Gary Matthews19,315Featured Engagers Forum!Social media at its best is a great conversation. The #FeaturedEngagersForum is a shared circle honoring people who, in my experience, practice and promote that art."Featured" means that if you’re in this circle, I'm inviting you to share a link to a favorite post of your own -- either recent or classic.Linking to a post is easy: Just click the small down-arrow at upper right. From the drop-down menu, choose “Link to post”: Copy the web address that pops up, and paste it into your comment. Please visit each other’s links. I certainly will! Please also visit each other’s profiles. I already have! All of you, in your own ways, have welcomed me to your engagement roundtable. My earnest hope is to return that favor by connecting you with others who will support you as you have supported me.This circle consists mostly of friends who interact with my non-circle posts in the form of plusses, comments, and reshares. Merely doing these things, however, won’t guarantee you a spot. Not doing them won't necessarily keep you out. To join this circle, you must join the conversation either by engaging directly, or by elevating the level of discourse in other ways. (For example, by sharing content that others might want to talk about.)==========================Some of my own recent posts:Make Your Own Animated GIFshttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/4DsG8Wtvs2UCircle Sharing on Ⓖⓞⓞⓖⓛⓔ  Ⓟⓛⓤⓢhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/+GaryMatthews/posts/bk8u3Rv8SzuIs Circle Sharing Really a Pyramid Scheme? Not if you manage shared circles my way! ≧◔◡◔≦ https://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/CV95E6zZGWrWhat Happens to Abandoned Facebook Photos? They become digital “unclaimed freight” -- and Facebook makes billionshttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/1UY88CnpfqbMy Favorite Superhero -- Lois Lane!https://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/gfpL8qx9cU6Introducing Full-Width Link ImagesGoogle Plus follows Facebook initiativehttps://plus.google.com/u/0/+GaryMatthews/posts/aRNSNuoE22AGoogle Comments Unleashedby new full-width link formathttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/C4gvwkHDnGmUse ℱᗩﬡᙅᎩ ℱOﬡ☂ᔕ and ϟ℘ℯ¢ḯαł ℭнαґα¢☂εґṧhttps://plus.google.com/108266630755932287913/posts/8GXkDfzzzsTA Knoxville Springtime!https://plus.google.com/u/0/+GaryMatthews/posts/XoDn4t5QM6vWhy I'm Changing My Namefrom "Gary L. Google's Cynical Manipulation of the Right To Be Forgotten
By removing articles from the British press they manipulate the debate. In what looks like an one two with the Guardian, BBC and other influential UK papers they pave the way for an outcry over censorship.

The court order said search engines will have to remove links to inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or excessive information which harms private individuals unnecessarily. A case-by-case assessment is needed considering the type of information in question, its sensitivity for the individual’s private life and the interest of the public in having access to that information.

What Google is doing now is cherry-picking requests which don't fulfill these criteria at all. A Guardian story about an error by a referee in 2010, a BBC blog critical about an American top manager. These are of coursen... more »

Israeli teenagers: Racist and proud of it
Ethnic hatred has become a basic element in the everyday life of Israeli youth, a forthcoming book finds.

“For me, personally, Arabs are something I can’t look at and can’t stand,” a 10th-grade girl from a high school in the central part of the country says in abominable Hebrew. “I am tremendously racist. I come from a racist home. If I get the chance in the army to shoot one of them, I won’t think twice. I’m ready to kill someone with my hands, and it’s an Arab. In my education I learned that … their education is to be terrorists, and there is no belief in them. I live in an area of Arabs, and every day I see these Ishmaelites, who pass by the [bus] station and whistle. I wish them death.”

The student’s comments appear in a chapter devoted to ethnicity and racism among youth from a forthcoming book, “Scenesfrom School Life” (in H... more »

The most crippled influential CPU ever is 35 years old: happy birthday 8088

There is no processor which had such a lasting influence on computing history.  When IBM decided to produce the personal computer, aptly named PC, they selected a cheap Intel CPU. The 8088 which was crippled as it couldn't address more than 1 MB.

This seemed wise,  not because 640KB was enough for everyone as +Bill Gates is incorrectly quoted, but because 16 bits PCB boards were expensive to manufacture and why waste money.

