Machine Learning used to reconstruct ancient languages
I think it is cool that Machine learning is being used in so many aspects of society!

"These days an absolutely staggering amount of research and development work goes into the very coarsely defined field of “machine learning.” Part of the reason why it’s so coarsely defined is because it borrows techniques from so many different fields. Many problems in machine learning can be phrased in different but equivalent ways. While they are often purely optimization problems, such techniques can be expressed in terms of statistical inference, have biological interpretations, or have a distinctly geometric and topological flavor. As a result, machine learning has come to be understood as a toolbox of techniques as opposed to a unified theory."

Elements : Experiments in Character Design by Kaycie D
“Elements - Experiments in Character Design” was Kaycie D's senior thesis project, which premiered at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design Senior Thesis Exhibition from April 2011 - May 2011 for 72 of the elements. In November of 2011, the remaining 40 elements were completed.
Kaycie D. grew up on the animated Disney movies of the 90's and the songs have been stuck in her head ever since. Though she is a born and bred Minnesotan, she received her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design with a major in Animation and a minor in Illustration. She specializes in character design and is working on several large serial projects. Aside from art, she likes puppies, Julie Andrews, and singing loudly and off-key in public places

Beautiful Glass sculptures of Killer Virus
The Unsettling Beauty of Lethal Viruses
The one of the left: Swine flu, by Luke Jerram.
The one on the right: Enterovirus 71, involved in hand, foot and mouth disease, by Luke Jerram
Few non-scientists would be able to distinguish the E. coli bacteria from the HIV virus under a microscope. Both are as different in their design as they are in their outwardly effects. Artist Luke Jerram, however, can describe in intricate detail the shapes of a slew of deadly viruses. He is intrigued by viruses, as a subject matter, because of their inherent irony. That is, something as virulent as SARS can actually, in its physical form, be quite delicate.
Clearly adept at scientific work—as an undergraduate, the Brit was offered a spot on a university engineering program—Jerram chose to pursue art instead. “Scie... more »

The Cosmos: Macro versus Micro
☼ The images on the left are night views of brightly lit metropolitan cities taken from the International Space Station. On the right, are fluorescent images of neurons. Like a neuron, the city seems to have a cell body, branching dendrites and a main axon like highway extending out.
☼ The ancient Greeks of the Neo-Platonic school of philosophy saw the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or sub-sub-atomic or even metaphysical-level). In their philosophy, Man is in the middle.
☼ Did you know that the word cosmos (Greek, κόσμος) means "order" and is the conceptual opposite of "chaos"? In Mandarin Chinese, cosmos and universe are both translated as 宇宙 yǔzhòu, which means "space-... more »

What is the most effective way to shake water off your body?
Thanks to some cool research, next time you hop out of the shower, you will be able to shake the water off your body with optimal efficiency.
They did analysis of the different ways dogs, cats, squirrels, rats, mice, bear,s lions, tigers, pandas, kangaroos and even pigs shake their fur to get dry.
_"the frequency of an animal's shake — i.e., the number of times it oscillates its body per second — is tuned to "(i) the animal's size and (ii) the properties of water, namely surface tension and density," in order to remove as much water as possible with minimal physical effort."
Spoiler: Applying their log-log relationship to humans, one learns that the optimum frequency to shake ourselves dry is 3Hz (= 3 osciallations per second.)

Scientists discover that the Sun is remarkably rounder than ever suspected!
"The peculiar fact that the sun is slightly too round to agree with our understanding of its rotation is also an important clue in a longstanding mystery," Kuhn said. "The fact that it is too round means that there are other forces at work making this round shape. We've probably misunderstood how the gas turbulence in the sun works, or how the sun organizes the magnetism that we can only see at the surface. Finding problems in our theories is always more exciting than not, since this is the only way we learn more."

1,000,000,000,000 Frames/Second Photography
How about that for a shutter speed, eh?
This is real rocket science: A camera that can film photons in flight. In doing this, it reaches towards the extreme outer edges of physics where weird relativistic effects take place.
Just as a comparison: If you would be filming a bullet flying through that bottle at 1,000,000,000,000 Frames/Second, you would have to watch a whole year to see it go through.
PS: Why they used a Coca Cola bottle to demonstrate this is beyond me, though! ;-)

And the gold medal for the 567 million km long jump goes to...
"Curiosity", from NASA's Mars Space Laboratory, in a world record time of
254 days, 16 hours, and 29 minutes.
Curiosity hit the Mars atmosphere at 21,000 km/h (13,000 mph), used a supersonic parachute to slow it down, and was then lowered down by a cable from a hovering rocket pack. It is twice as long and 5 times as heavy as Spirit or Opportunity, and the science lab portion is 15 times as heavy, and has 10 science instruments.
Pictured here is Curiosity at its moment of glory, showing high resolution images of its own shadow just after the "7 minutes of terror".

Personally, I am very thankful for those authors who make electronic versions of their books freely available. Definitely, the bulk of my knowledge in machine learning has not been through standard blogs, wikipedia, printed books, nor even the much publicised Stanford University video lectures on machine learning, but from publicly available books on statistics for machine learning.
Therefore, I am more than happy to tell people that there is another well written book that is available for free.

Facebook and the frenetic world that we made and choose to live in.
Today's Facebook IPO offers us a fascinating glimpse into the unbelievably fast-paced, frenetic and technology-driven world that we live in.
The fact that we have the technological capability to trade 82 millions shares in less than 30 seconds is mind-boggling. The fact that we choose to trade 82 milllion shares between each other in a 30-second global frenzy is also mind-boggling.

There are more than 65 technology startups in Silicon Valley that were created by Australians, and this number is growing rapidly. Many who feature in a major video series launching on smh.com.au on Monday are highly critical of both the government and the venture capital industry in Australia. They say Australia is asleep at the wheel and risks being left behind.
"They're moving to the US, they're getting a green card, and they're not coming back," says Matt Barrie.

I believe that most small businesses or startups succeed when a person begins spending time on something they think is really enjoyable or interesting. More often than not, this passion turns into intense focus and determination -- bordering on obsession. Then one day, simply because of the sheer number of hours of blood, sweat and tears that they have put into the work they love, the world realizes that they have achieved something really valuable and worthwhile, and rewards them for it.

How to become better at programming.
"When you’re learning something new like learning to code, some days you think you’re the next Zuckerberg, crushing documentation and cans of red bull with wild abandon. The next day you feel like you have a better chance of being the first sub-150 pound player in the NFL than being a good coder"
A simple-to-read commentary on how to improve your coding skills, which is a refreshingly different take to Malcolm Gladwell's "10,000 hours", and Jeff Atwood's "you just are". ~ kudos to Dan.

An anthropologist proposed a game to African tribe kids. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told them that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each others hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?
UBUNTU in the Xhosa culture means: "I am because we are"
