I thoroughly enjoy shooting in Paris. It's a great city with great light, colour, people, architecture and style. It's essentially a street photographers dream city, apart from the draconian laws surrounding photography in public spaces. Luckily those laws have not affected me as of yet, so on I go...

Now that the clocks have been brought forward and we it stays lighter for longer, I've been shooting more colour film, and doing so has got me searching for a cheap alternative to Kodak Portra 400 at ISO 400.
First up on the list of films to try is the Fuji Superia 400 X-TRA. I've used this film before in the Nikon FM3A and have got fairly good results. The colours are nice and vibrant but indoor shots sometimes suffer from over saturation of skintones when compared to Portra.
Anyway I do like this film and personally I prefer the over saturated colours to Portra. My only problem with it is the slightly larger grain size and lack of exposure latitude when compared to Portra 400. Although I haven't tried (maybe I will in my next roll), I doubt you'd be able to expose Superia 400 at ISO 800 and get acceptable results.

What a pleasant Easter Break, and I certainly needed in order to recharge my batteries.

Today's post is a bitter-sweet one, as It's the end of my Neopan 1600 photos, but the start of my HP5 Plus. Luckily when HP5 is pushed to ISO 1600 and processes in Microphen, it produces a look consistent with Neopan 1600.

It's been a while since I posted some colour photos shot on digital, and it's mainly due to how light, convenient and discreet my little Ricoh is. The OM-D E-M5 which is also a light, convenient and fairly discreet mirrorless camera isn't getting much use.

I don't know if you regular viewers will notice a theme start to emerge from the next few posts or not, but I've started to shoot at night with flash. Nothing new about that really... but I've been doing it while drinking.
I always say that my photography is better when I'm drunk, well I'm starting to think it really is. Even if the photos aren't better (that's subjective after all), it's certainly more fun.

This is my 200th post since I started this blog, in October 2011. Since then I've posted hundreds of photos (maybe even, in the 4 figures).
I started out the blog so I push myself to shoot as often as I could in order to have sufficient content for my posts. I then slowly realised that I was forcing myself too much and was ending up with dozens of photos per post which were not even noteworthy, let alone any good. This led me to limit the number of photos and the frequency of post which I think has subsequently increased the quality of photos which I'm posting. Let me know if you agree...

I know how everyone loves Kodak Portra... and that's why I keep posting these. However I'm coming to the end of my Portra shots and have no more rolls to shoot or develop. At a minimum price of £6 per roll and a development of price of £3.99 it's not a cheap way to shoot. If anyone wants to donate any unused rolls of Kodak Portra to a good cause, then let me know and I'd be delighted to take your rolls in to care :-P

Alternatively if anyone knows of a cheap place in London that sells Kodak Portra 400 135 film 36 exp please let me know.

I just came back home from a quick trip to Brick Lane, and I met Charlie Abbiss from Film's Not Dead. A cool community website and resource for people who are in to or want to try out film photography. They had Kentmere 400 at £3.50 which is pretty cheap, if anyone is thinking of stocking up on black & white film.

Charlie's a cool guy and his work is great; black & white street with an emphasis on shadows and light, so check out his site if you've got a few minutes spare.

Happy new year people. 2012 was a good year for me in many respects however I hope 2013 will be better.
I hope it's also a year which I capture better photos than I have in the past.

Here are some highlights from the past year from both my digital and film collection. It's a very quick selection without much thought behind it.

During a recent work trip to Miami, Florida, I was able to spend a well deserved couple of days shooting the streets of Miami Beach (and of course the beaches). It was a real treat going from 5°C in London to 27°C in Miami. The streets, beaches, bars, and shopping malls were a feast for the eyes (or lens as the case may be).

From a photography point of view though, my problem was that I'd never shot the streets in the States before and was weary of waving a camera in someones face, especially on the beach. It normally takes me a few days to get acclimatised to shooting in a new city or country, unfortunately those were a few days that I did not have. Nevertheless I did try and shoot as much as possible and was exhausted by the end of my trip (Who was it that said a street photographers most important toll apart from his camera are his shoes?).