The 8088 was very difficult to program, slow at 4.77 MHz, couldn't properly address memory and had some major flaws. However the IBM XT was hugely popular so it became the benchmark to write code against.  The memory limitations were 'addressed' by a variety of clumsy and super smart solutions, still leaving the user with the need toconf... more »

Some fine choices again.....

The reasoning was probably that electing a Polish prime minister as European President would be a 'strong' signal to Rusland and supportive for the Eastern European countries. And it helps that nobody will understand him, makes it easier to ignore him in times of crisis until he found himself a translator.

Italian Federica Mogherini was chosen to head European foreign relations because well, uhm, her predecessor was a woman and that worked well so let's repeat that.

Nobody ever took notice of Lady Ashton, so a 41 year old girl, just six month on the job as foreign minister in Italy will be even better less noticeable.

After all, we can't have strong European leadership as the old boys heading the national governments wouldn't like that.

Europe one voice? Speaking in tongues like always!___

Obama's Management By Doubt: A First For American Presidents?
He admits he doesn't know what to do on Isis/IS, wants his staff to come up with plans and sends out Kerry to assemble yet another 'coalition of the willing'

Meanwhile James Foley seems to have been tortured by waterboarding and we're still waiting for the US senate report to admit the US did indeed torture by that same method.

This is how Ebola looks: helping victims at severe risks for meds
It's amazing what doctors and nurses do to treat and help cure people.

Dressed in protective and sweaty outfits as Ebola is very contagious, they can only work for an hour at a time before going through a sanitizing protocol which is extremely strict. And there is a reason for that as over 120 meds died while helping victims and more are ill.

Hidden behind their ski masks they try to make contact with the victims. No skin on skin contact can be allowed so they can only do so much.

It's great that we have people willing to do the most difficult and dangerous work imaginable: no ice buckets here but these doctors and nurses deserve so much more!

It's great that we have people willing to do the most difficult and dangerous work imaginable: no ice buckets here but these doctors and nurses deserve so much more!___

Making it a criminal offence for kids to play outside unsupervised?
Many Americans believe kids as old as 12 need adult supervision if they're going to play in public places, indoors or outside, according to a new poll that found a high number of people (82%) would support laws making it illegal to allow a 9-year-old to play unsupervised at the park.

63 percent said that 12 years old is too young to play without supervision.

I spent my whole youth playing unsupervised; what about you?

50 Shades of Gray? Not in the 2014 'Murica segregation reality

August 2014: The Return Of The BlueHeads?
On my recent posts I get an amazing amount of 'bluehead' commenters, otherwise known as people without any profile photo at all.

These profiles were quite common in 2011, but over time Google seemed to do a good job of getting people to set some sort of profile photo. Suddenly they seem to be back; not only on post soliciting new posters to respond, but on some deeper debates as well.

Is it just me or are the blueheads back in town?

P.S. and possibly related: the number of 'deleted comments due to spam' seems to have increased as well. I used to restore them all as it's never spam, but comments not accepted by Google for some reason (like relatively new accounts making multiple comments).

I live in an area of Arabs, and every day I see these Ishmaelites, who pass by the [bus] station and whistle. I wish them death.”

The student’s comments appear in a chapter devoted to ethnicity and racism among youth from a forthcoming book, “Scenes from School Life” (in Hebrew) by Idan Yaron and Yoram Harpaz. The book is based on anthropological observations made by Dr. Yaron, a sociologist, over the course of three years in a six-year, secular high school in the Israeli heartland – “the most average school we could find,” says Harpaz, a professor of education.

The book is nothing short of a page-turner, especially now, following the overt displays of racism and hatred of the Other that have been revealed in the country in the past month or so. Maybe “revealed” isn’t the right word, as it suggests surprise at the intensity of the phenomenon. But Yaron’s descriptions of what he saw at the school show that such hatred is a basic everyday element among youth, and a key component of their identity.

Yaron portrays the hatred without rose-colored glasses or any attempt to present it as a sign of social “unity.” What he observed is unfiltered hatred. One conclusion that arises from the text is how little the education system is able – or wants – to deal with the racism problem.

Better technology makes more and better jobs for horses humans?
The future where humans need not apply thanks to robot automation isn't as rosy as often predicted.

When mechanical muscle was replaced by automobiles, horses didn't get better jobs. A few of them did, some got demoted from real work to satisfying teenage girls an hour a week, but most of them were eaten.

