact with a few hundred litres of water," Christian Simensen, a scientist at SINTEF, an independent technology research institute based in Norway, said in a statement released... more »

One day, our kids grand-kids might be recording their dreams to share with others. I cannot even fathom the ramifications. I'm sure there will be a movie out using this premise as a social commentary in the near future. If they are forward thinking, it will be on DVD and fMRI. Here are the first two paragraphs from the linked article:

Imagine tapping into the mind of a coma patient, or watching one’s own dream on YouTube. With a cutting-edge blend of brain imaging and computer simulation, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, are bringing these futuristic scenarios within reach.

Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people’s dynamic visual experiences – in this case, watching Hollywood movie trailers.

"[T]he Argonne team's attack required no modification, reprogramming, or even knowledge, of the voting machine's proprietary source code. ... The team's video demonstrates how inserting the inexpensive electronic device into the voting machine can offer a "bad guy" virtually complete control over the machine. A cheap remote control unit can enable access to the voting machine from up to half a mile away. ... The video shows three different types of attack, each demonstrating how the intrusion developed by the team allows them to take complete control of the Diebold touch-screen voting machine. They were able to demonstrate a similar attack on a DRE system made by Sequoia Voting Systems as well."

Linus Torvalds words of wisdom:

“The first thing is thinking that you can throw things out there and ask people to help. That's not how it works. You make it public, and then you assume that you'll have to do all the work, and ask people to come up with suggestions of what you should do, not what they should do. Maybe they'll start helping eventually, but you should start off with the assumption that you're going to be the one maintaining it and ready to do all the work.”

“The other thing—and it's kind of related—that people seem to get wrong is to think that the code they write is what matters. No, even if you wrote 100% of the code, and even if you are the best programmer in the world and will never need any help with the project at all, the thing that really matters is the users of the code. The code itself is unimportant; the project is only as usefulas people... more »

Chuáng qián míng yuè guāng
Yí shì dì shàng shuāng.
Jŭ tóu wàng míng yuè,
Dī tóu sī gù xiāng.

I found several translations online, though I'm sure this is not an exhaustive compilation. The title has been translated as "Thoughts on a Still Night" and "Night Thoughts"

(direct translation word for word)

Bed before bright moon shine
Think be ground on frost
Raise head view bright moon
Lower head think home

(translated by by Christopher Evans)

Bright moonlight before my bed
Seems like frost upon the floor;
I raise my head and watch the moon,
Then lower it down and think of home.

Be sure to let us know how it turned out. Better yet, get a third person to video it. Then post it. Then we'll laugh at it. It's Friday, after all. We all need a good laugh.
