This is my other unexpected visitor. I thought a squirrel was messing around in the leaves that pile up in the side yard, but it was a fairly large box turtle!!
It was cruising around... I have a series of photos to try to automagical into a gif later on or tomorrow.
it ended up finding the door in the fence to the neighbor's yard...
(no, I didn't keep it! but I wanted to!)

Pileated woodpecker?
There have been a couple days in the last week where I found the suet feeder on the ground. Now, I may know why! I may have to place a size limit on this thing. ha ha. (I know, it is almost too late in the season for suet- but it is the last block...)
I've also seen a crow trying to get at it, so the woodpecker might not be to blame.
This is taken through the patio door glass, so it isn't perfect...

Super Science Circle - May 2013 Edition
Need more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle.
Please share this circle... for Science!
For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.
I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat.

a chickadee fledgling was out of the nest and somehow out in the street! it couldn't fly! my neighbor found it and was too scared to touch it. I scooped it up and put it on the grass under the birdhouse.
now, the cats are REALLY interested in the smell on my hands! the purring and excited noises are adorable!

Researchers identify networks of neurons in the brain that are disrupted in psychiatric disease
Studying the networks of connections in the brains of people affected by schizophrenia, bipolar disease or depression has allowed Dr. Peter Williamson, from Western University, to gain a better understanding of the biological basis of these important diseases. Dr. Williamson and colleagues have shown that different networks, found specifically in humans, are disrupted in different psychiatric diseases.

BRCA? What are those things?
Thanks to Angelina Jolie there has been much public discussion about hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. This is great. But I have also been seeing lots of (in my opinion) misinformation, confusion and bad advice regarding hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and #BRCA gene testing on the interwebs, most recently in the comments on an +Annika O'Brien post. So I thought I would try providing my answers to some of the more common questions and misconceptions I have run across.
tl;dr version: Talk to your doctor. 23andMe didn't test you. DTC and DIY aren't good alternatives. Get reliable info from your national cancer program.
1) What are BRCAs, do I have them and how are they related to breast cancer?
The US National Cancer Institute has a great fact sheet full of information without a lot of science lingo. Ma... more »

WIP wednesday
#1, Green grocery market bag
#2 cedar river flow shawlette
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cedar-river-flow-shawlette
market bag, easy, using up stash cotton. slight modification, extra solid rounds at bottom for catching small items.
Shawlette..... I like it enough, I guess, but it could use some changes. I would love a more dramatic center section. the current wavy lace is not really that wavy. also, I want more of a batwing shape overall, so some extra increases would be nice. I am trying to decide if I should finish it aw written, or just rip, and re-write my way...... I don't think I have enough yarn for the rewrite I want to make, so I guess I will keep going and take notes about what I want to change.

Now, it has new handlebars, and I need a comfier seat, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Scientists uncover molecular roots of cocaine addiction in the brain
Researchers at Johns Hopkins have unraveled the molecular foundations of cocaine's effects on the brain, and identified a compound that blocks cravings for the drug in cocaine-addicted mice. The compound, already proven safe for humans, is undergoing further animal testing in preparation for possible clinical trials in cocaine addicts, the researchers say.
Using mice, they found that cocaine induces NO to react with GAPDH so that GAPDH moves into the nucleus. At low doses of cocaine, the GAPDH in the nucleus will stimulate the neuron, but at higher doses it activates the cell's self-destruct pathway. "This explains why cocaine can have very different effects depending on the dosage," Xu says.
The team then did experiments to see whether CGP3466B, which blocks the reaction between NO... more »

I wrote this piece on #optimisticSF for +Lynda Williams for her blog Reality Skimming back in March. Because I never got notification of its publication, and I was caught up with my own stuff, I assumed it time-slipped and became as lost as Ameron Lor'Vrel,a prominent figure in +Lynda Williams's Okal Rel Saga (which I heartily recommend to fans of either #Dune or #TheCulture ).
The full blog post also contains an author bio and an excerpt from the rough cut of my upcoming novel, Without Bloodshed, but here's the piece on optimistic science fiction.

I don't claim to write optimistic SF for the same reasons I don't call myself a hacker or a feminist. I think "author of optimistic SF" is a title which must be bestowed upon me by others, rather than claimed. To do otherwise seems presumptuous.

A counter-intuitive manifestation of a zero-one law: according to computer models. everyone who was alive in 1000BCE is either an ancestor of everyone alive today, or else an ancestor of nobody alive today (including people in extremely remote and isolated communities).
This seems unbelievable until you realise that with each generation, anyone who is a descendant of the original person will propagate that property to slightly more than two people in the next generation on average. This birth-death process either extinguishes early on, or else ignites and grows exponentially until it covers most of the world's population after a couple dozen generations; and then all the isolated holdouts eventually get "infected" through one or two migrants. Geographical or cultural barriers can create bottlenecks for a few generations, but they don't last long (e... more »

Renowned papers –– This may be worth a read
"Recently we discovered (cond-mat/0212043) that the majority of scientific citations are copied from the lists of references used in other papers. Here we show that a model, in which a scientist picks three random papers, cites them, and also copies a quarter of their references accounts quantitatively for empirically observed citation distribution. Simple mathematical probability, not genius, can explain why some papers are cited a lot more than the other." –– Simkin and Roychowdhury
