Black Bear (Ursus americanus) - Wildlife Wednesday

I have not really photographed Black Bears (Ursus americanus) before - last year was the first time I'd seen one. Since then I've seen maybe a dozen, and this is certainly the largest. A friend of mine insists this is a Grizzly, but I just don't see the necessary characteristics to make that determination (I'm new at these species though). I do not know if this is a "large" black bear, but it certainly was not skinny like some of the ones I came across last year.  This one was wolfing down dandelion flowers along the side of the Crowsnest Highway in Manning Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada.  I was well across a 4 lane highway with my 70-200 + 1.4x Extender (I was 53 feet away for this shot).  This felt sufficiently distant enough to get a decent photo and to not disturb the bear.

Eureka Falls in the Skagit Valley of British Columbia - Waterfall Wednesday

I photographed quite a few waterfalls on my recent trip to the Okanagan, but the first one I want to share is actually much closer to home.  On my way back last week I stopped at Eureka Falls near Hope, BC.  Often this falls has low water levels (or too high) but I think the conditions were just about right last week.  I finally was able to make some wide angle shots of this falls without much in the way of foliage in the way.  Silverhope creek is in the foreground, and was at such a violent rate of flow I was not going to get at all close to it!

Mountain Monday Recap

Thanks again to everyone who participated in this week's #mountainmonday! The new G+ has brought some apparent #hashtag changes... and I had a lot of seemingly irrelevant stuff show up in my searches, so I hope I found most of the posts.  If your post doesn't have a +1 on it, I didn't get to see it.  :(  Here are a few of the posts from yesterday:

Kangaroo Ridge at Washington Pass - Mountain Monday

Trying out this new G+ look and feel with a vertical image from just outside North Cascades National Park in Washington State, USA.  Looks like vertical looks pretty good on G+ now.  :)

Now this could just be a slow day, but I am having some troubles finding Mountain Monday posts with the hastag search.  A lot of the posts that result are for Landscape Photography and other themes, and never tag or reference Mountain Monday at all.  I'm not sure if I'm not adapting to the new search layout or the new search has some teething problems.  Either way, I am attempting to find your posts, and +mentioning me or the +Mountain Monday page will (as always) help ensure I find them.

Silver Lake Provincial Park - Mountain Monday

Today I am planning a trip to British Columbia's Okanagan region.  Hoping there are still a few wildflowers around not fried by the late summer like weather we had last week.  One place I plan to stop at on the way home is Silver Lake Provincial Park in Hope, British Columbia, Canada.  There won't be the fall colours pictured here, but I do hope to finally see the park with lots of new spring growth.

Table Mountain for Way Wednesday

I haven't participated in Way Wednesday for a few months so I thought I would share this photo today.  This is Table Mountain in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest photographed from the Bagley Lakes trail (which you can see in the foreground). I am looking forward to the snow melting up there so I can hike this trail again and investigate even more new (for me) places.

Today is #mountainmonday!  A lot of great posts already today, and I look forward to seeing the posts this evening.  Sometimes things come together in that a lot of people wind up posting the same mountain or area.  This happens frequently with Yosemite National Park, and often with Mount Shuksan in Washington State.  This week I've seen a lot of photos of Mount Baker, which is also in Washington State.  So... I thought I'd reshare an image I think I last shared in mid 2011 - a panorama of Mount Baker.  This was made from Artist Point in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest quite a few years ago and was a case where I did a lot of things wrong.  I didn't use a tripod, I didn't quite give enough image overlap, and I blew the exposure on a few frames.  I learned a lot from the subsequent post processing wrestling match!  Still, this is a panorama I find pleasing, and wasone of the ... more »

Clayton Beach at Larrabee State Park

The rocky, sandstone shores of Larrabee State Park just south of Bellingham, Washington are not like the ones I've spent more time on around Vancouver.  It is much nicer to walk on the sandstone - its like built in grip for your shoes!  The water has also eroded the rock surfaces into all sorts of interesting shapes and patterns which makes choosing a composition a bit difficult - there are so many great possibilities!

I wrote a bit more about my trip to Larrabee State Park on my blog post:  http://photoblog.mrussellphotography.com/5834/larrabee-state-park-clayton-beach-sunset/

Thanks to +Sandra Parlow for helping with some post processing techniques and in her words "to make your face presentable enough to be shown in public".  Okay, she didn't say that (out loud).  :-P

Oh and Google if you are going to harass me EVERY TIME I POST a landscape or nature photo by looking for a face to tag... you couldn't actually find one in this photo?  Annoying.

Mount Cheam - Mountain Monday

This is a panorama of Mount Cheam, a familiar sight to anyone living or often traveling through the Fraser Valley of British Columbia.  I made this photo by the banks of the Fraser River in Agassiz just after sunset. The time right after sunset is often referred to as “Blue hour” and you can see why. I often like to photograph city buildings in Vancouver at this time as you can still see the outlines of the buildings against the sky (unlike when the sky is darker). I find this is also a great time to photograph mountains – so it is worth hanging around after any potential sunset light or alpenglow has faded. Always wait until the light is completely gone!

