One of the most unique places I have ever seen in my life is Plitvice Lakes National Park in beautiful Croatia.

The waterfalls are innumerable and seem to come from absolutely nowhere. It's not just the sights of the falls but the soothing sounds of the water streaming and cascading that makes Plitvice so amazing. This place is truly a natural wonder of the world.

Thanks to Plura Travel for making the trip so memorable. I'm looking forward to my next trip to Croatia now :-)

Happy Canada Day!

So excited to be heading back to one of the most beautiful places in Canada... Make that the world!

Banff National Park, here I come :-)

When I travel the world and meet people from other countries, this is usually the vision they have about Canada. Rugged mountains, crystal clear lakes, pristine forests, and unrivalled natural beauty as far as the eye can see.

You know, I like their vision of my country. I like it a whole lot :-)

To all my fellow Canadians, take a moment to reflect on just how lucky you are to live in such a beautiful country.

Wishing you all a wonderful and happy Canada Day.

Photographer Jason Sheldon takes issue with Taylor Swift's rather hypocritic stance in her open letter to Apple regarding the new Apple Music service's policy not to pay artists during the free three month trial that is being offered.

Seems to me that her letter was more of a publicity stunt conceived by Swift and Apple rather than a complaint. After all, who writes a letter of concern and condemnation and uses terms like "astronomically successful Apple" or "I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done" or "innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field" or "we admire and respect Apple so much"... Sounds more like an advert for Apple than an open letter condemning their policy of not paying artists.

Sounds more like an advert for Apple than an open letter condemning their policy of not paying artists.

If it was a publicity stunt, then bravo! Well done. That's creative marketing strategy. Regardless of whether it was or not, Swift's policies for photographers shooting her shows is now in the spotlight and she needs to address the fact that she is doing the same thing that she is condemning. Even worse, in the contract that she makes photographers sign before photographing her concerts, it states that the photographer can only license images a single time in one named publication, never use them again, and she would be allowed to use them for non commercial (i.e.: publicity) use for all eternity, without having to compensate the photographer. The contract also threatens the destruction of photographers equipment (including but not limited to cell phones, memory cards, etc) if they breach the agreement.

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.___

What a great way to end my trip to Myanmar and Thailand...

New blog post: http://bit.ly/Well-Travelled

Spending a quiet evening in Bangkok photographing temples was quite the contrast to the evening before. On the previous night, I spent my birthday out on to town and somehow ended up in a tiny Japanese pub with a live Rastafarian Reggae band playing. And then the police raided the joint. But that's a story for another time ;-)

What's a #LifeWellTravelled if you don't have a little excitement once in a while?

Myanmar was one of the most interesting places I've ever visited. Every aspect of life there is quite different than what we live here in the west and it was so much fun to meet so many kind people and see so much rich history.

Watching the sunset from the top of one of the thousands of stupas and pagodas in Bagan was just one of the special moments I experienced on my +Viking River Cruises Myanmar journey. Getting a chance to discover the country via river cruise ship was something new for me and relaxing in such luxury while exploring Myanmar was definitely a highlight of the year for me.

Thanks also to +Cathay Pacific Airways 國泰航空  for getting me there in style. Getting a bump to business class allowed me to arrive well rested and ready to seize the day :)

Some sunsets are nice, some incredible, and some are impossible to describe even with a photograph.

This sunset in Dubrovnik in Croatia started off slowly but turned into one of the most dazzling displays of colour that I have seen in years. The colors are so bright and vivid that it makes it hard to show what it really looked like in a photo. It’s almost too much colour and looks unreal but I promise you that this is how the sky really looked.

Five minutes after taking this photograph from the fortified walls that surround the old city of Dubrovnik, security guards came to get us to leave as access to the walls ends just around sunset. Not a happy coincidence for a photographer.

My heartfelt thanks go to Daniel at Plura Travel for making my trip to Croatia as awesome as it was. If you're looking for an amazing Croatia travel experience contact Daniel for all the helpy... more »

Made some new friends today at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. Just the beginning of my adventure with Viking River Cruises as we explore Burma for the next 11 days.

What a beautiful and kind people the Burmese are. I'm truly taken with their sincere smiles and friendly disposition. They are genuinely happy to see us and take the time to talk with us and share a laugh and a smile.

Looking forward to what tomorrow brings!

Microsoft has now published part two of the story they wrote about me on their blog.

This time they focused on the story behind the photo and how the images I shoot have deeper meaning for me. They touch on the importance of image editing, the experiences that surround the photographs, how the people that join me on my photo tours inspire me, and how I try to make the images that I create an homage to the places that I travel to.

It is quite an honour to have one article about be on the Microsoft blog and I'm thrilled that they saw fit to publish a second story. I had a lot of fun talking with them and they did an awesome job conveying what I said and meant in a very eloquent way.

Hope you enjoy the article... Have a great start to the week :-)

No matter how much I travel, I always have a wish list of places to visit that make my imagination run wild. Myanmar is certainly one of the top 3 places in the world that I want to see and experience right now and I feel like the universe was listening now that it is happening!

For so long this country is been closed off to the west and while I wish I could have gone several years ago before any western influence had touched Myanmar, I'm thrilled that I'm getting the chance to visit in April.

Have you been to Burma/Myanmar?
What was your favourite part?

It was sincere pleasure to have a frank discussion about the state of photography as business today, the necessity of good branding, taking chances, and one of my favourite topics... Photography tours :-)

It was only a matter time. Google+ has been disintegrating as a total unit but some of the features sure are worth salvaging and re-purposing. Good move by Google if they do this.

