Elements : Experiments in Character Design by Kaycie D

“Elements - Experiments in Character Design” was Kaycie D's senior thesis project, which premiered at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design Senior Thesis Exhibition from April 2011 - May 2011 for 72 of the elements. In November of 2011, the remaining 40 elements were completed.

Kaycie D. grew up on the animated Disney movies of the 90's and the songs have been stuck in her head ever since. Though she is a born and bred Minnesotan, she received her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design with a major in Animation and a minor in Illustration. She specializes in character design and is working on several large serial projects. Aside from art, she likes puppies, Julie Andrews, and singing loudly and off-key in public places

What is the most effective way to shake water off your body?
Thanks to some cool research, next time you hop out of the shower, you will be able to shake the water off your body with optimal efficiency.

They did analysis of the different ways dogs, cats, squirrels, rats, mice, bear,s lions, tigers, pandas, kangaroos and even pigs shake their fur to get dry.

_"the frequency of an animal's shake — i.e., the number of times it oscillates its body per second — is tuned to "(i) the animal's size and (ii) the properties of water, namely surface tension and density," in order to remove as much water as possible with minimal physical effort."

Spoiler: Applying their log-log relationship to humans, one learns that the optimum frequency to shake ourselves dry is 3Hz (= 3 osciallations per second.)

"The peculiar fact that the sun is slightly too round to agree with our understanding of its rotation is also an important clue in a longstanding mystery," Kuhn said. How about that for a shutter speed, eh?

This is real rocket science: A camera that can film photons in flight. In doing this, it reaches towards the extreme outer edges of physics where weird relativistic effects take place.

Just as a comparison: If you would be filming a bullet flying through that bottle at 1,000,000,000,000 Frames/Second, you would have to watch a whole year to see it go through.

PS: Why they used a Coca Cola bottle to demonstrate this is beyond me, though! ;-)

"Curiosity", from NASA's Mars Space Laboratory, in a world record time of
254 days, 16 hours, and 29 minutes.

Curiosity hit the Mars atmosphere at 21,000 km/h (13,000 mph), used a supersonic parachute to slow it down, and was then lowered down by a cable from a hovering rocket pack. It is twice as long and 5 times as heavy as Spirit or Opportunity, and the science lab portion is 15 times as heavy, and has 10 science instruments.

Personally, I am very thankful for those authors who make electronic versions of their books freely available. Definitely, the bulk of my knowledge in machine learning has not been through standard blogs, wikipedia, printed books, nor even the much publicised Stanford University video lectures on machine learning, but from publicly available books on statistics for machine learning.

Therefore, I am more than happy to tell people that there is another well written book that is available for free.