Literally, the Western horse population declined enormously from it's peak around 1915 to present day numbers and ended up as horse meat.

So automation wasn't exactly good for our predecessors in the eat or be eaten game of progress, but would humans really fare better?

Literally, the Western horse population declined enormously from it's peak around 1915 to present day numbers and ended up as horse meat.

So automation wasn't exactly good for our predecessors in the eat or be eaten game of progress, but would humans really fare better?

Would we find meaningful new jobs like writing poems, performing arts or other areas momentarily excluded from the rise of the bots? Maybe some of us, but there isn't really place for let's say a 100 million more performers. If anything the trend goes the other way with 'global' artists. And one can wonder if talent is really that widespread....

Face it: automation will eat our jobs and nope, it won't create magical new highly paid occupations. Heck, it won't even create highly entertaining new ways of spending time without an income

Not only will mankind get unemployed, not only will we need to find a new way to distribute money for consumption when wages become scarce, but we will have to face up to what we actually want to do the whole day. Fishing, daytime television, social media junkies?

Oh, and in case you think your job can't be automated, think again. The higher your salary the larger the incentive to replace you with a smart cloud cluster...

Watch the video in case you doubt you'll be next

We need answers before we are dead horse meat. Any suggestions?

Great video to illustrate the standard format of news items. An irrelevant incident, a reporter on the scene recapping what we already know,  a talking 'expert' adding more bull and off course viewers comments to make it relevant.

The bad news is that the formula works as viewers love it: check the video

Ok, this is the best (and, sadly, most accurate) thing ever.

An eye for an eye, a bombing for a beheading
this evening a cruel video circulated of a live execution of James Foley, a US photo journalist who got beheaded by IS (Islamic State). It rightly upset everyone who was unlucky enough to see the YouTube video.

Google removed the video, but not the lasting image on my mind, nor the shocking message. I advise people not to google on it as it's gruesome and your imagination is probably good enough to imagine a clumsy beheading.

However that's not what IS wanted to tell the world. The real world message was that they didn't accept the bombings by the US killing tens or hundreds of their soldiers. The bombs rained from high on the skies as well as by invisible drones.

The Islamic State didn't have a response so they switched strategy: blackmail is the new weapon against the US. The execution of poor James Foley wasn't the message: the threat to kill more Americans was.

Underreported in the first news items is that after butchering Foley the executioner showed another captured American journalist Steven Joel Sotloff and threatened to kill him next:
The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision

The official Western policy on blackmail  has always been that negotiations are out of the order. The reality was that Nato countries often paid to get their citizens safe.

What to do in a war like situation? The US is not in any war with IS or Iraq.  The first is not recognized, the second is a befriended nation. Treating it like a terrorist threat? The Islamic State does have an army of sorts and does occupy substantial territory.

We can ignore their existence but we can't get them away by the same kind of wishful thinking. Drone killings are a horror; beheadings are shocking. How to proceed?

How to cope with the eye for an eye policies by IS and the US: how many victims are acceptable?___

Two red bulls and you're out: police shot a man in St. Louis near Ferguson

The victim had stolen two energy drinks from a convenience store and was wielding a knife and acting erratically, said the St. Louis chief of police. According to witnesses he shouted '“shoot me now, kill me now.”

If the police is right he was three to four feet away from them.

Why shoot to kill if you're that close? Police forces all over the world handle lunatics, drunks etc without killing people

About images, preconceptions, being young and yes North Korea
When I was young I spent most of my time sitting in front of the small chest with books in our school. Everything better than paying attention to the teacher and as I did well I was allowed my dreamy time off.

That 'library' was filled with books at least a decade older so most of my new knowledge was already outdated. It didn't affect my joy in reading about the heroes of centuries ago. The stories of explorers, conquerors, kings and emperors filled my brain while helping me escape from the daily class routine.

That 'library' was filled with books at least a decade older so most of my new knowledge was already outdated. It didn't affect my joy in reading about the heroes of centuries ago. The stories of explorers, conquerors, kings and emperors filled my brain while helping me escape from the daily class routine.

One book however was different; it had lots of photos which was rare anyway and they came from all over the world. Now mind that in the early sixties photo books were a luxury and television was not a common good so these pictures really defined my outlook of the contemporary world.

