An unpublished image from a trip to Gran Canaria last November. Still processing images from 2012! I need to find a new balance between shooting and processing. Am I going to travel less? No way, I need to shoot more thoughtfully, and focus on worthwhile subjects.

Lavender Field
Actually it was not a lavender field. I found them growing in the flowerbed in a park I visited during the photo walk we had in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan last weekend. I touched it and enjoyed its fragrance for a while.

Willamette Falls
42 feet in a horseshoe with a crest length of approximately 1700 feet. Due to the industrialization of Oregon City, the falls have lost most of its natural appeal. The land on both sides of the river immediately adjacent to the falls harbors, among other facilities, a hydroelectric station, a paper mill and one of the oldest set of operational locks in the United States

Hanga Roa Cemetery, Easter Island: http://goo.gl/BmQmG
I used to hate them, but in the last decade I’ve become fond of cemeteries; they always remind me that life is short and to live my days well. The cemetery on Easter Island is on the edge of the town of Hanga Roa, and I’d walk past it at night taking sunset or star pictures at the Moai just beyond it. It’s a bit cheerier than most, being both colorful and lit by solar lights at night, with an outstanding view out to sea.

Grytviken is the largest settlement on South Georgia Island, and is the place where Ernest Shackleton organized the rescue of his men after the breakup of the Endurance and where he was later buried. Grytviken was also home to whaling operations on the island for many years and the rusting ships remain in the harbor.

Zaans Schanse is a great place to see working traditional windmills and is still an easy bus ride from Amsterdam. Visiting on a stormy day can be an unexpected blessing as the winds bring the mills into action. Strolling through the traditional houses at twilight can almost transport you to another era..

"Autumn Wonderland, New Zealand"
On the shore of Lake Wanaka in New Zealand's South Island I was lucky to have a day with amazing skies, just as the trees had become fully draped in their Autumn colours. A multi-shot panorama takes in the view....
(It'll be interesting to see how this is displayed in the new Google+ stream view; hopefully panoramas work well. If not you can click to view the image in its originally-posted size).
(Update: OK, at least for me, panoramas in the 3-column view of my stream are handled poorly by Google+. I'll be turning back on the single column view).

Rainbow in a Sun Ray
Last night I caught a sun ray rainbow, just before sunset, at Topaz Lake on the Nevada/California border.
You may have noticed that rainbows move as the sun moves. White light contains all of the colors of the rainbow, and the rainbows we see are simply that light separated out into various wavelengths, which we perceive as colors. This doesn't happen like it does with a prism, where the rainbow comes out the back side of the prism and that color-separated light is projected onto something. Instead, raindrops do separate the colors of light through refraction, but instead of it escaping out the back, that light is reflected back out of the raindrop at a 42 to 43 degree angle. So everywhere you see rainbow color is a raindrop, and if you draw lines back from that rain drop to yourself and to the light source, those lines meet in roughly a 43 degree angl... more »

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes and the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora, being distributed across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America and Asia. This kit fox was photographed on 5-5-2013 . It is one of four kits born to a pair of urban foxes, who make their home along the lakefront in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Always in our Hearts....
It is with great sadness that I report that passing of Yellowstone's Bull Elk #10 today. Some of my fondest early memories of Yellowstone were watching Bull Elk #10 and #6 spar near Mammoth Hot Springs. From what I've read, the splendid old gentleman was between 16-18 years old when he passed. Although he was no longer battling with other bulls, I often l saw him relaxing in the shade of the aspens above Mammoth or grazing near Wraith Falls. Even though he is no longer with us, his spirit will always be alive in Yellowstone, and I know one day we will meet again over the rainbow bridge.

"Circle of Life"
On Sunday morning, our friends found an elk carcass nestled in the Newton Creek Picnic Area along the North Fork. My husband, Steve and I, didn't see it when we passed the area an hour prior to sunrise. We were intent on doing some tracking in the fresh snow and were on a mission to arrive at a spot further to the west before dawn. After we found our tracks, we headed towards Newton Creek, and ran into our friends Amy and Elaine who had spotted the carcass in the picnic area. They also spotted some fresh grizzly tracks in the snow. The grizzly had recently been at the carcass, crossed the road and headed into Newton Creek Campground. None of us saw the bear, but I'm almost certain he was waving to Steve and I as we drove by in the dark earlier that morning.
With a carcass around, what's a wildlife photographer to do but wait to see what appears? A... more »

"Winter's Last Stand"
Like most of NW Wyoming, we had quite a blast of winter weather yesterday with up to 5 inches of fresh snow near Pahaska. Steve and I went out before dawn this morning with hopes of finding some animal tracks (and hopefully the animals who made them). Only a few miles from the house, we noticed the tracks of a lone wolf following the road for more than 6 miles. The tracks were frozen in the icy snow so the wolf had passed through the area during the evening before everything had frozen solid.
We didn't see any moose today, but saw hundreds of elk during our drive. With the fresh snow, the large elk herds have come down from the mountains to graze along the roadside where the snow is much less. As we approached Eagle Creek Campground, we saw this large bison making his way towards Yellowstone. I find bison to be extremely majestic animals and am... more »

"The New Generation"
Early in the morning of April 27th, we ran into three junior members of the Canyon Pack. We got a fleeting glimpse of the three wolves as they were running across Swan Flats towards Quadrant Peak. We didn't expect to see the wolves again, but a little over an hour later, they popped up across from Grizzly Lake Trailhead.
We watched as the three wolves (including 831F, the mangy yearling that people have been calling "No Pants", and a larger gray) frantically dug around a log buried in the snow. We couldn't tell what they were digging for, but in the past there has been a weasel den in this area, so that would be my best guess as to what they found so interesting. After about 15 minutes, the trio gave up and continued their journey towards Norris.
In this photo, 831F runs through the snow in pursuit of her siblings. She looks a... more »

The Lower Falls, as seen from Artist Point, tumbles over 300 feet into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This view was made famous in a painting by Thomas Moran as seen during his travels through the area as part of the Hayden Expedition in the late 1800s.

"His Majesty"
We went to Yellowstone yesterday with hopes of seeing the grizzly sow, Blaze and her cub, but early in the morning we were treated to a sighting of this beautiful boar known as "Snaggletooth" near Mud Volcano. We hadn't seen Snaggletooth since last year and had heard he was frequenting his favorite haunt. Since we couldn't find Blaze when we arrived, we decided to take a drive towards Mud Volcano to look for Snaggletooth and surprisingly, there he was. We were lucky enough to spend over an hour with this magnificent bear until he retreated away from the road.
