STEM Women on G+150,908Join us for a STEM Women HOA panel discussion as we speak to Professor @114601143134471609087, Dr @111479647230213565874 and Dr @115510485336217794615 about the impact of everyday sexism in academia.  We will discuss the sometimes subtle role that gender plays in academia, and discuss situations that might not be obviously sexist, but can in fact be damaging to female academics. This HOA will be hosted by Dr @108510686109338749229 and Dr @110756968351492254645  and you can tune in on Sunday March 30th at 1 PM Pacific/ 9 PM BST (UK). Being Different

I think most psychologists (clinical, academic & researchers) are basically quiet, somewhat reserved, introvert types. Working in their offices, rooms or labs, like "traditional" scientists.  This behavior doesn't promote communication, understanding or awareness & is a disservice to society.

Although I'm basically an introvert, somewhat quiet, I've always had that "New England" spunk and at times just "tell like it is"   (err, what I think it is).  So, I decided to be different and have smashed myself all over the internet. if you're the timid type be careful with twitter folks. Whoosh, the backs and forths can bring out the New York in me. (learning). I don't get facebook, yet, but OK for looking at pictures of relatives (some I don't even know) Linken...ah OK for sharing articles, pinterest...funfo... more »

Google Plus  has quality posts from incredibility intelligent people and fun posts, is my favorite.....and the only site that I share little bits of me.....   I wish more people (psychologists, scientists, academics, engineers and all the introverts) would share their stuff (remember like in kindergarten on share day)     Thanks Google Plus

Freedom is man's capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.        Rollo May

History Lesson

➨  Rollo May was a 20th-century psychologist who played central roles both in developing and promoting existential psychology. He helped introduce existential psychology  shaped by other philosophical approaches, such as humanism.

➨  His fundamental goal was to figure out the essential components of human suffering and human crises.  May achieved this by combining elements of humanism with existentialism in his approach to therapy.

Mindfulness

Is an outlook of having alert, unblocked absorption in the present. People are mindful, when they recognize their thoughts and feelings at a distance, clear of analyzing them to be right or wrong. Mindfulness is living in the moment and paying attention to the experience, instead of letting life pass by.  For more information http://goo.gl/d3zdTe

How to reach your goals

Goals are based on what is valuable to people at certain points in life, and they vary according to personal priorities, relationships and professional challenges.

Expectations of ourselves are meant to be energizing, motivating and serve like a guiding light towards living a purposeful life.

Here's a simple guide. http://goo.gl/4vWIe

Irrational & Illogical Thinking Mechanisms

➨   Should Statements can be harmful and demotivating. People can replace them with thoughts of "It would be good to exercise 3 times a week". At times, should statements exhibit the fallacy of the false dilemma which is either-or type of reasoning. Sometimes, should statements reflect the fallacy of unacceptable premise or belief, and occurs when they accept an association that is unjustified by the evidence. One example is a depressed person thinking "Anyone, who feels angry with their friend, is a bad friend and should feel very guilty.

➨   Emotional Reasoning is when someone believes that a negative feeling about something reflects reality, when false.  For example, a person who feels as if they have nothing to offer the world, when not true.  Feelings are important and very compelling at times reflecting reality. When feelings fail to reflect reality, some believe what they sense anyway and believe a conclusion even though the evidence is lacking.
➨   All or Nothing thinking involves a tendency to see in just black and white. For example, "Either I'm a total success, or I'm a total failure."  This type of thinking is a logical fallacy, because they are assuming that only two options exist when there are multiple.
➨   Disqualifying the Positive This fallacy occurs when people overlook or ignore relevant evidence supporting a different conclusion. A depressed person may think no one likes them, and they discuss this with their friend, who says "I like you, and so does your family".  This is evidence that the belief is false, but the depressed person persists in this thinking.  This kind of thinking is an example of the fallacy of suppressed evidence.

Happy Thanksgiving and Finding Gratitude

►    For some during this season of “thanks,”  it is tough to recognize an appreciation when the world and possibly you or loved ones are struggling through times of crisis and stress. But just how can people find thanks and gratitude when a dark cloud is looming?

1.   Fake it
2.   Help others
3.   Look to the world
4.   Acknowledge the stress

Pride and Arrogance

There two types of pride.

Authentic Pride is when people feel positive about themselves, self-assured, and productive These characteristics relate to desirable personality styles such as being agreeable, conscientious, and emotionally strong.

Hubristic Pride suggests egotism and arrogance. These characteristics relate to socially undesirable traits such as being disagreeable, aggressive and having a brittle or somewhat low self-esteem.

Bipolar Disorder and Life

The Causes of Bipolar Illness

1. Genetic Pre-Disposition
2. Physiological Conditions
3. Environmental Conditions
4. Medication

Those with un-diagnosed bipolar disorder tend to self-medicate using alcohol or drugs in efforts to relieve their depressed or manic moods. However, such band-aides rarely provide the kind of long-term aid most people desire and mood stabilizers are always a part of the approved treatment plan.

Trust

Our ability to trust is the basis of all human relations, from random interactions to friendships to loving relationships. Having the ability to trust effects our communications and early childhood attachments contribute to how we view the world and the people in it.

+Melanie Greenberg states that one of the most important decisions people make in life is deciding who to trust. So how do we avoid the con men? Understanding the brain's automatic wiring may hold the key. This article discusses three main points.

How Can People Make Make Better Choices About Whom to Trust

(Indeed a fight/fright situation) I absolutely adore all animals and couldn't make it through the animal testing done when I was in school to become a researcher. Therefore, I switched tracks & became a clinical psychologist. Going to Africa fulfilled a childhood dream.