The photos showed me places I hardly understood: New York's sky scrapers (our highest building at that time was 10 floors), Mumbai's busy exotic life, the bare cold tundras of Siberia and endless rain forests. I was fascinated by these photos and they defined my outlook on the world. It took me ages to realize that New York is more than Manhattan, that India had vast deserts and that rain forests were on the way out.

However my most persistent memory is a photo of Africa. Black people (I had never seen one in real life) wearing straw skirts photographed dancing in front of a primitive hut. As with all impressions I absorbed it and filed it as 'life in Africa'

Later on I went to high school, learned more about the world and quietly replaced my first photo images with new knowledge. However, the image of Africa still stood. Yes we learned all kind of demographics and I could have made the jump that the image was incorrect, but it never happened.

It took me two decades to get rid of that specific image representing Africa thanks to one new photo. A picture of Lagos (the largest city in Africa, population 21 million!) showing a coast line full of sky scrapers.

I guess it's hard for readers to understand that only then it dawned on me that I had never made the switch from that fifties photo of an isolated African village to the reality of the continent. Thanks to television we now can daily adjust our prejudices. I'm not sure everyone does, but at least we have the chance.

It's with this long introduction that I invite you to look at this promotional video of Pyongyang, the capital of poor North-Korea. It surprised me to see sky scrapers (seems to be a constant factor in my life ;), a metro, decent clothes and some rare smiles by skating children. True, the only really bright colors seen in this city life came from a DHL delivery van (but I didn't expect to find their services anyway) and a female traffic cop on, yes, high heels.

I don't know about you, but for me it was an eye opener. Yes, it's a poor country and yes people are kept in prisoner camps starving to death, but there's is another side and so far I had completely missed it.

The video doesn't change reality, but it does change my perception of the complexities of the world and maybe it helps others to realize that too often we have a limited outlook on the world.

I would be happy if it just helps one other boy aged seven sitting in a library in understanding the world and saving him two decades of outdated preconceptions.

How can we get (some of) our privacy back? Practical tips wanted!
+Steve Faktor gives some suggestions to help control  our online privacy, but the list could and should be extended.

The nasty reality is that carrying a mobile should be banned and surfing the web should be seen as playing with fire, but most of us don't want to give up all progress to get back to a world with online privacy (and mind you: for most of us online privacy is a larger problem than real life privacy; after thousands of years we got experienced in the latter)/

But what can we do to limit access to our privacy while keeping most of the advantages of the online world? Please contribute in the comments with feasible tips

Want Privacy Online?
There is an average of 30 ad trackers on most websites. Here are my recommendations for vastly improved web privacy:

1 - Make search.disconnect.me your default search engine (anonymized Google search)

2- Use the disconnect.me browser extension

3 - Adblock Plus - make sure to activate Easylist and Easy Privacy lists

4 - Ghostery extension (careful, it occasionally blocks useful stuff that you'll need to unblock or whitelist, like video). This is for semi-advanced users.

5 - Firefox browser on home & mobile

6 - If you use Chrome, uncheck all boxes except "do not track" under "Settings -> Advanced ->Privacy"

7 - I'm experimenting with a new ultra-private browser based on Chrome. No verdict yet. You can check it out at epicbrowser.com

8 - (Optional/Advanced) If you're really worried about spying or often use insecure web connections, consider using a VPN service, which creates a secure "tunnel" for your data. Find reviews on zeropaid.com.

9 - Don't use public WiFi. If you do, do not use it to transmit private info.

10 - Do not enter any private info on sites without a security lock in the address bar (https).

11 - Clean browser cookies, cache and history regularly and use incognito (or private) browsing mode to keep all three from being saved in the first place.

Note: Your IP address (and physical location) is almost always visible to every site and your ISP can see every site you visit, so don't think you can get away with anything sketchy.

PS - If you need help, you can find instructions on how to install/use these tools online. Happy surfing!___How can we get (some of) our privacy back? Practical tips wanted!

This is why G+ is bleeding
Hashtags and mentions in absurd abundance creating new circles of SEO/Marketeers dominating G+

There is nothing wrong with the profession, but please try to be less obnoxious. The mutual mentioning, the abundant sharing, over the top words like  'post of the day', 'gems',  'fantastic thoughts', 'brilliant insights', 21 tips to G+, university course of G+,  all by fellow marketeer x (uninteresting post reiterating stuff we all know), a fantastic show (a boring hangout by three people generating at most five comments), etc.