This is Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park just outside of Vernon. This photo was taken last Spring and is one of the destinations I plan on returning to this year.  This photo was a bit more exciting to make than I'd planned on - which you can read about in my blog post:http://p... more »

Mount Cheam in The Fraser Valley of BC - for Mountain Monday

Mount Cheam is a familiar sight for anyone who lives in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada.  I photographed Cheam (left) and nearby Mount Archibald (right) early in January after a fresh dusting of snow.  The alpenglow and sunset I was anticipating never materialized, but I did get some nice blues from the sky after sunset regardless.  Sometimes I prefer a more subtle sunset like this anyway.  :)

I am sharing this photo for Mountain Monday today not because its a great photo, but because I made it when I was 7!  This is a mountain scene somewhere in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, most likely an area known as Ryder Lake.  I made this photo with a Kodak Instamatic 304 - so this is the way the prints came out - it is not a square crop.

English Bay Rainstorm

Not an unfamiliar sight for those on the West Coast I'm sure, but this is a rainstorm heading towards Vancouver.  I was finishing up photographing Fall foliage at Stanley Park in #vancouver, #britishcolumbia and stopped on the way out of the park to photograph this storm.  This is English Bay to the West of downtown Vancouver, with the ubiquitous tankers achored, waiting to load and offload their cargo in the port.  I'd been lucky all day in that I was not rained on much, but about 30 seconds after this photo was taken the deluge began.  I had considered breaking out the ND filter, but the heavy rain bouncing off the pavement and the hood of my car persuaded me to stay dry instead.  You can see more of my photography from the Vancouver area in my Vancouver Coast & Mountains Gallery : http://goo.gl/njSRB

This Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) was like many of the owls sitting on the driftwood at Boundary Bay - it had to occasionally keep a wary eye on a passing hawk or Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus).  The Harriers especially seemed to like to dive bomb the owls - though I don't know if they ever make contact.  One flew over the head of this owl and it kept an eye on it as it passed.  Yet another reason for the photographers in the area to stay on the trails and not harass the owls just for a photograph - they already have enough to keep an eye on while attempting to rest. I made this photo in early 2012 near Boundary Bay in Delta, British Columbia, Canada.  I've heard reports of more bad behaviour from photographers and birders this winter, enough to keep me away, unfortunately.

A few weeks ago, I asked for input on the Canon 6D for landscape photographers. Well, I bought one and used it for two weeks in Death Valley. Summary: I am a fan! If you want to read more, you can check out the link below.

Mount Shuksan - Mountain Monday

I've shared this photograph before, and yes it is an "iconic" and often photographed location in the Pacific Northwest.  I have been reprocessing some of my older images with new techniques I have learned.  I didn't even know how to do a mask when I originally processed this image, which to me now looks over saturated. I think this interpretation of this scene is more realistic.

Make a New Google+ Cover Photo w Photoshop
If you havent noticed yet, +Sara McKinley recently announced an update to Google+ profiles (link: http://bit.ly/WUbLtN ), and one of the changes was a brand new cover photo option. I used this space on my profile to show a collage of images, & now that needed to be updated. As i made my new cover page, I figured Id make a tutorial on how I made a collage for my page using #photoshop  . You'll go through action control, batching, presets, and alignment, making Photoshop do your heavy lifting. Pass it on!

Whoah whats with the new G+ photo header?  Thats gigantic! Guess I have to give up my old school scrapbook setup now!  Not a big fan of the round profile pic though.  Perhaps it will grow on me.

Chilliwack Lake for Mountain Monday

This is Chilliwack Lake at Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park in the Chilliwack River Valley of British Columbia, Canada.  The large peaks in the background are Mount Redoubt and Nodoubt Peak in North Cascades National Park in Washington State, USA. I've been going through some of my better, older images and reprocessing them for a variety of reasons.  For some, I just know a bit more of what I want out of the image now, and for others, I really do not like the processing I applied even just a few years ago.  So I am altering a few of my images to be a bit more "realistic" - at least in my current frame of mind.

The "Queen of Surrey Ferry" in Howe Sound - Friday Getaway

The Ferry Queen of Surrey sails towards Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  This was one of the few photos I made that were at all sharp - was tough shooting a moving target in a stiff wind on the vibrating deck of an accelerating ferry.   Do I get any extra points as this photo was actually made on a Friday and I was leaving for a short getaway?  ;-)

Spawning Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) for Wildlife Wednesday

This is one of the times where I've had an image in my head and been able to actually find it in the field.  We've all seen great underwater spawning salmon photos.  One comes to the quick realization that while walking by a stream with salmon in it - this isn't the sort of photograph you will be able to make unless you have special equipment (and likely a permit) to get into the water yourself.  So after one season of disappointing results, I'd though about this idea of having one or more salmon showing their backs through the water hopefully with some nice coloured light reflecting on the water around them. I was quite pleased with the results of this particular photograph as it worked out more or less how I'd intended ahead of time.  You never know what conditions you are going to find onlocati... more »
