Last weekend I spent 4 days camping and backpacking in Cedar Mesa, Utah. I spent the whole time shooting with my new Fujifilm X100S camera and wrote up a "mini review" on my blog: http://www.mountainphotographer.com/cedar-mesa-with-fujifilm-x100s/

Nothing special, just one of only a few astro still shots I took during the trip. Taken right in front from my hotel at Iguazu. I really wish I had more time and the proper conditions to shoot the southern sky :-(

Frame from a timelapse I shot on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland about a week ago. The sky was on fire this night! Click the photo to enlarge, it looks much better that way.

"Counting Stars"
A self-portrait from last night at Johnson Lake, Banff National Park. Mount Rundle, almost ship-like from this angle, sails smooth waters under starry skies...
The month of May has brought many fantastic clear nights to the Canadian Rockies, and it is great to see many people out every night enjoying them.

Hey everyone! This shot is a pre-dawn photo from the Boneyard in South Carolina. These oak skeletons remain standing on the shoreline, and are covered by the sea at low tide. I feel that they are a compelling and dramatic scene and had to capture them before they collapsed into the ocean. Thanks for looking and I'd be happy if you checked out some of my other work... Please feel free to share this photo or add me!

Leaves are changing, nights are getting colder and the mountains are starting to get snow. Star gazing in the winter is a daunting thing being out in the cold, but it comes with the advantages of night beginning relatively early and the cold air holds less humidity which means a clearer view of the night sky through our atmosphere. This shot was taken a few miles in on a multi-mile cross country ski backpack trip. This spot more so than anywhere else had a big opening in the forest around me and I was shocked at how bright the moon light was on the snow around me. It was beautiful :-)
The forest was silent except for the occasional muffled "fhwump" of snow clumps falling off the tree branches. I was warm, even sweaty, from skiing with my backpack- so the break of taking the picture was not cold at all. The few times I checked my map to gauge the distance to camp- the moonlight was enough to... more »

Beautiful overlook above Bishop, CA. Anyone been up here? It was a little white knuckle crawling up the steep dirt road in the dark! This is from my +Land Rover USA trip a couple months back.
One thing I love to do is get out of town and find a spot away from the lights to look up at the stars. It was cool being up here for a couple hours looking down on the small car lights moving around. I get a real peace in these places.
Anyone notice photo comments are being streamed through the Gmail interface? Wow! I LOVE this feature. +Google+ Photos comments are so much easier to reply and interact with. Good job to the team coming up with these innovations and work throughs.
Alright- happy friday everyone!

Here's a shot that I was lucky enough to take last fall. Believe it or not, it's a single exposure taken in Cedar Key, Florida. This sailboat remains docked throughout the year; however when the tide is low, it becomes stuck in the sand. I timed this shot so that the Milky Way would be directly overhead at low tide, allowing for this surreal scene to emerge. Camera info is Canon 5d Mark ii, 17mm, f4.0, 30sec, ISO2500. Thanks for looking and feel free to share!!

How much editing does it take?
Sometimes it doesn't take any... I almost never post anything #sooc (straight out of the camera), because I wonder why would anyone post something that was not as good as it could be! (photo-journalism not withstanding)...
I am putting together slides for a presentation I am giving tomorrow at UCSF, and thought this was a good example of capturing a high dynamic range in the camera (with the use of filters). Whenever I do get around to processing this, it will be pretty sweet :)

For lava photography, the time around sunrise and sunset, extending to twilight is by far the best for photography. During that time, brightness differences between lava and land or sea are small enough that both can be properly exposed in a single exposure: there is enough ambient light that you can see details in the landscape, but it is dark enough for the lava to glow. For photographing the cascades of lava pouring into the ocean, such as this image, you will want a telephoto lens, since you won’t be able to get close.

Every now and then I come out with shots that amaze myself.. this is one of my favourite recent images, along with the red leaves and roots. This is part of my One of One series, there will only ever be a single print of this image plus my artist's proof version. This is very close to what came out of my camera, other than some minor contrast correction and cropping, this is straight from the camera!

Title: Softly the evening came with the sunset (inspired by a Longfellow verse)
My morning visit to the tulip fields last week didn't yield quite the light I'd hoped for. So a couple of nights ago, I made the trek back to Woodburn to see if sunset would be a little better. This is what I saw.
Not bad, eh?

I haven't posted here on G+ in quite some time....but thankfully I've been to a lot of places in the last few months. Here is a shot of the incredible Aurora Borealis in the sky above the bridge over Landbrotsvötn near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Iceland from early March.

I was mesmerized by this road going warp drive up into snow-capped mountains. But, let me tell you- it's eery setting up a camera in the middle of the road in the dark..

This is one of the more challenging images to shoot on the road trip photo shoot with the LR4 Rover. I didn't sleep much, since I was focusing on night photography, but the few hours I did get- I passed out in the back of the rig. I was amazed at how visible the outdoors are through all the windows, moon roofs and sun roof. So, around 4am one night, before passing out, I did my best to catch the view of the stars while looking up. Laying in the back is incredibly comfortable!

Perils being a Landscape Photographer
#landscapephotography
Landscape photography is exciting, but not always pleasant. Bad weather and dramatic photographs often go together. Last year when photographing in Iceland it rained and then it rained some more. The winds were 30-40mph at time and the ocean was violent. Here is a photo that gives you an idea of what it was like. And accidents can and do occur....sometimes. But the stories are always exciting like the article below:

And some tips on How to avoid them:

Venetian Mornings
I will admit, I'm more of a sunset guy. Sunrises, those are tough. When ever photographers invite me to their completely awesome plans to photograph this epic sunset, I politely decline by joking There's a reason why I moved to the west coast, it's all about sunsets here
But every once in a while I'll be jetlagged and wake up 5am, and when that happens I make sure to make the most of it and go see the glory that is a sunrise.
This, perhaps, was the best sunrise I've ever seen. Moments before this the night was dark, cloudy, wet and just generally miserable - but when the sun peaked over the horizon, the world was transported into a fantasifull, colorful faery tale.
Almost makes me want to reconsider my no-sunrise strategy..

ode to black III - extreme black
Willis Building, City of London - Architect Sir Norman Foster
We are what we create.
I have no doubt about it. We might be searching for a way of expression for long years and try a lot of things till we find it, we may be struggling with prejudice and limitations, with doubt and with being misunderstood, we may have to ignore common sense and go against the flow, we may have to figure out new ways of escaping what we call reason, what we call reality (what is reality anyway?) but in the end, what we will settle for can only be that very thing that expresses what we are completely, that helps us feel accomplished and free, that helps a restless soul find peace and allow us to stop and take a breath. If you look at this image you will see very much of what I am. I won't explain it, I don't want to limit your imagination. :) I will say ... more »

International Dark Sky Week
In 2001, “The First World Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness” reported two-thirds of the U.S. population and more than 50% of the European population had already lost the ability to see the Milky Way with the naked eye (http://bit.ly/16BdS69). The report also showed that 63% of the world population and 99% of the population of the European Union and the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) lived in regions where the night sky is brighter than the threshold for light-polluted status set by the International Astronomical Union.
In 1994, an earthquake knocked out the power in Los Angeles. Many residents called local emergency centers reporting a strange “giant, silvery cloud” in the dark sky. That giant, silvery cloud was the Milky Way, which many residents had just seen for the first time.
