Fear, Post-Traumatic Stress and Growth

✿   Fear is a part of life whether it is fear of war and terrorism, or the general fears, like those of intimacy, abuse, inadequacy, a physical disease, surviving a natural disaster, or living with chronic pain.

✿   Research explains that most people who are exposed to a terrifying event do not have lasting problems. However, many people may have mild anxiety reactions, and 20% or more may develop serious emotional distress.

✿   People should consider receiving professional help if the emotional distress does not diminish over time, or if stress levels interfere with the ability to perform. http://goo.gl/UzO4X

Fitness A Historical Journey In Time
by +Dr. Cheryl Ann MacDonald, Psy'D.

➤   One of man’s greatest achievements since the beginning of existence is the ongoing quest for good health.

➤   Throughout primitive times, man’s hunt for physical strength has been guided by a passion for surviving. The concept of fitness remains paramount to health and well-being though for most it is no longer driven by the need to outrun predators or prevent hunger.

How long does it take to become a Licensed Clinical Psychologist?

✿    This is one of the questions I get asked frequently from students, patients and friends. And of course the answer is somewhat nuanced.

1.  If someone wants to practice independently and open up their own practice, company, etc.

Four years undergrad
Five years Masters & Doctorate Degree (2000 hrs in internships)
Post- Doctorate hours 2000 to qualify for 2 board Exams
1-2 years Exam Process

2.  If someone wants to go into Academics/Research the Post-Doctorate hours and Exam Process is not necessary (but will increase your chances of getting hired)

So best scenario 10-12 years

✿  Now for me, add on 3 yrs. of Nursing School & a license and that's what qualified me as being a Health Psychologist. (A few clinical psych programsnow have... more »

☀   I live in a neighbor that is filled with kids & this holiday is fun for all....at my place....young & old. I remember absolutely loving to get money.

☀   I expect about 50-75 trick or treaters knocking at my doorstep as this huge black lab of mine, jumps, screams, hollars and barks at the prospect of knocking em all down to play.

☀   This year I am doing a little fun social experiment (although applies only to my neighborhood...so it doesn't generalize to all)

How health psychology relates to fear and discipline

There are many unhappy adults in this world, but the most unhappy ones are those that were frightened by a situation or an adult in their life when they were children.

I am including all significant adult figures, parents, siblings, teachers, preachers and any significant figure that is associated with creating a traumatic event. The Connection between Fear and Discipline.  http://goo.gl/uqQme

“Sorry, I’m late.”

✿ For some, being late is stressful, but, it beats the alternative.✿

Here some of the reasons explained by Adoree Durayappah-Harrison

➨  It’s inefficient
➨  They hate the uneasiness of being early
➨  There is an opportunity cost associated with getting somewhere early.
➨  Sometimes you do not want to be early to be polite.

While many individuals see being early as a virtue, many others don’t. Earliness isn’t valued to them because it is a waste of time.

Note this tactic is used by activists and extremists and is NOT just utilized by the "food movement".  What are some other examples???

The Emotional Effects of Terror
by +Dr. Cheryl Ann MacDonald, Psy'D.

There is no right or wrong way to respond to terrifying events, and how one reacts varies from person to person. Understandably some respond with feeling helpless and not wanting to believe.

Over time, these feelings may escalate to extreme anxiety, fear and despair. Some may relive the event in the form of a flashback, have difficulty concentrating, experience extreme fear, and notice an increase in health problems.  For more information http://goo.gl/UzO4X
