Herschel deep-space telescope shuts down : The deep-space telescope Herschel has taken its final bow, climaxing a successful four-year mission to observe the birth of stars and galaxies. The largest and most powerful infrared telescope in space, Herschel made over 35,000 scientific observations and amassed more than 25,000 hours of science data, says the European Space Agency (ESA).
Launched in May 2009, Herschel carried 2,300 litres of liquid helium coolant, which evaporated over time. Its expected lifetime had been 3.5 years. At 7.5 metres high and four metres wide, Herschel had a launch mass of 3.4 tonnes. It carried three cameras and spectrometers and a primary mirror 3.5 metres across -- able to collect almost 20 times more light than any previous infrared space telescope.

My only grouse is the shortage of Helium : The dirigible airship, the oddball aircraft of another era, is making a comeback. California-based Aeros Corporation has created a prototype of its new breed of variable buoyancy aircraft and expects the vehicle to be finished before the end of 2012. With its new cargo handling technology, minimum fuel consumption, vertical take-off and landing features and point to point delivery, the Aeroscraft platform promises to revolutionize airship technology.
The Aeroscraft ship uses a suite of new mechanical and aerospace technologies. It operates off a buoyancy management system which controls and adjusts the buoyancy of the vehicle, making it light or heavy for any stages of ground and flight operation. Automatic flight control systems give it equilibrium in all flight modes and allow it to adjust helium pressurized envelopes depending on the buoyancy... more »

Slice open the cookbook : Restaurants and gourmet food shops have an unprecedented number of digital marketing opportunities — so when ad agency Ogilvy was challenged with promoting the gourmet grocery store/cooking school Carulla, they cut through the electronic clutter by developing a clever, “interactive” cookbook.
It requires readers to practice their knife skills by slicing it open, page by page. With most cookbooks, the greatest risk is a paper cut or failed soufflé, but with Carulla’s DIY volume, a severed digit isn’t out of the question. In an effort to guide users, and avoid lawsuits, the design features perforations that gives the knife an easy point to start and rookie cooks a dotted line to follow.

You are more bacteria than you are you : We are practically walking petri dishes, rife with bacterial colonies from our skin to the deepest recesses of our guts. All the bacteria living inside you would fill a half-gallon jug; there are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells, according to Carolyn Bohach, a microbiologist at the University of Idaho (U.I.)
Starting in the mouth, nose or other orifices, these microbes travel through the esophagus, stomach and / or intestines—locations where most of them set up camp.
This is an extract from an article in NYT, as part of a Univ of Colorado research: As part of a new citizen-science initiative called the American Gut project, the lab sequenced my microbiome — that is, the genes not of “me,” exactly, but of the several hundred microbial species with whom I share this body. These bacteria, which number around ... more »

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb : No, seriously, how to have a better googleplus experience.
1. Add people who have similar interests.
2. Create original and interesting posts. Be thorough, write them well, have interesting news and information with verifiable sources. But mainly post what you find interesting. People with similar interests will automatically get attracted to you.
3. Engage with people, be respectful and interested.
4. Hope that it works :P
I do a 'take stock' post every once in a while. This is my attempt to share what I have learnt from the masters, namely +Jaana Nyström +Jens Graikowski +Mike Elgan & +Yonatan Zunger on how to post.
I learn a lot from everyone here, but this is meant as my experience in this limited area. Thanks everyone for the help and support!
