The new Android Studio is brilliant. It's so easy to get it up and running, and the templates are much improved. Also, not sure when this got added, but you can now choose to use host graphics to emulate OpenGLES, so the emulator is actually usable on 4.0+
Now I just need to find a good project to build in Android and actually learn my way around Android's APIs, and I bet I could build some cool shit with these awesome tools. Love how dead simple it is to get a basic project started, without spending an hour or more just getting Hello World and a title bar to pop up.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I loved that movie. The first movie was good and all but I wouldn't go as far as to say I loved it. The new one though? Brilliant!
Also, glad it didn't go with as much bloom as the first one. The whole movie just felt elegant. Still not a trekky though.

Some other /commands that +Reuben Lifshay found in the source code:
/bikeshed (changes everyone's chat background to a random color)
/pitchforks (sends an angry mob)
/shydino (dinosaur hiding behind a house)
/kc (does nothing currently, it's a mystery what it's mapped for)
/ponies (see previous post)
/ponystream (see previous post)
Still upset about /me being deprecated though...

So not only does the desktop version of Hangouts have a /ponies command (which sends a random animated pony to trot across the chat), but also a /ponystream command that causes an endless waterfall of trotting ponies to cross your chat (though it appears as a never sent message to whoever you send it to).
Unfortunately, as fun as these commands are, I'm kinda upset they got rid of the /me command. That's the best frickin' command ever invented. Also, I hope they make commands work on mobile at some point.

Just got into the Google Maps Preview. It's so awesome! The new Earth view is amazing! Directions don't seem to work currently (keeps saying cannot calculate, no matter what I try to get directions from or to), but so far it's pretty amazing. It's fast and butter smooth.

Made this as a way to show what my code was doing behind the scenes on a recent project, and thought it was useful enough to share. Basically, you use it like you would console.log(), but use html.log() instead. Rewrote it here to not require jQuery. Might post a jQuery version soon, since it's a bit more neat.

Looks like the myth that H264 is "more efficient" than WebM might be busted. I'd like to see this test on a more mainstream device with definite onboard H264 acceleration, like the Galaxy Nexus. I'm not sure if this N90 tablet had that.

Finally watched the Person of Interest finale.
Holy. Fuck.
This show is just crazy. It started out as a good show, and now it's beyond amazing. Well played. I did not see that coming at all. Can't wait for season 3 now.

This is a fascinating read on the internal dynamics holding back improvement of the NT kernel, purportedly by someone who actually works on it.
What I find most interesting about it is the fact that seemingly rational decisions and structures (e.g. everyone, focus on your own job; planning based on felt business need) can lead to long-term institutional rot for non-obvious reasons.

"Ellen Hansen Sandseter, a Norwegian researcher at Queen Maud University in Norway, has found in her research that the relaxed approach to risk-taking and safety actually keeps our children safer by honing their judgment about what they're capable of. Children are drawn to the things we parents fear: high places, water, wandering far away, dangerous sharp tools. Our instinct is to keep them safe by childproofing their lives. But "the most important safety protection you can give a child," Sandseter explained when we talked, "is to let them take... risks."

Gotta say, I'm enjoying my 3DS XL. The 3D screen is actually kinda cool, although it sometimes gets in the way of certain games, since I don't like to sit still for some of them. The 3D slider makes that a non-issue though.
Games look awesome on it. Sure, it's low res compared to say my Nexus 4, but the graphics detail is amazing (some of the games look better than they did on the Gamecube). All in all, I just love playing games on it. Ocarina of TIme 3D is probably the best incarnation I've seen, the graphics got just enough of an update to look good, without really messing with the visual feel too much.

So Left 4 Dead 2 Beta for Linux is working on my machine. Unfortunately, it's a bit choppy when large numbers of infected start attacking, to the point that it's a bit distracting. Unfortunately, changing graphics settings to completely minimal or completely maximum carries very little difference, so I can't optimize it much.
I noticed the same choppiness in Portal for Linux, although it actually just straight up crashed after going through the first portal, so it's definitely more broken.
Oh, also, doesn't L4D2 normally allow you to carry a weapon and a pistol? Because picking up melee weapons replaces my pistol, and I could have sworn the Windows version doesn't do that.

S-Off vs Unlocked, and flashing firmware
Earlier this week, I met with some of the folks on the HTCDev team in Seattle to talk about supporting +CyanogenMod and root users/developers.
We had a chance to discuss some of the misperceptions of both sides, and the conversation was enlightening. On the ROM community's end, there seems to be a misunderstanding of what "S-OFF" means; as there are a few issues being conflated here. So much so, that they recently released a S-OFF FAQ on their HTCDev portal about it:
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/about_unlock_process
There are two distinct concepts here:
* Being able to flash a custom ROM (boot, recovery, system)
* Being able to flash the black box partitions (bootloader, radio, trustzone, etc). This also enables carrier unlock via SuperCID.
The term "S-OFF" is specific to... more »

No problem
Seems like a stupid idea though. Why would you refuse to give me a security update if I put Busybox on my phone? And not provide me a reasonable route to even get back to a state where I could get said update? Thats pretty effed up, every Android developer I know roots their phone even if they stay on stock.

Lamar Smith, writer of SOPA, wants to strip away the peer review process from scientific funding
He also wants to favor research that creates jobs and isn't duplicating. Science is science BECAUSE it is duplicated and peer reviewed. Jobs should never be the purpose of research, just a side effect. How about instead of cutting peer reviewing, you give the NSF more than .2% of the national budget. Maybe.. just maybe.. that would create jobs.
This is why the US is falling behind in scientific research.

So just started replaying Halo 3: ODST today, and noticed something quite peculiar. Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin play two of the main characters, and Buck looks almost exactly like Nathan Fillion too! I don't think I had seen Firefly before playing the game the first time, so that's probably why I had no idea they were in it.

So thought i'd see if I could get a Gameboy Advance SP and LoZ: Minish Cap. A used SP isn't too bad, found one for 30 bucks with minor scratches. Minish Cap on the other hand... at least $150 on ebay, and I can't find anywhere else that is still selling it (possibly some GameStop out in the middle of nowhere I'm sure, but not that I could find it).
Now I'm super pissed that my parents sold all of my Zelda games. They're worth a shitton of money now, and that means I won't be able to actually get a playable copy anytime soon.
Wish old games weren't so hard to get a hold of. I could get an emulator version, but was really wanting the good old fashioned experience of playing on an SP.

Downgrading Gnome to 3.6 (forgot I had the PPA installed to get 3.6 when I was on Ubuntu 12.10, so I 'accidentally' got upgraded to 3.8). 3.8 is ok, but it's got some odd bugs, and it's got the dreaded memory leak too...
As far as I've seen there's no memory leak in 3.6, so hopefully things will be more stable. Also, shoutout to ppa-purge. Best tool ever when you like to live dangerously with unstable ppa's.

This week's Person of Interest was full of feels. It was really, really depressing. Good thing I decided to watch Big Bang Theory afterwards.
Also, with the machine taken out by a virus, I can only imagine the chaos that's about to erupt...