Please people, there really is nothing wrong with your profession, but why overdo it? People dislike you for a reason and this post, although just an example, is indeed exemplary.

Hotter than in July

What a summer this is turning out to be! I’ve waxed before about the increasing pace and anticipation here on Google+. There’s an ever growing buzz in the community, a realisation that this Google+ thing is happening, the promise being fulfilled. Exciting times to be a part of this unique network. So on with a selection of the delights from the last week.

Back in January +Mia Voss took the decision to rebrand her Social Media Power Chat as +The Mia Connect Power Chat to broaden the discussion topics beyond the confines of social media. Well, this episode Architecture & Interior Design (http://goo.gl/ugqE0u) demonstrates why that was absolutely the right decision to make. Some really interesting conversation from guests Chris Smith (come on Chris get yourself a Google+ account!), +Laurie Laizure, +leslie carothers, +Mitzi Beach, +Susan Serra, +Nazim Beltran and +James Dearsley. Multi-generational housing, developing for the rental market in the UK, planning for the baby boomers as they enter the retirement phase of their lives, changes brought about by the Millennials - it’s all here. As ever Mia has made the show even easier to consume with the comprehensive #timestamp post (http://goo.gl/aZ6GzP)

You may recall the first Paradigm Shift where +Alexandra Riecke-Gonzales promised that framing would be the subject of the second show. Well here it is: Framing: Whose Semantic Frame Are You Living In? (http://goo.gl/wfUILs). Alex and +David Amerland get deep into the topic. Very interesting viewing if you are involved in any kind of marketing or customer relations. Actually it’s very interesting even if you’re not! +John Ellis provides the flawless production. [last minute edit: Alex came back to the comments post event with some fantastic thoughts. Be sure to take a look]

+Yvonne Heimann took the hotspot on +Zara Altair’s Midweek Zap - Connect Tech (http://goo.gl/SCI7C7) giving some solid advice when setting up your self-hosted WordPress site. Topics covered include setting up the connection between your site and your Google+ page or profile, multi-device compatibility, automation with IFTTT, scheduling your content and embedding YouTube videos. I’ve been impressed by the Midweek Zap - take a look and see if you might become a #Zapster.

Glass in the Class is one the shows I really relish - great guests giving just that little bit extra in the more intimate setting. This show Who Cares about Relationship Building? (http://goo.gl/kD98rd) featured one of my favourite plussers +Gina Fiedel (it must be the web developer gravity well that draws us together). +Alexandra Riecke-Gonzales does a marvellous job encouraging some really insightful commentary from Gina about relationships, art and web design. Another hat tip to +John Ellis for the excellent behind the scenes work. Go and watch this 30 minute gem now!

You’ll know I’m a big fan of Google+ Business Spotlight (http://goo.gl/GEfdsg) - the show that showcases real life business use of Google+. This week +Stephan Hovnanian and +Ben Fisher invited +Yifat Cohen to talk about how she uses Google+ right now. Yifat really gets the platform, relationships and business and I never tire of listening to her share her knowledge and experience. A very interesting section on the ROI of engagement and quality followers in the middle section. Yifat really shows why she is everyone’s +G+GoTo Gal. Top job guys.

Giving, giving and more giving

You’ve got to be impressed with the amount of quality content shared freely here. A couple of examples caught my attention this week. First +Daniel Futerman came to the end of his 21 Google Tips series with a look at Google+ itself (http://goo.gl/yh9Q1T). I really appreciate it when people go to these lengths to give something to the wider community. Well done Daniel.

If you’re looking for a quick link to all 21 tips +Denis Labelle has created another of his fantastic list posts for the series here (http://goo.gl/Kep21u). Thanks Denis.

That consummate blogger we all know and love, +Mike Allton, has wrapped up no less than 40 of his most useful Google related articles in this megapost Google+ University (http://goo.gl/yz9pwe). There’s a lot of useful reading in this list, emphasis on lot! You’ll want to bookmark this one, or share it to a private community for later viewing. (That was from post no 11: How to Save Google Plus Posts for Later Reading by the way). Many thanks for the fantastic resource Mike.

What’s in a name?

