Berlin Euro Photowalk 2012 - One year later...
(go through all the album to see the photos)
Some sweet memories from the most exciting photographic event of last year, Berlin Euro Photowalk 2012. An event organized by myself together with some wonderful people: +Athena Carey +Joel Tjintjelaar +Joerg Jung +Luca Cesari +Michael Diblicek and +Marc Koegel You'll see all of them in this album and many more from the participants. Some great photos were taken at this event, you've seen a lot of them winning awards at photography competition last year and some great friendships were created. I still think of all these people as good friends and it will stay like this forever. Miss you guys, wish I could turn time one year back.
PS.
Why I'm one year late in posting these photos? Oh well, you know me, I was waiting for the inspiration and it just came this afternoon... more »

Catharsis VI - Spellbound (Making Of) - How and why this series was born and how I approached the creation and processing of the photographs comprised in it. Tips about composition and light treatment, plus more about the concept of "(en)visionography", that I introduced a month ago, in my previous blog post where I define it and elaborate on what it means http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/ode-to-black-iii-extreme-black-making-of/. For my friends who speak Greek (en)visionograhy = οραματογραφία. For the lovers of Greeklish, (en)visionography = oramatography

(catharsis = purification, renewal, reborn of the soul and spirit through art)
Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece
Another lone tree in my winterscape series...
This project started two years ago. I wanted to photograph this place under snow for the last two winters, but as you probably know, I live in Greece and we do have a lot of sun and warm weather, but snow is a rarity. Plus, this place is quite far away from my home (some 450km to be exact) so it's not too easy to get there, meaning that I was relying quite a lot on luck, which I finally had this winter.
Everything I shot in this series has been shot in not more than a couple of hours and I still have a lot of images, even very different than the one in this series that I either processed or I will process because I like them all. I ... more »

Julia and the SmugMug Truck
Did I say we had fun at the +SmugMug in San Francisco last week? I should have said we had a LOT of fun to be precise and this is another proof. Me posing with a truck? What were the chances? :) Well, this is actually a very friendly truck and the photographer was great, so I just couldn't say no. Not to mention, it reminded me my modelling days back when I was a student and hadn't yet realized that I prefer being behind the camera rather than in front of it ...even if it's not that bad being in front of it either from time to time.
Photographer: The great +Michael Bonocore
Processing and Modelling: Julia and The SmugMug Truck (ummm, the truck was just modelling of course :)
And here's a behind the scenes, to prove that we had fun http://bit.ly/YktXx3

the heroes of +SmugMug
Three of the sweetest people of SmugMug, +Michael Bonocore +Katherine Cheng and +Ivan Makarov (in order in the image) from my visit to their HQ in San Francisco last week. What a great time we had, so glad to have met you guys (more photos to come)!! I had to leave this image in color so you can see what a cool workspace they have over there, full of great photos printed large and beautiful colors. Besides being very nice, the people at SmugMug are also excellent professionals and great at building, hosting and promoting photography sites, see mine for instance: http://www.juliaannagospodarou.com/ I'm super happy about it and was 100% built by the people of SmugMug. So, if you still don't know where to go, I totally recommend them. Thanks guys, you rock!!! :)

happy people
Rat Rock Island, San Francisco Bay, April 2013
Two of the nicest people I know, +Nathan Wirth and +Baber Afzal , with whom I had the chance and joy to spend a few days last week in San Francisco. The whole trip was an amazing experience that I will never forget and a lot of this experience was related to the people I met there. I'll post some more photos of these people as I get to process them. Here we were out shooting at Rat Rock Island in the Bay area, some LE coming up from there soon.
I was so happy to finally meet Nathan! He is an exceptional artist and a very kind soul, a generous person, very intelligent and with such an interesting and unique way of seeing the world. You can't get bored talking with Nathan, it's an experience from the first to the last moment. Besides that, he was also our lovely guide for the days we spent together and than... more »

ode to black III - extreme black
Willis Building, City of London - Architect Sir Norman Foster
We are what we create.
I have no doubt about it. We might be searching for a way of expression for long years and try a lot of things till we find it, we may be struggling with prejudice and limitations, with doubt and with being misunderstood, we may have to ignore common sense and go against the flow, we may have to figure out new ways of escaping what we call reason, what we call reality (what is reality anyway?) but in the end, what we will settle for can only be that very thing that expresses what we are completely, that helps us feel accomplished and free, that helps a restless soul find peace and allow us to stop and take a breath. If you look at this image you will see very much of what I am. I won't explain it, I don't want to limit your imagination. :) I will say ... more »

Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition
Super excited and proud that my “Like A Harp's Strings” series will be exhibited in London in the SWPA 2013 Winners Exhibitions as shortlisted finalist series in Architecture Professionals category!!! If you are there April 26 to May 12 go have a look. I don't know if I will make it as I will be flying back from San Francisco around the opening date and pretty difficult to travel again so soon, but you can tell me how it was.
I'm though anxiously awaiting the decision of the jury as for the first 3 places that will be probably announced on April 25. Your crossed fingers that day wouldn't hurt me at all! :)

Κάθαρσις | Catharsis VI – future memories
_(catharsis = purification, renewal, reborn of the soul and spirit through art)
Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece_
One thing I discovered over the past few months is that I like to work in series. I like to have a subject and follow it over a period of time, trying to understand it and make a story out of it. I like to take moments and put them together in a sequence, try to find the relationships among them, to see their evolution and the way the idea I had in the beginning of the project grows in time. I was wondering these days why I don't have any architectural image to share. And the answer was somehow surprising. First (and this I already knew), I don't have enough time to concentrate as much as I wanted on an architectural subject. An architectural subject needs (in my opinion) much more commitment than a lot other subje... more »

STOLEN CAMERA GEAR!
One of my biggest fears came into reality yesterday.
My camera bag, full of almost everything I own has been stolen. (except for a 200€ flashgun I accidentally left at home).
It all happened while I was having lunch, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in a small bar in the city center of Milan. My backpack was between my chair (which I never left) and a solid concrete wall; I still can’t believe they succeeded in taking that cumbersome 10+kg backpack without me even noticing.
Side note – just to give you a smile: I was drinking still water at the time.
It’s pretty hard to get insured if you’re not a professional here in Italy, so no chance of getting ANY money back.
Just below my personal information you will find a list of the stolen items; some are definitely uncommon like my infra red converted 5D MKII (their are n... more »

Κάθαρσις | Catharsis III – the path
(catharsis = purification, renewal, reborn of the soul and spirit through art)
Metsovo, Pindus Mountains, Greece
Today I'm in love !! :)
I hope you didn't forget me. :) I'm very little present at the moment, but that doesn't mean I don't like being here and I don't miss you all. It's just that I'm super busy at the moment and dealing with lots of things that need/demand my attention. Hope it's going to get better soon and that I'll have more time to come visit you all.
This is another image in my Catharsis series. Still winter images and no architecture from me and that's because I didn't have the time to seriously work on architecture. Working now on a couple of images, nothing ready yet, but they are coming soon.
Enjoy with chocolate!
