This week was all about finding a single spot and shooting it at various times of the day with the same exact composition and studying the different types of light you can see during certain conditions and times.. This week I got off to a late start due to the weather being very uncooperative and rainy. This actually was ok with me since I was not too sure where I wanted to actually take my shots. One day at lunchtime (we needed a midday shot) the clouds were looking really good and I decided on a pond that is very close to home and work.  Despite all the ran I got lucky this weekend though and was able to set the alarm and actually get up at 4:30am each day to see what I could see as well as visit the same spot for sunset each day.The m... more »

Out with the Kids

A couple weeks ago on my way to a botanical garden in the Berkshires I drove by a spot that said "Wilderness Viewing" and had picnic tables. I stopped on the way back and after reading the description "1,642-foot summit of Squaw Peak" I knew I had to go back. That was today. Perfect clouds this afternoon.

There were plenty of maps when I was there in the information board. On thing to note. If you go to the right it is a steeper climb, but it is gorgeous (steams, falls, ferns and other greenery). The way down is best the other way. Less incline in the path and less damage to the knees/feet.

Second week done with +Sairam Sundaresan as my mentor and it has been a good week of applying what we learned in the first week, sticking to that lesson and adding a few more things to think about while I’m out with my camera. Getting images sharper by using my tripod (something I know I should do ;), Auto-bracketing as well as using live view to compose and set focus. Most of these things I’ve already done, but these combined with the underlying importance of correctly exposing from week one has really set things better for me as im slowing down a bit more and coming home with many more usable exposures.

This is my slightly late submission for this week. I knew I wanted to go a simple as possible with this one and I had a few ideas involving the invention of the wheel, fire and a few other simple machines. Last night after I lit some candles for some "us" time I realized I had my shot. A bit of a "screw", "wheel and axel" and "lever" action. Technology at it's finest ;-)

First week done with +Sairam Sundaresan as my mentor and I’ve been busy taking photos as much as I could with home life and work taking most of my time. The exposure triangle and histograms were the focus of week one and it really made me look at them in a different way. Usually in the past for me it was mostly a curious look at them. They can make pretty cool designs sometimes ;-) Now though I think I get it and realize that I should really expose as much to the right side of the histogram to get the greatest detail in a single exposure in camera without clipping the whites. Watching LTTL on Tuesday night, +Tyler Finklea typed into the chat box, "So, Robin, I'll bet you're not multi-tasking now!" referring to an earlier joke of how I like to edit during hangouts on air. You see, we were watching the ama-a-a-azing +Tanya Rochat and her incredible matte work. 

Six minutes later, I wrote back, "I'm doing a matte painting."

This is another view of the "micro storm" photo I shared a few months ago. I have never posted this view before, but I think it may show even better how unique this event really was. The Gulf of Mexico was like glass. Most of the sky was saturated blue.  The dark clouds above us suddenly opened up releasing this waterfall rain shower from the sky.