If you’re wondering about the potential impacts of the relaxation of Google’s real name policy then take a look at +Wayne Brett’s Reactions to Google+ Name Policy Changes (http://goo.gl/8RGw0u). Wayne has drawn together the important posts on the subject from +Yonatan Zunger, +Kristin Drysdale, +David Amerland and +Iblis Bane as well as adding his own thoughts. I don’t really see any major impacts on the way we relate to each other on this platform. The culture of considered and respectful discussion is firmly established here and will no doubt remain strong.

Where is Google going?

+Todd Hartley is putting out an incredibly useful series of discussions Where Google is Going & How to Position Your Business! (http://goo.gl/TUJPJw). I have to confess that I’ve missed the first two but intend to catch up this weekend. In this full thirty minute show +David Amerland shares some thoughts on how business can take advantage of the Google ecosystem to deliver goals. I must congratulate Todd for the format of this show, really tight delivery, in discrete blocks (just ripe for future golden nugget mining!) The ever helpful +Marilyn Moore has made a catch up incredibly easy with this fabulous #timestamp post (http://goo.gl/VxPV5W). And almost #automagically here is episode 4 Getting Ahead with Hangouts on Air (http://goo.gl/FZXmn6) featuring the master of Hangouts +Ronnie Bincer. I’m conscious that this post is getting long so I’ll just say this is well worth watching.

+James Dearsley’s The Midweek Marketing Mix (http://goo.gl/YiZNGf) continues to hit the sweet spot with its mix of expert commentary on the marketing topics of the day. +Joshua Berg, +David Amerland, +kara wood, +Jim Banks and +Daniel Hare. Covering Semantic Search developments and Hangouts with a lot of discussion on identity and voice search, MozCon, Tweet indexing in Google, the latest in SEO including the increasing importance of mobile, and email marketing. There is something of interest for everyone. +The Digital Marketing Bureau has provided the excellent #timestamp summary of the show here (http://goo.gl/V7eEi4)

I always take every opportunity to listen to +Ana Hoffman (coffee = sense in my book!). This week Ana was the guest on +Wade Harman’s Relationship Marketing show sharing Tips To Drive Blog Reader Engagement (http://goo.gl/T5uZCT). As you would expect building strong relationships with others is essential to help validate your content and amplify your reach. Ana gives an overview of the development of her own site and the steps she took to get noticed. Excellent inspiration for blog owners.

A fresh look at paid search

It’s been a while since I’ve done much with paid search so this week’s Digital Marketing Excellence Show surprised me with just how many changes/improvements have taken place. In Paid Search: Mastery of Strategy and Execution (http://goo.gl/nrILbL) +Eric Enge and +Larry Kim deliver some top information at breakneck speed. Segmentation, remarketing, targeting strategies and lots more. I’m going to have to watch again just to let it all sink in. Take a look and see if you need to freshen up your paid search strategy.

And in the red corner…

The gloves were off (almost) in Social Proof - The Ultimate Showdown! (http://goo.gl/DxCcp6). +Stephan Hovnanian took the referee spot as +David Kutcher and +Dustin W. Stout go head to head looking at the pros and cons of social proof. A lively discussion both in the show and the comments looking at the numbers game (is it relevant or just ego massaging?), testimonials, reputation and relationships. The consensus is that social proof is a positive when it’s earned. If you rely on the numbers alone, perhaps artificially inflated, then there are some interesting caveats raised in this show. Well worth a viewing.

Thinkers corner

Ever increasing demands on time are given the #MarkoKoolAid treatment in The Stolen Moments of an Accidental Writer (http://goo.gl/jwi6qV). +Bruce Marko explores his own development as a writer and the time that writing stole from other perhaps more necessary tasks. It’s that eternal conflict that most of face at one time or another when trying to justify our online activities to others, most importantly to family and friends, and ourselves. I relish this type of post, not only for the totally immersive writing, but for the compulsion to take that long hard look at our own situation. Thanks Bruce.

+Teodora Petkova explores content and coins a new term in Creative Marketing (http://goo.gl/PHFR8I). Looking at our inner drive to create Teodora takes us on a journey that encompasses the world's oldest profession in Ancient Greece (yes really) and Charles Jencks’ Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Dumfries. A wonderful piece.

