Stereotypes - We all hate them but they exist because they help the human mind make quick and oftentimes, erroneous, judgements. It's not possible for us to get rid of them completely. You can however teach your mind to quickly enhance / change the mental picture you have of someone as you get to know them more.

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, my favorite comedy duo, in a movie about Google! The trailer is more like a parody and is a bit overdone... Nevertheless, it's hilarious in it's own way.

Capitalism and Food - I was wondering about capitalism and how it can still be really effective in the long run. The food industry innovated over the last few years so that food became cheaper and yummier in the developed world. Unfortunately, calories/health weren't a factor in the equation to maximize profits and no one cared for a long time.
Now when a significant percentage of the population is overweight the stuff that sells is healthy food, diet supplements and diet plans. HFCS is no longer fashionable and Vitamin water, quinoa and paleo diets have become ubiquitous in the middle class. Capitalism will brilliantly adapt and everyone will be soon be fit again :)

The ‘anechoic chamber’ at Orfield Laboratories is the world's quietest room.
Silence, it seems, is not golden. When it's absolutely quiet you can hear your heart beat and your lungs breath. People orient themselves when walking by the sounds they hear. In the anechnoic chamber, you don't have any cues. You take away the perceptual cues that allow you to balance and manoeuvre. If you're in there for half an hour, you have to be in a chair!

People yell at me for being too much of a Google and an Apple fanatic. But, as I was watching today's episode of Mad Men, I saw a Google ad for Chrome and a Microsoft ad for Bing and it reminded me of a time when IE had 80+% of the browser market and Google Search had 80+% of the search market. Today, Google still has 80+% of the search market and Chrome is the rapidly growing browser with the bigest market share with IE is slowly dying. It reiterated for me, why I love Google so much! YAY! :)

Don't know whether to laugh or cry. The presidential inauguration barely got over and we are already talking 2016! The press is already taking about the nominees. Apparently, it's going to be a Clinton-Bush race.
No wonder that there is so little governing that actually happens. Political junkies, press and the public at large love to focus on the competition and the races and not pay attention to real reform. There is more talk about the next Dem or GOP nominees than about immigration reform :(

Our education system would be far more effective, if we taught kids how to think and learn, how and when to change their minds, avoid negative experience bias and build relationships of lasting value.

When u are able to think about the future rationally... Immortality becomes a foregone conclusion and population control and/or space exploration a priority. The only real question that remains is, when will we get there as humanity?

Even Grumpy Cat has come out in support of marriage equality!
But seriously, the best thing about social media is the social pressure it puts on narrow minded people and bigots. A minor majority rapidly becomes a major majority! Abe Lincoln may have had an easier time abolishing slavery if Facebook, Twitter and Plus were available then.
Whenever someone laughs at these platforms and claims that these are nothing but huge time sinks, laugh back and tell them that these platforms truly changed the world and bought democracy, equality and freedom to millions of people.
Let's get social and respect each other a tad bit more.....

G.O.P is at risk of being a permanent minority party. To make matters worse the people who scream the loudest are still very far to the right. They like making controversial statements that attracts audiences and ad dollars.
I really hope that they are able to rebrand themselves more as a libertarian party and change their stance on some social causes. It will be difficult because some of their staunchest supporters are defined by their holier-than-thou social stances. By letting go of their stance, they risk losing their identity and the moral high ground they think they are on.
But as the article describes there is no other way forward for the G.O.P, if they continue this way. Change is rapidly becoming the essence of survival.

Everyone wants to be happy but few understand what really makes them happy. Too often, people think that some material possession, standing in society or power will make them happy. Our brains are evolved and wired to believe that. A brain wired to strive for stuff was more likely to survive in pre-historic times than one that is at peace with itself.
However, we don't need to be wired that way anymore. There is no need to trick your brain into striving for things only to discover that we don't really want them and they don't make us all that happy.
When we realize that what bring true happiness is being at peace with who you are and interacting with people that bring you happiness, our priorities become more clear.

Aspire to be as wysiwyg - what you see is what you get - as possible.
That way you will have nothing to hide about your nature and your attitude towards people and situations. Everyone has opinions, feelings and reactions to situations, people and events. Some are fleeting and some are less temporary.
If you are genuine and express your thoughts clearly, people are more likely to trust you, like you and engage with you in a meaningful way

Sheryl Sandberg really nails it! :)
Women are discouraged to be outspoken, visible or loud. The minute a woman is tough, people rush to attack her. It's sad when other women attack women for being aggressive, opinionated and effective
"She blasted managers who unconsciously reflect stereotypes when they judge women's performance, saying: "She's great at her job but she's just not as well liked by her peers," or: "She's a bit aggressive."
Women who are extroverted are either labelled as a 'flirt' for being too friendly or too masculine, if they are assertive.