New Research on Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia not a single disease but multiple genetically distinct disorders by Jim Dryden http://goo.gl/R9RNHF

✺    A new research study in 2014 by the Washington University School of Medicine has singled out distinct gene arrangements that provide eight different types of schizophrenia. These scientists have found the method of how genes collaborate with each other pointing to different classifications of schizophrenia.

➨    Cloninger and his colleagues paired specific DNA variations in those with and without schizophrenia to symptoms of schizophrenic clients. In patients with hallucinations or delusions the researchers matched distinct genetic characteristics to symptoms and demonstrated that these interactions produced a 95 percent risk of schizophrenia. In another group of patients, the researchers discovered that disorganized speech and behavior specifically associated with a set of DNA variations that displayed a 100 percent risk of schizophrenia. Dr. Svrakic Ph'D., a member of the team, stated that it was when they organized the symptoms and genetic variations into categories they identified clusters of DNA variations that worked together and produced different types of symptoms.

➨   Sometimes genes are acting in concert with each other to disturb the brain's function and structure, resulting in the expression of an illness. Individual genes have a very inadequate and inconsistent relationship in defining schizophrenia, but, groups of collaborating gene sets produce a remarkably high and consistent prediction for the disease. By organizing clusters of genetic variations and coordinating them with symptoms, it may be feasible to target drugs to a particular pathway that produces distress.

➨ These results indicate that the illness is not a single disease, but a collection of eight genetically different disorders, each having separate types of symptoms. This finding could lead towards improved diagnosis and treatment for the debilitating mental illness.

Placebo vs. Nocebo

Placebo Effect  is the experience that people feel better even though they received a treatment or medication that has not been scientifically proven. The placebo effect is a positive reaction.

Nocebo  Effect is a harmless treatment that is usually scientifically proven, however, creates side effects in someone who receives the treatment.  (Usually a medication). The nocebo effect is a negative reaction.

Both effects originate from and are caused by a state of mind, thus having a psychological rather than a physiological cause. This means that the effects are psychogenic in nature

"I think perfect objectivity is an unrealistic goal, fairness, however, is not ---- Michael Pollan

For a week-end read

How people view fairness

For centuries, all leading philosophers and social thinkers have pursued  the concept of fairness that has never gone out of fashion.

In recent years, science joins the engagement; the conquest for fairness has greatly expanded, enveloping disciplines conventionally considered marginal for the topic, including, psychology, sociology, biology, neuroscience, anthropology, and economics.

Three distinct concepts of fairness

〓  Fairness as social justice. People have accountability to one another, and the more one has, the more society demands from that person to sacrifice for the common good. Responsibility and compassion plays a role in the calculation.

〓  Fairness as being a personal freedom. People get what they deserve. If someone works vigorously, he or she will have success and receiving nothing if it is not earned.

〓 Fairness as being an equal opportunity of outcome. Everything is equal, for example, everyone pays the same price for an entrance to the museum. No one has more than another.

Dr. Sarah Brosnan of Georgia State Neuroscience Institute for the last decade studied behavioral responses to equal versus unequal reward primates.

This research explains how brown capuchin monkeys became angry and agitated refusing to perform a task when another received a perceived superior reward for that same task. Her thoughts are that Human sense of fairness evolved to favor long-term cooperation For the entire study http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/09/140918141151.htm

The Biology of Emotions
by +Cheryl Ann MacDonald

✹   Psychological treatment methods of emotion research continue to be ongoing and various points are emerging which manage to promote the views that psychologists have long supported. The current research offers the biological explanations for the health psychology position, human emotions are biological, psychological and sociological in nature.

✹  Without the importance of recognizing feelings and incoming information, the world would be a colorless, dull, and unmemorable place. The significant theories of emotions can be classified into three central fields: neurological, physiological, and cognitive.

✹  Emotions just exist, people cannot change them easily, they are acquired differently than the way people master practical skills and neglecting them can create difficulties in life.  People can discover how and when to use logical thought to disregard feeling states or at least postpone expression until a situation is rationally evaluated.

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I am getting back into the swing of things on the business site and will try to post an in depth subject once a week.  Take care!

Motivation and Meeting Your Goals

Motivation is the energy that ignites, leads and perpetuates goal-oriented actions. Motivation causes people to take steps. The psychological determinants that lie beneath someone becoming motivated can be cognitive, social, emotional or biological.

Researchers have developed a number of different theories to explain motivation. However, they all tend to be restricted in scope. By looking at the key thoughts behind each theory, we can gain a better understanding of the concept.  These theories include

           1.     Instinct Theory
           2.     Arousal Theory
           3.     Humanistic Theory
           4.     Psychoanalytic Theory
           5.     Drive Reduction Theory

How to Meet your Goals and Expectations

SMART is an acronym for a process which can be easily adapted to anyone’s personal life. Over the years, the letters have undergone several transformations. However, the concept remains as relevant today as when it was first coined.

To fulfill an expectation requires people to transform the virtual dream into a real world reality. To “SMARTen” expectations assists in making decisions and keeps up the motivation, therefore, people are more likely to have those win-win scenarios. One common Psychological Defense Mechanism

►    Rationalization is a defense mechanism that explains undesirable behaviors, beliefs or feelings in a logical, systematic manner, thus, avoiding the true reasons. Rationalization prevents anxiety and protects self-esteem.

►   Another, less comical example is that when people come face to face with success or failure, they tend to note an achievement to their qualities and skills while a failure attributes to other people or outside forces. Whether true or false, and we all use this defense at times throughout our lives, it’s all a matter of degree.