And finally…

It’s the next episode of #AmyTV. I look forward to every new episode. They are perfect examples of how to get your message heard in this Attention Economy. This episode AmyTV#25 Getting Your Business Message Across Loud and Clear (http://goo.gl/4niVlg) is highly entertaining and certainly delivers the message loud and clear. Nice job Amy.

Have a great weekend wherever you are

I know most of the smart people in this field and I'm sure you can do better. Now show it to the G+ community

Really as a profession or at least the non-shady members of it, don't you collectively see that you're ruining the image?

I have btw no doubt that a summary of week events can be useful, but do note the language. As professionals you don't need to sell to each other or do you?

So all these hyperboles are directed at the general G+ audience I assume, but why. All it does it ridicule your profession and estrange you from your own audience. In other words, it's sort of counter marketing. Why?

Does G+ finally understand that we look for interesting people regardless of nationality?
For three years all variants of G+ recommendation engine kept suggesting loads of Dutch people to me. I don't post in Dutch, I don't follow dutchies more than any other nationality, I don't live in the Netherlands and my profile is as international as it could be and yet Google always tried to 'sell' me other Dutch people. Lots of them and basically nothing else unless I scrolled down for half an hour.

It made the whole suggested 'people' utterly worthless, but whatever I did to detach myself from the endless Dutchies I kept getting them until I checked again today. The first few rows are just the way I always hoped them to be: interesting profiles, not connected to anything Dutch in particular.

When we launched Google+ over three years ago, we had a lot of restrictions on what name you could use on your profile. This helped create a community made up of real people, but it also excluded a number of people who wanted to be part of it without using their real names.

Over the years, as Google+ grew and its community became established, we steadily opened up this policy, from allowing +Page owners to use any name of their choosing to letting YouTube users bring their usernames into Google+. Today, we are taking the last step: there are no more restrictions on what name you can use.

We know you've been calling for this change for a while. We know that our names policy has been unclear, and this has led to some unnecessarily difficult experiences for some of our users. For this we apologize, and we hope that today's change is a step toward making Google+ the welcoming and inclusive place that we want it to be. Thank you for expressing your opinions so passionately, and thanks for continuing to make Google+ the thoughtful community that it is.___To err once is human, to uphold the mistake three years is corporate blindness, but to finally accept G+ pseudonyms is progress

There is a balance to be struck here. The process of striking that balance by hand was unnecessarily difficult and confusing. Now that's over.

Lack of stress explains floppy ears, white fur patches and cute faces

Google fights back against their role as a handy NSA extension

We just updated our Transparency Report, showing how many requests Google gets for information about its users. But we're not allowed to give the full story because the U.S. government says that requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) must be kept secret. We can tell you this: Requests have more than doubled around the world since 2009, and more than tripled in the U.S.: http://g.co/u5sp

It would be a win win if Google would exclude everything shared public from your limit.  Together with improved album organizing tools Flickr would have a much harder time competing.

Only a man and a lady can be a couple on the dance floor

If it weren't for real it would be amusing: same sex couples to be banned from ballroom dancing competitions in the UK. Those old and stuck in their way jurors having to give points for lady like dancing.

The British Dance Council is set to consider proposals that would define a dance partnership as having to consist between a man and "a lady" on 21 July, just before a major competition in Bournemouth. If it is passed, it will ban same-sex couples from mainstream contests, regulating them to same-sex-only categories.

Good question: what should Wimbledon do with same sex tennis partners?

Google's Cynical Manipulation of the Right To Be Forgotten
By removing articles from the British press they manipulate the debate. In what looks like an one two with the Guardian, BBC and other influential UK papers they pave the way for an outcry over censorship.

The court order said search engines will have to remove links to inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or excessive information which harms private individuals unnecessarily.

These are of course not the kind of links which the EU regulation addresses nor does these fit the Court judgement.

To be clear, the Guardian covering the white lie by a referee is badly written but that's not a reason to remove it ;) It certainly doesn't qualify under any of the set criteria as it is about a very public conflict in football, an individual acting in a public role, quite recent and not excessive at all. It totally doesn't fit the bill for removal.

The BBC blog is an even worse example as the only person mentioned is the chairman of Merrill Lynch, who is definitely not an European. Even if he was, this was a about a large company, public traded, criticism of his role as chairman etc.

Google removes these ridiculous cases ahead of the normal requests, then informs the British Press they removed their page (not true), which then cries 'censorship' all over their front pages.