The idea that women can't be in combat roles is insane. Women are likely to be way better at fighting. Esp. at the guerrilla warfare that is commonplace today... Isn't it obvious or something?

Please go see Zero Dark Thirty.
The movie is a little slow and boring in the beginning but the second half is gripping, fast-paced and tense. They spend a lot of time on the torture scenes and it really makes you abhor and detest it. By torturing people we are really disrespecting the human spirit and in many ways torture is no different, if not worse than murder.
Really glad that torture is no longer american policy. This movie will definitely help in keeping it that way in the immediate future.

Life is a journey and it's up to you to choose your path. You can choose to scale a difficult mountain or walk through a beautiful garden. Your choices will determine your experiences and seldom is your imagination able to comprehend what you can see at the next turn.
In 2013, I hope everyone can let themselves go some more, not worry too much about sticking to the standard highways and discovers the hidden gems of nature.
Happy New Year!

Christmas
The gifts are wrapped in beautiful paper,
Such perfect bows made out of pretty pink ribbon!
Little surprises that make you exclaim with glee!
Oh! how nice of them to be so thoughtful and sweet.
The christmas carols that are so familiar can be heard
above the din of the children's laughter,
Images of santa, reindeer, snow and holiday lights,
The sweet smell of cinnamon and pine in the air
A last minute trip to the store coz the nutmeg was forgotten
Mixing some cocktails with orange marmalade and bourbon,
Remembering at the nick of time to take the pudding out of the oven,
Finding hidden cat emoticons on Google plus can be heaven
Fighting whether it makes sense to have panettone
or just sour dough and olive oil for hors d'oeuvres
and laughing at people for refusing to eat their ... more »

Merry Christmas to everyone. The holidays are a great time to do nothing and reflect on things.
Even as Christmas is becoming more and more about crowded shopping malls and unbridled consumerism, sharing a meal with friends and family can be immensely satisfying.
The religious symbols of Christmas help us be altruistic, create deeper bonds based on trust and help us defeat destructive emotions. Read more here - http://nyti.ms/YFgoXM

The abolition of slavery and the passing of the 13th amendment is covered in great detail in the movie Lincoln. The bill passes by 2 votes after a lot of arm-twisting, negotiation and persuasion from Lincoln and his cabinet.
In one scene, the opposition congress member tries to convince the house to not vote for the amendment by saying that if slavery were to be abolished, blacks will be able vote and that would lead us down a slippery path where one day, women would be allowed to vote!
A few progressive members are finally able to convince the house and pass the amendment and create history.
There are always two sides to all the issues we face today. There are many arguments to be made for and against but eventually there is only one reasonable postion, if we hope to have a peaceful and functioning society that is based on equal rights for all men and where personal ... more »

This dude seems to be unaware of the existence of the internet where he is going to be skewered for statements like this.
Probably doesn't get how retarded his suggestion sounds. Ya. Sure! let's get all the kids to go to armed buildings with scary looking security guards carrying guns. Let's make a conscious effort to ensure that guns will be on their minds. Teach them about weapons of destructions at such a tender age! #NRA

Every time there is a national tragedy we talk about gun control and regulation. Unfortunately, we go back to the status quo after the media attention dies down. Apparently the NRA is a very powerful lobby and everyone in Congress is afraid of them. It's a shame that not one of the senators who are pro guns showed up at 'Meet the Press' today. How can you have a position and not even show up to defend it and be a senator?!
There is no real reason for people to have assault weapons. The self-defense argument is really weak and you definitely don't need a semi-automatic weapon for that. Normal people shouldn't have access to such powerful weapons.
While I am not a fan of having too many laws, there is no reason not to ban automatic and semi-automatic weapons.

I used to be way more comfortable using a social media platform when there were few active users. The active users in my 'circles' interacted with me and I with them and most of the people I knew didn't bother to login.
Now the situation is very tense. It's 'code red' on FB for me! Everyone reads and forms all kinds of opinions but only a few of the readers interact. The silent majority is lurking, stalking, watching, judging and in some cases emulating. Your SM posts are not supposed to be taken seriously. You are simply thinking out loud and saying whatever comes to your mind. But no one in my age group seems to get that!

As the diversity increases in demographics, it is going to be impossible for the GOP to win if they don't don't change some of their fundamental principles and beliefs on abortion, gay rights and immigration.
They will soon have no choice but to change them. The challenge wil be do to this and still differentiate themselves from the democrats. It will also be difficult to change the minds of their base given that most GOPers are far more about 'belief systems' than they are about logical thinking.