Is anyone really surprised that +Peter Lik is a fraud?

I'll give him this much, his marketing people are top notch but he's he's never sold a photo for more than 16k at auction. $6 million dollar sale... my ass!

Glad to see him exposed for the joke he is.

Could it be?

Canon shooters have long waited for some news like this and I know a lot of Canon shooters that have switched to the competition in the last year because it seemed that Canon just decided to stop innovating.

If this is true and Canon does come out with a 50MP camera, will you buy one?

Attention Travel and Photo Bloggers!

I'm teaming up with +Thomas Cook UK  as a judge in their new Explore the Elements blogger photo contest.

http://bit.ly/ETEKen

You can win cameras, computers, iPhones and the grand prize in this contest is a whopping £5000 travel fund! yep that's British pounds sterling so that means around $9,074 CAD, $7,581 USD, €6,553, or ¥891,694. Heck, that would make you almost a millionaire in Japanese yen ;-)

The categories for the photo contest are the Four Elements: Water, Air, Earth, and Fire. I'll be judging the water category.

One of the criteria of the contest is that you have to be a blogger since that's where you will be showcasing your images that you're entering in the competition. The other is that you have to nominate five other bloggers to participate in the contest.

As the year drew to an end my friends at +B and H asked 14 photographers to share a year end story that was inspirational, reflective, forward looking, or all three.

I therefore tried to reflect on the past, look forward to the future, and try to keep myself inspired to do the things I love. A lot of good things came into my life when I started to take chances and believe in myself. It's a lesson I keep re-learning.

There are a lot of good and inspiring articles in this series and you can find them all here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/p/inspiration-for-the-new-year

The Photographer's bucket list of travel destinations and locations to photograph.

http://bit.ly/Photo-Bucket-List

What are your photography bucket list locations to photograph? I've been compiling my list for the last few days and while the list quite long, I'm sure that I'm missing a few places. I'd love to hear your top picks or even better, more one-of-a-kind and lesser known places that would be ideal for a photographer's bucket list.

I'm excited about this fun art project that I'm working on that helps celebrate unique and beautiful places around the world. The idea is simple, each month in 2015 a selected expert in one particular field will create a bucket list of locations that will be interpreted by a talented artist in the form of a map printed using Heidelberg SBB Letterpress printed on Crane's Lettra, 100% cotton paper.more »

These will be limited edition prints numbered from 1-100.

How am I involved? I get to be the April expert and create my list of photographer's bucket list places! Wooohooo! Mixing travel, photography, and art together just sounds like the perfect mix and I can't wait to see the creative result.

We will be working on the my map in the next month but could use a little help with the project. There is a Kickstarter campaign going on right now and we are almost at our goal with just a few days left. Check out the link above for a full description of the project (there's even a fun video) and I'm sure that you'll be as impressed as I was when I first read about the map project.

He was also one of the people that I have known for years online and just assumed that I would meet one day. I only wish that I had Wes' gift with words so that I could pay a proper tribute to him.

Today I started the day on a very bad note only to have it all turn around. Now I'll always remember this day as a moment in my life that made me smile so hard that I feel I'm going to burst.

Once I return home next week, I'll be writing a blog post about what happened but until then I just wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to the US National Park Service Rangers at Joshua Tree National Park here in beautiful California. They went well beyond the call of duty to help me out and I'll forever be grateful. Jeannie, you ROCK!

This project has been in the works for over a year and the timing could not be more ideal since Formatt-Hitech has finally released their groundbreaking new line of Firecrest neutral density and polarizing filters.

If you're curious about what exactly is in the filter kit and the cool kind of photography that you can do with it, please check out the in depth blog post. In the article I share some of my favourite photos using neutral density and polarizing filters, and discuss how photographers can get creative with the filters in my kit.

http://bit.ly/Ken-Kit

This project has been in the works for over a year and the timing could not be more ideal since Formatt-Hitech has finally released their groundbreaking new line of Firecrest neutral density and polarizing filters.

If you're curious about what exactly is in the filter kit and the cool kind of photography that you can do with it, please check out the in depth blog post. In the article I share some of my favourite photos using neutral density and polarizing filters, and discuss how photographers can get creative with the filters in my kit.

A huge tip of the hat and my sincere appreciation goes out to +Rod Clark ,  James Stamp , David Stamp, and Katie Barrish from +Formatt-Hitech  . Without their dedication to this project and passion for the art of photography, people like me would not have nearly as much fun being a photographer... Thanks!___

I’m off to Turin, Italy today to attend +Steve McCurry 's new Lavazza calendar launch. For 20 years now, Lavzza has been working with top photographers to create some very memorable calendars. Steve’s incredible body of work for National Geographic (including the most famous one ever) and other publications has made him a photography icon and it will be fun to meet him for the second time after a brief encounter in Umbria in 2012.

Some of my favourite shooters like Mark Seliger, Albert Watson, and Ellen von Unwerth have been featured in past Lavazza calendars and you can check out all the previous editions here: http://www.lavazza.com/en/coffee-passion/photography/calendars/

Steve’s 2015 calendar explores 12 stories of African individuals as they share their dreams, their produce and land, as witnesses of hope for change. By working with the Slow Food organization and Lavazza, Steve and other people involved with this project are making a difference by making positive change across the African continent.

I’ll be going to some cool events in Turing including the Salone del Gusto slow food fair where I’ll get a chance to have a coffee with Steve and talk about the theme of his calendar and photography in general.

If you have any questions you’d like me to ask Steve, leave them here in the comments and I’ll pick a few to share with him. Answers and story about the Lavazza/Slow Food project in an upcoming blog post.___