(technically not true as you can still find the articles from within Europe if you search on the subject matter instead of the individuals name, so what is removed is the 'celebrity factor' of a search on name. For the cases intended under this ruling that celebrity factor wouldn't exist).

The right to be forgotten is very worthy and we Europeans should be proud of it, but Google is making a mockery of its responsibility to implement the ruling.

With these cases in the spotlight no proper public debate about the protection and the limitations of this right to be forgotten is possible. Abuse of power by Google and likely to lead to a conflict with the EU privacy organizations

next post I will address why it's actually a good ruling, a right worthy to have and not the end of civilization as we know it, but I had to get this off my chest first

To everyone reacting here: please comment as well on my question in
What should fall under the European right to be forgotten and to reverse it: what should fall under the 'right to know'? as I really want to know what you guys think should be holy on the internet and what personal information could possibly be removed.

Name of the novel about a boy returning to his island after a storm?
He goes to a very small island as part of an initiation rite and when he returns everyone is dead due to a sort of Tsunami. His home island is if I recall correctly 'the father island' with drunken parrots from specially made beer.

Google didn't want to spit up that title so I'm asking you readers.

edit: and then you suddenly remember: Terry Pratchett – Nation and it was the Boy's Island from which Mau canoed back. If they do a reprint them let use this image for a cover!

React on +Yonatan Zunger's thread or here, whatever you prefer. ___

The memory limitations were 'addressed' by a variety of clumsy and super smart solutions, still leaving the user with the need toconf... more »

The 8088 was very difficult to program, slow at 4.77 MHz, couldn't properly address memory and had some major flaws. However the IBM XT was hugely popular so it became the benchmark to write code against.  The memory limitations were 'addressed' by a variety of clumsy and super smart solutions, still leaving the user with the need to configure his himem.sys and what else we got.

The limitations were overcome by some 'clones' like the NEC, the 80186 by Intel, but mostly by very smart programmers who developed memory management, paging schemes and what else laying the foundations for modern operating systems.

Most of all however it was a fun processor for programmers. Yes, it couldn't do what a 68000 easily achieved, making it the laughing stock of Apple, Atari and Amiga programmers, BUT it had a working business model. People actually bought software for it.

In case you come from another era: bit like the iPad 1 :)

Getting the damned thing to perform was a huge challenge and I'm pretty sure that a new generation of programmers / hardware hackers got created not because the 8088 was anything good, but because there was a challenge: how to get that crippled thing to sing and dance.

Don't forget it came - in the IBM PC package - with a GPU which if possible was even more behind times compared to the home computers of these days like the BBC, Armstrad, Amiga, Atari etc. Most were better performers and certainly easier to program.

I had the smart insight bad luck to buy a clone PC, meaning it was compatible on MS-DOS level, not on machine instructions, nor on a closer spec called PC--DOS.

Now this should have been easy as who would bypass MS-DOS? Why would you? And indeed mine worked fine, except that it actually had better hardware than the original and suddenly the flaw became clear. Nobody would ever take advantage of it.

Mine could do full pixel addressing on high res, nothing like the CGA of the orginal, but I couldn't use it. My amber monitor would only show the WordStar formatting codes while I was sure it could do a better job.

Ah well, I was busy writing a thesis (on a very different subject than computers), but why not try to write an editor. Wysiswig they were called when invented: word processors which could show formatting on screen. Nobody could, but there was a rumor Microsoft would start doing it.

I realized that if they would release it, it wouldn't support my specific, slightly different, hardware so I decided to write one myself. Took me six months, but by then I had a lightning fast completely graphical text editor which did italics and more stuff I can't show here because G+ is still behind my home brew program.

When Microsoft Word finally was released my thesis was already finished and so was my wife's one. The only two users the system ever had. But I did test and my software was way faster on page refreshes than Word 1.0 so reason to celebrate.

Apparently I could do more than writing theses for my university. I'm still happy, both for the limitations of the 8088 which made you puzzle and think twice if not more before committing code to it as well as the luck  (with hindsight) of having a not completely compatible machine forcing me to write most code myself.

(In case you want to know: all events triggered a career change where for a few years I was a dedicated graphic programmer specializing in 3D, but that's for another story).

What memories do you have of that humble 8088 CPU
